This is the last, for now, of the shows recorded on location from the Pacific Northwest. It was recorded at Von Ebert Brewing's Glendoveer location, on the far edges of Portland, Oregon and situated on a golf course. Von Ebert is a brewery that has been crushing it since the start. Making great IPAs and Lagers as well as boasting a terrific blending program – in fact we discuss some of those beers on this show to illustrate ingredients and process. A brewery with a diverse portfolio that executes on the highest of levels always has something to explore, and prior to the show Jeff Alworth, the writer, author, and podcast host, had been driving me around Oregon and trying to dissect Von Ebert. Since it was such a conundrum, I invited him to co-host this episode. Happily it goes off the rails at points. Our guests keep us on track and they are: Sam Pecoraro, the Head Brewer who has been brewing around Portland for 11 years at various breweries, including Burnside Brewing, The Commons Brewery and Breakside Brewery before joining Von Ebert at their inception in 2018. As Head Brewer, Sam leads the Pearl District and Glendoveer Brewing teams in all quests related to IPA variants, German-inspired lagers and mixed culture beers. And Jason Hansen, the Lead Brewer and Blender who Started homebrewing right after college, and ended up getting a job at Seven Bridges Organic Homebrew Supply in Santa Cruz, CA. before moving to Sante Adairius Rustic Ales where he eventually became head brewer. He was then Lead Fermentationist at Garden Path Fermentation in Burlington, before joining Von Ebert in 2018. It's a crowded table that grows a bit more when we're joined later in the show by Madeleine McCarthy, who was then a brewer at Von Ebert but has since started working at 10 Barrel Brewing. There is a lot to unpack on this rollicking show recorded just off the practice green at the course with a an audience putting a dent into the lager taps. -John HollThis episode is sponsored by: Jack's Abby BrewingGuatemala, the land of eternal spring, rich agriculture, and affinity for fantastic food and coffee. Craft beer is a fledgling movement in the country, but it's being led by our friends from El Zapote Brewing. Our conversation with them inspired us to create a unique coffee golden lager with imported beans from Finca Retana family farm in Antigua, Guatemala. We believe this beer will have a true taste of the country and we hope you enjoy this unique lager inspired by culture, colors, and conversation. For more Drink Beer, Think Beer check out All About Beer. Modern Times is taking over the space occupied currently by The Commons Brewery in Portland, Oregon. Beer Advocate: http://bit.ly/MTaTCB
The first time I visited Ex Novo, a brewery in Portland, Oregon, I was struck by its design. It felt…designed. It wasn’t a cold space with some chairs and stuff thrown together. There was some thought put into it. From where we sat, we could see the brew tanks, bar action, interesting lighting, the space flowed so…design. The next day I hopped online and did a search to see if it was the IPA talking or if there was a design firm behind it. Sure enough. That’s where I found the website for Sum Design Studio. I emailed them and started a conversation with principal Matthew Loosemore. His firm is not only behind the design of Ex Novo, but also Cascade Brewery and Commons Brewery (he’s also part owner). Over beers, naturally, we talked brewery design, how and why he got into designing breweries, how beer builds communities, and…Spokane, Washington’s downtown. I like to think this episode is a replicate of that conversation, a bit more sober, but hopefully still interesting. From there, Loosemore’s firm has designed everything from residential to commercial to mixed-use projects. And of course, breweries. Loosemore explains how they got started on that path and the niche he’s filling. Are certain kinds of buildings more suited for a brewery? The first time Loosemore stepped into what is now Ex Novo, he knew right away. If you’ve listened to Built Blocks for the last year, you’ll get my obsession with adaptive reuse. Older buildings with new lives. Nowhere is that more evident than with breweries and taprooms. Beer, community, and creating great neighborhoods. The two go hand in hand. Why is that? How is beer a community builder? Growing up in Spokane Switching gears – to downtown Spokane, Washington. Home of the 74 Expo. Burned to the ground in the late 1800s. I had the chance to visit a couple years back and was struck with a solid downtown core and interesting architecture stock. Lots of 2-4 story brick, turn of the century stuff. As a Spokane native, I wanted Loosemore’s take on its potential. Music courtesy of Sounds like an Earful from Creative Commons Vol. 1 (Check them out – they have a slew of great, free music.)
Mike Wright started The Commons Brewery in his garage in Southeast Portland with notion of gathering friends, family and neighbors to enjoy a beverage, a meal and a conversation. We shared a beer (or two) with Mike and talked about going from the garage to the brewhouse, how Portland's growth has effected his business, and sharing recipes with other breweries in the area. Check it out!
I’m profiling a festival that showcases Farmhouse style craft beers to Vancouver, BC. In other areas of Cascadia these styles are pretty well known, but in British Columbia that isn’t always the case. Farmhouse Fest is a relatively new beer festival, held at a unique location which focuses on these more traditional styles of craft beer. I spoke with one of the event organizers, Dave Shea for Farmhouse Fest 2017 in the first segment of this podcast. This is an updated episode since it's release. I attended Farmhouse Fest 2017 and spoke with Jonathan Evans more about the festival. Later in the episode I documented the crowd & breweries reactions to the festival. On this pre-Turkey Day here in the US, we found ourselves back in Portland in this episode and we're at a brewery right up Drew's alley! We start in the pub with a brief discussion of what fine beers we'll be supping on while we're stuffing ourselves silly. We also look at some charity from No-Li Brewing, a rather "innovative" beer addition to the Not Your Father's lineup and Mike Tonsmeire's Kveik experiments. In the brewery, we examine the speciality malt market and what it means for the tide of craft beer styles from a global perspective and Drew talks about revisiting one of his favorite projects from the past with White Labs Zurich Lager strain. In the lounge, we visit with Sean Burke at Common's Brewing where we explore their farmhouse centric approach and how they grew into a beautiful space with strange equipment. For a quick tip, we share a brief note on using Hop Extracts efficiently and cleanly. (And what not to do with them!) We tackle more of your questions in our Q&A segment before closing you out with two of Drew's latest finds - HBO's Westworld and a Beastie Boys / Daft Punk Mashup that is pretty damn awesome. This week on Fuhmentaboudit!, Chris and Mary invite some brewers to the studio all the way from Portland, Oregon. We have Ben Edmunds from Breakside Brewery, Mike Wright and Josh Grgas from Commons Brewery, and Christian Ettinger from Hopworks Urban Brewery. These brewers tell us all about the city of Portland, which has around 180 breweries – that’s 1 brewery for around every 3,000 people! This program has been sponsored by GreatBrewers.com. “We let that yeast speak loudly in our beers, and the hops and the malt are a little more reserved.” Mike Wright on Fuhmentaboudit!
