Cole McCloskey - The Electrician, Inc. On the Appreciating the People: "I don't know that it's necessarily a bad thing that we, as a society, in business, are adopting a culture of being appreciative and valuing people for more than just what they produce." Flip a switch, the lights come on. Plug in your phone charger at night and your phone is ready to go when you wake up. We take things like this for granted, but what does it take to make the lights turn on and the power to move through a house? Cole McCloskey, co-owner of The Electrician, Inc. shares with us what it takes to become one of the people that do what they can to make sure the lights can turn on the and the electricity can move through the right wires. The conversation goes beyond the nuts and bolts of working with electricity, delving into the challenges and rewards of starting a business, the importance of building trusted relationships in the trades, and the lessons learned from managing and growing a team from just a handful of employees to nearly one hundred. Cole opens up about the pivotal moment he became a partner at The Electrician Inc., why he believes in empowering team members rather than binding them with golden handcuffs, and how genuine appreciation and leadership can make all the difference in retaining good people. Listen as Cole explains his journey and how others can follow his path to become not only electricians, but entrepreneurs as well Enjoy! You have to have a master license to get the contractor license. So if that's a route someone wants to go, they do have to pass that exam. James Kademan [00:00:14]: So if they pass that test, then they have achieved master electrician status. Cole McCloskey [00:00:18]: Yeah, really above that, you can get into credentials for being an inspector if you want. The master exam is the first step towards that. If that's route you want to go. James Kademan [00:00:30]: You have found Authentic Business Adventures, the business program that brings you the struggle stories and triumphant successes of business owners across the land. We are locally underwritten by the bank of Sun Prairie and downloadable audio episodes can be found in the podcast link found at https://drawincustomers.com Today we're welcoming, preparing to learn from Cole McCluskey of the Electrician Inc. And we are talking construction, electrician, electricity, all the good stuff. So Cole, how is it going today? Cole McCloskey [00:00:59]: Going very well. Thank you for having me. James Kademan [00:01:00]: Let's talk about the foundation. What is the Electrician Inc.? Cole McCloskey [00:01:04]: So we are a full services electrical contractor. We do jobs large and small across all sectors from residential to commercial to industrial. We do also fire alarm and low voltage access control systems. So we cover a wide variety of the market in that w...

10 years in the trade. Still not certified. Not because of skills but because of fear.In this episode, we sit down with Ruben Young, Host of The Young Electrician Podcast, to unpack why thousands of electricians delay getting certified and how that fear is costing them everything from income to confidence.Raised on the streets of LA, Ruben didn't get certified until year 10. Not because he lacked skill, but because of one thing most electricians don't talk about: Confidence. This isn't just a tips and tricks episode. It's a real-deal story of fighting through limiting beliefs, addiction, jail time, and coming out on the other side to help others escape the same mental traps. Ruben's now helping electricians walk out of fear and into their certification with confidence by walking with them.
The sea around Skellig Michael never rests. Waves slam the cliffs like a heartbeat, and mist rises from the rocks like breath from some sleeping giant. Eight miles off the Kerry coast, this jagged island looks less like a piece of earth and more like a fragment of another world. More than a thousand years ago, monks climbed 600 stone steps to live here, chasing silence, prayer, and the edge of heaven. Today, visitors come for the same reason, though they may not know it. Whether you're drawn by faith, history, or a galaxy far, far away, Skellig has a way of making you listen to what the sea remembers. And that's where today's story begins — between exile and return, faith and freedom, stone and surf. Because sometimes, we're all just trying to find our way back to the ocean. With Music from Niamh Dunne, Wolf Loescher, and Jocelyn Pettit & Ellen Gira. This is Quest & Chorus #309 0:58 - Niamh Dunne "Ballyneety's Walls" from Portraits 4:17 - WELCOME TO QUEST & CHORUS Welcome to Quest & Chorus, where every wave might carry a myth, and every exile still dreams of home. I'm your bard, Marc Gunn, also host of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast, and typically host of this show as Folk Songs & Stories, but today, we call it Quest & Chorus. And today, we drift to the edge of the world, To Skellig Michael, where the sea swallows history and monks once whispered their prayers to gulls. It's also where a Jedi gave up the fight. And where a selkie sings himself back into the sea. Today's theme may seem like exile or perhaps it's where you truly belong. Quest & Chorus is a 6-part podcast series. I fuse my love of Celtic and folk music, science fiction and fantasy, and travel into a podcast with a quest. In each episode, you will get a clue to unlock a secret reward. And at the end of the season, you will combine all of those clues to unlock an even bigger amazing reward. If you're new to the show, please follow us. You can do that at PubSong.com. Its name comes from the Irish Sceilg Mhichíl which means Michael's Rock. It was dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The island's history began in the sixth century. Monks sought isolation and closeness to God. So they settled there because the early Irish monastic tradition valued hardship, solitude, and spiritual testing. The monks carved out a small community on narrow terraces more than 600 steps above sea level. The monastic settlement they built still survives. They built a cluster of beehive stone huts, stone crosses and terraces connected by narrow paths. Everything was dry-stone construction. That means they were fitted together without mortar. They were built so well that they have lasted over a millennium. The monks grew small gardens, caught seabirds and fish, and collected rainwater in cisterns. They survived off of what the island would allow. Skellig Michael was a center of devotion to Saint Michael the Archangel sometime after the 8th century. The island was also a pilgrimage site for centuries. Climbing its steps was seen as a form of penance and spiritual renewal. By the 13th century, life on Skellig Michael had become too difficult. Storms, isolation, and changing Church patterns led the monks to relocate to the mainland, near Ballinskelligs. But the island remained a place of pilgrimage well into the modern era. Skellig Michael is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is recognized for its exceptional preservation of early Christian monastic life and its haunting natural beauty. It's also become familiar to a new generation as Ahch-To, the oceanic world where Luke Skywalker lived in exile in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. Even now, Skellig Michael stands as a symbol of endurance, of faith carved into stone, of solitude turned to sanctuary, and of the fragile bridge between human devotion and the raw power of nature. LEGENDS OF SKELLIG MICHAEL One of the more famous legends involves the Tuatha Dé Danann and the Milesian invasion of Ireland. It is recounted in the Lebor Gabála Érenn (the Book of Invasions). According to this myth: As the Milesians sailed toward Ireland around 1400 BC in the mythic narrative, a storm was caused by the Tuatha Dé Danann. They are one of the faerie-like supernatural race in Irish mythology. Skellig's cliffs are sometimes mentioned as one of the treacherous places where ships were driven ashore. One version says Irr, a son of Míl Espáine (the mythic ancestor of the Gaels), was travelling from the Iberian Peninsula. He drowned and was buried on Skellig. MY THOUGHTS on SKELLIG MICHAEL 20:02 - Marc Gunn “Selkie's Life” from Come Adventure With Me Check out my blog of the puffins of Skellig Michael. Selkie's Life, Selkie Call of the Sea #234 Thank you for returning to the sea with me. Skellig Michael is not the end of the story. But it's where stories are kept safe. Next time, we wander the great alignments of Carnac, stones older than myth, standing like trees in time. Until then… If the sea calls you, don't be afraid to answer. 23:39 - CREDITS Thanks for listening to Quest & Chorus. This episode was edited by Mitchell Petersen. Chael Sonnen's career at one point was certainly known to hardcore fans, but beyond that, he had struggled to amass enough fan support and wins to really get anything going. What we didn't know was his maniacal drive would soon be on display as he would stop at nothing to achieve his father's wish: becoming UFC world champion. This is the story of those motivations and what made those 6 months rewards last until this very day.
Season 3 is here! The guys are back together after a busy summer—Jackson shares about his internship, Richard talks about growing his company, and Brent catches us up on hiring new employees. In this episode, host Beau Wigington chats with Robert Carpenter (Carp Welding)—a pipefitter and stainless TIG art creator—about his path into Pipefitters Local 636 (Detroit), what a sixth-period apprentice actually does on the job, and why he chose union life to stay close to home. Key Topics Covered:Why Robert chose the union: home nightly, benefits that keep continuity from job to job. What “laid off” really means in the union—and how the hall gets you back working.Apprentice responsibilities: working under a journeyman, proving you can weld to earn more hood time.Getting real welding time: how company choice affects whether you actually weld.TIG art and bracelets: making stainless and copper pieces without burning out.Welding copper bracelets: cleanliness, gas/cup, and dialing amperage with a foot pedal.Avoiding creator burnout: setting order limits when social posts take off.Career crossroads: staying an employee vs. starting a pipefitting/mechanical business.Work-life balance: finding a non-welding escape (hello, sport bike) to stay fresh.Memorable Quotes:As an apprentice, you're always working with a journeyman—but you're doing all the work.”“You get laid off the first time, it's gonna feel like a breakup… but it's not personal.”“I like showing up, putting my hood down, and clocking out. Sometimes I like not having a ton of that stress.”Practical Takeaways (Welding Pain Points Solved)Union stability 101: Layoffs are often just a slowdown; call the hall and get re-dispatched—sometimes by Monday.Insurance that follows you: In the union, you're not re-starting benefits at each new site; work and coverage stay centralized.Earn your arc time: Demonstrate ability early so journeymen hand you more welding (not just fitting). If you want to weld, choose your contractor wisely: Some shops barely weld; others are 40 hours under the hood.Copper bracelet TIG basics: Start ultra-clean to avoid pitting/porosity, use 100% argon and a larger cup, set machine high (~220 A available) but actually run around ~60 A with foot control so you've got headroom.Beat burnout on side gigs: Repetition is real, set order caps and batch work so socials don't turn into 70 overnight deadlines..Resources Mentioned:Pipefitters Local 636 (Detroit) – Robert's local - https://pipefitters636.org/ Blue Demon copper TIG filler wire – used for copper bracelets- https://www.amazon.com/Blue-Demon-ERCu-Copper-welding/dp/B00I4BXMPC?th=1 Save 20% On Related American Welding Program Courses With WELD20 - https://foxly.link/t8aJ0M Guest's Content & Contact:Instagram - @carpwelding https://www.instagram.com/carpwelding/ TikTok - @carpwelding https://www.tiktok.com/@carpwelding Connect with Beau WigingtonInstagram: @beaudiditwelding https://www.instagram.com/beaudiditwelding LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/beauwigington E-Mail : beauw@weld.comDownload the WELD App:https://foxly.link/Qj0VEa

In this episode of the Hunting Connection Podcast, I'm joined by Matty White from The Journeyman Way—a passionate outdoorsman whose journey into bowhunting and fly fishing has deep roots in a unique upbringing. Matty grew up on a deer farm, giving him early hands-on experience with animal behaviour, seasonal patterns, and the kind of awareness in nature that most hunters spend a lifetime developing. We dive into how that background laid the foundation for his skills in the bush, especially when it comes to tracking, stalking, and understanding wildlife movement. Matty shares how he got into bowhunting and fly fishing, what keeps him drawn to the challenge and discipline of both, and how these pursuits offer more than just a harvest—they're a way to connect deeply with the land. But Matty's outdoor journey doesn't stop there. He's also passionate about dog training, photography, bushcraft, and woodcrafting. We chat about how spending time in the bush, learning to work with your hands, and mastering the basics of survival and self-reliance can be just as rewarding as a successful hunt. Whether it's carving a tool, building a campfire shelter, or simply slowing down and observing the world around him, Matty brings a thoughtful and grounded approach to the outdoors. This episode is full of insight, stories, and shared appreciation for the lifestyle we love. Whether you're into hunting, fishing, bushcraft, dogs, or just hearing from someone who's walking the walk—this one's worth a listen. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the yarn!
Years ago, I first met Michael Stremel, who recently retired from a career in the line trade at Midwest Energy. He first started competing at the International Lineman's Rodeo as an apprentice back in 1988, and he has been involved in the event as both a competitor and a volunteer for the International Lineman's Rodeo Association (ILRA). ever since. He has about 49 years of experience in the electric utility industry and enjoys volunteering for the ILRA. Over the last few years, he has partnered with Doug Flick to pay it forward and raise funds for the ILRA Linemen Scholarship Fund through an annual gun raffle during the International Lineman's Rodeo Week.

Hey everyone...in honor of our upcoming 100th episode (!!!), I'll be occasionally re-releasing some of my favorite past conversations. And why not start with a bang: Actor, Musician & Director Paddy Considine on his favorite band Guided By Voices and their documentary Watch Me Jumpstart (Episode 34 which originally aired on May 2nd, 2024).Now that you've all caught up with Paddy and the rest of the Harrigan family on the season finale of MobLand & his band Riding The Low releasing their latest 12" EP (Above And Beyond), it's time to revisit this episode where we discuss this band that brought us together and how this documentary changed our lives forever. The original podcast show notes:This week, we talked to the actor (House Of The Dragons, 24 Hour Party People, The World's End), musician (Riding The Low), writer/director (Tyrannosaur, Journeyman) Paddy Considine, about his all-time favorite band (in any universe), Guided By Voices and the documentary Watch Me Jumpstart. We discuss these mythical legends of Dayton, what it was like for Chris being in the band and working with Pollard, Pollard's incredible work ethic and output, Paddy's trip from the UK to visit Ohio for the first time and taking a GBV/Bob Pollard tour of Dayton, the eureka moment of understanding the band, wrapping your mind around Bob's lyrics, the early confusion of why, how and who was recording this music, being under-appreciated by the establishment, GBV's influence on Paddy's acting writing & music, Pollard's legendary mix-tapes, turning people onto the band, the obsession of collecting Pollard's entire discography, beer, basements and talking to Bono about Guided By Voices. So, disarm the settlers, and let's go deep into the world of Guided By Voices on this episode of Revolutions Per Movie.PADDY CONSIDINE:Riding The Low:https://www.ridingthelow.co.uk/Tyrannosaur:https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B007ZYJT1U/ref=atv_dp_share_cu_rREVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. Mark Adamczyk emailed from Akron, Ohio: "Mark, Just wanted to reach out to you about the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast. I found you on Sirius XM last year (March 2024) while recovering from back surgery (herniated a disc last February. 220 V down the left leg - that was a TON of fun!!) Hearing you mention recovering from hip replacement surgery the other week made me feel a certain kinship with you around the podcast. About 3 weeks after surgery, my wife and I received an invitation to travel to Ireland with our kid's high school band for them to play in the Dublin St Patrick's Day parade. (Our kids have graduated but I still cover the sports as team physician!) Having made enough of a recovery to do the walking needed, we made the trip and had an absolute BLAST touring Southern Ireland (Dublin, Kilkenny, Blarney, Killarney [my favorite!!], Ring of Kerry, Cliffs of Mohr). When I got back to the States, I started looking around for ways to listen to Celtic music as we thoroughly enjoyed listening to it while on vacation. I then found your podcast and have been listening somewhat regularly since. (Summertime tends toward country music for me. But when the weather gets colder, especially after the holidays, I find myself looking for you again! I also catch up a bit sitting outside on a weekend morning on our back patio at other times when I get the chance!) We also got a new dog soon after coming home and named him Guinness in honor of the trip! (We also thought he reminded us a bit of a pint of the brew with his white accents! Check out his collar!) When I take him on his daily walks, you are a regular on our playlist! Me walking my Irish dog and listening to the I&CMP while recovering from back surgery - beautiful!!! Thanks for helping with my recovery! Hope you are doing well with yours and look forward to continuing to listen more over time. I attached a few pics for you too - some from Ireland in places which I'm sure you will recognize and one of Guinness and I on our latest walk today!! Slainte!!!”
One Distillery, Two Time Zones, and Corsets and Whips, Oh My! Husband-and-wife team BIll and Johanna Welter came to whiskey through very different paths - thankfully, their union has produced not one, but two distilleries from which Journeyman's whiskies and spirits spring forth. Bill's passion for golf led him to St. Andrews, Scotland; Johanna's path led through hospitality, drinking whiskey at a time when "most women were drinking cosmos". Somehow, Journeyman is still an under-the-radar distillery, albeit one with two locations (in Three Oaks, Michigan and Valparaiso, Indiana). For those in the know, they're producing some of the best wheat and wheated whiskey in the country, and for this episode I got to try their high-rye cask strength bourbon which, for my mind, might be even better than their wheaters. And to be clear, their wheated products are exempt from my recent distaste for wheaters...they are complete whiskies, whether one grain or multiple, and remain some of the few I'd have on my shelf. Journeyman also holds distinction as a long-tenured distillery in the craft scene, launched in 2011 during the end of the first wave or beginning of the second (Bill wasn't quite sure, so we'll hedge!). They've turned that presence into their own formal and informal mentorship programs, lending help and knowledge to a new generation of distillers. We also touch on the impact of recent tariffs and their Ingrained program, opening up contract distilling to producers without their own capacity in Journeyman's new 140,000 square foot Valparaiso location.
