Parents, the world is full of distractions for our teens, and some can be more dangerous than they appear. While we teach them values rooted in faith, we must also be aware of the modern cultural challenges they face. One of those is gambling. Aggressive and pervasive marketing for online platforms along with social media and peer pressure are making it easier for young people to be drawn into sports betting and gaming with real money. This can quickly spiral into addiction, leading to financial hardship and compromising the integrity we strive to instill. The Bible tells us in Hebrews 13:5, “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have.” Let's have open, honest conversations with our teens about the financial, addictive, and moral risks of gambling, grounded in the wisdom of biblical truth and a desire to be obedient followers of Jesus Christ. Remind them that true contentment isn't found in placing bets, but in the blessings God has already provided.

Neuroscientists have spent the past few decades tracing the network of brain systems—some deep and emotional, and others more analytical and deliberate— that work together as we make tough choices like where to invest our money as well as more everyday decisions like which videos to watch online—or, for that matter, which podcast to listen to.You can imagine that the ability to listen in on the brain systems that guide our choices might start to let scientists predict our decisions. But today's guest has taken this a step further, showing that measuring brain activity in just a few individuals can actually forecast widespread social behaviors, like which stock prices are likely to go up or down on the market, or which videos are likely to go viral. "All it takes is one taste and once you've tasted it, it will spiral out of control." That from an Auckland man who's worried if the Online Casino Gambling Bill goes ahead more people could become addicted to gambling. The bill, expected to pass in February next year, will grant licences to up to 15 online casino gambling operators. The minister in charge says it will prioritise harm minimisation while collecting tax revenue, with four percent ringfenced for community returns. But experts say the bill's missing details, as it still allows licensed online casinos to advertise but with restrictions. Bella Craig reports. A warning, this story mentions suicide.

Community groups and charities successfully turned the Government view on giving them a share of online casino profits. It originally set the duty in new laws for licensed online operators at 12 percent, but from today that's risen to16. Four percent will be ring-fenced specifically to go to community groups, in similar fashion to physical casinos. North Wellington Football Club president, Fraser Kirby, says that's a step in the right direction. "I think the positive is that all of the community groups that raised concerns around this have all been listened to, and the bill's been revised accordingly." The Government made a u-turn on their bill concerning online gambling, and operators are now required to hand over four percent of profits to charities and community groups. This is in line with the requirements licensed gambling platforms - such as Lotto, TAB and the pokies - have to work under. Cycling NZ chair Martin Snedden joined D'Arcy to discuss. Catholic Bishops in the Philippines say online gambling has become a new plague or virus that is destroying families, and even causing a kind of slavery. While illegal gambling has always existed in the shadows of society, this new crisis takes place in the smartphones of anyone, including children. The cure to this plague needs to come from every level of society, including at the parish level: Msgr Pedro Quitorio: “It's become a sickness. With all these addictions, people, children, teenagers are becoming, you know… some, some we hear news of taking their lives because of this, so much debt.” Faith Full is a Catholic podcast hosted by Tony Ganzer. In this episode we hear from Msgr. Pedro Quitorio, the Director of the Media Office for the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines. Visit our website: https://www.faithfullpod.com Donate: https://www.faithfullpod.com/support/ Subscribe on iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/faith-full-podcast/id1363835811 YouTube: https://youtu.be/sjFA9QtxwEg Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/34sSHs8hHpOCi5csuTtiIv Today we will learn about the heated issue of online gambling in the Philippines, and what lessons Catholics anywhere might learn from the example there, especially with the rise of online casinos and sports betting in places like the US. To be clear, the Church doesn't say all gambling is wrong or sinful–not at all. But when addiction takes over lives, then the hands and feet of Christ on earth need to be mobilized. Msgr. Pedro Quitorio: “This has become a very strong part now of our new evangelization. It's a matter of, you know, putting the faith in context now, concretely, by the way people move, because this is affecting even, even our faith, even how we practice our faith.” In some corners of the internet or even on TV, it can seem impossible to avoid gambling ads. In the US at least, online sports betting has exploded as states have moved to regulate it more, and capture potential tax revenue. Or some social media influencers will stream high-stakes online slot machine sessions, and win seemingly astronomical amounts. Clips of these wins then sell the dream of winning big. Maybe these people are winning, or maybe these companies offer influencers money to promote the site. Having access to gambling of all sorts from the safety of your smartphone is as convenient as it can be risky, especially for impressionable kids. The Philippines is a country that is generally very Catholic, and very online, especially on social media. The explosion of online gambling just this year has spiraled into a crisis leading the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines to sound the alarm and call for action from the government and the faithful. One of the most troubling issues has been children's ability to access e-wallets, which can ensnare children and their families in debt. After all, this is big business and e-games or e-bingo were the biggest chunk of gross gambling revenue in the first quarter of the year at 51.39 billion Philippine Pesos, or nearly 900 million US dollars. Msgr. Pedro Quitorio said this problem has gotten much worse in just the last year, the last months really, and the reactions are coming just as fast. Since this interview, the Philippines Central Bank ordered e-wallets to be decoupled from online gambling, and the issue has been discussed in the media, by lawmakers, and the president. In listing recommendations though, the Catholic Bishops also called on Catholics to actively help people affected by gambling, which may give some food for thought no matter where you're watching or listening to this from.
Welcome back to Ditch the Labcoat. Today's episode dives deep into a topic that's been quietly reshaping lives and families across the globe: gambling addiction. Host Dr. Mark Bonta sits down with Dr. Daniela Lobo, a leading expert in addiction psychiatry, to explore just how dramatically gambling—especially online and sports betting—has surged in prevalence, fueled by intensive marketing and made even more accessible by the pandemic's isolation.Together, Dr. Bonta and Dr. Lobo break down the reality behind those flashy ads and glossy casino images, peeling back the curtain on the true costs of problem gambling. They explore not just the personal financial and mental fallout, but the ripple effects that devastate families, drive up debt, worsen mental health struggles, and even intersect with substance use disorders. As gambling apps, sports betting, and even crypto-trading continue to blur the lines between entertainment and addiction, the doctors unpack why so many young adults—and increasingly, teens—find themselves hooked.Dr. Lobo shares practical insights for recognizing gambling problems, supporting loved ones, and opening honest conversations with kids. Most importantly, they question whether the billions gained in gambling revenue are truly worth the social and health costs we're only beginning to acknowledge. If you've ever wondered what really drives gambling addiction, how to spot it, or what responsible action looks like for individuals and society, you won't want to miss this eye-opening, evidence-based conversation. If you're a footballer or have a young footballer in the family there's a chance you received an email from New Zealand Football on Friday asking you to have your say on the new Online Casino Gambling (OCG) Bill. It's not just New Zealand Football who are making their participants aware of how this bill could potentially impact them. 33 of our biggest sports codes have come together in an impressively coordinated effort to warn the Government about the massive impact this bill could have on community sport. Basically - it will likely become more expensive for you or your kids to belong to a club if new online gambling outlets aren't required to hand over a percentage of their revenue for local community good. For the last 50 years or so, we've balanced a trade off when it comes to gambling. It is legal, but a share of gambling revenues must go back to the community. Currently, $170 million every year is distributed by gaming trusts to community sport. We all know the trade off - some good comes out of something which is damaging for others. The global online casino market is experiencing unprecedented growth. In 2024, the market was valued at approximately US $19.7 billion, and it's projected to reach $56.8 billion by 2033. New Zealanders can already access offshore gambling websites, but it is against the law to host these websites in New Zealand. So to get in on the action and clip the ticket along the way, the Government is proposing a framework for licensing and regulation of up to 15 online casino gambling operators in NZ, allowing revenue to be brought back into NZ, local oversight and consumer protections. Now, this may sound like a perfectly reasonable approach to you - but there is one thing missing. And that is the community contribution, or an alternative revenue stream for these community organisations. If online gambling grows as expected, less people will be spending their money on traditional gambling outlets. Less revenue means less grants, sport becomes more expensive and out of reach for much of the community, and grass root sports organisations which are already struggling… disappear. No amount of sausage sizzles is going to cover the declining funding. The argument that these new online casinos should not have to make community payments because it would be a perverse incentive to increase gambling activity to increase revenue to cover the contribution - is plain silly. I'm pretty sure increasing gambling activity is one of their main KPI's, regardless of where the revenue goes. And if the Government is worried about New Zealand becoming one of the highest taxed jurisdictions for online gambling, then set aside some of the tax revenue to make up for the lost community funding. Why are we pandering to online gambling outfits? To do so makes what is already an uncomfortable trade-off just feel wonky. Club sport is part of Kiwi culture. It gets us off our devices and outdoors. It gets us moving, it keeps us connected and working together, and it teaches us to be humble. It inspires tenacity, persistence and determination. It allows us to dream and be ambitious and achieve great things. It makes us laugh and cry, celebrate and commiserate, and brings out the best and sometimes worst in us. Without it we will have lost something that's core to our communities. What a ridiculous thing to put at risk. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Government's newly introduced Online Casino Gambling (OCG) Bill has been met with backlash from some on New Zealand's leading sporting bodies. The legislation would regulate online casinos and allow them to operate in New Zealand, but concerns have been raised that the bill won't make them return community funding grants. Cycling NZ Chair Martin Snedden says this bill poses as risk to the future of local sport - as it benefits greatly from such grants. "Sport thrived off the back of that - at the moment, sports are really struggling with the economic environment, accessing sponsorship money's impossible. Local Governments are naturally pulling back because they're in financial trouble themselves, there's a whole confluence of economic problems." In the first of a two part series, we investigate the explosive growth of online gambling since the Covid-19 pandemic. While betting company revenues have soared, many South African individuals and families are facing the consequences. We hear from recovering gambling addicts and explore how economic hardship, weak regulation, and the prevalence of mobile betting platforms are fuelling a national crisis. If you are affected by harmful gambling or are suffering distress or despair you could speak to a health professional, or an organisation that offers support. Details of help available for despair in some countries can be found at Befrienders Worldwide (www.befrienders.org)Produced and presented by Frey Lindsay(Image: South African businessman looking at phone. Ray White speaks to Sibongile Simelane, Executive Director at the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation, as concerns mount over South Africa’s spiralling gambling addiction. More than R1.1 trillion has been lost not on food, housing, or education but on gambling, much of it online and via mobile phones. With even teenagers getting hooked, and reports of SASSA grants and loans being used to fund bets, the human cost is rising: debt, depression, and despair. As the gambling industry booms, we ask: who’s protecting the vulnerable? What role is the government playing? And what impact is this silent epidemic having on our already fragile economy? 702 Breakfast with Bongani Bingwa is broadcast on 702, a Johannesburg based talk radio station. Dr. Phil delves into the world of online gambling, where college men are getting swept up in a whirlwind of bets and risks. Step into the digital arena of online gambling, where college men are placing their bets and risking it all. With a surge in predatory apps and addictive platforms, campuses are becoming battlegrounds for young minds seduced by the allure of easy money. Saul, a recovering addict, says he started gambling online in high school before becoming the guy to avoid on his college campus due to his debts to bookies. Rob, another recovering addict, says he went into debt several times in college and even traveled to Australia to get away from gambling- but was in a casino within 3 hours of landing. Frank, a college sophomore, says he's trying to cut back on gambling but it's hard when everyone on campus is doing it and talking about it. Nick, a recent college grad, says he's a professional sports bettor who makes a living off of a website he made to give tips and advice to other gamblers. Harry, a recovered addict, and gambling therapist, is on the front lines and says apps and websites are designed to addict young men.
