Kentanji Brown Jackso In April 2022, Ketanji Brown Jackson made history as the first Black woman appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court. As a young woman, she loved the law and set her sights on Harvard University. After being discouraged by a high school guidance counselor, Jackson not only graduated magna cum laude from the university, but went on to attend Harvard Law School and served as editor of the "Harvard Law Review."  

•The American Council on Education reports that 33% of universities and colleges have female presidents. • In the Ivy League it's six of eight. Several for the first time ever. • The three women in front of the congressional committee were clearly over their heads, ill prepared, stunned, and soon reversed some of their testimony. • We're focused on identity, not talent. • Boards used to seek academic excellence and a track record of outstanding leadership. • Now they want the first woman, or minority, or trans person, or whatever. • When Biden promised a black, female Supreme Court nominee, he found Ketanji Brown, by all accounts an excellent jurist. • But he had reduced her to the “best black female” available, instead of the “best candidate available.” That's demeaning. • The Boston Association of Female Marketing Executives. Caster—cases which will determine whether Alabama's new congressional map is a violation of the Voting Rights Act—Alabama Solicitor General Edmund G. Ketanji Brown Jackson has been voted in as a Supreme Court Justice—the first Black woman to serve in that role. But, to reach this milestone, Jackson has faced enormous hurdles at every turn, including confirmation hearings that featured blatant political grandstanding and barely disguised race-baiting. Nominations have become so partisan that, on both the left and the right, the Court itself is commonly viewed as merely a tool of the party that picked its members, and several polls report a decline in public confidence in the Court. “The real political end” of the attacks on Brown Jackson, Hill believes, “is to denigrate her personally, honestly, but also to really reduce the validity of any opinions that she ultimately writes. Even though . . . many of her opinions will be dissenting opinions, dissenting opinions can carry a lot of weight.” Meanwhile, Justice Clarence Thomas's decision not to recuse himself from cases related to the January 6th insurrection, even after it came to light that his wife Ginni Thomas actively sought to influence Trump Administration officials to try to overturn the Presidential election, also undercuts the court's impartiality. It seems that the reputation and independence of the Court is in serious trouble.  Anita Hill, a professor of social policy, law, and women's studies at Brandeis University, spoke with David Remnick about the Ketanji Brown Jackson hearings, along with the staff writer Jane Mayer, who is reporting on the Ginni Thomas controversy. (Hill, who testified in the 1991 Thomas nomination hearings, has declined to speak about his stance on recusal.)

I am nothing but elated over the confirmation of the brilliant Ketanji Brown Jackson onto the United States Supreme Court. It's a huge, historic deal. And we should celebrate. Period. We also need to understand that she is about to walk into perhaps the most conservative Supreme Courts in the entire history of this country.
