On this week's show we look at the phenomenon of watching a little screen while simultaneously watching a big screen. We also read your emails and take a look at the week's news. News: New data shows ESPN, Fox One both over 2 million subscribers Get Disney+ and Hulu for a combined $5 per month for 12 months Second Screen Viewing The phrase "Second Screen Viewing" is when a person watches TV and simultaneously uses a secondary device like a smartphone, tablet, or laptop to engage with content related (or unrelated) to what's on the TV. On this week's show we will focus on the "unrelated" aspect Second Screen Viewing and how it is affecting what you watch on your TVs Second-screen behavior has become a common companion to TV viewing allowing viewers to engage in social TV by live-tweeting or posting reactions on platforms like X (Twitter), Instagram, or TikTok—especially during live sports, reality TV voting, or award shows—while following conversations through hashtags like #SuperBowl or #TheBachelor. But what we will be really focusing on today, many people simply multitask with unrelated activities—scrolling social media, texting, gaming, or working—while the TV plays in the background. So what are the TV producers doing about this phenomenon? Simplifying Content for "Background" or "Half-Attention" Viewing Producers are increasingly designing shows that don't require undivided focus, reducing the risk of viewers abandoning content if they glance away. This includes "dumbing down" narratives to accommodate distractions like social media scrolling. Streamlined Storytelling - Streamers like Netflix instruct showrunners to create "second screen enough" scripts—simple plots, minimal complex dialogue, and easy-to-follow arcs that allow viewers to dip in and out without confusion. For instance, Justine Bateman, a writer-director, reported notes from streamers emphasizing that "the viewer's primary screen is their phone," so shows avoid twists that demand full attention. This approach has sparked debate. Critics argue it stifles creativity, turning TV into "background noise" rather than compelling drama, but it boosts retention metrics for casual viewers. Integrating Interactivity and Social TV Features - To pull attention back to the main screen (or extend engagement), producers build in real-time elements that encourage phone use tied to the show, fostering community and loyalty without full distraction. Companion Apps and Voting: Apps sync with broadcasts for polls, stats, or exclusive content. Dancing with the Stars added in-app voting and a "Star Panel" rating system in 2024, letting fans score performances live—boosting participation without leaving the TV. Similarly, Love Island (ITV Studios) uses apps for couple-voting, turning second screens into engagement hubs. So basically, TV producers aren't eliminating second screens; they're evolving with them and dumbing down what you watch on an expensive 75" "Secondary" screen. Commentary How about this for an idea? Make compelling content! My wife and two daughters are constantly on their phones when we watch TV together. You know when they aren't? When watching high quality shows that require your attention. Examples include, Last Frontier and Lone Wolf. Shows like Survivor (and don't get me started on how they ruined that show) barely require 20% of your attention. The fact is, it's easier to dumb down content for people who are obsessed with their smart phones than it is to make compelling content. Yes, streaming has opened the door to way more content but unfortunately most of it is not worth watching. And I know I am right in this assessment because studies show 70-90% of viewers engage in second screen viewing regularly.
Nik Sharma, CEO, Sharma Brands, and James Borow, VP, Product & Engineering, Comcast, explore how direct-to-consumer performance tactics are transforming traditional TV advertising. Recorded at Marketecture Live, they discuss the rise of real-time measurement, the merging of walled gardens and open web ecosystems, and how Universal Ads is making TV as accessible and data-driven as social platforms. The conversation highlights creative testing, AI's growing role in production, and what marketers need to unlearn to thrive in the next phase of connected TV. Takeaways Direct-to-consumer brands are driving a shift toward more measurable, performance-focused TV advertising. The creative process for TV is moving closer to social media's rapid testing and iteration model. Lower production barriers and ad tech integration are making TV more accessible to smaller brands. Incrementality and third-party measurement are replacing outdated metrics and first-party trust. Creative quality and adaptability now matter more than expensive, polished production. TV's role is increasingly about amplifying social campaigns and driving results on mobile. AI is unlocking faster creative workflows, but still requires human direction and testing. CMOs need to think like measurement product managers, balancing creativity with data literacy. The future of TV advertising lies in accessibility, automation, and integration with digital platforms.

The long-awaited Project Q is officially called PlayStation Portal, and the reaction to it has been surprisingly divisive. Priced at $200 and intended purely as a remote play option for PS5, some potential players see obvious use cases while others think this entire initiative is a waste of time and money. Here on Sacred, we have three different opinions to present you with about the future of Portal, and why it might be a mightier machine than some think. Plus: Sony announces new high-end audio devices for PlayStation while gobbling up a boutique headphone company, release dates have been revealed for games like Granblue Fantasy: Relink and Persona 3, BioWare lays off 50 employees, Geoff Keighley finds himself under siege on-stage at Gamescom, and more news followed -- as always -- by listener inquiries. Has game writing hit an all-time low? Which game world (if any) would we like to visit? Will we ever escape the era of the sequel? Is Colin a secret glizzy gobbler? Full transcript There are some necessary dividing lines in FanDuel CCO Mike Raffensperger's line of work. The most obvious one is that online sports gambling is legal in 19 states, but not others. The company also refuses to do name & likeness deals with college athletes because many of them aren't old enough to gamble, Mike explains. But he outright rejects the idea — widely accepted in some marketing circles — that there needs to be such a bright line between brand and performance marketing. "What human being experiences a brand or marketing that way?" he says. "'Ah, I see their new television campaign is out, building their brand attribute... I've formed a more intimate relationship with this company.' A little bit later, I'm on Twitter: 'Oh, they've got a special offer that is 20% off this week! I should click on this and activate.' Nobody does that! That's not the way anybody actually has a consumer journey." Today on Building Better CMOs, Mike talks with MMA Global CEO Greg Stuart about why CMOs are becoming more like strategic leaders, how FanDuel became "one of the most successful second-screen experiences in the world," and the challenges he is tackling beyond just legalization. Plus: Why FanDuel is able to says it airs more live sports than any other company in America. Folge Nummer 82.

What starts as a conversation about interest in Aaron Rodgers potentially winning his fourth MVP award results in fans either offering help or support for Jesse's TV viewing habits at home. Also, a round of Did You Hear This? featuring some special guests making appearances Wednesday on ESPN Wisconsin. And breaking Bucks news on NBA Trade Deadline Day.
Music by beatlach - http://bit.ly/MMH-Beatz

One thing you can say for sure about 2020's smartphone landscape: there's no shortage of options. Sales have taken a dip in the last few years, causing a number of manufactures to get creative with their offerings. LG's certainly in that boat. It's been a less than spectacular few years for the company's mobile offerings, but it's not for a lack of trying.
