Nicola Willis: How petrol will be prioritised in worst-case scenarios Finance minister Nicola Willis spoke to Q+A about how the war in Iran and unfolding fuel crisis could affect New Zealand in worst case scenarios, including if there are widespread cancellations of deliveries on force majeure grounds. She discussed how the government is considering prioritisation if that happens. She also discussed other scenarios in which there's a much longer term issue with higher prices, and what that will mean for the wider economic position for the country. How CEOs are preparing for Iran war fallout Q+A canvassed a group of CEOs for a business insight into how they're preparing their companies in case the fallout from the Iran war gets worse. We spoke to Port of Auckland CEO Roger Gray, Mainfreight Managing Director Don Braid, and Ballance Agri-Nutrients CEO Kelvin Wickham. But is help now on the way? How drones have taken over the “kill zone” in Ukraine Drones and other unmanned weapons systems have never been more effective on the battlefields of Ukraine, making the concept of front lines non-existent. Instead, a kilometres-wide area now sits between the two armies, where humans are constantly at risk of being targeted. Brigadier Stuart Nasse describes it as being like “the opening scene of Terminator 2”, and says the way war is waged has changed radically. He leads the multinational coalition on drones supporting Ukraine, and was in New Zealand to speak at the Centre for Strategic Studies. Ministers are reassuring Kiwis the country is well-placed to deal with any threat to fuel supply driven by the war in Iran - saying there's no need to panic. The possibility of fuel rationing or even car-less days does remain open - but the government says that is not on the table right now. Petrol and diesel prices have been climbing quickly with the conflict putting a strain on shipping and fuel exports from the Middle East. Deputy political editor Craig McCulloch spoke to Lisa Owen.
Let's talk about the week you're probably having… Petrol prices have hit $2 a litre – and heading higher – thanks to the US-Israel strikes on Iran disrupting global oil supply. Cost-of-living anxiety is back with a vengeance. And Afterpay Day officially kicks off on the 19th, though half the brands on your feed have already launched early. Your sales data is probably already softening as consumers sit tight and wait for the deals. So the question on every brand founder's lips right now: do I discount? The honest answer isn't yes or no. It's it depends entirely on how you do it. RM Williams runs percentage-off promotions occasionally. Their brand is completely intact. Adore Beauty discounted frequently after their ASX float and watched margins fall to almost nothing. David Jones once had a tuxedo-wearing pianist on a Steinway in their ground floor – and made a deliberate decision to never, ever call their promotions a "Sale." Same tool. Wildly different outcomes. In this week's episode of The Brand Marketing Show, I pull the whole thing apart – the five conditions under which a straight discount is fine for a premium brand, why you lose your best customers to confusion not price, and three ways to play Afterpay Day that protect your positioning while still capturing the revenue opportunity. This one's worth a listen before next Wednesday. And if you'd rather just talk it through for your specific brand before Afterpay Day – margins, offer mechanics, positioning – that's what a Growth Strategy Session is for. The war in Iran has seen high petrol prices translate to higher fuel prices at service stations across the country. The federal government is urging Australian motorists to not panic buy following reports of some stations running out of fuel, while others introduce rations. The effects are being felt in many industries – from airlines and fishers to truck and taxi drivers. Stephanie Youssef spoke with Australian Taxi Industry Association CEO Blair Davies about how the added costs and uncertainty is impacting the already pressured industry

Hour 1 - There’s a lot going on in the world, including an active situation in the Middle East. And it’s severely impacting the price of gas in the US. The average price went up 40 cents within a week. So why are they blowing up oil fields? The Los Angeles basin is no longer filled with smog, despite more vehicles on the road. It’s due to technology, filtering and fuel efficiency. Why doesn’t an oil-rich state like California produce more gas and oil? South Africans are facing an impending and massive R8-a-litre fuel price shock when prices are adjusted next month. This spike is a direct consequence of the prolonged war in Iran, which has driven the Rand cost of oil up by 40%, jumping from R954 to R1,328 a barrel. The higher oil price - now above $80 a barrel from below $60 a week ago - is significantly impacting global inflation expectations, triggering nervous trading on Wall Street overnight. Also in Today's Daybreak: Global and local markets are under pressure, with the JSE down 0.75%, mainly due to a 2.5% fall in resource stocks. The Rand opened at R16.60 against the US dollar. Gold and Bitcoin remain steady at $5,150 and $71,250, respectively. SA's Geopolitical Tightrope: ANC Top Seven member Nomvula Mokonyane visited the Iranian Embassy in Pretoria to sign a condolence book for the assassinated Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Professor Edward Minnie discusses how this brings South Africa's delicate position on the war into sharp focus. Iranian Succession & Trump: Donald Trump is insisting on being involved in the selection of the new Iranian leader and strongly opposes a "North Korean style" succession by the Ayatollah's son. However, the FT's Tehran correspondent reveals that Mojtaba Khamenei has already emerged as the leading candidate in highly confidential initial voting. Investment Strategy Insights: Piet Viljoen discusses his worldwide flexible 'Cockroach' fund. He shares his protective strategy of holding a high exposure to previously inexpensive energy assets to guard against unpredictable global events. He also unpacks Warren Buffett's approach to geopolitics and explains his allocation to cryptocurrency.

Oil prices have steadied for the first time since the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran. But concerns about energy security and prices are weighing on consumers. In France, long queues have formed at petrol stations, despite the energy minister's assertion that the public shouldn't worry about shortages. Also in the show: shipping giants Maersk, Cosco and Hapag-Lloyd suspend all operations in the Gulf, and the Trump administration plans to raise global tariffs to 15 percent "sometime this week".

The sharpest cuts came after the federal EV tax credit expired, with the Hyundai IONIQ 5 leading the slide at a 13.8% drop of over $7,000, followed by the Chevrolet Equinox EV at nearly $4,000 off — six models in total posted drops above 5%. FORD TEASES EUROPE CAR RETURN AFTER FIESTA, FOCUSFord CEO Jim Farley used the Q4 2025 earnings call to signal "exciting plans" for passenger cars in Europe, framing the comeback as a selective, profitable return to specific segments rather than a volume land grab. Two new EVs built on Renault's Ampere platform are expected in the subcompact segment from the Ford–Renault partnership, with new passenger cars set to start arriving in 2027 under a new dedicated Europe passenger-car leadership role. UBER EXPANDS EV RIDES ACROSS EIGHT UK CITIESUber has rolled out its EV ride option to eight more UK cities — Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, Edinburgh, Cambridge, Belfast and Merseyside — at standard UberX prices, after falling short of its pledge to run an all-electric London fleet by end-2025. Only 40% of London miles are now covered by EVs, with UK General Manager Andrew Brem citing charging access as "the biggest barrier," prompting Uber to announce driver support measures including discounted home and public charging in partnership with Pod Point. BMW TALKS PRICE FLOOR TO DODGE EU MINI DUTYBMW and the European Commission are in advanced talks to replace the EU's 20.7% countervailing duty on China-made Mini BEVs with a minimum import price agreement, according to Handelsblatt — covering the Mini Cooper Electric and Mini Aceman, both built at BMW's Zhangjiagang joint venture with Great Wall Motor. The approach would mirror the "price undertaking" the EU accepted from Volkswagen Anhui in early February, which freed the Cupra Tavascan from countervailing duties in exchange for a confidential price floor, volume cap and EU investment commitments. EU CITY BUS SALES HIT 60% ZERO-EMISSIONSix in ten new city buses registered across the EU in 2025 were zero-emission — 56% battery-electric and 4% fuel cell — a dramatic jump from just 12% when the Clean Vehicles Directive was adopted in 2019. Five member states hit 100% zero-emission city bus sales in 2025 (Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia and Slovenia), and Transport & Environment says a fully zero-emission EU city bus market is achievable as early as 2028.MG2 SET FOR 2027 UK LAUNCH AT £20,000MG will enter the electric supermini segment in 2027 with the all-new MG2, targeting a starting price of around £20,000 (~$25,200), to take on rivals including the Renault 5, Citroën e-C3, Fiat Grande Panda and the incoming VW ID. Polo. The car will use the newer E3 architecture from the MG4 Urban, run front-wheel drive with a torsion-beam rear axle for cost efficiency, and feature a 12.8-inch touchscreen with physical climate controls — a reveal is expected in the second half of 2026. MG CONFIRMS MGS9 PHEV SEVEN-SEATER FOR UKMG will launch the MGS9 plug-in hybrid SUV in the UK later in 2026 as its new flagship, offering three full adult-sized rows and targeting rivals such as the Peugeot 5008, Kia Sorento and Skoda Kodiaq at a value-led price point. The model already holds a five-star Euro NCAP rating and could reach UK showrooms as early as summer 2026, extending MG's line-up to 11 models. AUSTRALIA NVES DATA SHOWS HYBRIDS DO THE HEAVY LIFTAustralia's National Vehicle Emissions Standard published its first half-year performance data (July–December 2025), showing EVs made up roughly 12% of new vehicles supplied, with about two-thirds of manufacturers — including BYD and Polestar — meeting their fleet-wide emissions targets. Petrol- and hybrid-focused brands such as Mazda and Hyundai fell short and face penalties if they don't improve, while the data reveals that near-term emissions gains are leaning more on efficient hybrids than on full EVs. LECTRON ADAPTERS WIN UL 2252 SAFETY CERTIFICATIONLectron has earned UL 2252 safety certification across its full range of EV charging adapters — covering J3400, CCS1 and J1772 in both AC and DC variants — with its two DC adapters handling up to 500 amps at 1,000 volts for peak power of 500 kW, and built-in thermal sensors that trigger derating if heat rises during fast charging. The certification comes as the North American charging landscape remains split between NACS and CCS1 on DC networks and J1772 on AC infrastructure, making a certified bridging adapter an increasingly essential tool for EV drivers navigating the transition.
