I was an esthetician working in a tiny little spa, barely making more than minimum wage. At the same time, I was a single mother raising a 12-year-old son on my own, constantly battling to provide for him. I had worked hard his entire life, determined that he would never experience the poverty and struggles that defined my childhood. But it was rough. There were days when I didn't know where our next meal would come from. The phone was constantly being shut off, forcing me to give friends new numbers and lie about the changes. There were cold showers because the power was out, and nights spent bundled in layers because the heat had been cut off. I remembered feeling the same desperation as a child, when my dad couldn't afford to give me the things my friends had, and how it broke his heart to say "no." https://www.harmonywoodington.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/harmonyannew/ ---------------------------------- When It Worked Podcast https://getoffthedamnphone.com/podcast

http://passion-power.com/ Michelle Zeitlin: I am so excited to be podcasting LIVE amongst people on a real red carpet! This is the first “real life” event I've experienced since the lockdowns started with Covid-19 in March of 2020, and it feels good! This two day event is the La Jolla International Fashion Film Festival, presented by Fred Sweet. Fred Sweet, the organizer and founder of this festival shares his mission and ideas for a world class event where filmmakers, fashion designers and artists can share their purpose driven collaborations in a supportive atmosphere. In preparing for this weekend event July 23, 24, 2021, I had zooms with a few of the jurists including the Iconic Heinz Holba who founded La Models, New York Model Management and several offspring initiatives. Thirty years strong in the agency business, he's worked with the biggest brands, the top designers, buyers and sellers and super models. Beyond running his mini empire for talent and models, he flies his own plane and has three daughters. We also had the pleasure of meeting his teen daughter, a tiny powerhouse herself, Charly, who I know cherished the time with some of my agency clients, Ashli Auguillard, Emily Alabi, Sophina DeJesus, and the lovely Julia Stier who also works with More Zap as a beta reader of scripts and book manuscripts, helps to edit, and I like to say she's my “Emily Blunt” referencing the best assistant ever in Devil Wears Prada! One of the VIPs, Larry Namer- and I enjoyed some face time and though it was very noisy, it was also exciting to be in the midst of the many screening rooms and walk-by traffic with other media reps, artists and film makers walking THE LOT in La Jolla. Larry and I had met years before at his offices for METAN Media in the Valley, and then we got into how he's been involved with this event and why he's inspired. He is the founder of E Entertainment Television, which launched as a cable channel with 2.5 million dollars and is now worth billions and owned by NBC Universal. Gail Garrison, in dark sunglasses and white blond hair bob is a true presence of power- she is the Creative Director of the Global Fashion Channel, and I must say we even had Paparazzi wherever she went! A former Elite model in her youth, she now works with clients and partners in South East Asia and Africa to procure, produce and distribute her original content all about fashion and design. Gail has a resonant voice and resonates creative strength. Finally, Rebecca Bustamante, past president of Women in Film, Washington DC and an actor and creative herself, returned to La Jolla to be a judge and presenter for Best Cinematography. These short films were 6-12 minutes and were developed and produced by artists all over the globe. I got to interview one particular creative team - they call themselves Architects and their film, Savage Facades. Loved all their accents and stories!

He talks about how he took his love for technology straight to Hollywood and started one of the biggest entertainment networks in the world! He says that people used to think that he lost his mind when he came up with ideas. One of these ideas was Talk Soup, which originally had a different name and a different purpose. "Hollywood is funny shit. Don't try and make it out to be rocket science!" He is an advocate for diversity and inclusivity, "Women who need a voice in media should have a voice in media." His new project is actually a beauty project with former Club Kid, Richie Rich, and it's a project for the LGBTQ+ community: https://pagesix.com/2020/08/03/richie-rich-launching-virtual-beauty-site-beautykween/He talks about his hobbies and his proudest moment, he also shares his advice for a successful life, and then he leaves me with a fun nugget at the end.... About this episode This is a very unique episode of The Startup Story because this week I am sharing my story. Listeners reach out to me often, wanting to know more about my story and why I am passionate about what I am doing with this podcast. The hard part for me has been finding the right person to interview me. One of the aspects of The Startup Story that I love so much is the conversational side of the show. I soon realized the perfect interviewer was right in front of me. This week, my wife, Melissa McKinney, helps me unpack my entrepreneurial journey for you. Allow me to introduce myself, I'm James McKinney, Creator and Host of The Startup Story podcast. With over 30,000 listeners, The Startup Story has unpacked the entrepreneurial journey of some of the most amazing people, including founders like Jason McCann from Varidesk, Larry Namer from E! Entertainment Television, and Clint Harp from HGTV and Harp Design Co. Throughout our 49 episodes you have heard me relate to founders that have overcome challenges and obstacles. You've heard me ask questions about how their marriages were impacted throughout their journey. Those questions are not arbitrary. The reason I asked them was because of my own journey. It's that relatability to the founder that makes the stories so compelling and why you keep coming back. So, just as we've done for the last 49 episodes we have to start each story at the very beginning. My beginning was far from normal. This is my Startup Story. In this episode, you'll hear About my early childhood, being a child of divorce and how it affected me How as a child, I watched my dad grow his side hustle into a multimillion-dollar enterprise Some of my early side hustles, dating all the way back to elementary school How in high school I created one of the first direct to consumer CD distribution businesses and the important (hard) life lessons I learned from the experience About being kicked out at the age of 16, living on my own, and how my dad delivered discipline in an intentional way How learning lessons of hard work and determination affected me as I continued to grow My focus and what I wanted to do with my life and how and why I joined the Marines What my life was like after the military, including going to Jr. College and starting a bookkeeping services business Why passion is so important in every person's journey About building and growing a promotional product business and recollecting on the day I lost it all If you are a married entrepreneur then you need to understand that this journey is not just yours What I did after ending the promotional product business, including working at Disney and looking to provide a stable life for my family How working at Disney led me to believe in myself and owning the title of entrepreneur I answer the question, “Do you believe that entrepreneurs are born or do you believe that they're made?” “There is a ton of value in the lessons learned when you endure the fire.” —James McKinney Resources from this episode Article $50 offer: https://www.article.com/startupstory James McKinney on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamesmckinney1/ The Startup Story on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thestartupstory/ Share the Podcast The Startup Story community has been so incredible sharing our podcast with others, and we thank you! About this episode This episode marks our 35th episode since we launched in January 2019. When The Startup Story launched we had no audience. Yet, even with not having an audience, Larry Namer, founder of E! Entertainment Television, was gracious enough to share his Startup Story for our launch. There is a high chance that you have not heard our first few episodes. For that reason, we are going to bring our first two episodes off the shelf to ensure they make your podcast queue. This week is the first of those two episodes. I hope you enjoy this episode as it originally aired on our launch date of January 15, 2019. This episode of The Startup Story features Larry Namer, founder of E! Entertainment Television. When you think of E!, you may instantly think of the show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Now for the record, Larry had nothing to do with the Kardashians phenomenon. He did, however, have everything to do with the building of this media network giant, which eventually sold for approximately $3,000,000,000 in 2007. In this episode, you will learn how Larry maneuvered the early days of his startup and how he built his company with little to no funding. Larry also shares openly about how he constantly adapted his business to ensure success, regardless of the external circumstances he faced. Wherever you in your entrepreneurial journey, Larry's story will provide you with a fresh perspective to take into your own endeavors. In this episode you'll hear Larry's start, not in the limelight of Hollywood, but in the sewers of NYC How he went from blue collar labor to management, negotiating with unions and how he began to develop a leadership mindset How qualifying for pension at 30-years old eventually led him to the West Coast His time at Valley Cable in California helping build the first two-way 61 Channel Cable System ever built The start of “Movie Time”, the obstacles Larry faced and why he was so convinced to keep moving forward with his idea How a leap of faith by an investor led to the launch of E! Entertainment Television's beginnings and how he went on to build E!'s first studio on a freight train rail station Selecting their first five hosts, like Greg Kinnear, getting coverage and establishing credibility as a network The origins of E!'s first original content show, Talk Soup (a show that makes fun of other television shows) with host Greg Kinnear and later Joel McHale Larry fondest memory from his startup story Larry's advice to entrepreneurs who may be struggling with getting traction or establishing credibility in their industry Resources from this episode Connect with Larry Namer on LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/larry-namer-18b6a/) E! About this episode This episode of The Startup Story features Larry Namer, founder of E! Entertainment Television's beginnings and how he went on to build E!'s first studio on a freight train rail station Selecting their first five hosts, like Greg Kinnear, getting coverage and establishing credibility as a network The origins of E!'s first original content show, Talk Soup (a show that makes fun of other television shows) with host Greg Kinnear and later Joel McHale Larry fondest memory from his startup story Larry's advice to entrepreneurs who may be struggling with getting traction or establishing credibility in their industry Resources from this episode Our Sponsor Movocash: https://www.thestartupstory.co/movocash Connect with Larry Namer on LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/larry-namer-18b6a/) E! "Drug companies are spending time on things which make money, not that work." That's according to filmmaker Jeff Witzeman. He followed his wife with a camera through Stage 3 bladder cancer. She came through on the other side, cancer free (in 30-days) with all her organs, and none of the side-effects which chemotherapy and radiation would have inflicted on her body. http://cancercanbekilled.com/ The Federal Drug Administration doesn't investigate natural cures because there is nothing to patent or make a profit. Germany, Sweden, and several other European countries use naturopathic medicine to heal cancer patients; Jeff says that happens at a third of the cost and with no side-effects. How do you know what is legitimate and what isn't? And what choices do children have in America when it comes to Leukemia or Lymphoma? https://www.facebook.com/MoneyMakingSense/ Jeff is a panelist at the Indie Film Showcase at Sundance Film Festival in 2018. He'll be appearing alongside E! founder Larry Namer, Australian filmmaker David Raynor, filmmaker Sue Vicory, and eco-entrepreneur Allison Melody. Their panel, scheduled for Sunday, January 21 at Bodega Tapas and Wine on Main Street in Park City, will be moderated by I Entertainment News's Monica Morrison. Before making his first film, Jeff was an actor, writer and musician, appearing in shows like Frazier and Webster and even a Miller Genuine Draft Super Bowl commercial. Cancer in America is a 100-Billion dollar a year industry and the cost of chemotherapy drugs continues to rise. Filmmaker Jeff Witzeman was inspired to look into cancer treatment and the health industry after his wife, who was urged to have an organ removed as well as chemo and radiation, was able to beat cancer naturally in Germany in just 30 days. The result was his documentary, "Cancer Can Be Killed," streaming now on Amazon Prime, iTunes, GooglePlay, vimeo and VHX.tv.
