Bassist Horace Panter has been a valuable and reliable sideman for his entire career. He starts out as a founding member of the Specials, contributing mightily to the magic sound of that revolutionary band. After their demise, he joined forces with Dave and Roger to form General Public and rode that wave for a few years. Since then, he's been around for nearly every version of the Specials including the Neville Staple fronted version in the 90s and the Terry Hall reunion version of the 2000s. These days he's mostly retired and doing what he wants. We hear stories of the ups and downs, his last interactions with Terry Hall, his art career, and much more. In this episode, we're turning up the volume on The English Beat and General Public, bands that defied categorization and left an enduring legacy. The English Beat, often lumped into the ska revival of the late 1970s and early 1980s, was far more than just another two-tone band. Their music was a vibrant fusion of ska, reggae, punk, and pop, creating an infectious and thought-provoking sound. In 1980, The English Beat faced a crossroads. With creative differences emerging, the band decided to part ways. But the musical journey didn't stop for its members. Dave Wakeling, Ranking Roger, and a new lineup formed General Public. This new project departed from the ska-heavy sound of the English Beat, leaning more towards pop and new wave.

Happy Tuesday Everyone and Welcome back to the latest episode of Phage Therapy Today! Phage science is awesome, the business is growing, and the numbers on paper are looking great. But along with this excitement, we must realize the end goal is to save lives and improve clinical outcomes. The truth is phage therapy is still very far from accessible to the general public today. There are many reasons for this, and the lack of information and community available to the general public and doctors is definitely a major contributing factor. Because phage therapy is not yet the standard of care and is considered experimental, doubt from doctors and patients can delay the start of phage therapy treatment. In this week's episode, Christopher Schaffer shares his story of how he saved his own life by going on a journey where he took the lead in finding a cure for his MDR infection. He did tons of research on his own, reaching out to all the help  he could get, and navigating through difficult situations related to Covid and the Ukraine war. The amount of courage, determination, and faith he demonstrated is awe-inspiring. Let's give it a listen! To bridge this gap, I am unofficially announcing the formation of a nonprofit organization led by Christopher Schaffer, Professor Irene Chen, and myself. Our aim is to create a community for patients and doctors looking into phage therapy. The goal is to provide information on success stories from past patients to build trust in phage therapy, connect with therapeutic resources, and provide support to all going through AMR infections, ensuring you are not alone out there. As a first step, I would like people to re-post, @doctors, and patients who require phage therapy resources to join our Discord group at: https://discord.gg/gtrX5ZpE. We would also like everyone else passionate about phage therapy to join and comment in the “volunteers” and “general” channels only.

In episode 22, Johnny talks to music supervisor, movie producer and music manager Tarquin Gotch. Tarquin's career saw him rise to Head of A&R at Arista Records in the 1980s - overseeing acts like The Thompson Twins, Simple Minds, The Stray Cats, and The Beat. He then moved to Warners, transitioning Prince, Madonna and many other American acts into the UK. Moving into music management he oversaw The Beat, Stephen Duffy, The Dream Academy, Hugh Harris, General Public, XTC, Roger McGuinn from the Byrds and Jon Lord from Deep Purple. In a chance encounter in 1984, through his actress and model friend Kelly LeBrock, Tarquin met writer-director John Hughes on the set of Weird Science. He went on to become music supervisor on the John Hughes films Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Some Kind of Wonderful, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, She's Having A Baby, The Great Outdoors and Uncle Buck.  Running John Hughes' film company in the 1990s, Tarquin executive produced the films Curly Sue, Dutch, Only The Lonely, and Home Alone.  He has since produced both film and TV including the 1998 film Still Crazy, the TV series Crocodile Shoes with Jimmy Nail, the documentary series Cars That Rock with Brian Johnson, and the return of prison sitcom Porridge for the BBC. Tarquin currently manages Brian Johnson of AC/DC, and founding members of the Police, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland.  Johnny's talk with Tarquin covers his work curating Life Moves Pretty Fast, a boxset celebrating the music of John Hughes soundtracks, released on Demon Records in 2022.  They discuss Tarquin's time working alongside John Hughes and John Candy, his process of putting songs in front of John Hughes for consideration, and which composer he believes revolutionised the art of film scoring. Describing it as a "little elixir," the host emphasizes that Magic Mind is an all-natural product containing natural ingredients. They personally attest to its effectiveness in helping them manage their busy schedule, which includes tasks like video editing, scripting, recording, and marketing. The host explains that they incorporate Magic Mind into their daily routine, taking it like a shot, and find that it keeps them awake and provides mental clarity throughout the day. The host attributes the efficacy of Magic Mind to its unique slow release of caffeine. They draw a comparison to other common sources of caffeine, such as Coca-Cola or coffee, which provide a short-lived energy spike followed by a crash and increased exhaustion. By contrast, the host highlights that Magic Mind's sustained release of caffeine helps them maintain consistent energy levels without the need for additional boosts like chocolate or sugary drinks. They even mention that they have reduced their sugar and caffeine intake by opting for Magic Mind instead. To encourage listeners to try Magic Mind, the host presents a special promotion. They inform the audience that for a limited time, they can receive one month free when they subscribe for three months. The host provides a specific link to the Magic Mind website, magicmind.com/JanProtectOcean, and shares a code, PROTECT20, that grants an extra 20% off the subscription price. Urging listeners to seize this opportunity before the end of January, the host emphasizes the value of this offer. Overall, the host passionately promotes Magic Mind as a natural and effective solution for combating brain fog and tiredness, particularly for individuals with busy schedules or those involved in podcasting and science communication. In addition to promoting Magic Mind, the host also discusses the challenges of podcasting and the phenomenon known as "pod fading," where podcasts cease producing new episodes after only a few installments. Drawing a parallel to the rise and fall of blogging, the host acknowledges that while it may seem like everyone has a podcast nowadays, podcasting is far from easy. It demands significant effort and dedication. The host highlights the staggering number of podcasts in existence, with approximately 4 million currently available. However, they note that only around 430,000 of these podcasts are actively producing new content. This statistic underscores the intense competition within the podcasting industry. The host acknowledges that not all podcasts will attract a large audience, especially in the early stages. Nevertheless, they express gratitude for their engaged audience, who continue to listen and interact with the show. Sharing personal experiences, the host reveals the challenges they have faced while podcasting, including late nights, sleep deprivation, and the juggling act of raising two children while maintaining a regular job. They candidly admit to relying on caffeine to stay alert and put forth their best effort in producing the podcasts. The host recalls the difficulties encountered during the initial stages, such as recording episodes multiple times and making mistakes. Despite these obstacles, the host emphasizes the importance of consistency and delivering valuable information to their audience. In summary, the host's discussion sheds light on the hard work and dedication required in podcasting, as well as the significant number of podcasts that fade away after only a few episodes due to the fiercely competitive nature of the industry.

The English Beat—or, if you live in England, the Beat—was one of the key bands of the late ‘70s/ early ‘80s British ska-punk scene. Guitarist/songwriter Dave Wakeling sang most of this interracial, socially conscious group's songs, with Ranking Roger toasting, and he takes us inside the making of the band's brilliant debut album, I Just Can't Stop It (out in an expanded edition for Record Store Day Black Friday). Wakeling tells how the bass-driven “Mirror in the Bathroom” came together and digs into the band's relationship with Specials, the Beat's breakup, and songs such as “Save It for Later” and “Tenderness,” the latter from Wakeling's and Ranking Roger's subsequent band, General Public. Was there a rivalry between General Public and Fine Young Cannibals, the other Beat spinoff band? How did Wakeling and Roger wind up fronting their own versions of the Beat on either side of the Atlantic? (Photo by Bryan Kremkau.)

Summary of Findings It has been almost a year since FTX went bankrupt on November 11, 2022. Some of the ways that has impacted EA have been obvious, like the shuttering of the FTX Foundation, expected to be one of the biggest EA funders. But recent discussions show that the broader impact of the FTX scandal on EA isn't well understood, and that there is a desire for more empirical evidence on this topic. To that end, I have aggregated a variety of publicly available EA metrics to improve the evidence base. Unfortunately, these wide-ranging perspectives clearly show a broad-based and worrisome deterioration of EA activity in the aftermath of FTX.Previous attempts to quantify how FTX impacted EA have focused on surveys of members of the EA community, university students, the general public, and university group organizers. These surveys were conducted in the months following FTX's collapse. Also known as community science, citizen science is the active participation of amateurs or non-professional scientists in research. In recent years, it's grown in a number of fields, becoming bigger and more networked thanks to new technologies and connectivity. It's a link between professional researchers and volunteers who are interested in science and want to help it progress. Why would we want civilians doing important scientific research? Who are these amateur scientists? Which fields in particular are involved? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions ! So I was in Henley-on-Thames last week and there was this almost hidden bookshop next to a place called "The Ferret". (I kid you not.) High on a shelf there was an old leather-bound copy of Charles Dickens' lesser known Christmas stories. Not the long ones like "A Christmas Carol" or "The Chimes" or "The Haunted Man"; but short ones like "The Child's Story", "The Seven Poor Travellers", and "What Christmas Is As We Grow Older". What these stories all reveal -- for I started reading them on the airplane home -- is an explicit (tho' never didactic nor even artificial) dynamic of Christian Grace and One-Way Love. The author makes it clear in every tale that the core transaction of life in this world is the possibility of new beginning, new birth, resurrected hope, and empathic out-reaching love. Dickens always traces such dynamic beneficence specifically to Christ and His (Christmas) Goodness towards the lonely, the desperate, the poor, and even the rogues. In short, each story in this collection sets out the Whole Loaf. For many years -- many decades, it feels like sometimes -- I was perpetually mining my movies, my novels and my TV shows for implicit Christianity -- implicit Gospel, implicit Grace. And it can be found! But then one day I actually read Victor Hugo's Les Miserables and found the Whole Loaf in that celebrated novel. And then one day I read Leo Tolstoy's Resurrection and again: the Whole Loaf. And now I read Charles Dickens' short Christmas stories and again, Behold: the Whole Loaf. Part of the Loaf can be very good. Say, General Public (1980s), Nik Kershaw (ditto), Frankie Goes to Hollywood (ditto). But the Whole Loaf is better. And how the world needs it now. LUV U.

Fred Armisen loves ska. He's brought it up on multiple Tonight Show appearances. Portlandia famously did the Bart Ska-mpson skit (with guest Matt Groening), and he performed a ska song in one Saturday Night Live sketch (with Bill Hader and Katy Perry). So, we brought Fred on the podcast and discussed all things ska. He had a lot to say on the topic. We talked about his love for 2 Tone ska bands (The Specials, The Selecter, Madness, English Beat, Bad Manners, The Bodysnatchers). But we also talked about the US ska bands he got to know in the 80s and 90s while he played drums in Chicago punk band Trenchmouth. We talked about Fishbone, Skankin' Pickle, Gangster Fun, Slapstick, Let's Go Bowling and more. We also talk about ska in Latin America, which he learned about during his multiple trips to Santiago, Chile, while filming Los Espookys. We talk about the larger movement of punk/New Wave bands that dabbled with ska XTC, The Clash, The Members, Joe Jackson) or stemmed from ska bands (Fun Boy Three, Fine Young Cannibals, General Public) and we talk lovingly about Chicago's famous indie venue, Fireside Bowl. I also tell Fred about a rumor I heard that Cap'n' Jazz were the first band to play Fireside and he votes on whether it was true or not! We also talk about how dumb band fights can get, the influencing role that Alan Myers (Devo), David Barbarossa (Bow Wow Wow), Topper Headon (The Clash) and Clem Burke (Blondie) had on his drumming style, and he takes a moment to mourn the loss of Specials lead singer Terry Hall, which hit him hard.Plus, we decide the perfect number of bands to have on a bill. Sometime around 2016, I got the sense that we were entering into a new era of rock history: a period when the musicians we loved and admired began to die... Listen, there had been many deaths before then, but they seemed reasonably few and far between...but 2016 seems to have been the year—for me, anyone—when I realized that many of our most beloved musicians were getting older and starting to die off... That one year alone we lost David Bowie, Glen Frey of The Eagles, Prince, Leonard Cohen, and George Michael....we lost both Keith Emerson and Greg Lake of the prog band Emerson, Lake, and Palmer...Paul Kantner of Jefferson Starship...Maurice white of Earth, Wind, and Fire...Beatles producer George Martin...and that's only a partial list... In 2017, it was Gord Downie, Tom Petty, Gregg Allman, Chris Cornell, ac/dc's Malcolm Young, Walter Becker of Steely Dan, and Chuck Berry, among others.... The following year, we lost Dolores O'Riordan of The Cranberries, Mark E. Smith of the fall, Avicii, Aretha Franklin, and Pete Shelley of The Buzzcocks. Then in 2019, Keith Flint of The Prodigy, Mark Hollis of Talk Talk,  Ranking Roger of The English Beat and General Public, Ric Ocasek of The Cars, drumming legend Ginger Baker...I could go on, but you get the idea... The one thing that binds all humans on this planet together is that some day, we're all gonna shuffle off into the great beyond... No one is getting any younger...and over the next decade, we're going to lose some of the personalities who have always been with there for us over the last 30, 40, 50, or even 60 years... With that grim reality in mind, I think the time has come for an annual look back for those whom we've lost in the last 12 months as a way to recognize their contributions to the world of music...this is 2022 in memoriam...
