It’s due to technology, filtering and fuel efficiency. Why doesn’t an oil-rich state like California produce more gas and oil? Chief Executive Simon Parham says pump prices have gone up from about 10 to 20 cents a litre. He told Mike Hosking it's because they buy their product on a weekly basis. Parham says with short sharp shocks it's very hard to avoid price increases. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The conflict in the Middle East is starting to have a significant impact on Australia's economy, given the fighting looks a long way from easing. The ASX has opened with a sharp sell off and is down more than three per cent. The oil price has surged alarmingly, more than 15 per cent, and is now $100 US a barrel for the first time in more than three and a half years.Petrol prices have been rising sharply across Australia causing people to panic buy and fill up jerry cans at the bowser. The situation is also worrying farmers who rely heavily on affordable fuel and fertiliser. This comes as Iran's state media reveals Mojtaba Khamenei will replace his father Ali Khamenei as the country's new supreme leader. It means hard-liners are still in control of Iran, and that's at odds with efforts from the US and Israel to bring about regime change. It's also raised questions about whether the US and Israel will assassinate Mojtaba, like his father.Pressure's on the Australian Government to try and find a solution to stop the potential persecution of the Iranian women's soccer team who are about to return home after the Asian Cup.The team's been playing matches in Australia but they didn't sing the national anthem during one of their games, prompting backlash from the hard-line regime.Aid groups warn players are in a difficult position because even if they are offered asylum, their families could face persecution back home.

Economy Watch
The consequences of a series of bad choices bedevils the US, and the rest of us

Economy Watch

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 8, 2026 7:14

Kia ora. Welcome to Monday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand. I'm David Chaston and this is the international edition from Interest.co.nz. Today we lead with news of zero progress in the mess in the Middle East. In fact, it has probably gotten worse. And in the week ahead, geopolitical developments will likely dictate global market directions. Reports by the IEA and OPEC this week will reveal how the institutions see the supply shock of seaborne energy from the Persian Gulf. The spotlight on US economic data will be on consumer inflation for February (Thursday) and PCE for January (Saturday). Both are expected to rise (CPI to 2.5%, PCE to 2.9%) but everyone will know this is the base on what the March data (released on April 11) will be built on. Where US inflation goes, the bond market goes, and the cost of money locally, Of course, we will be tracking that for you. In China, they will release February inflation data, with headline CPI expected to firm to 0.8% from 0.2%, while producer prices are likely to decline at a slightly slower pace of 1.1%. They will also release new yuan loans data which is expected to decline in February, partly reflecting seasonal weakness linked to the Lunar New Year holidays. In Japan, we will get updated machine tool orders results. In Australia, it will be about consumer and business confidence, consumer inflation expectations. In India, it will also be about CPI data. Locally, apart from some retail data (card use) and more analysis on mortgage activity, data releases will be relatively quiet this week. But there will be plenty of news to follow, especially flowing from the consequences of shrinking workforces in the US, which will have global implications. The US economy shed -92,000 jobs in February at the headline level, the most in four months, following a downwardly revised +126,000 rise in January and much worse than forecasts of a +59,000 gain. From a year ago, payrolls are up +129,000 and that is unusually low. Apart from December's tiny +59,000 year-on-year gain you have to go back to the pandemic (and Trump 1) to find as weak a rise. It gets worse by broadening the view of all employment, not just payroll employment. That broader view shows overall employment down -391,000 in February from a year ago, the second consecutive shrinkage. US retail sales inched lower by -0.2% in January from December, slightly less that the expected dip. It was the first decline since October. From a year ago, they are +3.1% higher. Most of this is accounted for by 2.5% CPI core inflation. US inflation may be about to get a shock. Petrol pump prices are up today +10% from a year ago, up +18% from a month ago. And these costs are only just getting started with US crude oil up +35% in a week, up the same in a year. When US March CPI is reported, the Fed won't be able to look away.  They are facing fast-weakening labour markets and fast rising inflation. They have a dual mandate so they will have to choose what to prioritise. The simple fact is that inflation problems are harder to remedy using monetary policy tools than the labour market. Absent political pressure, they would want to fight inflation first. (If they choose the other goal, they will embed inflation for a very long time.) In Canada, their widely-watched Ivey PMI surged higher in February, a strong expansion signal, to its best since September 2025, and prior to that its best since July 2024. In the Persian Gulf, the Qatari oil minister said in the next few days they have to decide whether to declare force majeure, releasing them from obligations to deliver supplies to customers. He said that could drive crude prices to US$150/bbl. There are still no ships transiting the Straits of Hormuz - except Iran-linked ones. China's foreign exchange reserves rose to US$3.428 tln in February, a small +US$30 bln increase over the previous month and the seventh consecutive monthly gain. These are now back to their highest level since November 2015. USD weakness helped, but it is clear US efforts to 'contain China' aren't working at the most fundamental level. Meanwhile, they bought slightly more gold and now have 74.22 mln troy ounces. American missteps have juiced the price of gold of course, so the value of their holdings rose +US$20 bln to US$388 bln at the end of February, now 11% of their total reserves. After falling consistently since August, the FAO food price index rose in February, basically tracking similar levels for the start of 2025. But there is wide variation between categories. Meat prices are steady, Dairy prices are falling as is sugar. Dairy prices are now at their lowest since the start of 2024. But vegetable oils are rising, and fast, with cereal prices turning higher too. Meanwhile, metals prices are rising, led by aluminium's overnight jump, and it is now approaching the heady heights of the pandemic peaks. Copper and zinc have been rising recently too, even nickel and zinc. Sulphur is another essential commodity at a peak, even higher than the pandemic levels. This is a particular problem for China. But iron ore prices are not joining the party. The UST 10yr yield is now just on 4.13%, up +2 bps from Saturday.  The price of gold will start today up +US$28 from Saturday at US$5172/oz. Silver is up +50 USc at US$84.50/oz today. American oil prices are up +US$1, at just under US$91/bbl, while the international Brent price is up a bit less to be now just on US$92.50/bbl. The Kiwi dollar is unchanged against the USD from Saturday, still just on 59 USc. Against the Aussie we are down -10 bps at 84 AUc. We are up +10 bps against the yen. Against the euro we are up +10 bps at 50.9 euro cents. That all means our TWI-5 starts today little-changed at just over 62.7. The bitcoin price starts today at US$66,882 and down -2.0% from this time Saturday. Volatility over the past 24 hours has been moderate at just on +/- 2.5%. You can get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz. Kia ora. I'm David Chaston and we'll do this again tomorrow.

South Africans are facing an impending and massive R8-a-litre fuel price shock when prices are adjusted next month. This spike is a direct consequence of the prolonged war in Iran, which has driven the Rand cost of oil up by 40%, jumping from R954 to R1,328 a barrel. The higher oil price - now above $80 a barrel from below $60 a week ago - is significantly impacting global inflation expectations, triggering nervous trading on Wall Street overnight. Also in Today's Daybreak: Global and local markets are under pressure, with the JSE down 0.75%, mainly due to a 2.5% fall in resource stocks. The Rand opened at R16.60 against the US dollar. Gold and Bitcoin remain steady at $5,150 and $71,250, respectively. SA's Geopolitical Tightrope: ANC Top Seven member Nomvula Mokonyane visited the Iranian Embassy in Pretoria to sign a condolence book for the assassinated Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Professor Edward Minnie discusses how this brings South Africa's delicate position on the war into sharp focus. If this is still going on in two or three weeks, lots of countries, including ours, will start to feel the pinch. Brent Crude Futures topped out at $85 a barrel overnight, the highest price since 2024. JP Morgan says it could hit, worst-case, $120. The Iraqis are now pulling back production because of the Hormuz logjam. Refineries in Asia are, according to Bloomberg, thinking about cutting production by 20-30% for the same reason. You've got tankers backing up and unable to port. All this stuff means delays. Our economy is quite dependant on oil and gas. It's a common misconception that we aren't. Because we generate 80% of energy as renewables, or thereabouts, people often think that's the same as use. In fact, about 60% of our energy comes from fossil fuels. Kelly Eckhold from Westpac told me yesterday it's likely petrol prices will go up for us. As of yesterday, he estimated 8 cents a litre at the pump within a week or two. Oil prices are lower by comparison of late but that $100 to $120 barrel JP Morgan scenario is key. That's the point at which our inflation forecasts would have to change. And we know that that means, prices going up. Think about how much of what you do in a day, driving a car, using a plastic pen, powering your business, trucks getting food to supermarkets, uses oil. And once you get those prices going up, you get general prices going up. And then you get the Reserve Bank's back up. And then what? Do consumers pull back spending again? Is this event the hill our recovery dies on? Let's hope not. It's early days. Scenarios are exactly that. A lot of TBC. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The sharpest cuts came after the federal EV tax credit expired, with the Hyundai IONIQ 5 leading the slide at a 13.8% drop of over $7,000, followed by the Chevrolet Equinox EV at nearly $4,000 off — six models in total posted drops above 5%. FORD TEASES EUROPE CAR RETURN AFTER FIESTA, FOCUSFord CEO Jim Farley used the Q4 2025 earnings call to signal "exciting plans" for passenger cars in Europe, framing the comeback as a selective, profitable return to specific segments rather than a volume land grab. Two new EVs built on Renault's Ampere platform are expected in the subcompact segment from the Ford–Renault partnership, with new passenger cars set to start arriving in 2027 under a new dedicated Europe passenger-car leadership role. UBER EXPANDS EV RIDES ACROSS EIGHT UK CITIESUber has rolled out its EV ride option to eight more UK cities — Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, Edinburgh, Cambridge, Belfast and Merseyside — at standard UberX prices, after falling short of its pledge to run an all-electric London fleet by end-2025. Only 40% of London miles are now covered by EVs, with UK General Manager Andrew Brem citing charging access as "the biggest barrier," prompting Uber to announce driver support measures including discounted home and public charging in partnership with Pod Point. BMW TALKS PRICE FLOOR TO DODGE EU MINI DUTYBMW and the European Commission are in advanced talks to replace the EU's 20.7% countervailing duty on China-made Mini BEVs with a minimum import price agreement, according to Handelsblatt — covering the Mini Cooper Electric and Mini Aceman, both built at BMW's Zhangjiagang joint venture with Great Wall Motor. The approach would mirror the "price undertaking" the EU accepted from Volkswagen Anhui in early February, which freed the Cupra Tavascan from countervailing duties in exchange for a confidential price floor, volume cap and EU investment commitments. EU CITY BUS SALES HIT 60% ZERO-EMISSIONSix in ten new city buses registered across the EU in 2025 were zero-emission — 56% battery-electric and 4% fuel cell — a dramatic jump from just 12% when the Clean Vehicles Directive was adopted in 2019. Five member states hit 100% zero-emission city bus sales in 2025 (Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia and Slovenia), and Transport & Environment says a fully zero-emission EU city bus market is achievable as early as 2028.MG2 SET FOR 2027 UK LAUNCH AT £20,000MG will enter the electric supermini segment in 2027 with the all-new MG2, targeting a starting price of around £20,000 (~$25,200), to take on rivals including the Renault 5, Citroën e-C3, Fiat Grande Panda and the incoming VW ID. Polo. The car will use the newer E3 architecture from the MG4 Urban, run front-wheel drive with a torsion-beam rear axle for cost efficiency, and feature a 12.8-inch touchscreen with physical climate controls — a reveal is expected in the second half of 2026. MG CONFIRMS MGS9 PHEV SEVEN-SEATER FOR UKMG will launch the MGS9 plug-in hybrid SUV in the UK later in 2026 as its new flagship, offering three full adult-sized rows and targeting rivals such as the Peugeot 5008, Kia Sorento and Skoda Kodiaq at a value-led price point. The model already holds a five-star Euro NCAP rating and could reach UK showrooms as early as summer 2026, extending MG's line-up to 11 models. AUSTRALIA NVES DATA SHOWS HYBRIDS DO THE HEAVY LIFTAustralia's National Vehicle Emissions Standard published its first half-year performance data (July–December 2025), showing EVs made up roughly 12% of new vehicles supplied, with about two-thirds of manufacturers — including BYD and Polestar — meeting their fleet-wide emissions targets. Petrol- and hybrid-focused brands such as Mazda and Hyundai fell short and face penalties if they don't improve, while the data reveals that near-term emissions gains are leaning more on efficient hybrids than on full EVs. LECTRON ADAPTERS WIN UL 2252 SAFETY CERTIFICATIONLectron has earned UL 2252 safety certification across its full range of EV charging adapters — covering J3400, CCS1 and J1772 in both AC and DC variants — with its two DC adapters handling up to 500 amps at 1,000 volts for peak power of 500 kW, and built-in thermal sensors that trigger derating if heat rises during fast charging. The certification comes as the North American charging landscape remains split between NACS and CCS1 on DC networks and J1772 on AC infrastructure, making a certified bridging adapter an increasingly essential tool for EV drivers navigating the transition.
