Mark Adamczyk emailed from Akron, Ohio: "Mark, Just wanted to reach out to you about the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast. I found you on Sirius XM last year (March 2024) while recovering from back surgery (herniated a disc last February. 220 V down the left leg - that was a TON of fun!!) Hearing you mention recovering from hip replacement surgery the other week made me feel a certain kinship with you around the podcast. About 3 weeks after surgery, my wife and I received an invitation to travel to Ireland with our kid's high school band for them to play in the Dublin St Patrick's Day parade. (Our kids have graduated but I still cover the sports as team physician!) Having made enough of a recovery to do the walking needed, we made the trip and had an absolute BLAST touring Southern Ireland (Dublin, Kilkenny, Blarney, Killarney [my favorite!!], Ring of Kerry, Cliffs of Mohr). When I got back to the States, I started looking around for ways to listen to Celtic music as we thoroughly enjoyed listening to it while on vacation. I then found your podcast and have been listening somewhat regularly since. (Summertime tends toward country music for me. But when the weather gets colder, especially after the holidays, I find myself looking for you again! I also catch up a bit sitting outside on a weekend morning on our back patio at other times when I get the chance!) We also got a new dog soon after coming home and named him Guinness in honor of the trip! (We also thought he reminded us a bit of a pint of the brew with his white accents! Check out his collar!) When I take him on his daily walks, you are a regular on our playlist! Me walking my Irish dog and listening to the I&CMP while recovering from back surgery - beautiful!!! Thanks for helping with my recovery! Hope you are doing well with yours and look forward to continuing to listen more over time. I attached a few pics for you too - some from Ireland in places which I'm sure you will recognize and one of Guinness and I on our latest walk today!! Slainte!!!”
One Distillery, Two Time Zones, and Corsets and Whips, Oh My! Husband-and-wife team BIll and Johanna Welter came to whiskey through very different paths - thankfully, their union has produced not one, but two distilleries from which Journeyman's whiskies and spirits spring forth. Bill's passion for golf led him to St. Andrews, Scotland; Johanna's path led through hospitality, drinking whiskey at a time when "most women were drinking cosmos". Somehow, Journeyman is still an under-the-radar distillery, albeit one with two locations (in Three Oaks, Michigan and Valparaiso, Indiana). For those in the know, they're producing some of the best wheat and wheated whiskey in the country, and for this episode I got to try their high-rye cask strength bourbon which, for my mind, might be even better than their wheaters. And to be clear, their wheated products are exempt from my recent distaste for wheaters...they are complete whiskies, whether one grain or multiple, and remain some of the few I'd have on my shelf. Journeyman also holds distinction as a long-tenured distillery in the craft scene, launched in 2011 during the end of the first wave or beginning of the second (Bill wasn't quite sure, so we'll hedge!). They've turned that presence into their own formal and informal mentorship programs, lending help and knowledge to a new generation of distillers. We also touch on the impact of recent tariffs and their Ingrained program, opening up contract distilling to producers without their own capacity in Journeyman's new 140,000 square foot Valparaiso location. Oppressive governments like the Trump administration may try to erase queer identities and histories, but California Naturalist and educator Jason “Journeyman” Wise reveals how science is recognizing that the rigid, patriarchal, binary view of the natural world is no match for the true fluid, diverse and interdependent reality (interviewed by Jason Jenn). And in NewsWrap: hundreds of thousands of protesters filled the streets of London and other cities to denounce the U.K. Supreme Court‘s trans-exclusive definition of “woman,” the deceased Roman Catholic Pope Francis changed the tenor of the Church's relationship with the LGBTQ+ community, the Trump administration is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to allow its ban on transgender military service to continue while its constitutionality is being challenged, federal judge enjoins Trump administration order demanding that passport and visa applicants be limited to only male or female gender markers, the Mississippi Supreme Court tells a transgender teenage boy he must wait until he turns 21 to legally change his name to reflect his gender identity, and more international LGBTQ+ news reported this week by Tanya Kane-Parry and Nathalie Munoz (produced by Brian DeShazor). As Montana Knife Company's Founder and Owner, Josh Smith is the Master Bladesmith behind creating and designing working knives for working people that are built to last for generations. Josh grew up in Lincoln, Montana on the edge of the Bob Marshall Wilderness. At the age of 11 Josh's baseball coach, Rick Dunkerley, began teaching him how to make knives. In the very beginning, Josh would go to Rick's shop where he learned to remove stock blades under the guidance of Rick. About a year later, Josh began putting a shop together at his home. Josh's Dad gave him room to work in his equipment shop, and at the age of 12 Josh joined the American Bladesmith Society. Over the next few years Josh began forging and honing his craft. Josh turned 14 at the Eugene Oregon knife show where he met other incredible knife makers, all too willing to share their talents and knowledge with Josh. At 15 years old, Josh passed the Journeyman Bladesmith test in Atlanta, Georgia at the Blade Show. Josh became the youngest bladesmith to ever pass this test. The Journeyman test is a two-part process. A test blade must be forged and heat treated with the capabilities to chop a 1” rope in half, 2- 2x4's in half and then still shave hair. Once the cutting tests are done the blade must be able to bend 90 degrees in a vise without breaking. After passing the performance test the maker must present 5 knives to a panel of Mastersmith Judges. Each knife is examined closely to ensure the knife is made to the highest standard of craftsmanship. At the Journeyman level a maker is not expected to show perfection but is expected to show a sufficient level of craftsmanship expected from a professional bladesmith. Josh continued to work on his craft and at the age of 19 he earned his Master Smith rating from the American Bladesmith Society. Josh was the youngest bladesmith to ever pass the Master Smith test. https://www.montanaknifecompany.com/ Today's Sponsors: Black Rifle Coffee: https://www.blackriflecoffee.com/ BetterHelp: https://www.betterhelp.com/clearedhot
Jack ran for the rhythm, the movement, and the quiet, no longer chasing medals or records. A chance encounter with a younger runner stirred memories of past races, but he simply smiled—those days were behind him. His running journey had begun decades earlier in Montreal, struggling up Mount Royal, finding a rhythm that would shape his life. Over the years, races tested his endurance, from his first 5K to ultras like the Courtenay to Nanaimo 120K, where he embraced the solitude and grit of long-distance running. Now, every run was a step forward, not toward a finish line, but toward something deeper—something that had become part of who he was.

Brian Lozano, a journeyman lineworker for Midwest Energy, shares his story of working on the line in Hays, Kansas. The 28-year-old father of two started working for a contractor in Colorado in 2016, and six years later, he moved to central Kansas to work for Midwest Energy. In his service territory, he responds to wind and tornadoes, but he has also provided mutual aid when he worked for a contractor. He says it's rewarding to help communities in need and work with other lineworkers to get the lights back on. He says in the line trade, safety is very important, and he strives to work safely to come home to his family every night. Priya began her journey at Make-up Designory (MUD) in Los Angeles, earning a Journeyman degree and refining her expertise across various areas, including film and television, commercial, special effects, and editorial makeup. Committed to continuous growth, she actively pursues further education to stay current with the latest trends and techniques, fueled by her connections within the makeup community through platforms like The Powder Group and On Makeup Magazine. Over the years, Priya has had the privilege of department-heading remarkable projects, including Six Triple Eight, All The Queens Men, Ruthless, and Sistas. She has collaborated with talented artists on notable projects such as Fight Night, Ms. Marvel, Secret Headquarters, Monarch, Civil War, and many others. During our chat we talked about her work as a Makeup Department Head on Tyler Perry's “Six Triple Eight” on Netflix, the research involved in creating the character's looks, her early career as a Makeup Artist, and the makeup controversy surrounding Tyler Perry projects (you know I had to ask!). Matt Mewburn, one of Australia's last blacksmiths, takes you inside the "iron cathedral", where blacksmithing is still very much alive.Matt didn't grow up dreaming of forging knives and sculptures over heat as hot as volcanic lava.He thought he might take over the family farm or become a scientist. But when Matt was 20 years old, his father unexpectedly died, and Matt went looking for a hobby to keep himself distracted through the grief.A spontaneous trip to the local TAFE in Sydney introduced him to the magic of metallurgy and a burning passion was forged for the creativity and simple perfection of smithing.Matt developed his skills in his apprenticeship and then overseas during his so-called Journeyman years, spending time in a seminary in the hills of Tuscany, and in Scotland and Norway. For the last decade, Matt has been the custodian of Australia's largest and most historic rail works in Sydney. This episode of Conversations discusses apprenticeships, trade school, art, death of a parent, grief, origin stories, family dynamics, life story, loss, reflection, death, how to grieve, farming, regional Australia, Eveleigh, Carriage Works, Sydney, Australian history, vocational training, iron ore, steel.
