Episode Highlight: On this episode of the "Embracing Only" podcast, we are featuring one of the most impactful moments from episode 40, with guest, Niyati Tamaskar. Your health is in your hands. It is your responsibility to do your own research and advocate for your health. Niyati is an engineer and an advocate for women in technology and engineering. At 34, she was diagnosed with cancer while she was breastfeeding her second child. Through her TED talk and books, Niyati sheds light on the cultural bias and regional stigma associated with cancer. This episode is just a short snippet that highlights the best and most powerful learning moment from a past episode. You can listen to the full episode (filled with more wisdom) here: Episode 40: #BreaktheBias of a cancer diagnosis as a woman of color with Niyati Tamaskar. Key Discussion Points: 00:59 Niyati's Cancer Diagnosis: Niyati's diagnosis was unfortunately accompanied by a lack of emotional intelligence and empathy. 08:33 Taking Control of Your Diagnosis: A diagnosis may feel unfair, you may struggle with self-blame, and wonder what you did wrong. Ultimately, you have to find the strength to take control of your diagnosis. 11:04 The Role of Research and Advocacy: You are the person who is in charge of your own health. You have to advocate for your best interests. 14:19 Having the Courage to Ask Questions: Asking questions and communicating with your doctor is only going to help you and your condition. You don't have to take the first opinion you receive. In Summary: Niyati Tamaskar challenges us to take ownership of our health. No matter what your diagnosis may be, it is your responsibility to do your research, ask questions, and make sure you feel comfortable with your healthcare provider so that you get the best care possible. The Church News Email Supporting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion The Church News run by Deseret News had an article about International Women's Day with several enriching stories from women leaders of the Church. However, the introduction of the article and the email header by the Church Communications Department gave a very different take and message on the day focusing instead on #BreakTheBias stating " people all over the world are encouraged to call out and break gender bias, discrimination and stereotyping in order to create a more diverse, equitable and inclusive world." DEI is something very specific in the Critical Social Justice world. Website - https://www.cwicmedia.com

We all have values. We all stand for and against certain causes. Be it people, initiatives, practices, philosophies, products - we connect to some so strongly, feel so passionately that we believe in them, stand by them, support them. Big or small, it doesn't matter. We all have values. The one value I stand for, both personally and professionally, is gender equality. Irrespective of industry, background or location, women face discrimination. And that is the harsh reality. I myself have been in numerous situations, in different industries and, at different stages of life where I've been treated a little differently to men. I'm certain you have too, and if not, then at least witnessed it. With the theme of this year's International Women's Day being #BreakTheBias, I'm finding the courage to share some of my own experiences of gender bias.More importantly, I'm also sharing practices that have helped me cope with this kind of discrimination. I have found positive ways to deal with this harsh reality, without giving in.Join me as I share 4 practices that I have learnt along the way to #BreakTheBias, how I cope with biased behaviour and what we can do collectively to change this discrimination. Please do me a favour and share your story with me so that not only do you know you're not alone but so do I. Hope there comes a time when we don't need to have a special day to celebrate women. Until then let's do our part – let's #BreakTheBias. Welcome to the Work-Life Flow podcast with a short and sweet special episode for International Women's Day and their motto #BreakTheBias.Book a Strategy call As you know, this podcast has morphed and I like to say that it is part of my journey of finding who I can best serve. At the onset of the pandemic, I felt the urge to help parents create a family team and look at education through the lens of life. While my desire to serve and help was strong, I think moms were struggling so much to just get through the day, that my program felt like “another” thing to do on top of it all. Just last week I had a client tell me that she felt like failing in life. She should be able to work, care for a high needs child and run the household. She said in tears “I see other moms do it and it makes me feel like a failure. I used to be very driven, but my child needs me so much and I don't have extended family to help. I am burnt out.”Lots of bias around the roles at home to be unearthed and cleared out. While I still love to talk about family culture and believe that it is important to work-life integration, I had to ask myself where can I make the biggest impact? Who would benefit most from my coaching? Through the pandemic nearly 2 million women have left, or shall I say had to leave, the workforce. With all the support networks suddenly shutting down, many of us had to choose between a job or taking care of our children or elderly parents. This has set us women back decades of efforts in #Diversity and #Inclusion.Research published DeloitteGlobal's report, Women @ Work: A Global Outlook identifies a number of actions that employers can take to make meaningful progress when it comes to gender equality. These include embedding a truly inclusive culture, enabling a better work-life balance by going beyond policies, demonstrating a visible and measurable leadership commitment and providing meaningful development opportunities.“Meaningful and sustained change will only come when women experience ‘everyday' inclusive workplaces—whether virtual or in-person—where statements on the importance of gender equality are backed up by meaningful actions, and where goals are set and progress is measured,” Emma Codd, Deloitte Global Inclusion Leader says. For me it's all coming full-circle now with the partnerships with Leader's Lounge and Villyge. I also earned an executive coach certificate through the Center of Executive Coaching and am now working with high-achieving Women in STEM careers to reach their leadership goals while balancing career & family, so that they can bring their best selves to all areas of life, guilt-free.Together we can change the work culture one leader at a time! In this news, I currently have 5 openings for coaching. Book a Strategy call with me today and find out how I can help you move forward in your career and leadership journey. The link is in the show notes. Now that women are slowly joining the workforce again, they are asking for more support, more flexibility, more dialogue and are rejecting the daily bias they face. Let's all pay attention to what they need and offer proper support. With this, let's raise awareness to #BreakTheBias on International Women's day!

Thanks to our sponsor, CU-Denver's Energy Program, we had the great fortune of speaking with Farhana Morales, Senior Manager Corporate Responsibility, ESG at Target Corporation. Prior to joining the team at Target, Farhana had a long career in the oil & gas industry that allowed her to explore multiple countries and cultures. During her work in energy, she was introduced to the concept of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and it truly resonated with her values. We invited Farhana on for her knowledge and experience with ESG but as you'll hear, this episode leaves listeners with so much more. In addition to explaining ESG and some of the common misconceptions, Farhana touches on lessons learned throughout her career, her passion for helping other women, and shares tips on how to find the support you need, because women CAN do it all. She also reminds us that now is the time of the "Great Upgrade," and if you aren't happy professionally to find your voice, even if it means using a hacksaw. #BreakTheBias We're releasing this episode early as we thought sharing Farhana's story is a perfect way to honor International Women's Day. We hope you enjoy every minute and ultimately, you feel inspired to become an advocate for both yourself and all of the women in your network. #BreakTheBias during the International Women's Day is an important sentiment for Carrie Schwab-Pomerantz when it comes in finances. She weighs in on some of the financial biases that women face today, including asking too many questions, not being financial decision makers, one-size fits-all type financial advice, and being unable to take investment risks. Then, Schwab-Pomerantz discusses how education offerings have changed and opportunities post-Covid for women in the workplace.
We're bringing you three interviews with female digital leaders today. We hope you are able to celebrate and enjoy International Women's Day. #BreakTheBias
Did you know that 90% of men and women have some type of bias against women? And can you guess what percentage of men think they automatically deserve the job over a woman? Not to mention when you factor in gender, race and religion the bias black hole where society tries to banish women gets bigger. In celebration of International Women's Day, I'm sippin' on these stats and more with my college roommate and bestie who shared her experience while working for a national organization in support of girls along with other moments worthy of a sip and side eye. Also, as we talk about the work that needs to be done in order to #breakthebias I'm pouring sips of encouragement to help the bias not break us!
The International Women's Day 2022 Campaign theme is #BreakTheBias: Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. Selling is the oldest profession. People must trade to live. It touches everyone and everywhere. What would happen if, through this profession of sales, we lifted up every human with full access to equality? If we served with great dignity and unbiased humility? I want to live in a world like that. Let us all break the bias. This is my quote for International Women's Day. This is on March the 8th and break the bias describes a gender equal world. A world free of bias and stereotypes and discrimination. A world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world that difference is valued and celebrated. Today we can forge women's equality and collectively, we can all break the bias. 0:00 #BreakTheBias in Today's Sales World 2:54 The importance of campaigning for parity. 6:50 The future of sales success hinges on attracting and retaining more women into sales roles. 10:25 Customer expectations of salespeople are changing. 12:19 International Women's Day, 8th of March, and Heels To Deals Janice B Gordon, the awarding-winning Customer Growth Expert and founder of Scale Your Sales Framework. Financial Symmetry: Cluing You In To Financial Opportunities Missed By Most People
In honor of International Women's Day on March 8, we're discussing retirement considerations for women that can help them #BreakTheBias surrounding women and money. Video recap: https://youtu.be/4FjSIJw8a6A Listen in to discover how you can accelerate women's equality by overcoming or breaking through these biases. Bias #1 - Women are afraid of investing This first bias is simply untrue. Actually, women are more likely to take calculated risks than men. Women are also more likely to hold an appropriate amount of investments when compared with their cash savings. Men and women are equally fearful at the beginning of their investing journeys. However, since women are more cautious about things that they are unfamiliar with they often become more educated about investing so that they feel more comfortable. In the long term, women's investments often outperform those of men. This could be due to women having more intentionality, self-control, and a higher savings rate than men. Since women are often playing catch up with their investing, they are usually excited to get started. Investment and retirement planning is especially important for women since there are so many preconceived notions that surround women and money. Bias #2 - Overcoming compensation bias On average, women make about $0.84 to a man's dollar. This is often due to the way compensation is structured. Women often ask for less, negotiate less, or don't negotiate at all. This means that women have less to contribute to their retirement savings. Knowledge is the power to overcome this bias. To improve your salary it is important to understand the average salaries for your area of the country and, specifically, for your field. Use websites like Glassdoor or Salary.com to help you research. Don't be ashamed to discuss this topic with friends, family, and colleagues to learn more. Once you've done your research, consider your next salary negotiation. Set a range that works well for you and shoot for the top of that range. Remember that you are selling yourself, so consider the value that you have added to your role. Come up with a list of your accomplishments. Listen in to hear all the tips that this bright group of women brings to the table. With a bit of preparation, you may be pleasantly surprised by your next salary negotiation. Bias #3 - Women are big spenders We've all heard this myth perpetuated; however, spending doesn't have a gender. Either partner in a relationship can be the big spender, but since women are often the ones buying for the family, it can seem like they spend more than men. Budgets are an important part of the financial health of any relationship so that both partners understand how much they can safely spend. Typically, one partner is more of a saver and the other is more of a spender, but the ideal is to strike a balance between the two. Since women have been shut out of the financial conversation for so long, they often don't know where to begin the conversation. Here at Financial Symmetry, we encourage both partners to come to the table, even if it takes an extra conversation to understand and address all of the issues or concerns. As you approach International Women's Day, consider whether any of these financial biases have come up in your life. You can research more biases surrounding women by using the hashtag #BreakTheBias. While her work is specific to Vermont, the initiatives to #breakthebias and achieve gender parity are applicable around the nation. The Vermont Women's Fund, a component fund of the Vermont Community Foundation, was established in 1994 as an enduring resource for Vermont women and girls. The Fund remains the first philanthropic resource in the state dedicated exclusively to this mission. As Director, Meg is helping to improve the future for young women and girls using her community organizing, marketing, and fundraising skills. In this episode Niyati Tamaskar shares her journey of leading from the front to #Breakthebias and cultural stigma associated with a cancer diagnosis in the black and brown communities. Niyati Tamaskar was diagnosed with cancer at age 34 while breastfeeding her second child. Through humor and education Niyati emphasizes the importance of being your biggest advocate if you were to find yourself in a similar situation. Most importantly she shares how one can thrive in their ‘onlyness' while paying it forward for others in a journey of their own. She is an advocate for women in technology and engineering, a mother, a public speaker, an author and an entrepreneur. Her TEDX talk 'Cultural bias and stigma associated with cancer' set the stage for her to empower women, especially women of color under the age of 40 who have been handed a cancer diagnosis to step in unafraid and unabashed. She is the author of two books, Unafraid and Unabashed. Unafraid was featured in Forbes magazine as one of the eight books that spark human connection in 2020.
