So, one evening, Nick is watching “Restoration Road”, a home rehab TV show. And there he sees host Clint Harp interviewing Tim Franklin, whose local company is rehabbing an 1884 historic Akron mansion, right near downtown! The above raises the question: How is there a national television show focusing an entire episode on our very own Akron, Ohio, and no one in Akron seems to be aware of it? After his first love, music, Tim Franklin owned a record store.  Later, Tim started Franklin and Associates  Design-Builder, a successful custom home building company.  In this episode, we discuss historic buildings, Akron's media presence, and, of course, favorite bands! Listen Thursday, August 8, at 10 pm on The Summit FM, 91.3, or later on Apple, Spotify, Google, Podbean, SoundCloud, YouTube, or wherever you get your podcasts!

This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Friday, February 17.Friday will be cold, but still not too bad for February-- and then it will warm up again over the weekend. According to the National Weather Service it will be sunny, with a high near 21 degrees. The wind chill values will be as low as -5 degrees. On Friday night it will be clear, with the temperature rising to 1 degree below the high at 20 degrees. Nearly five years after the “newbo evolve” festival featuring national recording stars and reality TV personalities turned into a financial debacle instead of a signature event, two of its key organizers were ordered Thursday to report to prison and pay over $1 million to a bank they defrauded to help bankroll it.Doug S. Hargrave, 56, now of Puyallup, Wash., and Aaron McCreight, 47, now of Dothan, Ala., each pleaded guilty last year in U.S. District Court to one felony count each of bank fraud.Hargrave was sentenced to 15 months and McCreight was sentenced to 18 months in prison. The two also are jointly liable for $1.4 million in restitution to be paid to Bankers Trust. The 2018 three-day festival featured headliners Kelly Clarkson and Maroon 5, and speakers including fashion designers Carson Kressley and Christian Siriano, filmmaker John Waters, woodworker Clint Harp and U.S. Olympian Adam Rippon, among others.During Hargrave's plea hearing last year, he admitted that before the festival he sent a fraudulent budget, under McCreight's direction, to Bankers Trust in support of a request for an increased loan. The budget misrepresented how many tickets already had been sold and how many more ticket sales were anticipated.Cash awards for pain, suffering and other non-economic complications from medical malpractice lawsuits will be capped under a new provision signed into law Thursday by Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds. Those non-economic damages in medical malpractice cases are now capped at $2 million for cases in which a hospital is found to be at fault, and $1 million when the doctor is at fault. The new law, which becomes effective immediately, does not cap jury awards for economic or punitive damages.Proponents of the legislation said it's needed to help contain insurance costs for hospitals, and to help recruit and retain doctors, especially in rural areas of the state. While opponents pointed out that most malpractice cases do not go to trial, and states without caps are having trouble recruiting doctors as well. While efforts stalled last year, U.S. Sens. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., say they have new confidence a pair of bills they are pushing forward can pass this Congress and help Americans save millions each month on prescription drug costs. The bills — the Preserve Access to Affordable Generics and Biosimilars Act and the Stop STALLING Act — recently passed the Senate Judiciary Committee with strong bipartisan support. The bills would limit larger pharmaceutical companies from trying to keep generic forms of certain prescription drugs from going to market. In some cases, Klobuchar and Grassley say, the bigger companies pay the generic drugmakers to keep the cheaper products off store shelves or even try to stop the approval process.

Michelle Burford is a celebrity memoir collaborator who's written for hugely successful women like Cicely Tyson, Alicia Keys and Simone Biles. Having carved out a niche writing with famous Black women she's also collaborated on the traumatic memoir of Michelle Knight, kidnapped and held captive by Ariel Castro in Cleveland, Ohio for ten years – and TV carpenter, Clint Harp. About this episode This is a very unique episode of The Startup Story because this week I am sharing my story. Listeners reach out to me often, wanting to know more about my story and why I am passionate about what I am doing with this podcast. The hard part for me has been finding the right person to interview me. One of the aspects of The Startup Story that I love so much is the conversational side of the show. I soon realized the perfect interviewer was right in front of me. This week, my wife, Melissa McKinney, helps me unpack my entrepreneurial journey for you. Allow me to introduce myself, I'm James McKinney, Creator and Host of The Startup Story podcast. With over 30,000 listeners, The Startup Story has unpacked the entrepreneurial journey of some of the most amazing people, including founders like Jason McCann from Varidesk, Larry Namer from E! Entertainment Television, and Clint Harp from HGTV and Harp Design Co. Throughout our 49 episodes you have heard me relate to founders that have overcome challenges and obstacles. You've heard me ask questions about how their marriages were impacted throughout their journey. Those questions are not arbitrary. The reason I asked them was because of my own journey. It's that relatability to the founder that makes the stories so compelling and why you keep coming back. So, just as we've done for the last 49 episodes we have to start each story at the very beginning. My beginning was far from normal. This is my Startup Story. In this episode, you'll hear About my early childhood, being a child of divorce and how it affected me How as a child, I watched my dad grow his side hustle into a multimillion-dollar enterprise Some of my early side hustles, dating all the way back to elementary school How in high school I created one of the first direct to consumer CD distribution businesses and the important (hard) life lessons I learned from the experience About being kicked out at the age of 16, living on my own, and how my dad delivered discipline in an intentional way How learning lessons of hard work and determination affected me as I continued to grow My focus and what I wanted to do with my life and how and why I joined the Marines What my life was like after the military, including going to Jr. College and starting a bookkeeping services business Why passion is so important in every person's journey About building and growing a promotional product business and recollecting on the day I lost it all If you are a married entrepreneur then you need to understand that this journey is not just yours What I did after ending the promotional product business, including working at Disney and looking to provide a stable life for my family How working at Disney led me to believe in myself and owning the title of entrepreneur I answer the question, “Do you believe that entrepreneurs are born or do you believe that they're made?” “There is a ton of value in the lessons learned when you endure the fire.” —James McKinney Resources from this episode Article $50 offer: https://www.article.com/startupstory James McKinney on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamesmckinney1/ The Startup Story on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thestartupstory/ Share the Podcast The Startup Story community has been so incredible sharing our podcast with others, and we thank you! About this episode This week's episode was a special one for me to create. Why? Well it was not due to the celebrity status of our featured founder nor was it due to his gift for handcrafted woodworking (although I am fascinated by woodworking). This episode was special because of how incredibly similar my entrepreneurial story was to this week's guest, Clint Harp. Yes, this week's featured founder is Clint Harp, co-founder of Harp Design Co., and America's favorite furniture maker from the hit HGTV show Fixer Upper. While Fixer Upper made Clint Harp a household name, he was actually just a few years into his entrepreneurial journey before the show took off. There were so many incredible moments he shared. In fact, despite this episode's length, there was so much we did not cover. You can learn more about Clint in his book, “Handcrafted: A Woodworker's Story.” In this episode, you will learn some incredible lessons about being considerate of your family when jumping into a startup. You will also hear, firsthand from Clint, how critical it is to listen to the wisdom of those closest to you. Finally, you will learn that while it might be painful to move on to something different, you have to stay aware or you will miss the next great opportunity. Before Clint started Harp Design Co., his journey included stints in ministry, mission work, and even medical device sales. While that may surprise you now, once you hear about his early days and his upbringing it will all make perfect sense. This is Clint's startup story. In this episode you'll hear Clint's early childhood, being raised by a dreamer, and rolling around to backwoods churches and big tent revivals with his mother, so she could sing; plus the impact her journey had on him His dreams and aspirations as a child, including becoming a professional baseball player His journey as a musician, a ministry worship leader, and finally getting to a point of being honest with himself that a career in music was not going to happen His transition away from music and what came next: medical device sales The importance of exercising your brain, vocalizing big, crazy dreams, and seeing where things lead How and when his adventure into woodworking began The beginnings of Harp Design Co. and the importance of listening to (and leaning into) your partner or those you are closest to Startup lessons: realizing startup is going to be a lot harder than anticipated Clint talks about when he moved to Waco, TX, the struggle he experienced during those years, and how by persevering, it led him to the opportunity with HGTV's Fixer Upper Resources from this episode Our Sponsor, MovoCash: https://www.ththestartupstory.co/MovoCash Connect with Clint Harp on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/clint-harp-3aa96068/ Harp Design Co.: https://harpdesignco.com HGTV's Fixer Upper: https://www.hgtv.com/shows/fixer-upper Clint's book, Handcrafted: A Woodworker's Story - https://amzn.to/2XNymJz Share our show The Startup Story community has been so incredible sharing our podcast with others, and we thank you! Clint Harp and his wife Kelly own their own handmade furniture design business Harp Design in Waco Tx.  He was formerly a regularly recurring guest in the hit TV show Fixer Upper and currently stars in his own television series called Wood Work. His new book is called Handcrafted: A Woodworker's Story   Some interesting insights from this episode:   Sometimes we may hang on to a dream for too long. His original dream was to be a musician but eventually realized that he didn't have the talent and had to accept that his life's plan lay elsewhere.   He quit a lucrative job in medical sales without any safety net to pursue his passion of building furniture.   Only by being 100% honest with his wife and admitting that he was struggling with his new furniture design business was he able to earn her trust and respect which allowed their marriage to grow stronger as a result.  Learn how a fortuitous encounter at a gas station would change the trajectory of his career and his life.  He had a few lucky breaks along the way but everyone does. It's what do you do with those lucky breaks that's so critical to success.   Learn how he became known as the dumpster-diving, reclaimed wood-loving carpenter.  “Looking at a pile of wood on my shop floor might be one of my favorite things to do. What might appear to be a mess is really a beautiful creation just waiting to be put together.”  “What I am is a journeyman. A dreamer. A kid who once sat at the base of a tree and imagined what was possible. A guy who now stands at the foot of the mountain trying to claw my way to the top, knowing there's another peak right around the corner.”
