Send us a textThe arbitrary deadline of turning 40 has long been accompanied by the ominous warning that "a fool at 40 is a fool forever." But is this cultural expectation rooted in truth or merely a societal construct that creates unnecessary pressure?Drawing from personal experience and historical examples, I challenge this limiting belief by highlighting remarkable success stories that defy age-based expectations. Harlan Sanders founded KFC at 65, Gordon Bowick launched Starbucks at 51, and Ray Kroc transformed McDonald's into a global empire at 52. Vera Wang and Joyce Meyer both began their impactful careers at 40. These examples aren't exceptions—they're powerful reminders that your timeline isn't dictated by cultural norms. When I turned 40 in 2017, I faced what felt like attacks on all fronts—corporate challenges, spiritual warfare, and financial pressure. This period of darkness nearly broke me but ultimately became the catalyst for writing my first book and creating this podcast. What appeared to be a season of failure was actually preparation for purpose. Through this experience, I discovered what I now share with you: "The wisdom of patience will teach you speed." Every trial builds competence, character, and capacity for your ultimate calling.Modern achievements like Forbes' "40 Under 40" lists amplify the pressure to perform by certain ages, yet these arbitrary metrics ignore divine timing and individual purpose. Instead of measuring yourself against cultural expectations or corporate achievements, discover your God-given purpose and pursue it without the anxiety of comparison. You weren't created to fit someone else's standard but to fulfill a unique calling that transforms lives in ways only you can.Have you been feeling the pressure of age-based expectations? Share your journey with us and remember—your story isn't finished, and your greatest contributions may still lie ahead, regardless of your age.Support the showYou can support this show via the link below;https://www.buzzsprout.com/1718587/supporters/new

On Friday, actress and model Hunter Schafer posted an eight-and-a-half minute video on TikTok in which she revealed that the replacement passport she had just received had the gender marker changed from female to male.Ms. Schafer is a trans woman, widely beloved among Gen-Z for her acting—particularly her performance in “Euphoria”—and broadly considered one of the most beautiful women in the world. Over the years, she's modeled for Prada, Vera Wang, Marc Jacobs, Alexander McQueen, and many other houses. She came out as a teen girl and has renewed previously with the correct gender marker, with no issues. That means the State Department is either intentionally flagging all American passports with record of a gender marker change and/or they're intentionally cross-referencing passports with birth certificates, some of which are issued by states that ban gender marker changes. Not to mention: the ridiculous complexity for intersex Americans.Florida, Kansas, Montana, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas all prohibit gender marker amendments on birth certificates. Their number will very likely grow by the end of this year. Last week, the Arizona House approved a bill banning residents from amending their birth certificates to reflect their authentic gender identity.I'm worried for all the obvious reasons: the government tracking, the likely surveillance of trans people, the grave risk of an incorrect, “outed” passport for any trans person who needs to travel internationally, the potential for confusion and obstruction over government documents for things like security clearances, etc. That same day, the Bureau of Prisons announced that trans people incarcerated in federal prisons would be moved to facilities that align with their sex assigned at birth, as early as next week. There are nearly 2,300 trans people incarcerated in federal prisons at the moment.Trans women transferred to men's prisons will obviously be at substantially greater risk of violence. The same day—yes, all on Friday—Iowa Republicans announced a bill that, if successful, would remove ‘gender identity' as a protected class in the Iowa Civil Rights Act, thus eliminating anti-discrimination protections for all transgender Iowans. It would make Iowa the first state to remove a protected class from civil rights law.Meanwhile, at the White House—yes, same exact day—Trump was speaking to a large, bipartisan group of governors and went after Maine Gov. Janet Mills from behind his podium.“Is Maine Here? The governor of Maine?”“Yeah, I'm here,” she said from her seat in the audience.“Are you not going to comply with that?” Trump demanded of her, referencing the executive order he signed on Feb. 5th that bans trans girls and young women from competing on girls' and women's sports teams.“I'm complying with the state and federal laws,” she responded.“We are the federal law,” snapped Trump. “You better do it… You better comply , you better comply, because otherwise you're not getting any federal funding.”“See you in court,” she retorted from her seat.“Good,” said Trump. “I'll see you in court. I look forward to that. That should be a real easy one, and enjoy your life after governor, because I don't think you'll be in elected politics.”It was yet another moment Trump attempted to intimidate elected officials across the political spectrum over trans issues. On Saturday, Trump spoke to the 2025 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), where he took a victory lap for ending “transgender insanity.”“It's all out now — critical race theory and transgender insanity. It's all gone from our schools and from our military and I believe it's gone, too… I believe that it's all gone.”Today, Bill Maher appeared on the “Pod Saves America” podcast and argued with co-host Jon Lovett about trans issues, urging him that Democrats would “lose every election” if they don't give up more on trans equality.Side note here: anti-trans punditry that claims to be offering the “reasonable middle” argument always seems to intensely focus on what they don't want. There is never a good faith framing of what they believe should be legal. There are reasons for that: either they don't actually believe in minimum rights for trans people or they fear being targeted by extremists for offering support for even a modicum of trans equality. The relentless pace of anti-trans actions and rhetoric have become overwhelming. That's how I'm doing.Charlotte's Web Thoughts is a reader-supported publication. Longtime beauty executive Lori Singer has been instrumental in some of the biggest fragrance license deals of the past 20 years. Singer spent more than a decade at Coty, where she worked on bestselling fragrances by Calvin Klein, Vera Wang, Balenciaga and Nautica. She also tripled global net revenues for Marc Jacobs with its iconic Daisy franchise launched in 2007. Singer got her start at Revlon, and her CV also includes Calvin Klein Cosmetics, Unilever and Benetton Group.  “I've spent my entire career in beauty. I'm sort of a beauty lifer,” she told Glossy. “I fell in love on day one at Revlon, my first job, and I really have never looked back.”  Singer joined Parlux in 2019 to grow its license business and immediately set her sights on Billie Eilish.  “Other than music, fragrance and scent are everything to her. So, upon meeting her and hearing about her deep knowledge [of fragrance, we knew it was a fit for Parlux],” Singer told Glossy. “She knows ingredients and she knows about olfactory territory. She has had a natural nose for scents." By 2021, her first scent, Eilish, was released, which she followed up with Eilish No. 2 the next year and Eilish No. 3 in 2023.  Fast forward to last week, and Parlux released Eilish's fourth fragrance, called Your Turn. The new scent is priced at $90 for 100 milliliters and available DTC — it will launch in Ulta Beauty doors later this spring. Your Turn is gender-neutral and described as “warm, woody and fresh” with notes of peach, ginger and sandalwood.  Frank Voelkl, principal perfumer at fragrance house Firmenich, was the “nose.” One of the most famous perfumers working today, he has created Glossier's You franchise, Phlur's Mood Ring and Father Figure, and Le Labo's cult Santal 33, among others.  Parlux is a global licensee for celebrities, fashion houses and lifestyle brands. The company launched in 1984 and is privately held. Its licenses include Kenneth Cole, Vince Camuto, Jessica Simpson, Steve Madden and Jason Wu, among others. Most recently, Parlux entered into a partnership with basketball player LeBron James to create The Shop, a line of grooming products distributed through Walmart. Then, in late 2024, the company launched its first fragrance with influencer-turned-designer Danielle Bernstein, the creator behind WeWoreWhat, called WeWoreWhat 001.  Later this year, the company will celebrate another milestone: Paris Hilton's 30th fragrance over 20 years. Called Iconic, the scent will launch this spring.  Singer joined the Glossy Beauty Podcast to discuss the secret sauce behind Parlux's celeb fragrances, the evolving fragrance consumer and 2025 industry predictions.

Have you ever felt like there's something more waiting for you—something bigger, but just out of reach? Maybe you've had moments where you imagined a wonderful career or relationship, a new direction, or a fresh start, but doubts crept in, making it seem unrealistic. On our Love University podcast, we explored what it means to step into your Invincible Self—not by forcing change overnight, but by making small, meaningful shifts that open doors you never knew existed. Here are 7 ways to move toward the life you truly desire in 2025:   Imagine What You Truly Want—Not Just What You Think You Deserve Unfortunately, many people dream within their comfort zone—what they think is realistic or possible. When they do this, however, they limit themselves and mute their passion and drive. But, what if you removed the limits? Picture the life you'd love—career, relationships, health—without the "I can't" or "it's not realistic" filters. The second you stop aiming small, the universe starts expanding the possibilities. Plant the Desire Seed: Are You Growing or Neglecting Your Dreams? Your dreams are like seeds—if you feed them with time, effort, and belief, they grow. But if you let distractions (negative people, doubts, excuses) take over, they dry up. Are you making small daily movements toward your goals, or are you just hoping things will magically happen? Love yourself enough to water the seeds of your desires until they bear the fruits of success. Make Every Action a Win by Keeping Your Vision Strong Every small step adds up. A painter doesn't finish a masterpiece overnight, but makes a little progress daily to create something incredible. Are you thinking of a great business idea, fitness goal, or creative project? Stick with it even when progress feels slow. The key isn't speed—it's consistently moving toward your goals every single day. Call Every Experience a Success (Even the "Failures") What if nothing was truly a failure—just a stepping stone? A lost job might push you toward a dream career. A bad relationship might help you find real love. When you label everything as progress, setbacks lose their power over you, and you feel like a winner no matter what. Focus on What You Want Until Your Actions Feel Natural Have you ever started something that felt like a struggle, but over time, it became second nature? That's what happens when passion meets consistency. The first steps might feel forced, but stick with it, and suddenly, your effort turns into a natural attraction of what you desire. Every Person is a Golden Link in Your Chain of Good No connection is random. Some people push you forward, others teach you lessons, and some fade away to make room for who you really need. Trust that the right people will show up at the right time—whether it's a mentor, friend, romantic partner, or even a stranger who sparks an idea. It's Never Too Late to Take Back Lost Time Do you feel like you've wasted a lot of time in life? In reality, you haven't. Some of the world's most successful people found their passion and achieved their dreams later in life. Vera Wang started designing in her 40s. Stan Lee's biggest comic book hits came in his 60s. The road wasn't straight for them, but every detour had a purpose. In the same way, be open to life changes and use them for your ultimate good.                    It's Time to Step Into Your Invincible Self This is your year to stop waiting and start believing in something bigger for yourself. Here's the truth: Your dreams matter, your past doesn't define you, and every action—big or small—moves you forward. On our next Love University episode, we will dive even deeper into stepping into your power and creating the life you truly deserve. Until then, dream big, take action, and keep spreading love—because the energy you put out is the energy you attract.

That man's name was Walt Disney. Hard to believe isn't it? History, it seems is replete with stories like that: Albert Einstein was turned down by many universities as a teacher, "Harry Potter" was rejected by 12 publishers, Vera Wang tried out for the US figure skating team - but was rejected. You never know how the "rejects" or "strange ones" may turn out - especially when that "ordinary person" is used by an "extraordinary God"! John the Baptist was one! Appreciation? In 30 parts, By FinalStand. Listen to the podcast at Explicit Novels.             “Children must face the scrutiny of their parents”   The Dining Hall was almost a relief. That relief died the moment I saw the banner over the front of the serving area in the Hall. 'Zane Appreciation Day'. Since every word was spelled correctly, it wasn't some stunt of Rio's, but beyond that, the list of suspects was too large to consider. This could be a genuine outpouring of acceptance and sympathy for what I had endured here. If you believe that, I have to ask you: 'Do you want your leprechaun pissing Guinness or Irish Malt?' Most likely, this was going to be some sort of humiliation, and I think I knew the flavor, and I definitely knew how to find out. See, in every seat of the Dining Hall was a big, bowling ball sized white box with a name and secured with a gold and green ribbon, so no cheating; no peeking. That last bit didn't deter me, though. I snuck up on the box marked for Holiday Carpenter. "Zane, does that have your name on it?" Virginia Goodswell asked me, my English teacher and Spiritual Advisor. Hell, if it had been Mrs. Marlowe, I would have opened it anyway, but Virginia was my buddy so her next question didn't mean to stab a stake of regret through my heart. "Where is Vivian?" "I left my room before she was done." I looked to the ground while I kicked some imaginary dust off the slate floor. "Why don't you see if she's been calling you?" she suggested. "She's probably worried." Worried, or homicidal because, ya know, I had sort of run off without my phone, wallet, watch, book bag, or anything else a 21st century student might need. "I ran away like a big, fat chicken," I confessed. "Anything not glued to my body I left behind." "I'll give her a call." She pulled out her phone and hit speed dial #2. I crap since her sick mother is probably #1. I am such a big problem for her, she has my guardian on speed dial! "That is Holiday Carpenter's box, Zane, not yours. Besides, there are strict instructions to not open the boxes until instructed." The panicky response I overheard from Virginia's conversation with Vivian hardly helped my mood. She wanted to know if Virginia knew where I was, she did; that I was okay, I was; and finally, what upset me, because the other girls weren't talking but apparently Mercy had started slapping Barbie Lynn around until Rio and Val pulled her off. Now, that made less than no sense. Wasn't that supposed to work the other way around? Virginia did a double check and sure enough, Mercy had slammed Barbie Lynn into an open wardrobe on my behalf, and Rio and Val had pulled her back. WTF! I am sure that Rio was right beside me on that one. Vivian triple checked that I was physically and mentally okay and she sounded so disappointed, in herself, as she did so. She was bringing my stuff; yes, I am an earthworm. Virginia promised for me that I would remain here until she arrived. Some stupid gesture like a loud public apology, done on bended knee, was blatantly unfair to Vivian, who only meant the best for me. I made a quick apology, not trying to meet her eyes as I said the words and took my stuff. All of 'my' girls seemed equally subdued. A minute after we had garnered our victuals, Vivian put a hand on my elbow. "Don't be so hard on yourself, Zane," Vivian smiled warmly at me. "You take a lot of stress and pressure on yourself. I understand that from time to time you need to take in a tiny bit of private space for yourself. Clearly, you can't schedule any such time because nothing around you stays a secret for very long and no one respects your privacy or even asks what you need." "Vivian," I was puzzled, "you deserve to be righteously pissed with me. You are my Guardian and I promised to stay by you or at least tell you where I was." "Zane, we let you down," Vivian assured me. "It is your dorm room and we are your guests, and we have been rather poor guests at that." "How about we call a truce?" I offer. "I can live with that," Vivian smiled. "Cut the Kumbaya-time, kids," Rio snorted derisively. "Zane, what the fuck happened with Mercy?" Rio playfully punched Mercy's arm to emphasize her uncertainty. "Rio, Bro, drop it," I asked sincerely. "Act like it didn't happen." Rio studied me a second, then got this wickedly evil grin. "What the hell are you talking about, Glenda?" she hefted the box up then shook it. "It seems my damn box is glued shut. Are we celebrating one thousand cunts licked by you, or what?" Because Rio rarely expounded at a level below full volume, next thing we hear is Mrs. Marlow snapping, "Ms. Talon, watch your language; there are good Christian women being forced to sit within the sound of your voice!" "Gotcha, Ms. Mouthful," Rio snapped off with a snap and a finger raised up like a pistol in the air. "What did you say?" Marlowe closed the distance. "She was repeating what I pointed out," I turned and smiled. "I said that you really had it going together this morning; that you were more than a mouthful. That's a hip/trending term to describe someone who is expressing themselves through clothing and make-up." "You are lying, Mr. Braxton," she snarled. "You are probably right, as I do so to you on general principle, but good luck proving it in student court," I grinned right back. We locked wills and she blinked first. "Ms. Phillips," Marlowe turned on Vivian, "what are you going to do about this?" "Zane and Rio, would you please apologize for being rude and insensitive to an educator who only wishes the best for the student body?" Vivian requested. "I so apologize," I bowed my head. "I so apologize as well," Rio tacked on. Only after Marlowe had gone to spread love and sunshine somewhere else did Rio lean across me and whisper to Vivian. "You rock!" Rio giggled gleefully. After all, Rio and I had not apologized to Mrs. Marlowe because neither one of us believed for a minute that she was 'an educator who only wishes the best for the student body'. To that nameless entity, we owed a debt, and to Mrs. Marlow we owed a generous 'fuck you,' and Vivian had made it all possible. "Why, thank you, Rio," Vivian nodded her acceptance of Rio's praise. "Jesus is the Peacemaker and we all should attempt to emulate his teachings." "So, I still don't get to lick you senseless?" Rio snickered. "No, no, you don't," Vivian smiled, even though she didn't look at either of us. Vivian's going to rock as a mom. The next half hour passed quietly. Everyone was curious about the boxes but no one was too worried until a rumor suddenly appeared. When it was suggested that they might have to put on bikinis, the fear set in. I blamed, I don't know but I wish I had thought of it. I was still kicking myself for the missed opportunity when my alien with the right face black and left face white shows up with the right face white and left face black, Mhain and Millicent. "Death Match and you get to referee," Rio teased me. "I'm so jealous; 500 bucks on the one with the soul." Mhain glared hate at us while Millicent looked more than amused. "Zane, come with us," Mhain gloated. I figured that somehow my ordeal was coming to an end so I'd play along. I rose and they steered me to the largest exit, flanking me. Christina and Company grabbed their boxes and jumped up quickly to follow me, though they looked as confused as I was, confirming none of them were the architect of my discomfort. No sooner had we stepped into the cool, sunlit lawn than everyone's phone rang, except mine. I was loving this, right up there with having sandpaper buffing my sunburned abs. "Open the box and follow the instructions," Christina informed me. "Is anyone going to do this?" My phone vibrated once, then my whole body tingled before I could respond to the call. "I am," Mhain gloated. "I was promised something." She knelt and opened her box with enthusiasm; the others did likewise but at a more sedate pace. What came out of each box was almost identical, different only in the anatomical part of the body indicated by the instructions. The objects were all grapefruit-sized fur-balls that made darling little squeaks, squeals and murmurs, amongst other sympathetic noises, all in tiny little voices. They were to be placed on my body, but I didn't know how that would work. "Are we going to do this?" Chastity began to say. "It isn't sticky," Hope was also saying when Mhain's flew out of her hand and hit the side of my left knee. She reached out carefully to retrieve hers while the other girls circled in. The little darlings were proving to be resilient little bastards. Several more leapt at me from the hands of their owners. All this time the furry grapefruit were giving little 'wee!' noises when they shot at me and screeched like demons when they were removed, which was painful when they were on my flesh. I knew who was responsible and she was going to pay, but not right now. I saw my closest allies pulling back. "TLM, Christina," I sighed in resignation. "Let's get this over with." I was being totally self-sacrificial; girls were starting to pile-up on us coming out of the Dining Hall. I didn't want a riot. Mhain had technically tagged me first but not in the designated spot, so I had Christina go first, she put one over my heart, not that I thought Cordelia was stupid, but now she was just piling it on. Mhain went next and she was sizzling and excited, she put it on my lips, shutting me up. At least the girls were polite and organized enough to come at me patiently. A few didn't get the 'memo' and their little rug rats slipped out of their owner's grasp and got to play gleeful kamikaze as they plowed into me. It didn't hurt but I had this secret fear that the tiny terrors would sprout fangs and tear into me. These little guys were murmuring and mumbling and it wasn't until I was truly buried that a horrific realization was made, the more that were on me, the greater their clinging power. In retrospect, this would have been more useful if we hadn't passed the 700 mark. I looked like a puffy, overweight, Sasquatch baby. I could move but sitting down was a dream, as was running or going to the bathroom. The damn things wouldn't shut up either. It fell to Hope and Iona to hurry me (as much as possible) to Assembly; you know that place where I 'sit' in front. At least no one could ask me anything

From embracing discomfort to seeking advice, Crina and Kirsten dive into Dr. Adam Grant's new book on the science of achievement. Discover how grit and persistence can lead to mastery, no matter where you are in your journey. SHOW NOTES In this episode of Crina and Kirsten Get to Work our hosts discuss Adam Grant's new book on the science of achievement.  Ever thought about what you'd like to get better at? Crina wants to learn how to have more fun and Kirsten is still working on figuring out “no.”  Sigh. Mastery can start at any chapter of your life. Take Laura Ingalls Wilder, who penned her first success in her 60s, or Vera Wang, who leapt from ice skates to runway gowns. Julia Child didn't publish her first cookbook until 50, and Phyllis Diller took up stand-up comedy at 37.  Or consider Steve Martin who spent years doing the labor of writing his own jokes to get really good at it - he did not start out being good, he learned to be so very good. Dr. Adam Grant argues in his new book Hidden Potential that those who might lack natural flair but possess the grit to persist, embrace discomfort, and seek advice often outpace the naturally gifted. Think about it: the kid on the soccer field who isn't the fastest but keeps pushing might just outshine the rest with sheer willpower. Society tends to glorify innate talent.  First off, it is just fun to watch someone who is innately good at something.  We may value innate talent because it gives us an easy out when we are not naturally good at something - we do not have to experience the discomfort of trying.  And yet we know that real satisfaction comes from finding our way through the tough stuff.  Child prodigies often find real-world challenges daunting precisely because they haven't navigated the messier, less predictable paths of life.  The dichotomy of talent and challenge is fundamental to understanding our hidden potential. Grant suggests that we embrace the discomfort that signals we are learning, mix up our routine to keep things interesting, and engage in the dual dance of seeking and giving advice.   And there is so much more in Hidden Potential so give it a read.

Show Notes: In this discussion, Will Bachman interviews Henry Oliver, author of the forthcoming book Second Act about late bloomers. Oliver has a background in English literature and marketing. He worked for an MP and later in employment marketing.  Defining a Late Bloomer Henry's interest in late bloomers came from his work in employment marketing, and during his research, he found a wealth of talent in an older demographic. During the course of his research, he found that cognitive ability is the number one predictor of job performance regardless of age.  A late bloomer is someone who is no longer expected to achieve anything significant. However, Henry states that many people start a successful career late in life. Henry's book is structured as a series of short biographical sketches that illustrate themes such as the right people, networks, influence, being at the right place, the right time, and meandering career paths that many high profile leaders, including Margaret Thatcher, are prime examples of the late bloomer.  The Focus on the Book His decision to focus more on the biographical sketch approach was influenced by his background as an A talent and employment brand consultant. He believes that the book should be focused on more than just the social science approach, as it allows him to explore the complexity of life.  The concept of inefficient preparation, as discussed by Henry, is a concept that has been gaining attention in recent years, especially with the emergence of AI. He talks about the meandering career path of Calvin Coolidge. He explains that many people are considering how to prepare for different careers. However, he emphasized that this approach is not necessarily always the best career strategy, as it can lead to inefficient outcomes. One example of this is Dwight Eisenhower, who was a young soldier during World War One and was kept in America to train on tanks. Despite the shrinking army and the lack of pay at the end of the war, Eisenhower continued to study military strategy and find mentors, which eventually paid off with the advent of World War Two. Henry mentions that many people have a meandering inefficiency in their careers, and if they can find a way to switch into a more challenging job, it can pay off well. This combination of a wait-and-see approach and serious planning can help individuals make the most of their time and achieve their career goals. How to Make Networking Work  Henry talks about the problem of focusing on building a network and why it's important to find the person with the right influence for whatever it is you want to do right now. He shares an example of this with the story of Margaret Thatcher's leadership election in the conservative party.  Henry discusses the importance of corporate culture in shaping one's career trajectory, and how the culture helps or hinders how you work. He cites studies of young men sent to the Second World War. The study found that a more ambitious, fast-paced environment with strong leadership and opportunities for development can lead to better performance. He also talks about the detrimental effects of a toxic environment. The discussion turns to putting yourself in the right place in today's work environment. The most fundamental piece of research that Henry found is about hot streaks, where people produce their best work over a long period of time. The study found that people have an explorer phase, where they try out different ideas and move around the world. This is followed by the exploit period when they take action to take steps connected to their primary interest. In today's world, there are no universally-accepted answers to what constitutes an "exploit phase." It depends on the individual's career goals and the circumstances they are in. Steve Jobs, for example, was an example of someone who dropped out of various fields to pursue what eventually became Apple. The Importance of Exploration and Perseverance in Career The book emphasizes the importance of active exploration and perseverance over a sustained period. It emphasizes that people cannot simply move to a new location and hope for success. Instead, active exploration involves attending social events, meeting people, and participating in self-study programs. Second acts involve investing in self-improvement or relationships. Henry emphasizes the importance of live practice and building skills, which can be broad and involve socializing, learning, and networking. He suggests that the rule of 10,000 hours of deliberate exploration should be expanded to include practicing in new areas, including networking and meeting new people. He also believes that it is essential to be prepared to take opportunities. Henry talks about the importance of right timing and the concept of increasing your luck surface area. He gives the example of Ray Kroc who turned McDonald's into the biggest business in the world. At 53, he was a milkshake mixer salesman at McDonald's when he discovered a small family restaurant that had perfected the fast food kitchen. Henry explains how Ray Kroc increased his luck surface area to turn a family business into an international franchise.  Why Extraordinary People are Good Examples  While his book presents examples from extraordinary individuals, Henry believes that the lessons drawn from social science and famous figures can be applied to people of all levels. He stresses the importance of understanding the details of these individuals, such as Vera Wang's story, which highlights her personal struggles and the need for encouragement. Henry states that the internet is full of stories of late bloomers, but they often do not provide a detailed account of how they achieve their success. While his book does offer examples of ordinary people who have achieved their second act career, he believes that digging into larger examples can provide a deeper understanding of how late bloomers work and how they achieve their goals. Henry has been focusing on the social science side of human interaction over the past decade. He has been researching and writing about network science, sociology, economics, and psychology to understand how someone can transition from a hack journalist to the creator of the dictionary. He was surprised by the importance of networks and how being in the right group of people can make a huge difference.  A Word or Two on Writing Motivation Henry talks about the inspiration and researching information for his book. His motivation for writing is to provide a platform where people can read great works and benefit from them. He believes that reading literature not only helps in understanding human interaction but also helps in understanding power dynamics and ambition. For example, he believes that Jane Austen's novels, like Emma, can be useful for understanding human interaction in modern office life. Henry's substack Common Reader, which includes literature, brings in other topics to help readers better understand human interaction and decision-making. He believes that reading Shakespeare can be useful for questions of power, ambition, and leadership. Henry discusses the importance of having a sub-stack for writing and how it can generate more ideas as you read.
