As a founder and the CEO of Vari, Jason McCann's mission is to help companies create environments that elevate people. Jason co-founded VariDesk in 2013, and the brand quickly became synonymous with sit-stand desks. Today, the company name is Vari, and it has grown into a workspace innovation company that provides everything high-growth businesses need to unlock the potential of their workforce. Jason and his leadership have been widely celebrated over the years, including recently being named CEO of the year by CEO Magazine in 2021.Adam and Jason start the conversation by talking about the origins of VariDesk and the sit-stand desk. Jason developed the product with his co-founder, and they started by listing the desk in Sky Mall Magazine. It quickly became the #1 selling item in Sky Mall's history! After years of success with the original VariDesk, the company began to expand into other functional workspace products just for their own company. But when people visited their headquarters, most people said, “I want this!” Jason and his team realized it wasn't just the products, it was the culture that had been created. This prompted them to elevate their vision and push into creating workspaces of the future. Our bodies were designed to be active, and when we sit down, that's when our bodies go into recharge mode. Over the last 50-60 years, we made it so easy to sit down, and we removed all of the things that encourage movement. Jason believes that innovation happens when people get to interact and move. So Vari creates “moving workspaces” where walls and seating move, transforming static offices into living, breathing spaces. When people shifted to working at home when COVID first hit, people were sitting on futons hunched over a laptop. Chiropractors have had record years due to tech neck! So, through COVID, Jason's focus has been: How do we create healthy, productive workspaces so you can continue to thrive and be at your very best when you need to be?Considered an essential business, Vari's team returned to their office in June 2020 due to the ability to have a moveable office that could be transformed into a safe working environment. Over the last 24 months, Vari has transformed over 2,000 offices across the country. When it comes to the future of work, Jason believes that flexibility is here to stay. We must continue to embrace change as leaders and adopt the mentality of “innovate or die." The ability to be flexible, moveable and innovative allowed the company to thrive throughout this season. The company was addressing a pain point. First was back pain, then it was how to buy office furniture. Vari wanted to simplify and sell furniture direct. Today, more than 4 million uses of Vari's products can be found in 120 countries around the world. And it's all happened by listening to the customer and doing what's right. Adam shared a study which found that customers are twice as likely to pay for something that stops pain than something that makes them feel good. The two round out the conversation by touching on the importance of leading with empathy, love and grace in this new season of business. Listening as a leader is more important than ever, and we have to put ourselves in our team's shoes. We have to understand what they're going through so we can serve them better. That's what we as leaders have been put on earth to do.Episode Links:https://www.vari.comOrder your copy of Start With A Win: Tools and Lessons to Create Personal and Business Success:https://www.startwithawin.com/bookConnect with Adam:https://www.startwithawin.com/https://www.facebook.com/REMAXAdamContoshttps://twitter.com/REMAXAdamContoshttps://www.instagram.com/REMAXadamcontos/ Leave us a voicemail:888-581-4430

This is Elliot lane helping you out with cannabis daily on some cannabis news stock insights moving into the weekend. One last day of trading before a few days off. Thanks as always to produce our Aaron Thomas will join us in a few minutes to chat through some cultural topics in the industry. And as always, thanks to Benzinga for giving us the platform super excited to be here with you today. Let's dive right in.There's some interesting and fun pieces of news to cover. So advanced fire. As well as your, a destined advanced flower capital is listed on the NASDAQ, a F C G V. Destined is private, but made up of industry leading investors and just, oh, geez. Love that blender that they're both REITs and the space provide $150 million credit facility to acreage.Yes, this will be to help streamline capital structure and execute refocused business plan. A hundred million is available for immediate use a hundred million available for me to use. So that's incredible to me. AFCG and Varidesk, and obviously throwing their hat in the ring with acreage who is of course.Forever and still has an open deal with canopy growth. So keep that in mind as well. Love this bit of news for three pretty amazing companies and strong companies in the industry. Obviously cannabis, CB WTF. They are a Canadian licensed producer, AKA. They touch the plant and grow it in Canada.Received four awards for its CPG brands at the second annual kind awards tied for the most of. These awards are published in kind magazine and recognize the best Canadian cannabis as determined by a panel of nearly 250 bud tenders across Canada. That's pretty telling to me, I don't really mention a lot of product and strains and things like that. But when it comes to people who know the quality of cannabis choosing. What is the best cannabis and it happens to be in an investible company. I want to bring that information to you. So Oxley, cannabis, CBD WTF, they have had a good last, I would say three plus months as an LP there aren't many of them, but I think they're one of them.Cresco labs, CRL, BF offers new classes to help people who want to get into the. Opening the Illinois cannabis education center. Pretty cool. They're a sin wellness aawh receives conditional approval from the New York cannabis control board for previously announced a definitive investment agreement with med men, M in F find the details of that investment agreement on benzinga.com/cannabis.This might be my favorite news of the day here. So I, I do want to set that up a little. The widely denied media reports on a German company being in talks with Afghanistan, for cannabis cultivation, turn out to be true. It's true. It's all true. The new regime looking to establish legal cannabis production for the export market C farm is the German company. It will invest $450 million. And setting up a hashish processing company in and for Afghanistan, cultivation, Afghanistan, of course. When you think of the conservative nature of the Taliban, you think of they do not like drugs. They don't like cannabis. They have inflicted a lot of punishment on people who have grown and sold cannabis in the past, but they utilized it during the occupation of the U S forces and allied forces. And during that time they saw the benefit. It can have economically, so they are actively pursuing it as a major way for, to bring in revenue to the country and to the regime. However, I do expect that this will reach some international headwinds. 'cause I can't imagine people are gonna want the Taliban to get rich.I'm interested in following this news down the line and I can't wait to get errands thoughts on that too. Verano VRN O F opens 41st dispensary in Florida unity road. Here's another cool one. I and L B for item 900. Unity road. Is there franchising and like McDonald's is a McDonald's franchise.Unity road is item nine labs, dispensary, franchise NGS, first agreement in South Dakota. They're now developing franchises in nine states. So that's big news. I think they are really the only company that is actively pursuing this. A franchising, a cannabis dispensary chain and unity road is that trade, as I said so props to Jeffrey and Andrew, the whole team over there at I N L.Tilt holdings. Commonwealth alternative care is to be the first recreational dispensary in Taunton, Massachusetts. I always like mentioning T L T F when I get the chance because I love Gary Santo. I think he has a really stayed ahead of the market when it comes to the past. We'll say 11 to 12 months. That's it for the stock news today. A lot of fun news for AFCG. For acreage for CB WTF and Oxley Cresco labs, making moves to help the industry CIN wellness and med men received conditional approval as well as Verano and you need to road and item nine labs and tilt all making waves on this fine Friday. So that's it for the stock side. Aaron Thomas, come over, come in hot man. And tell me what you think about Afghanistan growing. What's up. Everybody has a go in happy Fridays, zinger, nation Afghanistan grown weed. Let's see, I hope they got enough water. It seems like it's a very dry area, right? This could be look at the stocks for G RWG AgriFood. And once folks is available to invest in I maybe we'll get some definitive agreements go on for those three companies. Probably bring it back to stocks for you guys here. And drop us with some knowledge bonds, man, what you got? Yes. So the holiday season is right around the corner and a very Merry Christmas ahead as 70% of cannabis consumers plan to use more weed during the holiday season. The holiday season is a joyful time for many people. However, it can bring some unwelcome guests such as stress and depression, which often kick off a vicious cycle where stress is compensated by overeating and drinking resulting in weight gain and another inevitable round of stress. That's why roughly 70% of cannabis users say they plan on consuming more weed and less booze over the holidays reported by a CBD Oracle, a cannabis consumer research company, and a new.As the December holidays have traditionally been linked to increased drinking, it looks like cannabis is set to take over this Christmas. What do you think? I think. I have a lot of respect for those that would like to replace drinking with cannabis. Obviously cannabis is a much safer form of consumption regarding the body and physically of course don't drive and smoke. But in terms of what I'll be doing, to be honest I'm not gonna give up my bourbon. I'm a Kentucky, we drink bourbon. But I. Consumption can increase for both alcohol users and people who'd like to replace alcohol. So I think in terms of the messaging there I think alcohol users probably those that spoke cannabis and drink alcohol should also be an active part of this survey. But past that I'm not surprised everybody needs to chill out 2021. Following up 2020, it's been a long two years. Y'all you deserve to know. Exactly. And I honestly, I like this move, alcohol is people go crazy during the holidays and accidents and. Just like the most unfortunate situations are on the rise. And being able to have your wits about you at the end of the night, because cannabis doesn't make you completely impaired you can take it, you can take however much you need. And however much you feel will make you feel comfortable, but you definitely don't need. You don't ever consume enough to where you're making bad decisions or you're not able to operate heavy machinery, that kind of thing. So I definitely liked the consuming, tested good weed. The only issues I've ever heard of are those who are. And that, and I'm sorry for those people. Oh, Erin man, you and me?You're on the same page there, my friend, but what else what'd you got for us? Let's move along. So some big names, queen Latifa novice, Troy Carter, invest in cannabis store, taking owners from poverty to $450,000 in sales. So at the dispensary concept 64 and hope will open its second of 21 locations owned by social equity, cannabis licensees from south LA on December 20th.The wellness focus culture, rich cannabis store is named after proposition 64, which legalized cannabis in California and the hope for a more equitable. Why this matters. The ethos opened the door to diverse and exclusive collaborations that strive for authenticity inclusion, including Angela rye, queen Latifa talking terms, clever Lang it's purple and newly launched R N B w so explicitly. They explicitly developed to produce economic parody for people harmed by the war on drugs. Each business is projected to increase licensees income from 46,000. $46,000 under the poverty line in LA to $450,000 annually and create 30 to $40 or 30 to 40 jobs with benefits. That's incredible. That should be getting a lot more coverage. Cause this is the second time I'm hearing about it. But the first was in conversation with you for this podcast. A lot of focus has been on the legislative side. And on politicians looking for a win for a headline keeping safe, banking out not expunging, nonviolent cannabis, criminal records, like they should. But meanwhile, you have people like queen Latifa knots, and I'm sorry, there's one other there, but those three are actively changing people's lives. That's fantastic. All the props to them in the world and let's make sure we cover news like that more often. Absolutely. Anything that's focused on social equity and social justice, I'm all for we have a lot of celebrities hopping on this wagon right now, such as we have the Sarah Silverman and Seth Rogan and their initiative to get the.Was it the Senate to agree on the bill, on the reform. So definitely a lot of movement from a lot of big names. Yeah. And not a lot of people like celebrities getting involved with politics, but one thing they can do is advocate for the betterment of of society in ways like this, and also actively participate. So when they actively participate, their word means. So that is something to consider as well. But anyway, great storyline here. And thanks for bringing that out. Of course. And let's let's end it with a bit of political news a little bit. So the DEA backs, white house plan to streamline research on marijuana, psychedelics and other scheduled.Drugs. So the DEA and national Institute on drug abuse say they are in favor of white house proposal to streamline the process of researching schedule one drugs like marijuana and certain psychedelics. The agencies testified at a house energy and commerce subcommittee hearing on Thursday expressing support for the office of national drug control policy research plant The focus of the meeting was mostly on a controversial move to strictly classify fentanyl related substances. The Biden administration's proposal research components would also help address concerns within the scientific community about the difficulty of studying other schedule on drugs. It is critical fro a few quotes from that meeting. It is critical that the scientific and medical community schedule or study schedule one substances as some may turn out to have therapeutic value. It is absolutely baffling to me that these drugs are not already studied on an active basis. Like all the time. All the time, like where apple funding. How on earth are you going to solve a crisis that's been happening for decades in overdosing, in addiction? If you aren't studying the cause that's insanity to me and saying that honestly, like when you look at that the executive branch.Currently and their their mood towards schedule one drugs given his son and his son's addiction. I am not surprised that Biden's administration is making this move. I also is not surprising to me that Joe Biden is not quick to move on cannabis and because of that as well, but I am surprised that he's not moving faster on expunging Rex.But that aside this is it's shocking to me that this wasn't already happening, but I'm very glad it's starting to happen. Absolutely. So anyway, not to be melodramatic there, but I was a little bit surprised. No. The DEA said themselves in written testimony that expanding access to schedule and research as a critical part of the DA's mission to protect public safety and health.Like you said if we have all these overdoses, we have all these instances of bad experiences with drugs. Why aren't we doing the research beforehand? Why haven't we been doing that research beforehand? We've had all this where we could have had all this knowledge up until this point and prevented all this right.Good storyline. My friend, honestly it's something to consider. There's still a lot of work to do on multiple fronts when it comes to moving us forward in the cannabis industry, moving us forward in as a country. But. I'm glad for starting something now is all I can say. That's Friday, honestly, a lot of great news in the cannabis space this week, a lot of companies making moves stocks may be underperforming. They may be hit, but keep in mind. A lot of that is not the fault of the companies. It is. Do your research, do your due diligence. You Can Have Too Much of a Good Thing! https://youtu.be/jRnlQRtClME Boss: “What do you think?” Me: [going to the bathroom] Boss: “Can you hear me?” Me: [getting another beer] Boss: “I think he's on mute.” Me: [getting chips] Boss: “Hello?” Me: “Sorry I was on mute” @RodneyLacroix Do you feel exhausted after attending too many back-to-back virtual video meetings? Virtual meeting fatigue became big news as significant sectors of the population attended school and worked remotely during the CoVid pandemic. Dr. Mitchell, a neurologist at Sunnybrook, says, "We require additional effort and sustained attention during video meetings," "The added strain on our attentional systems and other cognitive processes can leave us feeling exhausted."  Imagine going to a three-day all-day conference. The sessions are all back-to-back, with no breaks, no time for personal interaction, no time to check your emails or call your spouse. Probably time to eat or go to the bathroom! That would be exhausting! Yes, there are some distinctive benefits to video calls as it's more personal and interactive, it: Facilitates conversation details when you see the person's face and body language. Improves conversation engagement as it's closer to the feeling of a real face-to-face meeting. Improves Team Building  But, there are also pitfalls to avoid - you can have too much of a good thing as well! Here are our top tips based that are experiential and research-based that provide relief and make video calls less exhausting. Pick a few that YOU resonate with and would be easy to implement. Experiment and try others over time.  Avoid multitasking. Research reveals doing multiple things at once cuts into performance. Swapping between tasks can undermine as much as 40 percent of your productivity. Researchers at Stanford found that people who multitask can't remember things as well as their more singularly focused peers. So on your next video conference call, close your other programs and tabs that will distract you. Yes, that includes your inbox and chat. Turn off your mobile phone. And be present, focused – and ultimately less exhausted. Take a break! Schedule frequent short breaks. Do something else; work on that other project; check your Email; take a walk. Make lunch, an espresso, or a smoothie. What you eat also impacts fatigue.  Schedule and protect breaks on your calendar. Control your calendar, don't let your calendar control you! Limit the meeting duration. There is a tendency to default to 60-minute meetings. Schedule more 30-minute appointments – better yet, make it a 25-minute session; now you have time to go to the bathroom! If it has to be 60 minutes, make it 50 or at most 55 minutes.   Stand up! In one 7-week study, participants who stood more often at their desks reported less fatigue and stress than those seated the entire day. Additionally, 87% of those standing reported increased vigor and energy throughout the day. If you don't have a stand-up desk, use a cardboard box. That's how the founder of VARIDESK® started! Additionally, if you're making a virtual presentation, you will have way more energy in a standing position than sitting down!  Make space for fun. Start personal. It's okay to come in a few minutes early. You would do that in a face-to-face meeting. Connect personally with others and make the conversation fun. As others join, we are talking at a personal level first – just like you would as you enter a real conference room. I change my virtual backdrop every week, which makes for a fun conversation starter – it might be from a vacation trip or an amusing crazy background that invites a fun initial conversation. Mix it up. Switch to phone meetings over video conference sometimes, especially if it's 1:1 with someone familiar. It's 4.30 PM; you're video-called out but have a scheduled one-on-one. Suggest this, "I'd cherish a break from video calls.

About this episode Startup Story LIVE was a livestream event, and it wrapped, and it was a fantastic success. This week on the podcast, I am providing a recap of the event. Initially, the event was supposed to be an in-person conference in Dallas. And then, COVID-19 happened. We had to pivot to that event entirely into an online virtual summit. The event surpassed my wildest dreams and expectations. During the two-day virtual summit, entrepreneurs and founders showed up to speak, listen, and learn from each other. Entrepreneurs support entrepreneurs, and Startup Story Live was an accurate representation of that. Today, I will share the highlights, some of the challenges I had to overcome to hold the event, and lessons learned along the way. In this episode, you'll hear Some of the interesting statistics and results of Startup Story Live: like we streamed to 77 different countries and how Entrepreneur Magazine came on as the presenting sponsor The tactics and strategies shared during the event by speakers, entrepreneurs, and founders. Sean Cannell of Think Media shared about the power of video content in today's marketplace and how YouTube is the 2nd most used search engine on the planet. Christina Stembel's session spoke to the power of quick decisions and avoiding paralysis by analysis. Why you don't need VC funding to build a business…you require grit, resilience, and an ability to execute well. Jason McCann of Vari (formerly, VariDesk) talked about how critical it is for brands and entrepreneurs to be innovating and not resting on the various levels of success they achieve. Luke Fox spoke about the power of traction and gaining micro-wins. If you missed the livestream event, I share how you can still access all of the founder sessions. About this episode This is a very unique episode of The Startup Story because this week I am sharing my story. Listeners reach out to me often, wanting to know more about my story and why I am passionate about what I am doing with this podcast. The hard part for me has been finding the right person to interview me. One of the aspects of The Startup Story that I love so much is the conversational side of the show. I soon realized the perfect interviewer was right in front of me. This week, my wife, Melissa McKinney, helps me unpack my entrepreneurial journey for you. Allow me to introduce myself, I'm James McKinney, Creator and Host of The Startup Story podcast. With over 30,000 listeners, The Startup Story has unpacked the entrepreneurial journey of some of the most amazing people, including founders like Jason McCann from Varidesk, Larry Namer from E! Entertainment Television, and Clint Harp from HGTV and Harp Design Co. Throughout our 49 episodes you have heard me relate to founders that have overcome challenges and obstacles. You've heard me ask questions about how their marriages were impacted throughout their journey. Those questions are not arbitrary. The reason I asked them was because of my own journey. It's that relatability to the founder that makes the stories so compelling and why you keep coming back. So, just as we've done for the last 49 episodes we have to start each story at the very beginning. My beginning was far from normal. This is my Startup Story. In this episode, you'll hear About my early childhood, being a child of divorce and how it affected me How as a child, I watched my dad grow his side hustle into a multimillion-dollar enterprise Some of my early side hustles, dating all the way back to elementary school How in high school I created one of the first direct to consumer CD distribution businesses and the important (hard) life lessons I learned from the experience About being kicked out at the age of 16, living on my own, and how my dad delivered discipline in an intentional way How learning lessons of hard work and determination affected me as I continued to grow My focus and what I wanted to do with my life and how and why I joined the Marines What my life was like after the military, including going to Jr. College and starting a bookkeeping services business Why passion is so important in every person's journey About building and growing a promotional product business and recollecting on the day I lost it all If you are a married entrepreneur then you need to understand that this journey is not just yours What I did after ending the promotional product business, including working at Disney and looking to provide a stable life for my family How working at Disney led me to believe in myself and owning the title of entrepreneur I answer the question, “Do you believe that entrepreneurs are born or do you believe that they're made?” “There is a ton of value in the lessons learned when you endure the fire.” —James McKinney Resources from this episode Article $50 offer: https://www.article.com/startupstory James McKinney on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamesmckinney1/ The Startup Story on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thestartupstory/ Share the Podcast The Startup Story community has been so incredible sharing our podcast with others, and we thank you! What Can a Standing Desk Do for You?

I’m going to stray a little from real estate today to talk about one of my favorite things in the workplace: standing desks.  How many of you use a standing desk on a daily or weekly basis? I’ve been using one for about eight years now and I absolutely love it. It’s a habit at this point and something I don’t talk about as much as I used to. But let’s take a minute to to discuss a few of the benefits. You can increase your energy level, burn more calories, and even reduce soreness after your morning exercise routine. Not to mention a marked difference in your posture (if your conscious about it). I’ve seen some anti-standing desk studies and here are my thoughts on that: If you stand in the same exact spot for three hours straight, obviously that’s not good for you. You need to move around throughout the day. Put a pull-up bar, a balance board, or some kettle-bells in your office. Take a seat when you’re tired. Just don’t be stationary all day long! “You’ll have better posture and burn more calories.” If you’re considering a standing desk, here are a few brands you should take a look at: Geekdesk. It’s a little pricey, but it’s motorized, it works great, and I’ve had one since 2012. Varidesk. You can use one of these to raise and lower your existing desk.  I hope this has been helpful to you. If you have any questions for me about standing desks or about real estate in general, don’t hesitate to give me a call or send me an email. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Charlevoix Marathon Race Recap + How to Keep Pushing in a Marathon

Marathon Training Academy

The first main stop on our 2019 camping trip out West (which Trevor is calling our Ultramarathon Sufferfest Extravaganza) was the beautiful Charlevoix Marathon along the shores of Lake Michigan. This was my 58th marathon, 45th state, and 4th fastest marathon. The day went better than I expected and I managed to squeak out a BQ and get 1st place in my age group. Let me tell you all about it . . . Race Recap: The Charlevoix Marathon The 13th annual Charlevoix Marathon was held on Saturday, June 22nd, 2019. They also hosted a half marathon, 10k and 5k the same day.Pre-race: Packet pick up was available on Friday afternoon and early race morning. The packet pick up and race finishing area was held at Bridge Park in historic downtown Charlevoix, adjacent to the famous draw bridge. Traffic into downtown Charlevoix was very slow but once we got there getting my bib, shirt, and reusable race bag was very easy. Angie and Trev in Charlavoix After scoping out the race area and getting my bib we strolled around the beautiful lakefront and then headed to our campsite which was located about 15 miles away. I spent the rest of the day taking it easy and getting my race kit put together.Race Morning: Since the marathon start time was at 6:30am (and I like to be early) we decided that I would drive myself to the race. So, if you’re envisioning Trevor and the kids out on the course cheering me on or waiting at the finish line that didn’t happen. Look at this tiny race bib! There was plenty of free downtown parking on race morning. I got there around 45 minutes before the race started and had my choice of spots. There was also plenty of time to use the port-a-pots and head over to the start area. A listener named Mike who was there for the half marathon found me and we had a nice chat and got a picture. I also saw MTA member Heidi at the start. She and her sister were doing the 10k which started at 7:15 a.m. The race had a good announcer and sound system and they solicited a volunteer from the crowd to sing the National Anthem (since their scheduled person called in sick). The weather was clear and mid-50’s at the start and the early morning light was beautiful. I lined up just behind the 3:45 pace group and waited for the starting gun. I felt excited to be there with just the right amount of pre-race anticipation. The Course: The start line is on Bridge Street just beyond the draw bridge which opens every 30 minutes. Lake Michigan was visible just to the left and Round Lake to the right. For the first three miles we went through some nice shady neighborhoods before winding out of town on a paved bike/walk path. The course is an out and back so that makes it more predictable than a point to point courses. You know anything that goes up on the way out will be down on the way back and vise versa. The course is mostly flat with a few rolling hills. There was one hill in the earlier miles that I briefly walked because I didn’t want to elevate my heart rate too much at that point. The course ventures around the local ski mountain Mount McSauba, down tree lined roads, along the lakeshore, and then the turn around point was at Little Traverse Bay. There were a couple miles of the course on a wooden bridge that was a nice change on the legs. I can see why Runner’s World Magazine named the Charlevoix Marathon as one of the best “small town marathons” in the United States. The course stayed nice and wide throughout and there was plenty of room to run. This felt like a big contrast from previously running the London Marathon where it was crowded the whole way. There were stretches that I wasn’t running around anyone but there were also plenty of sections where I leap frogged other runners who were around the same pace. The course is advertized as fast and flat (unless you’re from Florida says the race info). They also advertize a high rate of BQ’s on the course. In 2018 19.6% of marathoners BQ’d and this year 16.4% BQ’d. Aid Stations: There weren’t many spectators out on the course so it was nice to see the friendly people at the aid stations. The aid stations were located approximately every 1.5 miles and had water and sports drink. A few locations also had extras like candy and there was even a bacon stop. Since the course was out and back the bacon stop was located at mile 3 and 23 and I didn’t feel like testing my body with it at that point. For my fueling I used Generation Ucan snack bars (one 30 minutes before) and ½ bar every 5 miles. I also took some electrolyte capsules. I was also drinking a cup of water at each aid station and dumping one on myself to stay cool in the later miles. Use the promo code “MTABQ” to save 15% off your order. Or if you’re new to UCAN, save 25% on your first order with code MTA25”.Finish Line: During the marathon my mantra was “keep pushing.” This kept me from getting comfortable at a pace and slacking off (and also helped keep my mindset strong). My legs felt strong although I did have some glute soreness which I took as a good sign that they were doing their job (and not giving me hamstring pain). I was happy to have a surge of energy to run the last mile with a 7:58 pace. I had a strong finishing kick the final 0.2 miles to cross the finish line in 3:39:25. This was my 58th marathon and 45th state and 4th fastest marathon (haven’t run faster for 5 years). My split for the first half was 1:48:40 and 2nd half split was 1:51:06. Overall, I was 88/364 and the 21/168 female. In addition to squeaking out a BQ (my qualifying time is 3:40). The finish line was located back in historic Charlevoix. There were a good number of spectators cheering runners to a strong finish. The men’s winner for the marathon was Leo Foley with a time of 2:42:46. The female marathon champion was Rachel Whipple with a time of 3:07:30. The half marathon male champion was Will Schrantz with a time of 1:13:44 The female half marathon winner was Shelby Kelsh with a time of 1:23:27. The marathon had a total of 364 finishers. The half marathon had 719 finishers. The 10k had 279 finishers. And the 5k had 359 finishers. The post race area was past the bridge in the downtown area where they’d hosted packet pickup. For food and drink options they had water, chocolate milk, licorice, fruit snacks, bananas, apples, chips, popcorn, pizza, and rice krispie bars. Runners reclined on the grass out in the sun to eat their food, wait for family members, and to participate in the post-race award ceremony.MTA Meet Up I drove back to our camper and was able to get a shower before we headed back to Charlevoix for the MTA meet up at The Villager Pub. It was awesome to get to meet Dan Beard from MI who ran the marathon, Heidi from MD (who was coming off an injury that prevented her from doing the marathon and walked the 10k) and her sister Wendy who walked her first 10k, and sisters Karen and Beth from MI who did the half marathon as part of their training for an upcoming marathon. MTA Meet Up After the race I met up with another MTA listener from the Traverse City area named Amy. She’d run and did great in the 5k and it was fun to talk with her. Since my phone died she graciously became my personal photographer. I went and checked my time and was shocked to see that I finished first in my AG (40-44). However I wasn’t able to stick around for the award ceremony because I needed to get back to Trevor and the boys. I also met up with listener Tina and her husband Mike (who was a great at cheering out on the course). Tina also finished 1st in her AG and BQ’d. with MTA listener TinaHow to Keep Pushing in a Marathon I mentioned that I started the marathon around the 3:45 pace group but quickly passed the group because there was too much talking and it was hard for me to focus. I guess I just wasn’t in the head space for being around a group the whole marathon (maybe because I’d basically had no privacy or alone time in the previous 5 days as we traveled with the camper). I put on an audiobook (which I find helps keep my mind engaged without the adrenaline spikes that music can provide) and listened to that until my phone died around mile 15. My strategy going into the race was to run as strong as possible and leave it all there. That was one reason why I kept a fairly aggressive pace in the beginning. I had just come off reading the book Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins and that really helped me be in a good place mentally. For those who aren’t familiar with him, he came from a very rough background of poverty and abuse and went on to become a Navy Seal and general bad ass. He’s a very extreme personality who is driven to find the limits physically and mentally (he also went through Army Ranger training, set the pull up record for 4,230 pull ups in 24 hours, has run the Badwater 135 numerous times, etc.) While I don’t endorse his way of training because he absolutely trashes his body, he shares a lot of great mindset strategies and tips. In fact he starts out the book with a solo mission that goes like this: “Situation: You are in danger of living a life so comfortable and soft that you will die without ever realizing your true potential. Mission: To unshackle your mind. Ditch the victim’s mentality forever. Own all aspects of your life completely. Build an unbreakable foundation. Execution: Read this cover to cover. Study the techniques within, accept all ten challenges. Repeat. Repetition will callous your mind. If you do your job to the best of your ability, this will hurt. This mission is not about making yourself feel better. This mission is about being better and having a greater impact on the world. Don’t stop when you are tired. Stop when you are done.” -David Goggins There’s a lot of language in the book but it’s also fascinating and a great way to dial in a stronger mental game. My Training “Please share your goals, pacing strategy, and any adjustments you made during the race.” -Peter My goal going into this marathon was to have a strong race and finish as sub-4 as possible. I had a lot of confidence coming off the London Marathon 7 weeks ago that I could at least do that time (3:59) or better. After London I took 2-3 weeks for easy running and didn’t do any runs over 90 minutes during that time. Then I had time to do a 17 mile (2:30) long run and 20 mile (3:05) long run before doing a 3 week taper before this marathon. Both long runs were run in fairly warm conditions on a hilly course and I averaged around a 9:35 pace. So this didn’t give me a lot of information on how my body would do on a flatter marathon course. I’d lost about 6 more pounds since the London Marathon so I knew this would also be a factor in my favor. Are you still using the Hanson’s Marathon Training Method? -Debbie When we did the episode about how we were training for the London Marathon I mentioned that I was loosely basing my training off the Hanson’s Training Method. So, I need to clarify that I never strictly followed this method. But I did take some features and incorporate them into my training. That would include running more days per week, going into my long run with my legs somewhat fatigued, and capping my longest run at 3 hours. Since the London Marathon I’ve been doing most of my shorter training runs on the treadmill because my allergies have been so bad. I also find that it’s easier to keep my pace slower for easy runs on the TM because there isn’t the variation in terrain. I’ve been keeping up my schedule of core and lower body strength training, getting regular massage, and getting lots of sleep. My Pacing Strategy I can’t say that I had much of a pacing strategy going in to the Charlevoix Marathon. I wanted to keep my effort level fairly steady in the first 20 miles so that it was challenging but not exhausting. From experience I know that I can usually muster a few strong finishing miles so I had the mental confidence going in that I can be strong after mile 20. One of my go-to mantras is “I’m stronger after mile 20.” I’ve also heard some coaches say that the first half of a marathon is through mile 20 and the second half is the final 10k. I started just behind the 3:45 pacing group thinking that it would be a nice stretch goal. However, like I mentioned, I decided early on to pass that group because it felt too wearing to listen to the constant chatter. I figured at some point that I might end up seeing them again. I tried to take advantage of certain features of the course like opening up my pace a bit on downhill sections. A couple times I glanced down to see my pace, saw it was pretty fast for the early miles, did a body scan (breathing, muscles, etc), and hoped I wouldn’t regret that pace later. I think every marathoner worries occasionally about a fast first half coming back to bite them. I’ve certainly blown up plenty of times later in a marathon. But I knew that my energy felt solid and the cool morning was working to my advantage so I wanted to capitalize on that as much as possible too. Mentally I tried to maintain a balance of being focused but not obsessing over the little things. It’s a temptation during a marathon to fall back to the pace of least resistance and I was determined to fight that. My mantra every time I felt any negativity or doubt creep in was “you’re okay, stay hard.” I also kept telling myself, “keep pushing.” I was able to reel in a couple runners who had gotten ahead of me during the race and that felt good. It’s okay to let a bit of competition creep in as long as you’re careful to keep the big picture in mind. Most of us aren’t racing for 1st place so it’s important to not let your ego get the better of you by racing people mid-race. Around mile 20 I was trying to do some calculations in my head and figured that if I could keep sub-9:00 miles to the finish I would finish around 3:40. But math is hard during a marathon so I didn’t obsess over my pace and just kept pushing. With 3 miles left I realized that I had a good chance of finishing sub 3:40 which would be a BQ if I kept up my pace. But I never allow myself to get overconfident until I’ve actually crossed the finish line. with MTA listener Mike At mile 24 MTA listener Mike unexpectedly showed up to run the last couple miles with me. One thought I had was “I can’t let him see me whimp out in the last couple of miles.” Despite pushing hard up a final hill I still had enough in me to have a good finishing kick for the last 0.2 miles. It was almost unbelievable to look down and see sub 3:40 on my watch. I got the biggest post-marathon high feeling so happy and grateful for such a strong marathon. When I got over to the timing table and saw my official time of 3:39:25 along with the news that I was first in my age group it was icing on the cake. In this episode we bring you a marathon success story with Academy member Jon Lepley who after a life-long struggle with addiction decided to run a marathon at the age of 40 and well . . . you will just have to hear what happened next! And in the quick tip segment, Angie will explain how to intelligently gauge your response to training so you know if what you’re doing is working. Marathon Success Story with Dr. Jon Lepley Jon Lepley is a long time listener to the podcast and Academy member from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He is the Medical Director at Eagleville Hospital -a large inpatient drug and alcohol treatment facility with a long legacy of treating underserved and stigmatized people. Before this he was the doctor at the Philadelphia Jail where he started an addiction treatment program that has now been studied by other correctional systems around the country. Last year alone he was able to treat 1200 people entering the Philadelphia jail addicted to heroin. This interview was inspired by an email that Jon sent us back in April. His story is a powerful illustration of how running can help turn one’s life around. Here is the email. Hi Trevor and Angie, I’ve been meaning to reach out for a few months now. I didn’t really make time to contribute to your episode 262 last year, and I just wanted to make sure you were aware of the role your podcast played in my life these past few years. I spent many years of my life addicted to various drugs and alcohol. There’s no real cause for that, it’s just how I’m put together. I had been able to achieve a lot of things despite these addictions…finishing college, getting in to medical school, becoming a doctor, getting married…or perhaps partly because of it. Most of these endeavors were largely undertaken in an attempt to “fix” myself. However, by age 30, my use of drugs and alcohol was simply not sustainable. I found myself in a ton of debt and out of work and in a psychiatric hospital…just lucky to be alive. I did receive addiction treatment at age 30, and a second chance at a career. I figured out how to go through life without using drugs and alcohol for the sake of retaining a medical license, but I definitely did not figure out how to be content in life. In the years that followed, I found myself on a downward spiral of different sorts. By age 37 I had totally lost my way and reached even lower depths without the aid of addictive substances. From a career standpoint, I decided to quit my job and work nearly 90 miles from my home as a doctor in the Philadelphia Jail system. Truth be told, I just wanted to hide from the world. A relatively massive big city jail system seemed like a good place to do that. It was in that bleak setting that I found your podcast. I just turned 40 years old and was working as a jail doctor 90 miles from my family. In some ways, I did thrive in that jail environment. I learned how to be a good doctor and how to genuinely care for people while setting healthy boundaries. But a familiar boredom was setting in and I aspired to nothing in particular. The idea of running a marathon at age 40 popped in to my head, and gave me a spark. I clung to that as something to give me purpose. From July until November of 2015, I probably listened to every one of your back podcasts as I joined MTA and committed to running a marathon. To this day, whenever I hear the opening of your podcast, it still reminds me of that time almost 4 years ago. So many mornings of getting up before dawn, and strapping lights on to my knuckles, and (no matter how tired I felt) running whatever number of miles were on the training plan that day. I can see now that I was on a path back then. I didn’t believe in God back then, but he definitely put me on that starting line of the marathon that day. To this day, after years of being involved in MTA and running many marathons and half marathons, I still have never run so many miles as I did in the 3 months preparing for that first marathon. These days, I seemingly am always injuring something anytime I exceed 20 miles per week. But not back then. Not before that first marathon. I ran hundreds of miles…hundreds of thousands of individual steps…without so much as a twisted ankle or pulled muscle in 2015. After all of those miles, the importance of that marathon seemed to dwarf everything else that was going on in my life. I was filled with fear and that fear functioned as a form of anesthesia on race day. I felt good for the first 10 miles and so I ran way too fast. By mile 13, fear was only taking me so far and I realized that I felt way more tired than I should feel for only being half way done. At mile 18, everything fell apart. I felt tired and defeated and certain that I could not finish. I still remember how badly I felt in that moment, knowing that I worked so hard and that I was about to fail anyway despite all of it. Not knowing how else to cope, I simply started to find reasons to be grateful. Everything about that day changed for me once I decided to just be grateful. I suddenly saw things as they really were. I could see how unimportant being able to run 26.2 miles on that particular day really was in the grand scheme of things. Truly important things in life came in to focus. I was able to see how far I had come as an athlete and a human being. I could see how much I loved my job at the jail, and that I was a father to an amazing daughter, and that people who cared about me would be waiting for me at the Finish Line. I found myself able to keep pushing forward, always finding some reason to be grateful as a way to cope with my fatigue and pain. I was a different person from the one who started when I crossed the Finish Line that day. It wasn’t sheer guts and determination that got me through those last 8 miles. For me, it was gratitude. Gratitude is definitely a theme in all of your podcasts and it’s surely no coincidence that it’s what got me to the finish line that day. The success in my career and my marriage that followed after that first marathon are also no coincidence. I learned so many things from that process that I couldn’t possibly fit it all in one email. I have since started one of the largest medication assisted treatment programs in the country at the Philadelphia jail. I was able to treat over 1,200 people entering the Philadelphia jail addicted to heroin last year alone. In January of this year, I left that job on good terms in order to take a job as Medical Director at Eagleville Hospital, which is a large inpatient drug and alcohol treatment facility with a long legacy of treating underserved and stigmatized people. Eagleville Hospital is much closer to my home and allows me to see my family every day (whether they like it or not). So thank you for coming in to my life with your podcast and with Marathon Training Academy. You truly helped me to change my life. In this podcast episode we bring you a special conversation with our nutrition coach, Natalie Mason, about how marathoners can lose weight and still maintain energy to do what they love. And in the quick tip segment I’ll share how you can incorporate lower body strength training into your routine and never skip leg day again!Weight Loss Tips for Marathoners Our Guest on This Episode Natalie Mason is a Managing Dietitian at MetPro -a company that provides concierge nutrition and fitness coaching. She has a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition & Food Science and Masters of Science in Nutrition Sciences. She’s a Registered Dietitian and Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics. In this conversation will you hear why marathon training doesn’t automatically lead to weight loss, the most common mistakes runners make with their diet, how the principle of “contrast” through “up adjusting” and “down adjusting” leads to metabolic proficiency, and the shocking number of runners who do zero strength training. How This Interview Came About In late 2015 I started inexplicably gaining weight despite keeping up my marathon training schedule (I ran 10 marathons and ultras that year) and eating as healthy as I knew how. The weight continued to pile on much to my chagrin. I finally realized that I was dealing with a hormonal imbalance -probably due to a combination of stress and other factors. I began working with a functional medicine doctor who put me on thyroid medicine for one year until my hormones balanced. Thankfully, I was able to go off all medications but the extra weight (about 35 pounds) did not budge. I encourage people to appreciate their bodies and keep pursuing their running goals no matter what they weigh. But as a runner the extra weight does impact your joints, energy levels, and can effect your marathon times. For me it was like carrying around an extra 35 pound weight on all of my runs and in daily life. I started working with Natalie from MetPro in November of 2018 and have lost 26 pounds at the time we recorded this podcast episode. I was initially skeptical at first but MetPro has been an amazing system for helping me reduce fat and keep my energy levels high for doing what I love . . . which is running marathons! And Natalie is a wonderful coach as you will hear in our interview. This podcast episode is our long-awaited race recap of the 2019 London Marathon. We’ll tell you all about our trip to the U.K. and what it was like to run this amazing race. This is a beast of an episode with lots of stories, tips, shenanagains and sound bites so kick back and enjoy! London Marathon Race Recap The 39th edition of the London Marathon was held on 28 April, 2019. This marathon has been continually operating since 1981 and this year there were a record of 42,906 starters (414,168 tried for a ballot place) and 42,549 finishers on The Mall. The marathon has raised 1.3 billion dollars for charity since it started. Their tag line this year was “thanks a billion.”(3) After several years of not getting in through the lottery system we were very excited to get charity spots with the UK based John Muir Trust and to raise money to plant trees on a property they manage in Scotland.Pre-Race: Trevor’s dad flew out from Washington state to watch the boys while we were gone and we’re so grateful to him. However, our trip got off to a slightly rough start when I came down with the flu 12 hours before our flight went out. Fortunately my stomach was fully recovered by two days before the marathon and sickness didn’t slow us down on our site seeing. Here are some of the things we did while in London … took a walking tour of London, toured Westminister Abbey, The Churchill War Rooms, The Tower of London, and The British Museum, and ate a lot of great meals. MTA Meet Up: We had our MTA meet up near the expo on Saturday for an afternoon British tea which consisted of tea, sandwiches, and a variety of deserts and scones. We had a great turnout and are so thankful to everyone who came out! The MTA podcast was dubbed “The People’s Podcast” by Phil Shin, one of the runners at the meet up. I think we’ll keep the nickname. MTA Meet Up With Academy member Niall from IrelandRace Morning The London Underground offers free transportation on race day when you show your bib, which is a very nice touch. One thing to be aware of is that not all underground locations are open on race day so you want to carefully plan how to get to your particular start line (for us it was in Greenwich Park). Riding the train to Greenwich Station on marathon morning It took us an hour and a half to get from our hotel to the start area via public transportation. There was also nearly a mile walk to get to the corral area. You also want to allow for time to get your drop bag to the appropriate location (they provide specific clear plastic drop bags), use the port-a-loos (long lines, bring your own toilet paper), and get into your assigned starting corral by the time limit (although some volunteers were letting people into their assigned corral after the deadline. The lines to the port-a-loos Race morning logistics can be a bit more challenging at large marathons, especially since at London there are three separate start areas. Another thing to remember is that depending which coral you are in it could be up to an hour or so after the official start before you cross the start line. This is important to consider when it comes to ditching throw away clothing and doing last minute nutrition/hydration.The Course The London Marathon is known as a flat and fast, point to point course. It has blue lines painted on the course which would be the exact marathon distance if you were able to follow it directly (the tangent). However the reality is that you’ll end up weaving around other runners and going further than 42.2 km/26.2 miles. The course was clearly marked with both kilometers and miles and there was a timing mat every 5k. Pace Teams: According to the website there were 65 pacers from the Runner’s World x New Balance Pace Team, ranging from 3:00 hour to 7:30 pace. Pacers were carrying large flags displaying their times and were available in each of the three starting areas. However, I noticed that the 4:00 pacer for the red start disappeared at mile 5. Trevor finished before the 4:30 pacer but his official time was 4:38. The first 3km of the marathon are spent heading east from Greenwich Park and this is a good time to go with the flow and watch your feet with the large pack of runners around you. It can be crowded for the first 5 or 6 miles since all three starts merge at the 5k mark. This is the section of the course with the most noticeable downhill so you might notice faster splits during this beginning section. At around the 10k mark the course goes by the Cutty Sark (a British clipper ship built in the late 1860’s) and this area has a ton of spectators (which narrows the course a bit). The Cutty SarkCrowd support is amazing through the whole marathon but it quiets down a bit until 20-22km where there are more crowds and where runners cross the Tower Bridge and hit the halfway mark. It was here that there was approximately a mile section where we could see faster runners who were at the 22 mile point. One thing that struck me is that most of them looked like they were in a lot of discomfort. Later on there’s the Isle of Dogs and Canary Wharf section of the course which is a bit quieter. The crowds pick up again around 35km at Shadwell and the final 5k passes some amazing landmarks including Big Ben and Buckingham Palace before turning into the finish line area at The Mall. Aid Stations: There were 19 aid stations on the route situated as follows: 13 had water in 250 ml bottles with a flip-top lid. They requested that you drain the bottles before discarding so that they could be recycled. Sports drink was available at 5 locations (2 with compostable cups) and at mile 23 they had the Ooho sachets which are 25 ml seaweed capsules filled with sports drink. They are edible and biodegradable, vegan and allergen free. You were supposed to consume them like a cherry tomato. I really enjoyed having the small bottles of water because I was able to hang onto it and consume water as needed. I didn’t use any of the sports drinks, gels, or other food on the course (there were lots of people handing out various items separate from the official aid stations). I brought UCAN bars with me and ate half a bar every 5 miles. Since the start time was later I was able to have a normal breakfast that morning and then just started on my fueling strategy during the race.Finish: The finish line area was exciting with enthusiastic crowds as you cross the final timing mats. They gave out a nice medal with several of London’s landmarks on one side and the course on the other, the finishers shirt, and a bag of food at the end (included in the bag was sports drink, a variety of different snack foods, and a heat sheet). Then there was the gear check pickup followed by the meet and greet area which had letters of the alphabet in order to meet friends/family. Another Ever Present, Chris Finill age 60, clocked a time of 2:59:46, breaking the three-hour barrier for the 38th time in 39 races. There will be 10 Ever Presents running London in 2020 as one didn’t finish this year. (7)Costumes The London Marathon is known for lots of costumes. On the way to the race we talked to a runner who was carrying an ostrich costume in a bag. I later saw him at the start line. Other costumes viewed along the way included rhinos, a two person dragon, a two person dog, trees, a sleeping bag, a tent, a flip flop, a running shoe, a Mrs. Doubtfire looking old lady, a banana, etc.. Ambulance Team Oh look the Queen! Rhino Vicky There were 38 official Guinness World Records set out of 78 attempts. The Guinness World Records has worked with the London Marathon for the last 12 years with on the finish line verification. This inspires some fun and creative costumes. We all know it’s challenging enough to run a marathon while not in costume so mad respect to anyone who attempts this. Lukas Bates dressed as Big Ben to run the marathon hoping to run the fastest time for the Guinness World Record dressed as a landmark. The video of him trying to cross the finish line in the costume went viral (if you haven’t seen it do yourself a favor, stop everything and go watch it now below). He was running for the UK Alzheimer’s Society and raised 5,000 pounds. View this post on Instagram This is not what you need after 26.2 miles… A post shared by BBC SPORT (@bbcsport) on Apr 28, 2019 at 7:16am PDT My Experiences Running for the John Muir TrustAs I mentioned earlier the week didn’t get off to the best start with my bout of stomach flu. Fortunately I was feeling normal by two days before the marathon but I didn’t run for five days pre-marathon. We ended up doing so much walking around London that I decided to give my body extra rest and call it good. I also tried hard to get as much sleep before the race as possible (which can sometimes be challenging in a different time zone). Race Day Nerves One of the things that I always get super nervous about (especially during large marathons) is logistics. It can be a challenge to know how much time to leave to get to the start area. By the time we had arrived at Greenwich Park and had walked to the bag drop area I had basically 20 minutes to get into my corral. The starting area atmosphere was exciting with lots of nervous chatter and the noise of announcers coming through the speakers. There was a screen close to the start line that was showing each wave start as well as drone footage panning the huge crowds. There were runners packed in as far as the eye could see in front and back. They released my wave and we officially crossed the start line to the cheers of crowds lining the starting area. It was exciting and a bit surreal to be running such an amazing marathon. And no matter how many marathons a person has done there’s always that looming question mark about how the race is going to go. Thankfully the weather was perfect for a marathon. Keep Calm and Carry On I found the first few miles to be pretty congested and had to stay mentally focused to keep on pace especially around the aid stations and anytime the road would narrow. There were spectators along nearly the whole route which always keeps me from zoning out. Despite the amount of runners on the course I posted fairly fast 5k and 10k splits which made me a little nervous. On one hand I was feeling mostly good, but I was afraid that I’d get handed a piano later in the race by going out too fast. The British expression, “Keep calm and carry on” came to mind. How Much Do You Want to Suffer? By the 10 mile mark my right hamstring was making a few protests and I started dealing with some negative thinking. The marathon gives you a lot of time to think! Here are some of the things going through my mind (among many): How will I ever keep up this pace? If I’m hurting now, it will probably only get worse. How hard do I want to work/suffer to go sub-4? I really had to work hard to bring my thoughts into a more positive space and enjoy the experience and scenery around me. Another interesting diversion was that there were a lot of costumes and the crowds were yelling the names of runners who had put their names on their shirts. There were also cheer sections for various charities stationed along the course and they made a lot of noise. I thought I kept hearing my name until I realized that there was an Andrew running around me. I realized that I was thankful that I didn’t have my name on my shirt because I find it distracting to get called out like that (but many people find it motivating so know what works for you).“I’m Stronger After Mile 20” The London course is nearly ideal since it’s fairly flat and the small hills were quickly followed by a downhill section which really made me feel like I’d achieved something. On the up-hills sections I reminded myself that I’d trained on much more challenging hills which felt like a mental boost. I started looking forward to getting past the 20 mile mark and decided that my mantra would be “I’m stronger after mile 20.” I knew that with my marathon experience I could more easily push through the challenges and pain than many newer marathoners out there. I also started paying more attention to my mile splits and realized that I needed to keep my pace sub-9:30 if I was going to finish in under four hours. Chanting my “I’m stronger” mantra under my breath I really did feel strong the last 10k. In fact, there were many runners who would abruptly start walking in the middle of the course which made those final miles feel a bit congested. I had to do a fair amount of weaving around people to stay on pace. 3:59:30 As happens during nearly every marathon sometimes the last few miles of a race can feel like a bit of a blur. I remember going through a couple tunnels, running down the Royal Mile, and hearing the announcer at the finish line and the cheering crowds. I had a good burst of final speed to cross the finish line in 3:59:30 which made me feel surprisingly emotional. I didn’t realize it would feel so good to meet my goal and finish my first sub-4 marathon in over three years. I felt so incredibly grateful for my strong, healthy body and the good training cycle I’d had. It was great to get that medal put around my neck and be able to finish my 57th marathon (and 4th World Marathon Major). Trevor also finished strong with a time of 4:38. 026: Tom Stewart and the Middle Market

This is Capitalism: CEO Stories

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 29, 2019 30:42

Tom Stewart is Executive Director for the National Center for the Middle Market, which is part of the Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University. It’s the leading source of information and research on the companies whose output accounts for one-third of the private sector in the U.S., the middle third of the U.S. Gross Domestic Product. These are firms that have grown out of being small businesses but with their revenues running between $10 million and $1 billion a year, they’re still a long way from being in the Fortune 500. And no one shines a brighter light on the middle market companies than the National Center’s Tom Stewart, “Mr. In-Between.”   Key Takeaways: [:20] Ray Hoffman introduces Tom Stewart. [1:15] Tom Stewart defines the middle market as companies with annual sales between $10 million and $1 billion. These range from the largest of small businesses to companies that start to resemble the Fortune 500. There are some interesting transitions along the way as companies grow. [2:21] The National Center for the Middle Market considers these companies in three different revenue groups: Between $10 and $50 million, between $50 and $100 million, and between $100 million and $1 billion. [2:41] Somewhere around $50 million in revenue, companies begin to need to create functions. They can no longer make do with the accountant at the accounting firm that they use; they need a Chief Financial Officer. They need a person to be in charge of HR. [3:16] At a little over $100 million in revenue, the functions get deeper with more expertise in HR beyond a couple of generalists doing payroll and job descriptions. The same goes for finance and other functions. Along the way, you are likely to get more P&Ls. You get functionalization and divisionalization. [4:06] They may begin to think about international expansion and what that means in terms of the skills and capabilities they will need to enter those markets. [4:20] Since the center started in 2011, they started with these three logical revenue differentiations. Over time, it has become evident that the differentiations roughly correspond to major inflection points in a business. [5:04] Within the group of roughly 200,000 middle market companies, only about 15% are public. 85% of middle-market companies are private. About a third of the 85% are family businesses; about a third have private equity investment; about a third are “other,” which may be sole proprietorships, partnerships, or closely-held corporations. [5:55] 65% of family business owners expect to pass the business to their children; only about 30% pass the business to their children. The next generation is down to about 12%. Family businesses often cease to be family businesses. They may get sold. [6:34] The median age of middle market companies is 31 years. There are transitions that occur as they grow and age. [7:03] During the financial crisis, middle market companies were much more likely to survive than small businesses. The vast majority of middle market businesses that survived actually added jobs while big companies were cutting. [7:30] 60% of net new job growth in the U.S. is in middle market companies. They are the forgotten middle child of job creation. It’s a mostly untold story of capitalist success because they are not found making moves in the stock market. [9:01] Most businesses die within six years of their founding. [9:30] Every three months, the center sends out a survey to middle-market companies in all industries, in all parts of the country. They get 1,000 responses. The questions are about top-line and bottom line, revenue growth, employment growth, investment plans, investment results, and biggest challenges. The center has eight years of data. [10:11] The center recently took data from five years (20,000 company surveys) and did a factor analysis and a Bayesian statistical analysis. They were able to identify the key factors that drive growth for these companies. They created a cluster analysis for types of growth coming from various factors. [10:54] The center created ‘portraits’ of the styles of growth of these successful middle market companies, based on the decisions the companies make or the paths they follow. [11:20] The beginning of the National Center for the Middle Market came from GE Capital coming out of the financial crisis with a lot of interest in the middle market. As there are only 500 Fortune 500 customers, many financial services companies wish to work with the potentially lucrative middle market. [11:44] GE Capital approached a number of business schools, including Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University to do a study of the middle market. Fisher replied, “We see you, and raise you. Anybody can do a study, but why don’t we actually create a research center so that there’s an ongoing stream of studies?” [12:08] GE sold off most of its Capital division, starting about four years ago. Now the center is sponsored by Cisco Systems, GrantThornton, and Chubb Insurance. The center works with outside organizations like Brookings. [12:27] Middle market companies have ‘big-company’ problems and ‘small-company’ resources. Finding the ‘stuff’ that really helps them address their challenges is one of the most important contributions the center makes. [12:48] Tom Stewart talks of his background working with large companies. When he moved to the National Center for the Middle Market, he discovered an extraordinary universe with some of the most interesting companies with interesting challenges. Middle market companies generally outperform S&P 500 companies by up to 2%. [15:00] Some companies move up in the middle market. Tom calls them the ‘graduating classes.’ [15:14] Tom Stewart and Ralph Greco reported on a study about if companies are keeping up with digitalization or falling behind. Getting up-to-speed is time-consuming. Tom shares the percentages of digital spending, past and predicted. There are four types of companies: strategic, advanced, defensive, and deniers. Strategic is best. [17:51] In the 4th Quarter of 2018, 71% of middle market companies were planning to invest, with a large percentage of investments going toward IT. Cybersecurity is the biggest technology priority for many of them. Companies that prioritize cybersecurity for customer data grow faster than those that do not. [20:08] People are now distinguishing between three things: digitization from legacy data on paper, digitalization of the whole business process, and digital transformation in which you think of the whole business as being digital, first. More companies are moving from one level to the next, connecting the dots to arrive at digital transformation. [21:48] As executive teams age, they sometimes may also be more interested in harvesting than in planting. That’s when private equity investors start coming in to grow them. [22:46] Middle market companies that are using technology as a cornerstone grew at an average 10% rate in 2018. The ‘laggards’ who haven’t connected the dots grew only at a 6% rate. As the years pass, growth rates and the advantages of the technology will compound for the forward companies. Tom gives examples of high-tech companies. [24:14] Tom reflects that before he started with the center he was unaware of the landscape of middle market companies that opened before him. He says policymakers don’t understand and are not being told the stories of middle market companies. [25:15] 47% of mid-size companies report that the lack of talent is restraining their growth. Google doesn’t have a shortage of job applicants. Everybody knows about Google. There are some extraordinary opportunities in mid-market companies and that story needs to be told so the talent can find the opportunities in these companies. [25:38] Varidesk furniture, every sports team, craft brewers, and more are all found in the middle market sector. [26:29] Tom looks forward to more interactions between companies to use tools, create knowledge, and share knowledge. The center can provide academic rigor but also an opportunity for people to share and talk. Tom wants to see more talking about the data while continuing to create a body of knowledge about middle market companies. [28:01] Tom wants to apply this body of knowledge to help these companies perform even better. Tom’s third hope is for more connections with policymakers, on one hand, and the global community of middle market companies, on the other hand. [28:57] The core work of prosperity in communities and cities is helping the companies that are already there to grow. Part of that is identifying the middle market companies. Public investment is needed there to help everybody living in those communities. [29:28] This is Capitalism, with “Mr. In-Between,” Tom Stewart.   Mentioned in This Episode: Stephens.com Thomas A. Inspiring Stories From This Year’s Boston Marathon

Marathon Training Academy

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 21, 2019 72:02

In this podcast episode we bring you inspiring stories from this year’s Boston Marathon. Plus we will give you a run-down of the final results and soundbites from race weekend. And in the quick tip segment, Angie answers a question about what officially counts as a marathon or half marathon. The Boston Marathon 2019 2019 was the 123rd edition of the Boston Marathon. There are around 500,000 spectators who come out every year to cheer on the 30,000 plus runners. This provides a nearly 200 million dollar boost to the local economy. The Boston Marathon is hosted by the Boston Athletic Association which was established in 1887. In 1897 the BAA hosted a 24.5-mile road race for 15 participants (only 10 finished). In 1924 the course was lengthened to 26 miles, 385 yards to conform to the new Olympic standard. The BAA’s symbol is the unicorn and it still appears on today’s marathon medals. Official Boston colors are yellow and blue. Around 9,700 volunteers work the Boston Marathon each year. Most of the race is run outside of Boston. The course starts in Hopkinton and goes through Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley, Newton, and Brookline before entering Boston at mile 24. The BAA reserves around 3,000 spots (of 30,000) for its charity runners. Participants who ran on behalf of more than 260 non-profit organizations raised $36.6 million for charity at the 2018 Boston Marathon and figures will probably be similar this year. Heartbreak Hill, one of the most iconic features of the course, comes between miles 20-21 after the Newton Hills. Although it’s only a 91 feet climb the name started after the 1936 race when runner Johnny Kelley patted fellow runner Tarzan Brown on the back as he passed him. This spurred Tarzan Brown into action and he went on to win the race (thereby “breaking” Kelley’s heart near that hill). Marathon Monday The marathon wasn’t always on a Monday. Up until 1969 the race was always on April 19th, Patriot’s Day, a civic holiday commemorating the battles of Lexington and Concord during the American Revolution. In 1969 officials changed the race to always be the third Monday in April which is known as Marathon Monday. Boston Strong The mantra “Boston Strong” came about after two bombs exploded at the finish line in 2013 which killed two people and injured 260 others. The city of Boston responded by more than a million spectators coming out to support the 2014 race in which Meb Keflezhighi wrote the names of the victims on his bib and went on to win the race. (2) Qualifying Times It continues to get more challenging to get into Boston with a qualifying time. A total of 30,458 applications were received for qualifiers, a significant increase from recent years. 7,384 qualifiers were unable to be accepted due to field size limitations. Qualifiers who were four minutes, 52 seconds (4:52) or faster than the qualifying time for their age group and gender were accepted into the 2019 race. Qualifying standards will be five minutes faster for all age groups, starting with the 2020 Boston Marathon.2019 Winners Men The men’s pack stayed together until around mile 21 when Geoffrey Kirui dropped the pace from 5:06 to 4:31 and the lead pack dropped down to five. Then there was an exciting sprint finish down the length of Boylston St. for the third closest men’s race ever. 1st- Lawrence Cherono (Kenya) in 2:07:57 (he said,” I was so focused because I’ve never won a major marathon”), 2nd- Lelisa Desisa (Ethiopia) in 2:07:59 (who said that this was the first time he’s ever been outsprinted), 3rd- Kenneth Kipkemoi (Kenya) 2:08:07. The first American was Scott Fauble in seventh with 2:09:09 and Jared Ward, who finished eighth in 2:09:25 with a PR. Women: Worknish Degefa of Ethiopia took the lead around mile 4 and would go on to expand this lead to 3 minutes by mile 18. 1st- Worknish Degefa winning time was 2:23:31 2nd- Edna Kiplagat of Kenya, 2:24:13. 3rd-American Jordan Hasay posted a time of 2:25:20. Des Linden the defending champion finished 5th in 2:27:00 Men’s wheelchair: 1st- Daniel Romanchuk (USA) 1:21:36 2nd- Masazumi Soejima (Japan) 1:24:30 3rd- Marcel Hug (Switzerland) 1:26:42 Women’s wheelchair: 1st- Manuela Schar (Switzerland) 1:34:19 2nd- Tatyana McFadden (USA) 1:42:35 (at one point she tipped over in her wheelchair) 3rd- Madison de Rozario (Australia) 1:41:36Notable and Inspiring Finishers Joan Benoit Samuelson Joan Samuelson, age 61, finished in 3:04. She made history 40 years ago with a 2:35:15 Boston finish, enough to win Boston and break the course record. This year, to celebrate the 40th anniversary, she planned to run within 40 minutes of her record-breaking time. She did better and finished within 30 minutes of that goal. Gene Dykes Glen Dykes, age 71, broke his own age-group record, posting the fastest course time for a 70-to-74-year-old with a time of 2:58:50. This is after some pretty huge races earlier in the year like the Arches Ultra 50 Miler in Moab in late January, and then the 200-mile Delirious Western Endurance Scenic Trail race in Australia three weeks later. That one took him 101 hours to complete, including five encounters with venomous snakes. “At one point, I spotted a Tiger snake below me when I was in mid-stride,” he recalls. “I had to twist my body and throw myself into the underbrush to avoid it. But these ultra distance adventure runs are great fun, especially when they include sleep deprivation. You get flashbacks afterwards—the good kind.” (3) Stephen VanGampleareThe non-elite man who finished 1st is a Colorado engineer named Stephen VanGampleare who ran a massive PR of 2:18:40, the 26th fastest time of the day. He was initially disappointed by the BAA’s change which started Wave 1 two minutes after the elite men. He not only finished as the top amateur in the race, he also qualified for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials in the process. Adrianne Haslet Adrianne Haslet is a survivor who lost her left leg in the 2013 Boston Marathon finish line bombings and had been training to run this year’s marathon. But she was struck by a car while in a crosswalk in January. Despite this tough new challenge she persevered in getting back to running, and ran the BAA 5K, her first race back. “I wanted to run this race so badly. I may have walked, but I never gave up.” (4) Ben Beach Ben Beach is one of the Boston Marathon Legacy runners and ran his first Boston Marathon at age 18 in 1968. He is now 69 and suffers from a rare neurological disorder that sends his lower leg extended sideways and nearly parallel to the ground with each stride. “I’ve made my peace with that. This is what running is like for me now.” His Boston personal best of 2:27:26 was set in 1981. He finished this year in just over 6 hours after dealing with cramping for more than half the race. “I feel good about the streak,” he said. “And I don’t want it to end. I’m struck by how adaptive human beings are. Runners know that the even slightest imbalance will almost guarantee an injury, but here I am, still bumbling along. The way my body has adjusted – it amazes me. I intend to be back in Hopkinton next April and to make up for this lackluster performance,” (5) Marko Cheseto Marko Cheseto is a double amputee who lost both his legs about six inches below the knee to frostbite in 2011. Originally from Kenya, he had come to study at the University of Alaska in Anchorage. In his senior year, deeply upset over the suicide of another UAA runner from Kenya, Cheseto overdosed on pills and disappeared into the woods around the UAA campus. He was the subject of a massive search and rescue operation. On the third day he stumbled into a hotel near the campus with his shoes frozen to his feet.  After his recovery Cheseto remained in Anchorage, graduated with a degree in nutrition, got married, had three children, and has become an American citizen. Eighteen months after losing his feet, he resumed running once he was fitted with a pair of running blades. “One thing I just told myself was the condition that I have is just a phenomenon that happened in my life,” Cheseto said on Marathon Monday. “It does not define who I am. I still have my inner power.” He finished in 2:42 with a new PR. His goal is to run a sub-2:10 marathon. (6) Michael Herndon Michael Herndon, age 31, a Marine veteran from Ohio was the picture of determination. His legs locked up near mile 22 forcing the Afghanistan veteran to eventually get down on his hands and knees to crawl. He refused to give up, drawing inspiration from three fellow comrades who didn’t survive a bombing attack overseas. Herndon’s fellow Marines Matthew Ballard and Mark Juarez and British journalist Rupert Hamer died in 2010 from an improvised explosive device’s blast in Afghanistan. When his Achilles tendon starting giving him trouble on Monday and his legs gave out near the end of the race, Herndon chanted his fallen comrades’ names aloud to help himself focus on finishing. Once Herndon crossed the finish line, he was lifted into a wheelchair to receive medical attention. This was his first marathon which he finished in 3:38 and he’s determined that it won’t be his last. He said this about his inspiration, “They are not here anymore. I am here, and I am able. I am lucky to still have all my limbs. I can still be active. I find fuel in the simple idea that I can run. Some cannot.” (8) Dave McGillivray Boston race director Dave McGillivray has the tradition that each year after he completes his duties he runs the race himself. He’s run the Boston Marathon for 46 consecutive years (16 years as a regular runner and 30 years after the race as the race director) and this year he brought it up to 47 times (he’s run 157 marathons in total). This year’s marathon came just six months after triple bypass surgery. “I would definitely put it up there as the toughest one and the most challenging,” McGillivray said. “But it probably was the most special, given that I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect.” The 64-year-old ran Boston this year for Team Big Heart and raised over $100,000 to create awareness about heart illness. “My mission now in life is to create an awareness that just because you’re fit, doesn’t mean you’re healthy, and that if you feel something, do something about it,” he said. “There were times in my life when I thought I was invincible, and I never thought they were warning pains. I just thought they were challenging pains. And now I realize there are warning pains out there, and you have to really recognize the difference and act on them. That’s what I did, and, as a result, I gave myself a second chance.”(9) Sources 1. www.boston.com/sports/boston-marathon/2017/04/14/why-a-world-record-set-in-the-boston-marathon-wouldnt-officially-count 2. www.mentalfloss.com/article/27483/11-fast-facts-about-boston-marathon 3. www.podiumrunner.com/gene-dykes-returns-to-the-marathon-distance-monday-in-boston_177008?fbclid=IwAR2Fw99Eid1w1cuxcqVY3-GTDYPHspaTso5nh2cZmEfXdVOcxRIsNMSgF54 4. www.runnersworld.com/news/g27054165/boston-marathon-celebrity-runners/ 5. www.bethesdamagazine.com/bethesda-beat/sports/bethesda-runner-extends-boston-marathon-streak/ 6. www.boston.com/sports/boston-marathon/2019/04/15/in-2011-marko-cheseto-lost-his-feet-to-frostbite-today-he-ran-the-boston-marathon-in-less-than-three-hours 7. www.runnersworld.com/news/a27045741/boston-marathon-results-mens-winner/?source=nl&utm_source=nl_rnw&utm_medium=email&date=041519&src=nl&utm_campaign=16093140&utm_term=AAA%20–%20High%20Minus%20Dormant%20and%2090%20Day%20Non%20Openers 8. www.boston.cbslocal.com/2019/04/15/boston-marathon-man-crawls-across-finish-line/?fbclid=IwAR1JJsU0pddsnpcOOvFxSnGpH546H59yyqBUKQWsqizmnae3hEJMzwGBdnI 9. www.boston.com/sports/boston-marathon/2019/04/16/after-heart-surgery-dave-mcgillivray-runs-2019-boston-marathon 10. www.marathonmaniacs.com/criteria-faq/ 11. www.100halfmarathonsclub.com/counting.html 12. www.baa.org/ Also Mentioned in This Episode Generation UCAN -the revolutionary new way for runners to fuel. Optimize Yourself
The Ultimate Guide to Building a Healthy Workstation (And Being Less Sedentary)...All For the Price of a Single Desk Chair

Optimize Yourself

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 27, 2018 30:44

Author’s note: This ‘Ultimate Guide’ is a collection of over a decade of research, experimentation, and many of my past articles on the topic of living a less sedentary lifestyle. This guide is also based on many conversations with the world’s foremost experts on proper ergonomics, the dangers of being sedentary, and the benefits of more consistent movement throughout the day. There’s A LOT of information in this guide to help you build a healthy workstation and move more during your day. If you’d prefer to have this guide as a PDF you can reference for later use, Click here to download this ‘Ultimate Guide’ as a PDF. Working a very sedentary career as a Hollywood film & tv editor, I have spent the last two decades figuring out how to stay active all day long despite living in front of a computer (in the dark) . Fifteen years ago when I traded in my super-fancy Herman Miller Aeron chair for a $20 exercise ball as my primary desk chair, people laughed at me. Ten years ago when I invested $3000 in a motorized height-adjustable workstation for my home office, people thought I was crazy. And five years ago when I moved in a desk treadmill, a doorway pull-up bar, and kettlebells to my office at Empire, people snickered thinking I had lost my mind. Luckily a lot has changed in the last five years. But a lot hasn’t changed as well. While it’s true that people are becoming much more conscious about the fact that sitting is slowly killing us, they are still often seeking the wrong solutions. The most common question I’m still asked to this day is: “I want to invest in the best ergonomic office chair on the market for the sake of my health. What should I buy?” This question is encouraging because it means people are (finally) recognizing that you can have a successful career because you invest in your health, not despite prioritizing your health ahead of your career. But it’s also frustrating because it’s completely the WRONG question to ask. If you do a search via Dr. Google for the “healthiest office chairs,” the #1 option (if budget is no object) is the Herman Miller ‘Embody’ Chair. And it costs just under $1500. Even more extreme, for those with ample funds to spend (who aren’t terrified of the film WALL-E becoming our reality), there is even a workstation that allows you to lie down while you work...if you’re willing to drop over $8500. Clearly if I spent over $3k on a motorized standing desk a decade ago I have no problem investing in technology that will make my work environment healthier and more ergonomically friendly. But the last thing I would ever spend a single dollar on is a chair that is so comfortable it encourages me to sit (or lie down) for hours on end without moving. Do not make the cardinal mistake of thinking that “ergonomic” and “healthy” are synonyms. An “ergonomically friendly” desk chair like the Herman Miller Embody Chair will absolutely reduce lower back pain and discomfort...but unless you’re moving throughout your day, it’s still slowly killing you. Here’s the hard truth: The probability is over 70%1 that you are sitting as you read this ultimate guide. You were probably sitting for the 60 minutes before reading this ultimate guide, and you will probably sit for the vast majority of your day after reading this ultimate guide. (Full disclaimer: I’m also sitting as I write this ultimate guide) We sit at the breakfast table. Then we sit in our cars (or buses...or trains) until we get to work. Avoiding the stairs, we then take the elevator until we land at our desk chairs. Then after between 6-12 hours of sitting at our desks, we then sit in our cars on the way back home. Exhausted from a “crazy day” we then sit at the table while eating dinner (yeah right...more like the couch). Then we decompress by binge-watching the latest and greatest Netflix drama until we collapse into bed (wishing we had stopped three episodes earlier). Rinse. Lather. Repeat for 30 years. Between sitting an average of 13 hours per day and sleeping an average of 8 hours per night (8 hours...yeah right): Americans are sedentary for an average of 21 hours per day2. There has to be a better way, right? Right????? Despite thinking that ‘The Perfect Chair’ will eliminate your discomfort, there’s nothing healthy about sitting in the proper ergonomic position for 12-16 hours a day. The best ergonomic position is always your next position. Josh Kerst, Ergonomist The key to building a healthier workstation is combining proper ergonomics with consistent movement. Only with the right equipment AND the right habits can you truly have a “Healthy Workstation.” The good news is you can redesign your entire work environment, your workstation, your chair, your habits, and the tools around you all for the price of a fancy office chair. And you don’t even have to do the research...because I’ve done it for you. What’s In This Ultimate Guide? If you’ve decided you are ready to make a substantial investment in upgrading your work environment for the sake of your health, your creativity, and your well-being, before buying “the perfect desk chair,” here is the ultimate guide to building a healthier, more active, and more ergonomically friendly workstation...all for the price of a fancy desk chair. This guide is working under the assumption your budget is $1500 (roughly the cost of the Herman Miller Embody Chair mentioned above). If your budget is substantially lower, I have broken this guide down to what I believe are the “Essentials,” and I have provided as many budget-friendly options as possible. Simply mix & match the many tools from this guide to fill your most pressing needs first, then over time slowly invest in more tools as you start building in the proper daily habits to use them. PART I: Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Movement* (But Were Afraid to Ask) Before diving right into all the cool tools I recommend for living a more active (and pain-free) life in front of your workstation, it would be irresponsible if I didn’t provide at least a brief overview that explains why being sedentary is so detrimental to your health, your creativity, and ultimately your lifespan. And conversely, it’s also vital to explain on a scientific level why movement throughout your workday is so important to optimize your creativity (not to mention your physical and mental health). And if you think you get a free pass because you already have a standing desk, or because you “hit the gym” once in a while or even regularly...keep reading. I. Why “Sedentary Is the New Smoking” (Not Sitting) If you have a working internet connection, you’ve most likely come across the headline ‘Sitting Is the New Smoking.’ This sensationalist phrase, as coined by Dr. James Levine, director of the Mayo Clinic at Arizona State University, is everywhere. Yes the statistics are downright terrifying. Chronic sitting and a lack of physical activity can lead to an increased risk of: Type 2 diabetes3 Cardiovascular disease4  Breast cancer5 and kidney disease in women6 Colon cancer in men7 Oh yeah….early death for people 35 yrs and older8 But like a frog slowly boiling in water, you don’t realize anything is wrong until it’s too late. According to Dr. Levine: Sitting is more dangerous than smoking, kills more people than HIV and is more treacherous than parachuting. We are sitting ourselves to death. What’s most alarming to me about all of these studies as they relate to those of us who work in creative fields is they warn people of the negative and deadly consequences of sitting up to 6-8 hours per day. Seriously? 6-8 hours? 6-8 hours is a half day for most creative professionals. It’s not like I’m going to write, “You should be moving more throughout the day,” and you’re going to say, “Wait, what? You mean I need to be more active? Huzzah!” But knowing that sitting is bad clearly isn’t enough to motivate people. The question is given the complete and total lack of free time in the constantly-moving busyness of the 21st century, what alternative do you have? According to the media and the multi-billion dollar fitness industry, you essentially have two options: Option #1: Do absolutely nothing, sit all day long, eat poorly, become fat, ugly, unattractive, and then die. Option #2: Exercise 6 days a week (everyone needs a “rest day” after all), eat an impeccable vegan/paleo/Mediterranean diet, and become one of those amazing “Before and After” pictures you see on late-nite infomercials. There is a giant chasm in between these two options that I like to call “Everybody else.” The problem is there’s nothing sexy about taking a flight of stairs instead of waiting for the elevator. You can’t make gazillions of dollars selling “moderate long-term lifestyle change.” Yet the vast majority of people fail to reach their exercise goals or complete their fitness programs because success is measured by long-term results, and results like losing 30 pounds don’t happen overnight. Here’s the secret nobody tells you: You don’t have to go to they gym every single day to be considered, “healthy,” but you do need to move more. That’s the brilliance of reframing your mindset from “I have to exercise,” to “I need to move more throughout my day.” Unlike “all or nothing” exercise programs, when you make the conscious choice to be more active, the benefits are profound and (almost) immediate. To be clear before moving forwards, I’m not saying you shouldn’t exercise. In fact, I highly recommend it if you have a pulse. But if you are working 14 hours a day and trying to raise a family, getting to the gym or doing a round of P90X every single day just isn’t a realistic expectation. There has to be a middle ground. Shockingly, our genes expect us to move 10-14 miles per day9. PER DAY. If you’re already counting your steps with a Fitbit or similar technology, you know that 10,000 is the magic number recommended by the American Heart Association10. That’s roughly 5 miles per day, less than half of the movement our bodies and minds expect, according to our genetic code. Here’s why this is terrifying if you rely on your creativity for a living - your brain functions very similar to a muscle. With lack of activity, your brain will atrophy. And conversely… The more you feed your brain, the more it will grow. The best way to feed your brain the fuel it needs to function at an optimal level (i.e. oxygen) is consistent movement. II. Why Movement Is So Important For Your Health & Creativity When you move, especially when you do quick bursts of high intensity exercise, even for as little as 60 seconds, your brain releases the neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. So every bout of activity is like taking a small dose of Prozac and Ritalin mixed together. Exercise has been proven beyond the shadow of a doubt to help people regulate their anxiety, depression, and their attention issues11. As someone who has suffered from adult ADD since college, I’ve been down the prescription drug road, and I took Adderall for a short time to manage my attention issues. Having also managed my depression, anxiety, and attention issues with exercise and activity, I can tell you firsthand that perpetual motion throughout the day is a much better long term solution for me. SIDE NOTE: Just to be clear, I am not giving medical advice of any kind, especially when it comes to taking medication or choosing to eliminate medications in exchange for increased activity. So please make sure to consult your physician first before changing how you manage your own medication. I am just sharing my personal story with you to give you some personal perspective. According to Dr. John Ratey, author of Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain: “A massive Dutch study of 19,288 twins and their families published in 2006 showed that exercisers are less anxious, less depressed, less neurotic, and also more socially outgoing. A Finnish study of 3,403 people in 1999 showed that those who exercise at least two to three times a week experience significantly less depression, anger, stress, and “cynical distrust” than those who exercise less or not at all.” Beyond the release of neurotransmitters, the other very important chemical that is released during movement and exercise is called BDNF, or brain-derived neurotrophic factor. The reason this is so important is because BDNF is considered “Miracle-Gro for the brain,” meaning the more of it that is released, the faster your new neural connections can grow, the better your memory becomes, the faster you can learn new information, and thus ultimately become smarter over time. “In a 2007 study of humans, German researchers found that people learn vocabulary words 20 percent faster following exercise than they did before exercise, and that the rate of learning correlated directly with levels of BDNF. Along with that, people with a gene variation that robs them of BDNF are more likely to have learning deficiencies. Without Miracle-Gro, the brain closes itself off to the world,” according to Ratey. Furthermore, in my podcast interview with Dr. John Ratey, he cites a study done in Sweden with 1.2 million boys, and they found a definitive connection between fitness and cognition. Even when they tested identical twins, they found that the less active of the two had lower cognitive scores. Beyond your creativity, perhaps your second most important professional investment (especially if you are a film editor like me) is your ability to retain information. If you have 40 hours of raw footage to review and then ultimately edit into a 42 minute episode of television, you better have systems in place to make sure you can retain as much of your raw footage as possible and synthesize your creative ideas into a finished product. According to Dr. Joan Vernikos, the former head of the life sciences division at NASA, as well as the author of Sitting Kills, Moving Heals: “When you are either sitting or lying down, your body is experiencing gravity in a very similar fashion as being weightless in space.” When the force of gravity is no longer present on the human body: Your muscles and your bones begin to atrophy Blood circulation is reduced to the brain and your brain is deprived of oxygen Triglycerides increase (fats in the blood) and you become insulin resistant (meaning that your body goes into a pre-diabetic state) Inflammation in the body increases Your metabolism slows to burning as little as 1 calorie per minute As depressing as this sounds, I only bring it up because if you move more throughout the day, the opposite of every single item listed above becomes true. Movement every 20-30 minutes, even as simple as just standing up and sitting right back down, interrupts the negative effects of sitting. So it’s not really so much about the fact that you’re sitting… “What’s important is how much time you are sitting without interruption.” Therefore the more you are able to move throughout the day and protect your brain, the better your ability to make creative decisions, the more money you are ultimately able to earn, and the better you can provide for your family. Time to get a standing desk and a gym membership, right? Not so fast. Learn more about the effects of gravity and living a sedentary lifestyle on your health in my podcast interview with NASA Scientist Dr. Joan Vernikos. III. Why Standing (and even Exercise) Isn’t Enough In my podcast interview with Ben Greenfield, one of the world’s foremost health & fitness experts, we discuss in detail what is happening to your body at the physiological level when you sit for long periods during the day and why sitting can lead to all of the aforementioned health risks. But more importantly we also discuss why there is nothing inherently wrong with sitting. Placing your body in a seated position is not doing any serious damage in and of itself, the serious damage comes when your body is chronically in the same position with little or no movement for 60-90 minutes or more at a time. The negative health consequences of being sedentary for more than 60-90 minutes apply to any position…including standing. (Click here to learn everything that science knows about standing desks) In short, if you are standing all day: You are going to burn more calories. You will most likely increase your HDL cholesterol (aka the ‘good’ cholesterol). You may lose a little weight. You’ll probably be in a better mood. And even cooler, standing has an anti-aging benefit12. And while there isn’t a ton of scientific research to back this up, I will argue that you are more creatively engaged and can maintain focus for longer periods of time. As Walter Murch said in our podcast together, being a film editor (like many other highly creative professions) is a combination of being a surgeon, an orchestra conductor, and a short order cook…all of whom stand while working. Don’t get me wrong, a standing workstation is a great start. But don’t pat yourself on the back thinking you’ve solved all of your health problems just because you’re standing all day. Unfortunately, standing for 12 hours in front of your workstation will only make you marginally healthier in the long run because you are still sedentary. In fact, some have even gone so far as to claim that standing desks are mostly bullshit. What I’ve found from years of personal experience is that if you stand to avoid the chronic pain associated with sitting, you are only shifting the pain to different places in the body, especially if you don’t know how to make the transition correctly. Ask any orthopedist or chiropractor (don’t worry, you don’t have to, I already have), they’ll tell you the standing desk movement hasn’t lessened their number of regular clients, it’s just changed the problems they have. So I guess that means finding more hours in the day to exercise, right? Here’s where it gets really frustrating. Even if you have miraculously found an extra hour before or after work to jog, bike, or even throw in some HIIT training, you still aren’t offsetting the negative effects of being sedentary for the vast majority of your day13. Don’t get me wrong, exercise is fantastic for you and you should be doing it, but you can’t use the excuse that it’s okay to sit for 12 hours because you exercised. According to biomechanist Katy Bowman, author of the fantastic book Move Your DNA, you may actually be increasing your risk for cardiac issues by sitting all day and then jamming in a workout at night. By sitting all day you are restricting blood flow and circulation through your blood vessels, and when you suddenly try to pump enormous amounts of blood through these vessels very quickly, it’s like trying to run water through a kinked hose. You may end up doing more harm than good. To put into perspective how difficult it is to use exercise to counteract the effects of sitting and/or being sedentary, recent research has shown that it requires at least an hour of intense exercise to offset the negative effects of sitting for 6-7 hours per day14. If you are regularly working a 12 hour shift like many creative professionals, you would need to exercise for almost 2 hours per day to reverse your risk of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. Do you have two hours per day to exercise on top of a 12 hour shift with no lunch break? Me neither. PART 2: The Gearhead’s Guide to the Best Equipment Available to Keep You Moving (And Alive) IV. The Essential ‘Must-Haves’ For Both Sitting & Standing Now that you have a clearer understanding of how being sedentary can damage your body, shorten your lifespan, and inhibit your creativity (not to mention your mental health), and now that it’s clear how beneficial moving more can be to your physical health, mental health, and optimizing your creativity, let’s dive deeper into the rabbit hole and take the first and most important steps to transforming your workstation so you can start moving more! As a film & television editor I don’t have a “full-time” job per se, I move from one project to the next every 5-7 months. Therefore I don’t have my own permanent office to call home. Furthermore, I know many people in my industry and similar creative industries who move around far more than I do, often times changing gigs practically on a weekly basis. Whether you have a permanent office, you move around a few times a year, or you change offices constantly, I have taken into account the varied lifestyles and work environments of creative professionals to provide what I consider the essential ‘must-have’ items I recommend every single person invest in if they want to live a more active lifestyle at the office. In short, if I were moving to a new office (even for one day), I would go crazy if I didn’t have these essential items with me. 1. A Height-Adjustable Desk Working at a seated desk is simply a deal-breaker for me. Not even a question. I just won’t do it. Knowing how detrimental it is to my health and creativity to be sedentary (especially if I’m also not getting any sunlight), I adamantly refuse to sit all day long. Therefore I ALWAYS work at a desk that gives me the option to both sit and stand throughout my day. Ten years ago it wasn’t possible to request a height-adjustable workstation, and if you did, people looked at you cross-eyed because they didn’t know it was even possible to stand at a desk. For those companies and rental houses who were aware that standing desks existed, they would instead play the “budget card” and tell you they couldn’t afford to provide one. Today practically every company has access to height-adjustable workstations at an affordable price, so my first suggestion is simply to ask. If you don’t have a permanent workstation and you move around every few months like me, request a height-adjustable workstation from the rental house equipping your office. They all have them. If you’re successful, your budget for the most important component of your healthy workstation is exactly $0. If you work from home, or if you’ve been told it’s not possible to provide you with a height-adjustable workstation, my #1 recommendation for a budget-friendly yet high quality motorized desk is the ‘SmartDesk2’ from Autonomous.ai (starting at $348 including shipping). -- More Affordable Standing Alternatives -- If a height-adjustable desk is not a possibility either because your company won’t provide you one, they won’t allow you to bring your own, you can’t afford one, or if there simply isn’t space, below are five different options for transforming your existing sitting workstation to standing, no matter your budget (or available space). The Varidesk The Varidesk is the most professional-looking, durable, and most permanent solution. But it’s also the most expensive. If you know you’ll never be provided with a height-adjustable workstation at your job, this is the best investment. If you’re looking for shorter term solutions that cost much less, see below. Milk crates Clearly these are not the best permanent solution, but as a short-term option milk crates are durable, modular, and most importantly...cheap. Bed risers If you’d prefer not to modify the top of your existing workstation and instead raise the whole surface higher, these inexpensive bed risers are the perfect solution. Adjustable laptop table (and paper reams) Another good short-term solution is using an adjustable laptop table to raise up your keyboard and then using paper reams (or cardboard boxes) to raise your monitors to eye-level. Not super pretty, but still a solution. If you want to make it look more professional, throw a little black duvetyne over the boxes and you’re client-ready. The $22 Standing Desk Ikea Hack For less than $25 (and a little elbow grease) you can build platforms for your monitors and your keyboard using a few simple tools from Ikea. Here’s the EXACT shopping list with Ikea part numbers and names (that I usually only provide to my Move Yourself program members). The ‘Spark’ from Ergodriven The ‘Spark’ is definitely not a permanent solution (nor is it terribly pretty), but man is it useful in a pinch. It’s simply a cardboard fold-up version of a Varidesk that folds to roughly the size of a laptop case. Below are some very creative options for converting your workstation from sitting to standing (special thanks to all of my friends who submitted these). It doesn’t have to be pretty...it just needs to get you moving. 2. The ‘SitTight’ Office Chair Despite being known as “The Standing Desk Guy,” I make it a point to change positions constantly throughout my workday, and I still sit at least 25% of the time. But when I sit, I still prefer to stay as active as possible which is why I have literally spent over a decade myself searching for ‘The perfect desk chair,’ and until recently I had to settle on a few different options (all of which I still recommend below). Then I discovered the SitTight (use the coupon code ‘OPTIMIZE’ for 10% OFF), and my world changed overnight. The SitTight turns sitting into an activity that can actually improve your health instead of damaging it. Because of its unique design (think of it like a really comfortable bar stool on top of an inverted Bosu Ball), the SitTight activates the postural muscles in your spine that atrophy when you sit all day long. The activation of these muscles over time can drastically decrease the chronic aches and pains you feel in your lower back. Furthermore, constantly balancing all day increases your heart rate, improves core strength, and most importantly increases your brain activity, ultimately boosting your focus. In short, the SitTight makes sitting at your desk a fun activity! Perhaps the greatest feature of all about the SitTight that makes it my #1 chair recommendation is its versatility. 1) You can sit on it similar to a regular chair: 2) You can also sit on it “Saddle style” if this is more comfortable for your lower back and hips: 3) You can also remove the seat from the base if you find the balance too difficult (or you just want a break): 4) And the coolest combination of all is the marriage of the SitTight base with the Topo Mini (more about the Topo below). This takes your standing workstation to a new level: Learn more about the many benefits of the SitTight in my podcast interview with SitTight creator Scott Bahneman. -- More Affordable Sitting Alternatives -- If the SitTight simply isn’t an option either for budgetary or health reasons, below I have provide my other top recommended “active sitting chairs”: The ‘Mogo’ The Mogo is great for leaning or “perching” so you can remove much of the pressure from your lower back. It’s like having a portable bike seat with you. It breaks down small enough to fit in a backpack so it’s great for traveling, and it’s also very affordable. But it isn’t comfortable enough to use for longer periods throughout the day. The ‘Pivot’ The Pivot is a significant upgrade from the Mogo. Like the Mogo it functions similar to having a portable bar stool that allows you to “perch” in front of your workstation and remove the pressure from your lower back, but the cool part about the Pivot is it allows you to spin, balance, and constantly move around. But it also gets uncomfortable after long periods during the day. A Kneeling Chair Until I discovered the SitTight I kept a kneeling chair by my side as a replacement for my desk chair. It’s super affordable, but more importantly it allows you to sit upright for longer periods of time because it’s so difficult to slouch while in a kneeling position. But the main drawback is the extra pressure it puts on your knees, hence why I don’t use it as often as I do my SitTight. Curious why I don’t list an exercise ball as an option? Because sitting on an exercise ball as a desk chair is actually worse for you than a regular desk chair15. Sure, it’s “supposed to” help you engage your core muscles more, but let’s get real. After 10 minutes we just end up slouching over 5 times more than we would with a regular desk chair. Expectation vs. Reality. You know you’re guilty of this too. My recommendation is NOT to introduce an exercise ball as your primary desk chair...but it doesn’t hurt to have one in your office to bounce or stretch on throughout the day. 3. A Topo Mat Hands down, the Topo Mat is the #1 product I recommend to every single person who asks me, “If you could only buy one thing for your office, what would it be?” There’s a reason the Topo Mat is listed as #2 on my list of top ten tools. The Topo Mat is not your boring, flat “antifatigue mat.” Those mats might make you marginally more comfortable by giving you a softer surface to stand on, but anyone who uses one regularly knows you often find yourself stuck in one position not moving...which means you’re still sedentary. In addition to being super cushy and comfortable like most other mats, The Topo Mat is specifically designed to not be flat which encourages more movement throughout the day at your standing workstation...and the best part is you move a lot more without ever having to consciously think about it (or set reminders that you’ll eventually ignore anyway). This increased movement promotes more blood circulation, less pain in the lower body, and ultimately more focus and creativity. If you’re standing at your desk, don’t do it without a Topo Mat. End of story. Learn more about how the Topo encourages movement throughout the day in my podcast interview with the Topo Mat creators. 4. An Apple Box As the companion to my Topo Mat, I never move into a new office without an apple box. If you spend the majority of your day standing instead of sitting, even with a Topo Mat encouraging more movement, you’ll still find that your lower back gets stiff, your calves get tight, and your feet get sore. Rather than spending tons of time & money chasing these symptoms with expensive massages, orthotics, or even making Advil a staple of your diet (all of which I’ve done in the past), the simplest solution is to put an apple box in front of your Topo Mat. Doing so allows you to relieve the pressure on your lower back and one leg at a time by simply shifting your weight and standing in what’s often known as “The Hero Pose.” The apple box can also be a great exercise tool for simple stair-steppers while reviewing material or reading, and it can even serve as a makeshift backless desk chair if you’re in a pinch. BUDGET UPDATE: Assuming you chose the most expensive options available above for both standing and sitting (i.e. the Autonomous height-adjustable workstation + the SitTight), and your original all-in chair budget was $1500, you’d still have roughly $400 available to surround yourself with a multitude of tools to keep your more active after also buying a Topo Mat and an apple box. So far we’ve barely scratched the surface. Let’s see how deep the rabbit hole really goes... V. Tools to Reduce Chronic Discomfort & Pain Now that I’ve covered my essential ‘Must-Haves’ for both standing and sitting throughout the day, I want to share the many tools I’ve discovered throughout the years to help me reduce (or outright eliminate) the many forms of discomfort and pain we all experience when working in front of computers for long hours. 1. The TheraGun Without question, the most powerful tool I’ve ever discovered to eliminate pain in my neck, shoulders, and lower back is the TheraGun. I cannot emphasize enough that this product is simply a GAME. CHANGER. If you’re balking at the price, take a minute to add up the chiropractor, physical therapy, and massage appointments you’ve scheduled throughout the years...then add up the additional cost to your health from living off Ibuprofen or pain killers. The investment in this product is worth it because there’s quite possibly nothing more detrimental to your focus and creativity than chronic pain. I originally discovered this product because I was searching for a way to reduce the pain I was experiencing from a heavy load of American Ninja Warrior training. But trust me when I say the TheraGun is not just for athletes. This is an incredibly simple-to-use tool that can sit right on desk next to your keyboard that virtually eliminates muscle knots in minutes. Foam rollers and la crosse balls (see below) are tools I’ve recommended and used for years to reduce knots and tightness in my neck, shoulders, and lower back throughout the day. But the Theragun eliminates the knots completely. In like 60 seconds. Seriously...I say this with zero hyperbole….the TheraGun is a miracle. Learn more about the TheraGun in my podcast interview with TheraGun inventor Dr. Jason Wersland. 2. A TriggerPoint Foam Roller An additional essential item I can’t live without in my office when it comes to mobility and pain relief is a TriggerPoint foam roller. Even if you invest in a TheraGun, a foam roller is a fantastic tool. But if you choose not to invest in a TheraGun, a foam roller is a must-have. Having a foam roller by my side (it can also easily be stored under a desk or table out of sight) allows me to roll out any area of my body from head-to-toe that might be chronically tight or sore from being sedentary (or if I’m sore from athletic training). A foam roller is great for taking quick stretch breaks, and if I’m spending long periods of time reviewing footage or watching cuts, I’ll spend upwards of an hour on my roller (I do the same watching TV at night to literally “unwind” before bed). Here’s an example from my Move Yourself Activity Video Vault of how to use a foam roller to loosen your “Glute Medius” (the outside of your hip/butt), a common area that gets tight when you sit all day long. Here’s a bonus example for using a foam roller to loosen your shoulders, specifically the area right behind your armpit called the ‘Teres’ muscle. Looking for a more advanced version of a foam roller? For true masochists like me, give the Rumble Roller a try. 3. Lacrosse Balls Once you’ve hit every spot you can with a foam roller, if you’re interested in getting into smaller, harder to reach areas that a blunt object like a foam roller can’t reach, you’ll then need at least one lacrosse ball. Think of a lacrosse ball like a masseuse's elbow. It’s not a terribly pleasant experience, but the relief you get is absolutely astounding (if you know the right places to put the ball). Here’s an example from my Move Yourself Activity Video Vault of how I use a lacrosse ball to the teres muscle to further reduce the discomfort in my lower back. Here’s an example from my Move Yourself Activity Video Vault of how I use a lacrosse ball to further reduce the discomfort in my lower back. And here’s another video for those of you who experience constant discomfort and pain in the forearms (e.g. carpal tunnel syndrome). 4. Tools Specifically For Wrist & Forearm Pain Repetitive stress injuries (RSI) and carpal tunnel are two of the most common types of pain people ask me about. When you spend all day long typing away at a keyboard, holding a pen, and/or clicking a mouse, you are putting a tremendous amount of strain on very specific muscles in your fingers, hands, wrists, and forearms. Think of it this way: Just imagine bending a clothes hanger back and forth over and over and over until it finally breaks....that’s repetitive stress. At one point in my career I had wrist pain so bad in my right hand (my mouse hand) that I couldn’t do a single push-up from the pain, and I was told my only option was surgery. I instead chose to do a little research and discovered a grip strength regimen had an equally high likelihood of long term success...but without surgery. While you are drastically overusing certain muscles and tendons day after day, you are also allowing equally important muscles to atrophy because you never use them at all. Often times the solution to eliminating pain the wrists and forearms is simply strengthening all of the muscles you are underusing. Here are the tools I keep right next to my keyboard and use every day to improve grip strength and lessen wrist & forearm pain: Captains of Crush Grip Strengtheners Captains of Crush Extensor Bands Finger extensor bands Gripmaster (for individual fingers) Variable Resistance Grip Strengthener Wrist & Forearm Blaster Needless to say at this point I’ve developed ninja-warrior-level grip strength, largely because I make it a habit to use these tools throughout my workday. Another item I travel with to every job that I can’t go a single day without is my Anker vertical mouse. Yes there are tons of different mouse options, Wacom and graphic tablets, trackballs, and entire gaming consoles that replace a mouse...but I’m a simpleton. I just want a device I can effortlessly hold in my hands so I can move my cursor around the screen...without causing shooting pain or numbness in my wrists and forearms. Once I made the simple transition from a regular mouse to a vertical mouse, virtually all of my discomfort and pain disappeared. To learn more about WHY working at a keyboard causes chronic pain and repetitive stress injuries, listen to my podcast interview with Dr. Sadie Sanders. 5. Tools For Lower Body, Leg, Ankle, & Foot Pain If you choose to stand for long periods throughout your workday (especially if you choose NOT to invest in a Topo Mat), you are going to experience lower body pain, specifically in your calves, shins, and feet. Here are a few of my favorite portable tools I keep handy for when I experience lower body & foot pain (especially plantar fasciitis which I battled for a couple years before discovering these options). Half foam roller Plantar Splints Frozen Foot Roller BUDGET UPDATE: With the exception of the TheraGun, every single tool I mention above costs $50 or less (most options are significantly less than $50 each). So if you spend $1100 on a height-adjustable workstation, a SitTight office chair, and a Topo Mat..then you choose 4 items from the list above...you’ll still have at least $200 remaining in your original $1500 “healthy chair budget.” Let’s see what other options there are to spend your remaining budget wisely. VI. Tools to Increase Strength (and Burn Calories!!!) Now that I’ve covered my essential ‘must-have’ tools for both sitting & standing as well as all the tools I use to eliminate chronic discomfort and pain, it’s time to start getting stronger right at your desk...and even start burning some calories! Yes...it’s possible to actually get stronger every single day and get in better shape, even if you spend your entire day stuck in front of a computer. Here’s how. 1. Doorway Pull-Up Bar A staple of my home office is a doorway pull-up bar with several variations of “Ninja holds” so I can continue to strengthen my grip (which as you read above helps reduce and eliminate RSI injuries and carpal tunnel). And if I’m lucky enough to work in an office space with normal doorway arches, I bring my pull-up bar to work as well. Even if you have no interest in hanging from ridiculous obstacles, a doorway pull-up bar is an inexpensive and easy-to-install piece of equipment that anyone can use throughout the day. Don’t get overwhelmed thinking you have to do maximum reps every single day, and don’t freak out if you can’t even do a single bodyweight pull-up. Simply put a chair under the bar and make it a rule that in order to walk through your office door you have to do one pull-up (with or without the chair). That’s it: One pull-up. Those tiny actions add up throughout the day. And I guarantee you’ll experience a lot less brain fog in the afternoons if you’re periodically doing bodyweight pull-ups. 2. Kettlebells Kettlebells are an absolutely staple in my office (I prefer the Onnit brand but you can get them at pretty much any store that carries exercise equipment). Occasionally lifting heavy things helps build strength, increase circulation, and most importantly keep away the dreaded afternoon brain fog. My go-to moves are kettlebell swings, goblet squats, deadlifts, shoulder presses, and I’m working right now on perfecting my Turkish getup. The best thing about kettlebells is they are easy to move from office to office (if you have light ones), and they’re super small so you can hide them under tables or under your desk. 3. Jump Rope A jump rope is a fantastic tool to keep at work in a drawer or under your desk to very quickly elevate your heart rate and respiration. That quick jolt of oxygen to the brain can quickly get the creative juices flowing again, and according to multiple experts can help reduce anxiety, depression, brain fog, and over time even make you smarter. And if you don’t have enough space for jumping with a real jump rope (or you don’t want the noise to disturb others), try a cordless jump rope instead. 4. Resistance Bands If giant heavy chunks of iron (i.e. kettlebells) aren’t your thing, there are several different varieties of resistance bands you can roll up in a desk drawer that can still give you a very efficient workout. This resistance band kit is one I’ve travelled with for years that allows me to do many types of exercises that I could do with a full set of dumbbells but without all the extra equipment. And the variety of colors give you a wide spectrum of resistance levels. If you’d prefer a smaller option for more therapeutic purposes instead of simulating dumbells, I also have a set of Therabands within arm’s reach. 5. Push-Up Stands If you’d like the option to practice handstands against the wall or take your push-up game to another level (or if regular push-ups are hard on your wrists), these Power Stands are the perfect piece of office equipment to stash under your desk. 6. Trampoline If you’re looking for a super quick way to elevate your heart rate, quickly shake up and clean out your lymphatic system, and give your creativity a boost, I highly recommend putting a trampoline somewhere in your workspace. Perhaps the best side effect of having a trampoline in your office is all the conversations it starts! Just beware of finding random people coming into your office and using it as soon as you step out (trust me...this happens to me all the time). BUDGET UPDATE: At this point if you’ve invested in a motorized desk from Autonomous, a SitTight, a Topo Mat/apple box combo, 4 items from section 2 (averaging at around $50 each), and then invested in another few items from section 3 at an additional $200 total, you’ve most likely hit your original “healthy chair” budget of $1500. But now you have at least ten different items for the price of one that promote more movement throughout your workday. Below I have provided bonus options for taking daily activity to the next level, but with the caveat these are an additional investment that exceeds your original $1500 budget of buying “the perfect chair.” 7. Under Desk Treadmill For several years while working on the shows Black Box and Empire I worked with a treadmill desk all day long, my favorite brand being the Lifespan Under Desk Treadmill. While it seems difficult to type and walk at the same time, I got the hang of it in mere minutes, and everyone that gave it a try was able to pick it up in less than five minutes as well. Having an under desk treadmill is a great way to burn calories continuously throughout the day and keep your metabolism elevated, as well as your heart rate. If you have trouble “getting in your steps” every day but really want to earn that 10k badge in the Fitbit app, a treadmill desk is your next best option. Note: The reason I no longer have a treadmill desk is not because they don’t work, it’s because I wanted to continue experimenting with multiple pieces of sitting & standing equipment...and it’s simply too difficult to move a treadmill back and forth all day long when you have five other pieces of equipment around you. 8. Under Desk Bicycle If you’re not a treadmill person, there is also the Lifespan Under Desk Bicycle which like the treadmill offers the option to move continuously throughout the day and burn far more calories than you would if sedentary. I’m not a big bicycle person so I haven’t tried one of these myself, but for those who enjoy bicycles I know this is a great option. 9. Under Desk Elliptical Trainer A third and equally good option for burning calories consistently at your desk is the In-Motion Elliptical Trainer. What I love about this option (besides the insanely reasonable price) is that it’s super small but packs a big punch. You can literally hide this right under your desk and nobody would ever notice. I often use the elliptical while either reading scripts, watching raw footage, or while writing. PART 3: It’s Not Just About the Tools...It’s About Using Them Consistently VII. How to Modify Your Daily Habits to Make Activity Effortless If you’ve stuck with me so far, you’ve exhausted (and perhaps even exceeded) your original “healthy chair” budget of $1500. But which would you rather have...ONE fancy office chair that reduces fatigue and discomfort...or TEN different pieces of equipment that keep you more active, make you stronger, more focused, creative, and all but eliminate your fatigue and discomfort? That’s what I thought. Now that you’ve surrounded yourself with the proper tools and educated yourself a bit about the benefits of moving more, it’s time to modify your behaviors throughout your workday to avoid being sedentary as much as possible...without requiring any additional time in your day. Here’s the great news about this section: Modifying your habits and behaviors is 100% FREE On a normal day I spend a minimum of 12 hours in front of a computer, on a busy day upwards of 16. Maybe it was 4 years of living & breathing Michael Westen while editing Burn Notice that inspired me to figure out a way to hack my surroundings and behaviors like a super spy, or perhaps it’s just sheer survival instincts given that I’m raising two small kids and trying to make a living in Los Angeles in one of the most competitive industries on the planet. No matter the initial inspiration, without much effort I’m now able to get between 10,000 and 15,000 steps on a normal workday. This is an example of a fairly normal day of activity for me while working (I generally average about 10k steps...so this was a good day). If you’re interested in building healthy habits to pair with all the new office equipment you’ve invested in to be more active, here are seven different options for modifying habits you’re already doing every day so you can be more active (without even thinking about it). 1. Introduce NEAT Movement Into Your Day NEAT is a term coined by James Levine, an exercise physiologist at the Mayo Clinic, and it stands for Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis. Defined in the simplest terms, NEAT movements are the small, brief, and frequent muscle movements one makes throughout the day. These frequent movements to incorporate into your daily routine can be as simple as: Standing up Sitting back down Bending over to pick something up Crossing your legs Shifting positions often Stretching periodically Think of yourself as the tortoise, not the hare. Sprinting quickly (i.e. exercising vigorously) and then sitting all day long isn’t as beneficial for you as slowly moving constantly throughout the day. In my podcast interview with Ergonomist Josh Kerst, he mentions the “10 and 2” rule, meaning every 10 minutes or so initiate a change in posture for 2 minutes, ideally standing as well (if you’re not already). In addition to having physical benefits, integrating more NEAT activity into your day will have a positive effect on your attention, focus, cognitive function, and creativity as well. Added time to your day: Approximately 0 minutes. 2. Organize Your Work Environment to Be LESS Efficient Given that I live and breath productivity, it may seem counterintuitive that I’m recommending you rearrange your office environment so it becomes less efficient, but there is nothing less efficient than being sedentary all day long. Movement is the secret to consistent levels of focus and productivity throughout the day. Forget feng shui…while you may be thinking you are saving time by having all of your essential tools within arm’s reach (e.g. your printer, stapler, file folders, trash can, etc), the lack of activity you get throughout the day by never moving actually makes you infinitely less productive. Simply assess your office layout and start rearranging frequently used items so they are out of reach. For example, my trash can is never under my desk within arm’s reach, it’s always in the exact opposite corner of the room. That way I’m forced to take 15-20 steps to throw something away (unless I want to shoot some “office hoops”). Now apply the same principle to frequently used items such as printers, pens, pencils, staplers, or bookshelves with binders. Make everything as inefficient as possible so you are forced to change positions to grab items throughout your day. This will introduce a significant amount of NEAT movement into your routine (for more on NEAT movement, scroll above to option #1). This one step alone could yield standing up 30-40 more times per day without you ever having to think about it. Added time to your day: Approximately 1-5 minutes. 3. Make Water Your Secret Weapon (And Turn Bathroom Breaks Into “Smoke Breaks”) The idea here is to use water as your ultimate weapon against being sedentary. There are two components to this strategy: Drink water like it’s going out of style Place your water just out of arm’s reach so you are forced to stand when you drink (an additional form of NEAT movement) By placing your water out of arm’s reach you are forced to stand every time you take a drink, and secondly if you drink like a fish you’ll have to pee like a racehorse. On that note...it’s been acceptable for decades to step outside several times a day and voluntarily commit suicide in the company’s back alley, now it’s time to take the same liberty with your bathroom breaks. But now instead of shortening your lifespan, you’ll be extending it! Since you’re now drinking copious amounts of water you’ll be taking bathroom breaks every couple of hours (probably more). Instead of running to the bathroom and returning as quickly as possible, use this time to focus on activity. Take the furthest path possible to reach the bathroom Find your secret place to do quick activity breaks When I was editing Empire I worked on the 4rd floor, but I would often walk down the steps to the main lobby to use the bathroom. I would then walk back up the steps, but before returning to work I would do 2-5 minutes of high intensity exercises in the stairwell. Those 2-5 minutes often bought me an additional 2-3 hours of high energy, focused creative work. Added time to your day: Approximately 1-5 minutes. 4. Park As Far Away As Possible (And then Ditch the Elevator and Take the Stairs Instead) Here is a parking lot outside one of the studios I’ve worked at in the past. Here’s where I could have parked: Here’s where I chose to park instead: Depending on how far away your parking space is from the office, you can add upwards of 1000+ steps just by making the conscious choice to park further away. And as an added bonus, your mornings will be LESS stressful because you no longer have to fight for the best space. The ‘best space’ for you will now be in the back corner on the roof of the parking structure...and there’s no need to fight for that one! Once you’ve chosen your optimal stop as far away as possible, choose to take the stairs to your office instead of the elevator. (If) Your legs work...Use them. Added time to your day: Approximately 5-10 minutes. 5. Make It a Rule to Walk If You’re On the Phone If I could choose only one strategy from this section that yields the most bang for your buck it would be this one. By simply making the conscious choice to take walks whenever you are on the phone, you could add upwards of 5-10k steps per day! For example, if I’m on a notes call or a conference call, I will choose a safe walking path where I don’t have to focus on traffic or my safety...all I have to do is walk around the block over and over and over. This helps me stay focused on the call, it gives me more energy which translates as being more passionate and attentive on the phone, and without thinking about it, at the end a 60 minute call I’ll be 7500 steps richer. If you get an impromptu phone call you weren’t expecting that will only last a few minutes, walk in circles in your office. Added time to your day: Approximately 0 minutes. (you’d be on the phone anyway) 6. Talk to Colleagues In Person (Ditch IM, Texts, and Office Phones) I have simply made it a rule that I don’t use the phone for communicating at the office. If I can walk to someone’s office, I don’t use the phone. Ever. I set the tone on my first day of a new job and let my colleagues know if they want to communicate with me they can send an e-mail, an instant message, or knock on my door. To be clear, I don’t tell everyone I’m working with they MUST communicate with me in person, but my general rule is that if I want to communicate with someone else, I make the effort to seek them out in person. When it comes to super simple requests that can be answered in a single sentence, I’m not going to interrupt my colleague’s or assistant’s creative flow by knocking on their door, I will just send a quick Slack message. But in general if the answer I’m requesting requires more than a simple answer, and moreover if communicating for 3 minutes in person avoids an email or IM chain with 20 different responses, I always make it a point to reach out in person. Trust me. If you want to build deeper meaningful relationships with your colleagues, try connecting like a real human being. The side effect is getting more steps into your day! Added time to your day: Approximately 1-5 minutes. 7. Take A Minimum of One Walking Break Per Day I have made it a regular habit to take a 15-30 minute walk shortly after I wake up in the morning to get some sun and wake myself up. This helps reset your circadian rhythm (which pays off by helping you wind down at the end of the day and sleep better). Then in the afternoons when I feel my energy slumping and my creative juices hitting a wall, I’ll also habitually take a walk around 4pm every afternoon (when I’m not in the room with a client). As mentioned in Section 1, movement activates the thinking brain, and there’s no better way to clear your head and solve creative problems than taking a walk. In fact according to research done at Stanford, simply walking versus sitting can boost creativity by upwards of 60%16. The next time you feel guilty (or downright afraid) of taking a walking break, keep in mind that you’re still working. Which do you think is more efficient, trying to solve a problem by endlessly staring at a screen while sitting on your ass, or forcing yourself into a different environment and moving around so your brain can breath? Think of it this way...where have you had more brilliant epiphanies in your life...in front of a computer, or in the shower? Yup. That’s what I thought. Added time to your day: Approximately 15-30 minutes. To Sit Or Not To Sit...That Is the Question Phew! That’s A LOT of information. Bet you didn’t know you had so many options available to you for being more active in an otherwise sedentary work environment, did you? That’s okay, I had no idea any of this stuff existed until I started obsessively researching and experimenting with everything I could get my hands on. Today, without even thinking about it, I average 10k+ steps per day (not including exercise or ninja training), I’m constantly taking breaks but still meeting my deadlines, I’m able to maintain my focus for longer periods (which gets me home to my kids sooner), and I just feel better. If you’re interested in taking “the red pill” and seeing just how deep this rabbit hole really goes, I invite you to join my ‘Move Yourself’ program to bring together all of the knowledge and expertise I’ve shared with you in this ultimate guide (plus a ton more) into a simple and repeatable daily system that will lead to: More consistent energy throughout your (long) day A heightened ability to enter a state of “creative flow” Increasing your metabolism Burning more calories Having less brain fog More bursts of creativity Arriving home at night to your family with energy to spare I look forward to seeing you inside! Do you own a standing desk? Do you know someone that does? With each passing day, the number of people who answer “no” to those two questions diminishes. And a big reason why is our guest on Episode 10.

David Patton is the Director of Design at VARIDESK, the company that is leading the sit-stand revolution at workplaces around the world.  An industrial designer by education, David shares the VARIDESK story rooted in pain (literally, as in the back of his CEO) and how his original design, built in his garage (again, literally), helped launch a new company and further speed the revolution of health and wellness in office settings everywhere.

It's a great story and one we should all keep in mind—sometimes the biggest successes in life come from designing a solution for a single person's problem. I hope you enjoy my conversation with the funny and insightful David Patton of VARIDESK.

Mr. Money Mustache (@mrmoneymustache -- Pete Adeney in real life) grew up in Canada in a family of mostly eccentric musicians. He worked in various tech companies before retiring at age 30. Pete, his wife, and their now eleven-year-old son live near Boulder, Colorado, and have not had real jobs since 2005. This begs the question of "How?" In essence, they accomplished this early retirement by optimizing all aspects of their lifestyle for maximal fun at minimal expense, and by using basic index-fund investing. Their average annual expenses total a mere $25-27,000, and they do not feel in want of anything. Since 2005, all three of them have explored a free-form life of interesting projects, side-businesses, and adventures. In 2011, Pete started writing the Mr. Money Mustache blog about his philosophy, which has grown to reach about 23 million different people (and 300 million page views) since its founding. It has become a worldwide cult phenomenon, with a self-organizing community and incredible news coverage. This episode explores his story, philosophies, and routines. Hey hey! Welcome to episode 154 of Life on Fire. Our most valuable and precious commodity is time, it’s something we can never buy back or replace. So how can we make leverage our time to crush it in our businesses - and enjoy our lives in the process? That’s what we’ll be talking about on today’s show. Specifically we’ll cover my top productivity tips that will help you no matter what industry you’re in or where you’re at with your business. And you’ll also hear a live hot seat session with two of my elite Firestarter clients. Productivity is an area we can all improve in. As I’ve grown Life on Fire I’ve learned a lot of helpful tips and suggestions to make the most of the time I invest in my business. I’ve got 12 tips for you - directly from my own experience!  In this episode you’ll hear: What part of the day is most critical to success? (8:20) Are you creating profits or just busy work? How to know the difference. (16:20) The importance of deadlines. (19:30) Why what you eat plays a role in your success. (31:20) How to handle the challenges of being an entrepreneur. (39:30) And so much more! 1.) My first tip for more productivity is to create a morning routine. How you start your day is up to you, you CAN choose to be a morning person! The key is to make it fun and you’ll want to get up and get going. Make some time for exercise, listening to inspirational material and eating a lean, clean breakfast. Do it for 30 days and see how you feel. 2. Focus on profit-producing activities. An easy way to do this is to journal your days. Put everything you do in your journal and you’ll see where you are spending your time. Then you can tell if you’re doing income-producing activities or just busy work. 3. Calendar everything. This goes hand in hand with #2. Whatever it is you’re going to do for that day put it in your calendar and stick to it. Give yourself a start time and an end time for each day. 4. Create time blocks. When you’re creating that calendar use time blocks and batch your time according to the activity you’re doing. Set aside a specific day and time for making sales calls, for doing coaching calls, etc. It’s important to do right-brained activities on specific days and left-brained activities on other days, otherwise you’re going to tire yourself out and you won’t be at your best. Also give yourself time to work ON your business from a high level standpoint, and not just in it. 5. Give yourself a break. You need time throughout your day to eat, drink plenty of water and get in short bursts of exercise. Doing those three things will keep your energy up and keep you from feeling fatigued (also telling yourself you’re going to have energy all day will help!). So schedule breaks regularly and in short intervals. 6. Binaural beats. There’s an app called Relax that I use. It is a binaural beats app that tunes your brainwaves to help you focus better on the task at hand. I pop in my ear buds, listen to it while I’m focused and I get more done in less time! 7. The fuel you feed your body. What you feed your body plays a pivotal role in how much energy you have, and the more energy you have the more you can accomplish in less time! For 30 days try not eating carbs, and drinking more water during your workdays. Add in some greens - I like Amazing Greens - for extra energy between meals. You’ll feel the difference when you do. 8. Get a standing desk. You don’t have spend a few thousand dollars to do this, try something like Varidesk that goes on top of your existing desk. I do this, and it definitely has boosted my productivity! 9. Be aware of your emotions. Learn how to detach yourself from certain outcomes or situations. Your self-worth shouldn’t be tied to whether or not you make a sale. You’ll create more energy and more joy in your business if you don’t depend on a specific scenario to be happy in your business. 10. Set micro goals throughout the day. I do this for myself, you might’ve guessed by now how much I love setting goals! But when I get everything accomplished for my day I stop what I’m doing, even if it means my workday is over at 5pm rather then the 6pm I had scheduled. And then I reward myself, something you should do as well. Give yourself the gift of a massage or go enjoy a hobby of yours when you’ve finished early that day. You’re worth it and your business will thank you for it! 11. Make time for fun. Yes you should take your work seriously but not so seriously you never have fun! Be your best, do your best but enjoy life too. Everyone has challenges and once you embrace those challenges everything in your business will become more enjoyable. That’s part of being an entrepreneur: the more successful you become the bigger your challenges will be. If you’ve got big challenges you’re doing something right! 12. Journal your week. Write down what happened in your week and reference your calendar when you do. It’ll be easy to see what’s working, what’s not working and where you can adjust when you calendar everything and then write it out in your journal. And those are the top 12 ways I recommend to be more productive and have more joy in your business. Take whichever of those appeals to you and apply it to your business, create your own blend of tips and make it your own to fit who you are and what you do. The Model Health Show

One of the biggest mistakes in conventional medicine has been the disconnection between psychology and movement. The health of your brain, nervous system, and endocrine system are all intimately tied to your ability to move. A lack of natural movement creates stagnation in your mental, physical, and emotional health. But, what is natural movement anyway? And what are the things that are hindering our ability to move naturally? Well, get ready, because Dr. Kelly Starrett is here to dissect these things for you and give you clear, comprehensive strategies to be the most healthy, functional person you can possibly be. It's been said that if you're the smartest guy in the room then you need to find another room (in order to keep elevating yourself). Well, Kelly is running out of rooms to be in because he is often the smartest guy in the building. His humble and cool demeanor wouldn't tell you that. Yet, it becomes pretty clear after talking with Kelly for a while that he can see and understand things about the human body that few people can match. Kelly is a brilliant thinker that can literally see the faults in your physical mechanics and foresee future injuries before you're ever diagnosed with anything. I'm talking about near superpowers here. But, what makes Kelly Starrett such an amazing teacher and coach is the fact that he can break things down to a real world level for you. What are one or two daily practices that can get you out of pain, or better yet, avoid it from happening in the first place? What are the major flaws in our modern lifestyle that are wreaking havoc on our mobility? How can we "reorganize" our bodies to feel good during sport, leisure, and even while traveling? You're about to gain access to this knowledge, plus a whole lot more right now! In this episode you'll discover: Why we don't have the "owner's manual" for our own bodies. How making even small corrections in your lifestyle can up-regulate your health. Why sitting is a skill you need to learn. How many additional calories you can burn by standing more. What being on your smart phone can do to your posture. The shocking impact that standing desks can have on children's health. Why practice does NOT make perfect (you'd better mind your myelination!) Why failing to recognize the connection between your psychology and movement is a huge mistake. Why you MUST learn how to do a resting squat. The #1 reason that people end up in nursing homes. Why Kelly and I are in love with the VariDesk. How to instantly reset your pelvic position and stabilize your spine. How writing a book can be hazardous to your health (funny, but true!) What poor sleep quality can do to your immune system. How to "uncompromise" yourself after being on a long flight. Why you'll want to start "gut smashing" (especially before bed). How shoes can cause problems with running mechanics. Why you need to learn how to run even if you never plan on running. Items mentioned in this episode include: * Onnit.com/Model
