Duke Football is back on the field Friday night, and we preview their game against the Northwestern Wildcats on DBR Bites #58! Northwestern is in some new temporary digs right on the edge of Lake Michigan, and that will be the stage for a Friday night game against Duke. Donald and Jason begin the preview by discussing what we will see from Northwestern's players. They're led by a quarterback in Mike Wright that's a dual threat option, throwing the ball in the air and leading the Wildcats in rushing in Week 1. There are some other skill players on the offensive and defensive sides of the football that Duke will focus on, but Northwestern hopes to combine options with quick throws to move the ball down the field. After the break, we discuss some of the things Duke needs to do well in order to win on the road, and it starts with establishing the run. Duke wants to improve on their rushing performance against Elon, as that could open up the rest of the offense. On defense, Duke will hope to contain Wright, particularly on the run, and force their offense off the field. Our offense can move the ball quickly and can tire out Northwestern's defense. Finally, Jason and Donald predict that a pair of Duke's experienced wideouts could have a big night and it's one of the keys to Duke getting the win in Evanston. Make sure you're following us! #duke #dukebluedevils #dukefootball #wakeforest #wake #demondeacons #accfootball #theacc NOTE - The day after we recorded this, Mike Wright committed to Northwestern. Two days afterwards, Sion James committed to Duke. Just ignore those parts of the podcast. Be super attentive to everything else, though. Our old friend Conor O'Neill stopped by to give us his thoughts on Wake Forest and Duke as the programs head into 2024. Conor covers both programs for Rivals. He's got a good thing going over at Devils Illustrated - sign up, folks! Before talking football, we took a few minutes to discuss the legacy of one of the greatest recording engineers (also known as a record producer) in music history, Steve Albini, who, sadly, passed away recently. He was a member of influential industrial rock bands like Big Black and Shellac. Albini's career as prominent independent musician gave him an opportunity to start recording for other bands and he made the most of it. During his legendary career, Albini worked with a wide variety of bands including the Pixies, Nirvana, The Breeders, The Jesus Lizard, PJ Harvey and Man or Astro-man?. The story behind the initial recording of Nirvana's In Utero is worth the time to read about. I enjoyed Albini's sound as a young kid living in a fairly boring town. RIP, man. RIP. After discussing what the Deacs can expect, we spend some time talking the Duke QB battle and how we shouldn't overlook what Grayson Loftis might be able to do if he gets a shot. While we're both high on Maalik Murphy, it's hard not to think that Loftis might be able to make a name for himself in Durham. Oh, and Murphy has a canon for an arm and will showcase it as the Blue Devils will run a variation of the Air Raid. All right, all right, all right! Conor and I also discuss the portal, NIL and how the NCAA needs to let schools employ athletes. And we get into a little basketball, too! This is another good talk with a guy who is close to the program. I know you'll enjoy it. Please call the pod (540-632-0160), leave a message and you'll get in an episode. Let me know what you think about what we think in the comments, on Mastodon, on Reddit, on Post, on Instagram, Spoutible, Bluesky or on Twitter. Mississippi State insider Steve Robertson joins the show on the Farm Bureau guest line talking about the news surrounding the Bulldogs after a loss live in the BankPlus Studio. Steve talks about how the loss to Kentucky made the conversations around replacing head coach Zach Arnett ramp up and fans are growing impatient. Steve looks at how you can't risk another bad season next year with Ole Miss succeeding and says you have to put the football program first. Bo asks Steve if he thinks Will Rogers will play against Texas A&M and Steve thinks that it isn't completely out of the question. Steve thinks that third string QB Chris Parson could take the majority of the snaps against Texas A&M but wouldn't be surprised if Mike Wright came out for the first series. Bo asks Steve if there was anything positive from the MSU game and Steve says that Chris Parson showed the team and fans some light when it comes to QB play without Will Rogers. The Mississippi State 1998 football team was honored by the program over the weekend and Steve talks about his favorite players from that era. Steve thinks that Woody Marks will likely play against the Aggies which is a bright spot for the team but the return of Will Rogers is still up in the air. Out of Bounds is sponsored by BetterHelp. Rich reacts to the Steelers' 24-0 preseason rout of the Atlanta Falcons and explains why we should expect a huge leap from 2nd-year Pittsburgh QB Kenny Pickett this season. The Fantasy Footballers' Jason Moore and Mike Wright join Rich in-studio to discuss where you should draft Colts RB Jonathan Taylor and Raiders holdout RB Josh Jacobs, if Vikings WR Justin Jefferson or 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey should go #1 overall in your fantasy draft, why they still love but are a slight bit leery about Chargers RB Austin Ekeler, if drafting Travis Kelce in the first round would be a mistake, if the 2nd round is too soon to select a QB (even Patrick Mahomes), and says which rookie WR is could put up the best numbers this season.
