Paul S. Edwards is a lawyer, a family man with two children, and has just published his first sci-fi novel, 'The Triton Run'. He found time to write it... anywhere. If he was early at a football game, he'd get words down. If he was at a gig with a few minutes to spare, he'd write. On the sofa with his family watching TV, he will get down it it. His new novel is 'The Triton Run', the start of a new sci-fi series which spans planets and, Paul hopes, does something a bit different in the genre. We discuss how it's important to be inspired by what's come before, but not derivative of it... and there's a fine line in sci-fi. You can hear why he's trying to brand and market not just the novel, but also himself. He's made a short-life website to help with that - paulsedwards.comWe discuss how he changes writing his second novel which his publisher was quite keen for, after taking a while on the debut, what he knows needs to be in sci-fi, and how he found his publishers, Northodox Press.Subscribe to the Substack and let me know what you like to hear in the podcast - writersroutine.substack.comSupport the show at patreon.com/writersroutine@writerspodwritersroutine.com Hosted on Acast.

Robert Weis - Author, Speaker, and Former President of Walt Disney Imagineering Disney Night Live had the honor, interviewing Robert Weis. Bob is an author, speaker, and the Former President of Walt Disney Imagineering. Skipper Jay and I were giddy getting to speak with Bob, asking him questions about his illustrious career as a Disney Imagineer. With over forty years as an Imagineer, Bob worked on so many iconic projects we all know and love (Ep. 90/S3 from 02Nov2024). Bob has also written two books. Dream Chasing and Ghost Dog. So be sure to look for them and enjoy. He was an Imagineer over a forty-year span, from 1980 to 2023. In those years, Bob worked at every Disney Park and resort around the world. He was president of Walt Disney Imagineering from 2016 to 2022, and a Disney Global Imagineering Ambassador after that. His passion for storytelling and creative collaboration, new technologies, and for the vibrancy of the guest experience has driven him through projects from Tokyo Disneyland (and later its accompanying park, Tokyo DisneySea) and Disney Hollywood Studios to the reinvention of Disney California Adventure and on to Shanghai Disneyland. Weis also led the creative development of the new Triton class of cruise ships, the first of which was the critically acclaimed Disney Wish. The spectacular “Triton Fountain” was carved by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1642 for Pope Urban VIII for the piazza named after him – the Piazza Barberini – in the heart of Rome. Made of travertine stone, the fountain depicts the sea god kneeling upon a shell blowing into a conch out of which water projects. The base of the statue consists of four rather scary-looking dolphins whose tails entwine the papal keys and Barberini coat of arms, which is a shield with three bumble bees on it.
In this episode of the Business of Boating podcast, we sit down with Bruce Jones, co-founder of Triton Submarines, to explore the fascinating world of deep-sea exploration. As a pioneer in submersible design and innovation, Bruce discusses Triton's evolution from early models to cutting-edge vessels capable of reaching full ocean depths. He shares insights on the unique challenges of engineering for the deep sea, how Triton collaborates with adventurers, scientists, and filmmakers, and the growing demand for luxury submersibles in the superyacht market. This conversation offers a deep dive into both the technical and business aspects of one of the marine industry's most unique niches, well before the tragic Titan sub incident shifted the global narrative on submersible safety. Whether you're fascinated by the oceans or curious about how to thrive in a specialized market, this episode is a must-listen.Triton Submarines Merrill CharetteMIDA.PRO - Marine Industry Digital Agency - MarketingNauticEd - The Standard In BoatingSupport the show

SpaceTime Series 27 Episode 123*Discovery of a New Region within the Earth's CoreScientists have uncovered a doughnut-shaped region within Earth's molten liquid outer core, located at low latitudes parallel to the equator. This torus-like zone was detected due to seismic waves travelling slower through this area compared to the rest of the liquid outer core. The discovery, published in Science Advances, suggests that this region could be several hundred kilometres thick and contains a high concentration of light chemical elements, which may be affecting the seismic wave speeds. The findings provide new insights into the Earth's magnetic field and its potential future changes.*Fresh Questions about the True Origins of the Earth's MoonA new hypothesis challenges the widely accepted giant impact theory of the Moon's formation. The study proposes that the Moon was captured during a close encounter between the young Earth and a separate terrestrial binary planetary system. This theory could explain the Moon's current orbital plane, more aligned with the sun's ecliptic than Earth's equator. The study opens the door to further exploration of the Moon's origins, especially considering its chemical similarities to Earth.*New Study Reveals More Secrets about Pluto's Binary Partner, CharonNASA's Webb Space Telescope has revealed that Charon, Pluto's binary partner, has significant reserves of carbon dioxide and hydrogen peroxide on its surface. The carbon dioxide ice forms a thin veneer over a water ice-rich subsurface. The study, published in Nature Communications, suggests that the carbon dioxide was likely stored beneath the surface until exposed by impacts, while hydrogen peroxide results from radiation breaking apart water ice. These findings add to the understanding of Charon's chemical composition and its geological history.00:00:00 - This is spacetime series 27, episode 123 for broadcast on 11 October 202400:00:46 - Scientists have detected a new doughnut shaped region within the Earth's molten liquid core00:12:31 - A new study has come up with a different hypothesis to explain the origin of the moon00:17:46 - NASA's Webb Space Telescope reveals vast reserves of carbon dioxide on Pluto's surface00:21:19 - People with type two diabetes who sleep short may develop microvascular disease00:24:23 - Movie producers claim they've accidentally captured footage of a lake monster00:27:23 - Spacetime is available every Monday, Wednesday and Friday through various podcasting platformswww.spacetimewithstuartgary.comwww.bitesz.com
The giant planets of the outer solar system are like mini-solar systems on their own, because each has a large entourage of moons. Consider Neptune, the solar system’s fourth-largest major planet, which is putting in its best showing of the year. It rises at sunset and remains in the sky all night. It’s also at its brightest for the year. But it’s still so faint that you need a telescope to see it, in the constellation Pisces. Until 1989, astronomers knew of only two moons orbiting Neptune. But 35 years ago, the Voyager 2 spacecraft discovered a half-dozen more moons as it flew past the planet. And since then, astronomers have used telescopes on the ground to find even more, bringing the total to 16. Some of the moons probably formed with Neptune, four and a half billion years ago. But some of the more recently discovered moons may have been asteroids that were captured by Neptune’s gravity. And others may be fractured remains of a larger moon that split apart when it was hit by an asteroid or comet. Neptune’s biggest moon may be a newcomer as well. Triton orbits in the opposite direction from most of Neptune’s moons, suggesting that the planet captured it in the distant past. And billions of years in the future, Triton will move so close to Neptune that the planet’s gravity will rip it apart. That will create a giant but short-lived ring around this giant planet. More about Neptune tomorrow. Script by Damond Benningfield

"The Little Mermaid" sparked the Disney Renaissance of the '90s, burning unforgettable songs like "Under The Sea" and "Part of Your World" into the memories of Gen X and Millennials alike. Since then, Pixar and other studios have pushed animated features to levels we never thought possible. Digital framerates, lighting, sound and design are near perfection, making Disney's 1989 release feel a little dated. But old isn't necessarily bad. So listener Jackson M. posed this question to Shat The Movies: Does a 35-year-old "The Little Mermaid" still hold up? And it was a tough one to answer. In this episode, the Shat Crew explores whether Ariel was a nightmare child, why King Triton entrusted her safety to a singing crab and how Disney handled a teen mermaid's transition into a human girl.
