Dublin-born, London-based artist Niall Jackson aka Swimmers Jackson releases his second album Now Is All via his own Wonky Karousel Records label this Friday, April 7. Made between March 2020 and March 2022, it's a journey of sorts through the pandemic. He released his debut album Murmuration in May 2020, but with no opportunity to tour, Jackson took to writing as many songs as possible to document the feelings of that time before heading back into a studio in Limerick over Christmas 2021 and St Patrick's Day 2022. Armed with a handful of songs about loss of identity, an uncertain future, concerns with society's direction, and getting older against your will, the resulting album Now Is All is both hard fought and hard won. We talk about life in London, his creative process, getting radio play from Steve Lamacq, and go through some of the tracks on the album. You can buy it at: https://swimmersjackson.bandcamp.com/album/now-is-all Swimmers Jackson tour dates: April 6: Islington Assembly Hall, London (supporting Kila) April 7: Norton's Digbeth, Birmingham (supporting Kila) April 8: Secret Cinema, Crystal Palace April 14: Betsey Trotwood, London April 20: Roisin Dubh, Galway (supporting David Kitt) April 23: Spirit Store, Dundalk (supporting David Kitt) April 28: Pharmacia, Limerick (supporting Jinx Lennon) May 24: Maureen's Bar, Cork City May 26: Prim's Bookshop, Kinsale May 27: Levis' of Ballydehob May 28: Workman's Cellar, Dublin

As great as London may be, it tends to be the place that most people go – and stay in – when they visit the UK. If you need event destinations outside the capital, consider these cities (which are easily accessible by air). Join Todd Bludworth in this Spotlight Episode as he explores the best place to host your next event with Pip MacFarlane. ● Edinburgh○ The Scottish capital is the perfect spot for history, spectacular views, and a traditional experience of Scotland○ Choose a venue in the historic Old Town, with the Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle, or the bustling, neoclassical New Town○ In the evenings, unwind with a scotch and classic Scottish dishes such as haggis, black pudding, or Scottish smoked salmon○ Looking for a fun bonding activity? Try traditional Scottish ceilidh dancing (pronounced kay-lee)● Manchester○ The UK's “second city”, Manchester, has a large international airport, so it's perfect for welcoming your global guests○ Vibrant city in the north of England○ Home to one of the world's best-known soccer clubs, Manchester United○ Great nightlife in Manchester, so ideal for unwinding after a busy day of meetings○ Also close to Liverpool, the music capital of the UK● Brighton○ 30 mins from London Gatwick Airport, one hour from central London○ Arty seaside town - not quite the Florida Keys, but a great example of a British seaside town○ May is Brighton Festival season, a big arts festival showcasing music, dance, theater, performance art, and more○ Brighton Pride takes place in August. Brighton is considered the “LGBTQ+ capital of the UK” and is known for its open-minded community and fun atmosphere○ Opt for an event venue on the seafront for views over the English Channel● Birmingham○ Birmingham is around an hour northwest of London by train (worth mentioning that all big cities are very reachable by train in the UK!)○ Huge, very multicultural city○ Head to Cadbury World to enjoy the most famous British chocolate○ Opt for the city center, cultural hub Digbeth or historic Jewellery Quarter for the best event venues in the middle of the action○ This is the place to be to sample a huge array of different cuisines● Belfast○ Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland and just a short hop across the sea from Great Britain (the main island of the UK)○ It's a lot less busy than the big English cities, so ideal for a more laid-back atmosphere○ The Ballyhackamore district is the “brunch capital of Belfast”, earning it the nickname “Ballysnackamore.”○ The Titanic was built in Belfast in 1912, and there is a popular Titanic Museum○ If you want to make the most of your time in Northern Ireland, be sure to head out to Giant's Causeway, north of Belfast, for one of the country's most striking natural featuresLove the show? W/C 17th October 2022If I hadn't been to Birmingham this week then I wouldn't of thought about Birds Custard. If I hadn't thought about Birds Custard, I would never have discovered that the Birds Custard Factory used to be spread of fifteen acres of land in Digbeth, and that over a 1,000 people used to work there. If I hadn't been researching the Birds Custard Factory, then I wouldn't have found out that it was originally constructed for Sir Alfred Frederick Bird in 1906, and remained there until the company moved to Banbury in 1964If I hadn't been reading about Sir Alfred Frederick Bird, then I wouldn't have discovered that his Dad Alfred Bird invented egg-free custard in 1837.And if I hadn't started down this path, I wouldn't have reached the conclusion that had Alfred's wife not been allergic to eggs I probably wouldn't have spent my week in Birmingham in the first place.Stay safe.Another One Bites The Dust - QueenMonopoly LifesizedCharles Walker InterviewNewsnight IntroductionBirds CustardTherapy For Me (or TFM as I now refer to it) is a bit of an audio curiosity. It started out as a mechanism for me to clear my head, with the hope that by saying stuff out loud it would act as a little bit of self-help. Back in 2017, we hosted a survey and debate alongside the Birmingham Post, on the future ambitions for Birmingham to 2030. Five years on, and five years into Andy Street's tenure as West Midlands Regional Mayor, how is the ‘capital' of the region reflecting these ambitions and implementing change? How has the direction for the wider region changed post-pandemic? What areas of focus do we believe should now be a priority? How is the Commonwealth Games impacting the urban fabric? What should the priorities be for growth to 2050?We brought together a range of people to discuss this topic, who are working within and delivering change across the city, while we happily came together within it to celebrate all things Barton Willmore and Stantec, at The Custard Factory in Digbeth. Featuring: Rob Garratt, St Joseph Homes; Charles Goode, University of Birmingham; Jez Collins, Birmingham Music Archive; Daniel Griffiths, Stantec; Kathryn Ventham, Barton Willmore, now Stantec; Robin Shepherd, Barton Willmore, now Stantec (Chair)

Jack Brabant is the founder of Digbeth Dining Club, a multi award-winning street food event that has transformed the city's food landscape by turning some of the Midlands most unique venues into vibrant, street food destinations. Even when abbreviated, when someone mentions “DDC” in Birmingham or further afield, it's become one of the main brands that people associate with Digbeth. DDC is a brand that has become synonymous with this cultural hotspot & it embodies everything the district is about. Digbeth Dining Club isn't your usual dining experience, they strip back the frills and fanciness of fine-dining and offer an authentic, unique experience where they let the food do the talking. In this episode, we discuss the pilot of the free school meals and the other amazing pieces of charity work they've been doing since last October to ensure all children are fed, Jack's upbringing & organic path into street food, the inspiration behind bringing the DDC vision to life, the realities of the struggles in the first few years when developing the business, the exponential growth in recent years, the ambitious calculated risks that paid off when they worked with the likes of Warwick Castle, and overall how DDC has stayed true to its roots by retaining the core family values that's in turn taken the brand to where it is today. Whilst there are no definitive ingredients to success in business, Jack shares inspiring wise words on the importance of giving it a go, taking risks, treating people right & knowing your worth. In this episode, we talk to Jordan Patel from Art.Quarter, which will end up being, we think, Birmingham's most adventurous multi-use site yet; currently being built, it will end up housing commercial units, office space, retail outlets and pop-up shops, food and drink outlets, technology centres, AR and VR gaming centre, amongst many other things! All in the heart of Digbeth, the home of Birmingham's creative industries. We find out how the build and overall project is going, especially with the inevitable setbacks with COVID19, who this venue is for, and how it can be utilised. Jordan also goes on to explain how the Art.Quarter project is going to be able to start supporting young & start-up businesses by offering countless routes of business support, to give the best chances possible of making it a success. It's an ambitious, gargantuan task! But as you'll hear, with Jordan's passion and determination, we wish him every success with it. We're convinced it certainly will be... The Beat Brings Us Together Podcast returns with a talent packed series of superbly creative individuals who share their musical journey with us. This week I am joined by George Hadley of Sum Cellar who discusses his early CD collection, Digbeth nightlife, the effects of lockdown on events, and the rise of Sum Cellar.
Banwo Idowu is the Delivery Lead for the infamous Digbeth based, School of Code. We talk about his journey to find his way to School of Code and the way they inspire and empower their students to go on to do amazing things after they graduate from their boot camps. Banwo and I get to grips with the work it takes to get employers bought into what School of Code is doing and why job descriptions and client meetings are so important in order to market your brand and culture! My favourite quote from him in this episode was: “Hire for attitude, train for skills” Banwo is as honest as they come, and is a great person to know and have had a chance to interview for this first episode of ReCX meets Digital Skills Solutions Providers. As always, this series of podcasts have been recorded to send a message to people in tech communities across the region, UK and globe, to promote the amazing work that these digital skills solutions providers are doing in order to bridge the digital skills gap. Give it a listen! #recx #schoolofcode #digitalskillsgap #solutionsnotproblems #together

For this episode the BWF team hopped on the train to Birmingham and huddled around a microphone in independent bottle shop Clink in Digbeth. We were joined by special guest Rob Derbyshire of @Hopzine beer reviews on You Tube and discussed reviewing beers on YouTube and the news that Beavertown have sold a minority share to behemoth brewers Heineken for £40m. Correction: In this episode Simon mentions the Lock and Key beer convention in Birmingham. Unfortunately he got the date wrong! It should have been the 20th to 22nd July, not the 28th. For the first episode proper in our new series, we arrived at the giant screen at the back of Birmingham's Hennessey's pub for the Monaco Grand Prix We thought we'd try out a new format, namely a "react to events in the race as they happened" style like all those cool kids on youtube are doing. And gogglebox. You be the judge as to its success. In what ended up being a test of endurance, we kept thinking of ways to throw the chequred flag early and go home. That's Monaco sometimes Follow www.twitter.com/formulapubcast for latest info on the events if you want to join us, or just have your sarcastic comments read out by Paul or Miller

Well known Birmingham historian, broadcaster and author, Carl Chinn, takes us on a walk along Deritend High Street. It’s a short in distance but long in history. Here Carl is at the medieval crossroads of thriving market town of early Birmingham where the half-timbered black and white Old Crown pub has somehow survived the spread of the industrial city. And, beneath our feet, hidden from view and forgotten is the River Rea alongside which Deritend grew up in the shadow of the Bullring the parish church of St Marin. Today, this is a vibrant part of the city’s culture and business centred around the iconic Custard Factory. Join Carl on this fascinating walk and listen to the podcast KEYWORDS: Deritend, Birmingham, Medieval Market, River Rea, Charter, Old Crown, Digbeth, Carl Chinn, Walks, Books
