Pickup Truck Roundup: Mitsubishi, UAW Strike, Robins Fly Away

Shoot us a Text.Episode #1359: Mitsubishi is jumping back into the pickup market with help from Nissan, a supplier strike threatens GM's truck production at a critical moment, and the internet-famous F-250 robins have finally left the nest, clearing the way for one very patient delivery.Show Notes with links:Mitsubishi is heading back into the U.S. pickup truck market for the first time in nearly two decades, teaming up with Nissan on a midsize truck while also reviving the iconic Pajero/Montero SUV.Mitsubishi will launch a U.S.-built midsize pickup sourced from Nissan, likely tied to the next-generation Frontier platform expected later this decade. The truck marks Mitsubishi's return to the segment after discontinuing the Raider pickup following the 2010 model year. The strategy is part of a three-step U.S. revival plan: expand off-road offerings, enter new segments through Nissan partnerships, and grow the dealer network with urban satellite stores.Mitsubishi is also reviving the Pajero (Montero) SUV this fall, building it on the Triton pickup platform and creating an entire family of Pajero-branded vehicles.“We will prioritize restoring profitability and work to turn the business around through brand strengthening and product strategies.” — Mitsubishi President Keisuke SugiuraA labor dispute at American Axle is putting pressure on one of GM's most important profit centers. Nearly 1,000 UAW workers have walked off the job, threatening the supply of axles used in Silverado, Sierra, Colorado, and Canyon pickups just as GM ramps up truck production.UAW members at American Axle's Three Rivers, Michigan plant began striking after contract talks broke down over wages and mandatory overtime.Workers say they are still living with wage cuts accepted during the 2008 financial crisis, with many production employees topping out around $22 per hour despite years of strong supplier profits. The plant produces critical axles for GM's full-size and midsize pickups, giving the strike potential to impact some of the automaker's most profitable vehicles.Timing is especially challenging for GM as it looks to capitalize on Ford's pickup production constraints and growing competition from Ram, whose truck sales are up 23% this year.“For 18 years, these members have built you an empire of profit, while getting treated like dirt.” — UAW President Shawn Fain.Remember the F-250 that became a federally protected bird sanctuary? The robins have officially left the nest, the truck can finally head to its new owner, and the dealership's unexpected wildlife story turned into an international feel-good headline.Lugnut, Axle, Diesel and Turbo officially flew away last week, ending a month-long delivery delay for the customer's F-250.What started as a quirky dealership story ended up earning coverage from The New York Times, People, The Guardian, Automotive News and even Ford's corporate media channels.Olathe Ford-Lincoln leaned into the moment, giving the birds names, posting updates, and turning a routine vehicle delivery into a viral community story. The customer, a construction company, never pressured the dealership and agreed to let nature take its course before taking delivery.“The new owners said they were in no hurry to get the truck and the robins could finish raising their family.” — Diane Johnson, Executive Director, Operation WildLife.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast  as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

Podcasting is entering a new phase, and this episode goes straight into the infrastructure, business models, and platform shifts shaping what comes next. On episode 659 of The New Media Show, Host and Podcast Hall of Famer Rob Greenlee shares the microphone with Sharon Taylor, Chief Revenue Officer at Triton Digital (Spreaker & Omny Studio), for a deep conversation about where the podcasting market is heading right now. Sharon brings years of experience from Omny Studio, Triton Digital, and Spreaker, making her one of the best people to help unpack what is changing across hosting, monetization, video, AI, advertiser demand, and measurement. We talk through why podcasting is not simply becoming video-first, even as video becomes a bigger part of how shows are discovered and monetized. Sharon makes a strong case that audio remains at the center of the medium, but the future is clearly becoming more multi-format. That means creators, publishers, and platforms need to think differently about how they distribute content, measure audience behavior, and build sustainable business models for both audio and video. A big part of this conversation focuses on Triton Digital's role in the market today and why its combination of Omny Studio, Spreaker, and broader ad tech infrastructure makes it an important player in podcasting's next chapter. Sharon explains the unique roots of Omny Studio as a platform built for large-scale broadcast and enterprise publishing needs, while Spreaker helped pioneer early podcast programmatic monetization for creators. That combination gives Triton a unique perspective on both professional publishing and creator-driven growth. We also spend time on Apple's HLS video move and what it may mean for podcasting's future. Sharon shares how Triton had already been preparing for a broader video environment and why Apple's support for HLS is such a meaningful shift. We discuss how HLS could improve flexibility around delivery, ad insertion, and measurement, while still raising important questions about RSS, open distribution, and whether major platforms may slowly pull podcasting into more platform-specific publishing models over time. Another major topic in this episode is trust. From programmatic advertising to AI-generated content to labeling and transparency, Sharon and I explore how podcasting can continue to grow without losing the authentic connection that made the medium valuable in the first place. We both agree that podcasting still has enormous strength as an audio-led medium, but the industry is now balancing openness, innovation, and monetization in ways that will define the next few years. This is a wide-ranging and important discussion for anyone watching the evolution of podcasting, video, ad tech, platform power, and the future of open media. Topics covered – Why Triton Digital matters in podcasting right now – Sharon Taylor's path from Omny Studio to Triton CRO – What Triton is seeing in audio versus video audience behavior – Why podcasting is becoming multi-format, not simply video-first – How Omny Studio and Spreaker fit different parts of the publishing market – What Apple's HLS video move changes for publishers and hosting platforms – Why advertiser confidence and better measurement matter more than ever – The future of RSS, open podcasting, and platform fragmentation – How AI-generated content is affecting publishing growth and industry trust – Where Sharon sees the next big opportunities for podcast growth Guest Sharon Taylor is the Chief Revenue Officer at Triton Digital. She was appointed to the CRO role in August 2025 after helping lead Triton's podcast and content delivery efforts. Before joining Triton, Sharon was CEO of Omny Studio and played a key role in building it into one of the leading enterprise podcast platforms before its acquisition by Triton Digital. More on the Laguardia crash from the NTSB and ASDE-X; a near-collision at LAX involving a Frontier flight and two trucks; a United Airlines plane struck two de-icing trucks; the FAA requested funding for 2,300 controller trainees; a Navy MQ-4C Triton reconnaissance drone went missing; and air taxis are coming to Utah. Aviation News Seconds before LaGuardia crash, controller cleared the fire truck to cross the runway, NTSB says The NTSB has determined that a LaGuardia Airport air traffic controller cleared the fire truck to cross a runway 12 seconds before the Air Canada flight touched down. The two pilots were killed in the resulting collision. The NTSB has yet to identify how this was allowed to happen. Unanswered questions: Are two overnight duty controllers enough? Why didn't a runway warning system sound an alert? Who was coordinating air and ground traffic? Did the fire truck hear the controller's last-second pleas to stop? LaGuardia has an advanced surface surveillance system called Airport Surface Detection Equipment, Model X (ASDE-X). This system displays the locations of planes and vehicles to the Controllers. The fire truck didn't have a transponder, but the emergency vehicles behind it stopped in time. Possibly, the close proximity of the vehicles merging kept the system from triggering an alarm. ASDE-X is a surveillance system that uses radar, multilateration, and satellite technology to allow air traffic controllers to track the surface movement of aircraft and vehicles. It was developed to help reduce critical Category A and B runway incursions. ASDE-X overview from FAA presentation. The ASDE-X collects data from a variety of sensors: Surface surveillance radar located on top of the air traffic control tower and/or surface surveillance radar located on a remote tower Multilateration (MLat) sensors located around the airport Airport Surveillance Radars, such as the Mode S Automatic Dependent Surveillance — Broadcast (ADS-B) sensors Terminal automation system to obtain flight plan data. Multilateration (MLat) sensors determine an object’s position by measuring the time differences of signals received from multiple known locations. They are commonly used in applications such as air traffic control and navigation to accurately track the locations of vehicles or devices. Frontier Airlines Pilots ‘Slam On the Brakes' to Avoid Colliding With Two Trucks at Los Angeles International Airport Frontier Airlines flight F9-3216, an Airbus A321, was taxiing for departure at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) when it encountered two trucks that cut it off. To avoid a collision, the pilots were forced to “slam on the brakes.” The Frontier pilot told LAX controllers, “It happened so fast, both of us are like holy shit and slammed on the brakes… I might have to call the flight attendants, make sure everyone is alright in the back. It was real close… close as I've ever seen.” Plane suffered ‘substantial’ damage after hitting de-icing trucks at Denver airport On March 6, 2026, a United Airlines plane struck two de-icing trucks at Denver International Airport (DIA) as it was taxiing out of the de-icing pad. No on-board injuries occurred, although one de-icing agent suffered minor injuries. The plane suffered substantial damage. There was some confusion about whether the plane had been cleared to leave the de-icing pad. FAA proposes to hire 2,300 air traffic controllers in budget request At the end of September, the FAA employed 13,164 air traffic controllers, about 3,500 short of the targeted staffing level. The FAA's fiscal 2027 budget request proposes funding to hire 2,300 air traffic controller trainees, with about $95.4 million earmarked for that effort. A WSOC Charlotte, SC video reports that gamers are being offered paid training and other incentives if they apply. Navy MQ-4C Triton's Fate Unknown After Disappearing From Flight Tracking Over Persian Gulf Open-source tracking indicates the surveillance drone suddenly turned toward Iran and transmitted the universal 7700 emergency code. It descended from more than 50,000 feet toward approximately 9,000 feet, then disappeared from public tracking networks. The Northrop Grumman MQ-4C Triton is the maritime version of RQ-4 Global Hawk. It is a high-altitude long-endurance (HALE) unmanned surveillance aircraft flown by the United States Navy and the Royal Australian Air Force. The Navy had 20 Triton aircraft in service in 2025, and had planned to acquire seven more. The unit cost was estimated to be just over $238 million. See: US Navy MQ-4C Triton Vanishes Near Iran After Emergency Code: Did Tehran Just Down America's US$200 Million Spy Drone? Utah's getting air taxis sooner than expected. Here's when. Paul Damron, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) air mobility program manager, says unmanned electric aircraft might be carrying packages and medical supplies as early as this summer. The FAA has designated UDOT to lead one of eight national pilot programs focused on integrating electric aircraft into various airspaces. Initially operating out of Utah's airports, the long-term goal is to create “vertiports” and connect them to existing transit modes. Under the uFLY pilot program, Utah leads a five-state partnership with Oregon, Idaho, Arizona, and Oklahoma. Aircraft will be tested under a variety of environmental conditions. Our Tomino-thon kicks off with a history-focused episode exploring the origins of Tomino Yoshiyuki leading up to the creation of his first full original series, Zambot 3 (which we'll be reviewing next week). Where did this mad creative genius come from, and what was he up to in the years before he earned his ‘Kill ‘em all' moniker? This episode takes us from the political climate in Japan during Tomino's college years, to Tomino's time at Mushi Pro becoming one of the most prolific episode directors on Tezuka Osamu's Mighty Atom (aka Astro Boy), to his first directorial project, a (very loose) adaptation of Tezuka's Triton of the Sea manga. We explore how he became known as the anime industry's ‘wandering storyboard man' in the 1970s, and end with the creation of the studio that became Sunrise, Tomino's creative home for the bulk of his career. It's a very fun, extremely informative episode that lays the foundation for the season to come.  Enjoy, and come back next week as we review Invincible Super Man Zambot 3, the show which first earned Tomino his ‘kill ‘em all' moniker!  Time Chart: Theme Song: 0:00:00 – 0:01:37 Intro and Tomino Origins Part 1: 0:01:37 – 0:16:30 Mighty Atom/Astro Boy: 0:16:30 – 0:59:04 Tomino Origins Part 2: 0:59:04 – 1:09:25 Eyecatch Break: 1:09:25 – 1:10:37 Triton of the Sea: 1:10:37 – 1:48:23 Wrap-up: 1:48:23 – 1:54:54 End Theme: 1:54:54 – 1:57:03 Subscribe to our YouTube channels!  Japanimation Station: https://www.youtube.com/c/japanimationstation   Purely Academic: https://www.youtube.com/@purelyacademicpodcast Read Jonathan Lack's movie reviews and stay up to date with all our podcast projects at https://www.jonathanlack.com Subscribe to PURELY ACADEMIC, our monthly variety podcast about movies, video games, TV, and more: https://purelyacademic.simplecast.com Follow Japanimation Station on Instagram and Threads @JapanimationStationPodhttps://www.instagram.com/japanimationstationpod/ Read Jonathan's book 200 Reviews in Paperback or on Kindle – https://a.co/d/bLx53vK “Tominoson-G Mk. WPH #601: Is Tom Dwan STILL The G.O.A.T????

Weekly Poker Hand with Jonathan Little

Hustler Casino Live's Million Dollar Game did exactly what it says and produced many million dollar pots! Tom Dwan and Santhosh Suvarna start this hand with premium pocket pairs and it looks likely that Suvarna will lose a massive one. However, a favorable runout for Suvarna sees him end with quads – the super nuts! Is Tom Dwan still the G.O.A.T and will he correctly check back, or will Suvarna find the perfect line to stack Dwan?! Usually when you flop a hand like top set on a very dry board and your opponents decide to bet into you, it is often a good strategy to slowplay since it is likely they don't have a strong hand. This is even more the case against a loose splashy opponent who likes to double barrel and will take the opportunity to bluff more than usual.. It also helps protect your calling range and stops you being exploited as calling a bet doesn't necessarily always mean that you have a medium to weak hand. Tom Dwan also known as durrrr from his online days is a 39 year old American professional poker player. He is a favorite poker player for many around the world as they would watch him battle in the highest stakes cash games on Full Tilt Poker before poker's Black Friday hit. Dwan is known for his fearless style and crazy bluffs. He was a regular on Poker After Dark and High Stakes Poker. Today, Durrrr is mostly known to play in high stakes private games in Asia. Durrrr is often seen on the Triton poker tour playing in the largest buy-in poker tournaments in the world. Dwan currently has over $6,900,000 in live poker tournament earnings which puts him in the top 300 on the all time money list. Santhosh Suvarna is an Indian businessman active in the entertainment and real estate sectors. He’s known for promoting regional cinema and successfully investing in various property developments. His business skills and commitment to quality have made him a respected figure, inspiring many through his ventures and community efforts. Suvarna has over $19,800,000 in live poker tournament earnings, putting him in the top 100 on poker's all-time money list. He has two World Series of Poker (WSOP) Bracelets. The first was from a $50,000 No-Limit Hold'em High Roller event at the 2023 World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE). The second came in at the 2024 WSOP, where he won the $250,000 Super High Roller for a career high-score of $5,415,152. Hustler Casino Live is a full-scale, high value poker production. Unscripted and unedited, they host regular poker streams such as ‘Max Pain Monday' and ‘Thirsty Thursday'. Some of the most notable poker players to have appeared on the show are Phil Ivey ‘The Tiger Woods of Poker' ‘RaiseOnce', Tom Dwan 'durrrr', Phil Hellmuth ‘The Poker Brat', Chris Moneymaker, Doug Polk ‘WCGRider, Garrett Adelstein ‘Gman', Tony Guoga ‘Tony G' and many more. Preflop:Alan Keating raises to $10,000 in the cutoff with 64 of diamonds before Tom Dwan chooses to 3-bet to $35,000 from the button with pocket kings. Santhosh Suvarna doesn't 4-bet with pocket queens and cold calls from the small blind. Keating calls with his suited one gapper and the three poker players head to the flop. Flop – Qc 8d 2s:Suvarna flops the nuts with top set and starts with a check. Keating checks his six-high with a backdoor straight draw and backdoor flush draw before Dwan places out a continuation bet of $70,000 with his overpair. Suvarna smooth calls with his set of queens and Keating folds. Turn – 5h:The nuts stay the same on the five of hearts turn and Suvarna checks once more. Dwan elects to fire a second barrel of $165,000, perhaps hoping to get value from Suvarna if he has top pair. With the nuts, Suvarna calls again. River – Qs:The final queen in the deck arrives on the river and Suvarna ends up with quads. Suvarna checks for the last time and Dwan has to decide whether to bet or check his cowboys back. Will Dwan correctly check it back and save himself some money, or will he value own himself and lose a huge pot to Suvarna's four of a kind? Stay tuned to the end of this poker video to see what happens. WPH #595: He LOST His MIND In This $1,500,000 POT!

Weekly Poker Hand with Jonathan Little

Playing in a huge invitational poker cash game during the Triton Poker Series Montenegro, Dan ‘Jungleman' Cates and Tan Xuan get involved in a massive pot. But has he lost his mind in this $1,500,000 pot? Xuan must decide whether to unload the clip with a triple barrel bluff. The problem is that Cates holds the stone cold nuts. Will Xuan make the wrong decision and punt it off into Cates, or will he give up on the bluff and save himself almost $750,000? When playing poker tournaments or cash games, it is important to protect your calling range. This means that when you call a bet, raise, or check-raise, your range should not only consist of draws or medium-strength hands. You should occasionally have very strong hands, including the nuts, in your calling range. By doing this, you make it much harder for your opponents to exploit you, as they cannot be sure whether your call represents a draw, a marginal hand, or a monster. Dan Cates, also known as Jungleman and w00ki3z, is a 34-year-old from the USA and is regarded by many as one of the best poker players in the world both online and live. He has played in all the high stakes poker cash games around the world for many years. He has over $18,800,000 in live poker tournament earnings, putting him in the top 100 on the all-time money list. He famously won the World Series of Poker (WSOP) $50,000 Players Championship (regarded as one of the hardest poker tournaments to win) in 2021 and again in 2022. Since 2012, Cates has played over 89 live streamed cash games and has won more than $14,400,000. Cates has won the most in history on live streamed poker gash games. Tan Xuan is a Chinese businessman from Wuhan. Xuan has won over $12,300,000 in live poker tournament earnings, putting him in the top 150 on poker's all time money list. His biggest score of $2,308,384 came during the 2018 Triton Poker Super High Roller Series Montenegro, where he finished second in the HK$1,000,000 No Limit Hold’em – Short Deck Ante Only tournament. Since 2018, Since 2018 Xuan has played on over 77 live streamed poker cash games and has lost over $7,700,000. Triton Poker was founded in 2015 by Paul Phua and Richard Yong; their aim was to attract a healthy mixture of recreational poker players and seasoned poker professionals. Part of what makes the Triton Series so special is that it's open to a wide range of poker players – not just a select few. They envisioned Triton as a series of poker events providing excellent entertainment value for audiences passionate about poker. Some of the most famous poker players to have appeared at Triton events have been Phil Ivey ‘RaiseOnce', Tom Dwan ‘Durrr', Patrick Antonius ‘The Finn', Michael Addamo ‘imluckbox', Chris Brewer, Jason Koon ‘JAKoon1985', Tony G, Dan Cates ‘Jungleman', Doug Polk ‘WCGRider', Stephen Chidwick ‘stevie444', Linus Loeliger ‘LLinusLLove', Isaac Haxton ‘philivey2694', Mikita Badziakouski ‘fish2013', Timofey Kuznetsov ‘Trueteller' and many more. Preflop:With the $4,000 straddle on, Paul Phua raises from early position with pocket sevens to $10,000. Tan Xuan calls from the button holding 98 of hearts and Dan Cates defends KQo from the under the gun straddle. Flop – Ac Jd 3s:Cates is first to act and checks his gutshot straight draw to broadway. Phua, with his two hockey sticks, opts not to continuation bet and checks. Xuan's suited connector has flopped terribly as he just has a backdraw straight draw. He bets $17,000 as a bluff and only Cates calls from out of position. Turn – Ts:Heads-up to the ten of spades turn, which helps improve Cates to the nuts with a broadway straight. Cates checks for a second time and Xuan, who despite picking up an open ended straight draw, is drawing dead. Xuan doesn't know this as he chooses to fire a second barrel for $35,000. Cates takes the most aggressive option available to him by check raising to $125,000. Xuan doesn't believe the story Cates is telling, so he decides to 3-bet to $325,000. Cates sets the trap by just calling and the two poker players head to a river. River – 6h:Nothing changes on the six of hearts river, and Cates checks the action over to Xuan. With just nine-high, will Xuan shove all in or will he check behind and give up on his bluff? Stay tuned to the end of this poker video to see what happens!
