BARTON WILLMORE: UNCUT. IN CONVERSATION. FINDING A WAY.

Back in 2017, we hosted a survey and debate alongside the Birmingham Post, on the future ambitions for Birmingham to 2030. Five years on, and five years into Andy Street's tenure as West Midlands Regional Mayor, how is the ‘capital' of the region reflecting these ambitions and implementing change? How has the direction for the wider region changed post-pandemic? What areas of focus do we believe should now be a priority? How is the Commonwealth Games impacting the urban fabric? What should the priorities be for growth to 2050?We brought together a range of people to discuss this topic, who are working within and delivering change across the city, while we happily came together within it to celebrate all things Barton Willmore and Stantec, at The Custard Factory in Digbeth. Featuring: Rob Garratt, St Joseph Homes; Charles Goode, University of Birmingham; Jez Collins, Birmingham Music Archive; Daniel Griffiths, Stantec; Kathryn Ventham, Barton Willmore, now Stantec; Robin Shepherd, Barton Willmore, now Stantec (Chair)

In this episode, we speak to special guest Lisa Brown from Lisa B Interior Design, a design agency based at the Custard Factory, Birmingham. We discuss what the state of the design industry has been like during COVID, as well as hearing her backstory about how she got to where she is now. We also pose the question, just HOW creative is the general public when it comes to starting a new project? What to do when there's no forthcoming information from a prospective client! And of course, how to handle the situation when residential clients spar between themselves with competing ideas! Lisa also explains what the general design process is, how to go about approaching a designer, & what you need to know to get the best result; as well as detailing the differences between approaching interior design in a residential vs. commercial setting. A trip to the Mockingbird Cinema in the Custard Factory yields a massively hyped up and receptive audience of fat white blokes for Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. Mike is one of them, and he's never been harder to pick out of a lineup, laughing like a drain at the fan service and antics. José isn't, and he was already a bit too old for Kevin Smith when he emerged in the 90s, but he has almost as good a time as everyone else there. The film is huge fun and creates a palpable sense of community, filled with friends and family, incorporating in-jokes and characters from throughout Smith's work - it's pure comfort food for its fans. We think about Smith as a figure, his reputation as a writer who can barely direct, and what he takes pride in. And we look over his filmography, José thinking back on what made Chasing Amy radical in its day, and Mike suggesting that with Jersey Girl and Cop Out, Smith's reputation, and perhaps an external factor or two (remember Bennifer?) played a part in the hostile reception for two films he found perfectly acceptable and even charming. He's an interesting figure, Kevin Smith, a director whose cinematic reputation is outshone by his stardom as an individual, something to which his mighty legion of podcasts and Q&As speaks - indeed, Reboot's UK screenings come with a bespoke post-credits Q&A, and Smith is accompanying the film around the US and Canada on its roadshow release - but his films have earned and maintained a devoted following for 25 years now, something to which the audience tonight can attest. Wherever Reboot is showing, it's worth checking out, because with an audience as up for it as ours was, it's a special event. Recorded on 1st December 2019.

BrewBroker are a company that connects brewers to breweries, brands to beers within the global marketplace. Whereas contract brewing once had - and some would argue, still does - a stigma attached to it, many brands and breweries are turning to resources much larger than their own to have their beers brewed on their behalf. For many breweries with spare capacity, it also offers a good opportunity to maximise potential and generate income rather than allowing tanks to remain idle. Though some may hold onto the courage of their convictions to roll up their sleeves and don their Marigolds for themselves, others are perfectly happy to have someone mash in for them. This week, we talk to Daniel Rowntree from BrewBroker to discuss how their company is helping unite the beer industry and fill the need, wherever it is found, through contract brewing and white labelling. Here Carl is at the medieval crossroads of thriving market town of early Birmingham where the half-timbered black and white Old Crown pub has somehow survived the spread of the industrial city. And, beneath our feet, hidden from view and forgotten is the River Rea alongside which Deritend grew up in the shadow of the Bullring the parish church of St Marin. Today, this is a vibrant part of the city’s culture and business centred around the iconic Custard Factory. Andy Spencer has been involved with the music industry since the late 1980’s. Today, he still possesses the same passion and enthusiasm for music but with the added knowledge and experience to know what makes a crowd scream with approval! Like many DJ’s of his era, Andy has progressed from playing vinyl records to CDs, and has established a great understanding of the Pioneer CDJ1000’s and various professional mixer units. And certainly the last 10 years have demonstrated that Andy can ‘mix it with the best’, with appearances at the Winter Music Conference, Miami, plus DJ sets at the Ministry of Sound, London, the Custard Factory, Birmingham, Fez Club, Cambridge, Club North, Manchester, Rapture, Loughborough, Escapade, Newport, and Studio 54, Coventry. Some of these appearances have been alongside established DJ’s such as • Seamus Haji (Big Love) • Mark Doyle (Fierce Angel/Hed Kandi) • Dan Smith (Danism/Defected) • Michael Gray (Full Intention) • Sonny Wharton (Toolroom) • Jim ‘Shaft’ Ryan (Miss Moneypenny’s) • Jeff Jefferson (Miss Moneypenny’s) • Tom Heron (Café Mambo) • Miss Divine (Cream) • Claire Spooner (Pacha) • Andy Nicholls (Love Shy) • Jon Vickers (Ibiza Rocks) • Rid Welson (Naughty But Nice) • Dave Pearce (Dance Anthems) • and the late, great Tony De Vit (Trade). He has also had mixes featured on radio via BRMB FM’s DanceMasters show and Riley & Durrant on Galaxy FM. Although he started DJ’ing back in 1988, developing through a mixture of private parties and several more commercial venue residencies, it wasn’t until the Summer of 2005 when he launched Funkin Good – a brand to promote ‘chunky, funky & soulful house music’. Andy enjoyed much success in the running, promoting and DJ’ing at various events throughout the Midlands. During 2010 he ran several Funkin Good All-Night Party’s at Karma Bar in Great Yarmouth, with further more successful nights in 2011. In May 2008, Andy collaborated with fellow Midlands DJ’s Alex Ross, Shaun Mynett and James Brewerton to launch FLUSH. They quickly established a monthly night at the Forge Bar in Cannock playing funky, electro, tech and progressive house music. The night has gone from strength to strength, and has subsequently held events at the Custard Factory in Birmingham, Bar 360 in Stoke On Trent, the Loft Bar and Ciro’s in Ashby De La Zouch, and the Ikon Bar in Newcastle Under Lyme. In addition, Andy has returned to more commercial venues with a Summer 2009 residency completed at the Varsity Bar in Coventry, quickly followed by a new Friday night residency at Rio’s in Leamington Spa. The success of Friday nights has continued throughout 2010, and in addition Andy has taken bookings throughout the UK, plus various other events & parties that he is invited to play at! Currently, Andy has a DJ residency at The Ropewalk in St Paul’s Square, Birmingham on both Friday & Saturday nights. Friday is a commercial night featuring music from different genres & decades, with Saturday night promoted as a House Music event under the name of STYLE. The success of this Saturday night event has led to further DJ appearances & the running of STYLE night’s at other Midlands venues. A recent new venture for Andy has been to co-produce a monthly podcast show with Shaun Mynett for Electronic Sessions. As of March 2011, Andy produces & hosts a monthly 1 hour podcast show called House Bound, and is broadcast exclusively on Sense.fm. The success of these 2 projects have led to his new weekly show called At Night that he presents for Cannock based station, Chase.fm. During the Summer of 2012, Andy was invited to join the DJ roster for the legendary club night Miss Moneypennys, and has been involved with the renaissance of the brand over the past few months. Away from the club scene, Andy also provides DJ & PA services to several major High Street retailers, such as Selfridges, House of Fraser, Debenhams & Bank. So, continuing into 2013 & what is shaping up to be another hugely successful year for Andy Spencer, with some new DJ, production & promotion projects. But one thing will always be the case - Andy is a hard working, experienced DJ with an immense passion for house music.

Ah yes, the day approaches when falk and i depart for the AVIT VJ conference, so time for a bit of last minute creativity before packing the bags, checking the equipment list and going throught the airport hassle on tuesday morning. Traveling with a laptop, hard drives, monitors, and cameras is NEVER fun. It means 3 security checks between istanbul and london for me...after awhile u learn how to pack all your gadgets so its easiest to unpack them even after they have been bombarded with electrons...all those layers of cables, motherboards, and power adapters makes airport screeners reeeeeel nervous these days...and u cant help but having short nerves yourself. I'll make sure that i am travelling with less than two books. Just because you are paranoid doesnt mean you aren't. under continual global surveillance. Its about OIL WArUM SONST. So i thought i would brighten my (and your) day with a bit of retro sun and surf action..hula girls in the 60's in hawaii with ray-banned surf hodads mixed with a nice bit of flash animation from a chrysler car add made in canada. Retropetrol sunshine wishes from exiledsurfer... i've spent all week getting the my new website up and running... check it out here , getting stickers printed for the aritficialeye and a nice big white vinyl banner for the vidvox boys david and ray who will be jetting across the ocean... so catch u from Birmingham with hopefully some spontaneous collaborations from me and falk sometime this week....At least he's scheduled to help drop some beatz not bombs on friday nite at the Custard Factory!
