Welcome back to the nonsense. This week David A. McKinney tries a new beer, a weird offering maybe, in Perennial Artisan Ales , ESB. Bitter to the brim or something like that.Gary casually sips and old favorite in Basil Hayden Subtle Smoke and pontificates on how he feels about the current state of bourbon. Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg finally come out with a RTD version of Gin and Juice. Turns out that David was just a mere toddler when that banger dropped on the world. Tennessee, which may in fact be good for nothing, is trying to ban cold beer sales. W T FWe love you all. Want to grow a better beard and become a legend? We're back on our normal game this week as David drinks Perennial Intentionally Indulgent and Gary revisits an old favorite in Evan Williams Single Barrel. The 2022 version of Intentionally Indulgent from St. Louis' Perennial Artisan Ales is an Imperial Stout with tiramisu inspired ingredients including vanilla, Sump coffee, and decadent chocolate sauce and brewed in collaboration with 2nd Shift Brewery.Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage from Heaven Hill Distillery is 7-8 years old and comes in at 86 proof. We also discuss the new list of the top 50 craft breweries by volume that was released by the Brewers Association, and this year featured a few surprises. The top five were all the same from last year, but fast-growing non-alcoholic craft brewery Athletic Brewing jumped 14 spots from 27th to 13th. Bell's is no longer ranked after being purchased last year by Lion/Kirin, and Cincinnati's Rhinegiest moved up five spots from 28th to 23rd. Craft beer gained share of the overall beer market from 13.1 to 13.2% but the overall beer market shrank by 3%. There were also 549 new brewery openings and 319 closings. There's also news this week that the bourbon industry could be worth $12.8 billion by 2031, up from $7.8 billion in 2021.And in a story that we discussed just to say the name of the bourbon is that Furman University released their own private label bourbon called FU All The Time.Make sure to visit Beers and Beards Podcast for a full list of our episodes.Use our NEW code “BeersBeards10” for 10% off at Rivalry Brews as well as 10% off at BeardOctane.com with code BeersBeards10.We also have a new sponsor in Athletic Brewing Co., the largest maker of non-alcoholic craft beer. Black Walnut Dunkel, by Perennial Artisan Ales, is a chocolate brown German Dunkelweizen aged in Missouri-grown black walnuts. Big aromas of banana sit on top of this malty wheat beer, and it finishes with a nice black walnut nuance on the palate. Pairs with roasted quail and desserts made with chocolate or bananas Perennial Artisan Ales' philosophy is to brew beer with the adventurous craft beer drinker in mind—focusing on hand-crafted, small batches of beer, using local, seasonal and organic ingredients as much as possible. Their beers are influenced mostly by Belgian and American craft styles, but the addition of premium ingredients such as fruits, spices or wild yeast strains sometimes causes the beers to defy traditional categories. Their barrel aging program features a wide variety of beers aged in wine and spirits barrels, ranging from a Rye barrel-aged Mexican Chocolate Stout to a wild yeast-fermented Saison aged on Missouri wine grapes in French oak wine barrels. They strive to always achieve balance with each of their recipes, making their beers exceptional with food. For Wymore, the desire to own a business and to create and sell something that housed his creativity has been with him since a very young age. Having a business means moving forward and trying to make a good life but to also scratch the itch of innovation and soothe that inner voice that is always pushing for more.  So, while many folks sat around binging Nextflix during the pandemic, Wymore went back to his roots in the kitchen, started messing around, and recently launched a new business, Passenger Foods. Here's our conversation."This Episode is sponsored by:BriessBriess is the leading supplier of specialty malt to craft brewers  They offer the broadest product line in the industry, including a wide range of roasted malts that add flavor, color, and character to beer. Beer for breakfast? That’s not a bad idea. We're big fans of coffee in porters and stouts. Brewers all over the world have been capturing this flavor profile, using it to highlight the subtle notes that are already present in a dark beer. And, today we’re featuring a whale of a coffee stout, and there’s one additional reason to drink a coffee beer this week. The "Wake Up and Smell The Coffee!" badge. The criteria to level up? Check-in 5 different beers with the style of Porter - Coffee, Porter - Imperial / Double Coffee, Stout - Imperial / Double Coffee, or Stout - Coffee.  We're drinking SUMP Coffee Stout (2021) from Perennial Artisan Ales and highlighting grapevine Wine | Beer | Coffee as our Verified Venue of the week.Drinking Socially is Untappd's Craft Beer Podcast. This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy is hearing from three experts in barrel aging. He welcomes previous co-host Ben Keene, a beer, cider, and travel writer from Seattle, WA; Matt Lincoln from Fremont Brewing in Seattle, WA; and Jake Endres from Crooked Run Brewing in Sterling, VA. Ben kicks off the conversation by explaining the differences barrel aging can make, highlighting the complexity and bold intensity the process brings to beers. Matt emphasizes the layering of flavors that barrel aging offers, as well as the unique characteristics of each individual spirit barrel. Then, Jake lets us in on a couple of brewing secrets, including why Black Friday is such a big day for new beer releases, and how aged hops should be your best friend. Plus, the group walks Jimmy through the aging process from brew to bottle, or more recently, cans, which they all agree have accelerated in popularity during Covid-19. Finally, Ben, Jake, and Matt offer up a couple of barrel-aged inspirations for anyone looking to try out a new brewery.Beer List - Ben: Ferment Brewing CompanyJake: Pen Druid Brewing and Allagash Brewing CompanyMatt: Perennial Artisan AlesPhoto Courtesy of Ben Keene.Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. Owned by husband and wife duo Cory and Karen King, Side Project Brewery was recently named the second best brewery in the world. But as the name implies it started as a side project. Cory got his start homebrewing before working as the head brewer at Perennial Artisan Ales. A passion for oak aged beer and a desire to try out new recipes was the birth of Side Project Brewery. Eventually they opened Side Project Cellar in Maplewood and then grew to the point of opening the brewery just around the coroner on Manchester. But despite a small size, Side Project Brewery is behind some of the most in-demand stouts, saisons and wild ales across the country. Whether you’re new to their beers or a long time fan, Karen and Cory sat down with the Meet St. Louis Podcast to talk about the passion behind the beer, how to navigate your first beer release and what they’re drinking when they get off work. Season 3, Episode 8 – This week, beers from Night Shift Brewing and Perennial Artisan Ales. This week, Nagel brought the pain with SoCal rarities from Perennial Artisan Ales and Night Shift Brewing. Before we get into the beers, it should be known that Greg’s cask ale festival called “Firkfest” is going down on March 19, 2016 in Anaheim, California. We’ve been promoting this event for good reason—it’s a unique festival to Southern California, featuring 50 breweries and 30 cask beers, ranging from the more traditional cask conditioned beers to firkins with chocolate, peppers, or whatever else brewers want to add to their standard release and one-off beers. Get your tickets at firkfest.com. Excellent Brews from Perennial and Night Shift. First up on the show this week is a brew from Night Shift Brewing, a gose made with oysters. Oysters are more commonly used in stouts to add a salty, briny/dry character. In this case, they were added during the boil of the gose, which is a beer style that is inherently salty. Adding the brine character from oysters is a natural fit for the gose style of beer. Next up is another gose made by Perennial Artisan Ales, but this one goes (oh, words) in a different direction. This beer also has a tart, salty quality, but is made with lemon peel and orange peel, along with a healthy dose of key lime juice. This beer is great—a true summer seeeper. We wrap up with two more Night Shift beers, Ever Weisse (radness) and Maracuya. Night Shift is reminiscent of The Bruery in terms of their curious exploration and their quality execution of unusual beer styles. At the same time, Perennial is also kicking ass and taking names. We can get Perennial in SoCal right now, but Night Shift would be a welcome addition…just saying’. BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT. 00:00: 00 - People love to focus on gigantic and impressive fossils, but tiny fossils of tiny parasites can also teach us a lot about our history of living with those critters that would take advantage of us. We begin the show with some  Schistosomiasis eggs found around the stomach region of a fossil human from Mesopotamia. Next up is a tick in amber with something that looks a whole lot like the bacteria for lyme disease inside of it, which you can vaccinate your dog for but not yourself. 00:26:40 - While blood may be appetizing for a tick, we humans prefer other sorts of beverages. Kelly is not yet off the  wagon, due to her status as a mammalian mother, so she enjoys a decaf latte with a cookie. A special cookie, but not the kind of special you might be thinking. This cookie is going to support a pretty great cause. Namely Project Sedna, helping to fund the exploration of our fast melting arctic via encouraging both native peoples and young women to take an active role in documenting ice loss. Ben has an Ice Capp from Tim Hortons. It's a thing up there, don't ask too many questions. Ryan explains a new favorite style of his, the Berliner Weisse, which he enjoys in the form of a Hopfentea from Perennial Artisan Ales. 00:26:40 - While they may munch on us from time to time, how often do we get back at parasites by eating them? Carl Zimmer collects some examples of our culinary relationship with parasites, including a favorite dish of former U.S. President George Washington. Have you ever eaten a parasite? Tell us about it in the comments! 00:57:51 - PaleoPOWs are a lot like parasites. They have a complex life cycle and can be quite draining over time. Just kidding, they're always a boost! Kelly presents a donation from Jesse O. Thanks for keeping the show going, Jesse! Ryan reads an e-mail from Joel S. in response to the weird ABV labeling of Panamanian beers in comparison to China and other exotic lands with strange labeling practices. And Ben finishes us off with a tweet from Arvind about whether or not U.S. scientists prefer the metric system or silly imperial units?   Thanks for listening and be sure to check out the Brachiolope Media Network for more great science podcasts   Music for this week's show: Tick of Time - The Kooks Java Jive - The Ink Spots Eat It - Weird Al Yankovic
