Having raked over the council elections in the last episode, Jemma and Marina spend this one dissecting the Mayoral results. It's a win for Andy Burnham, a loss for Andy Street, a win for Ben Houchen and, most thrillingly of all, a loss for Susan Hall. Susan, who spent her time campaigning telling Londoners that where they live is a hellscape of unparalleled proportions. Funnily enough, that strategy didn't work. In this Trawl, enjoy her entirely graceless speech and Khan's humorous one which references the biggest winner of all, Count Binface. The man who wanted to reduce the price of croissants and bring back Ceefax did very well and completely trounced the Britain First candidate who also suffered a huge bout of sour grapes. Fortunately, there was someone in the crowd to put him right. Mid-Atlantic - conversations about US, UK and world politics

Description:In this episode of Mid Atlantic, join host Roifield Brown in Birmingham and guests Leah Brown in Broadstairs, and Tonye Altrade in London, as they analyse the dramatic outcomes of the UK's 2024 local elections. Labour is celebrating its noteworthy victories in the West Midlands and London, while the Conservative Party grapples with significant losses, marking its worst performance since 1996. This episode delves into the implications of these results on national politics, the emerging strength of the Green Party, and the voter backlash against Labour over its stance on Gaza. We also explore the potential strategies and challenges facing each major party as they prepare for the upcoming general election.Show Notes:Labour's Celebrations: The hosts and guests discuss Labour's strategic victories and the boost this gives them as they look towards the upcoming general election. Labour's ability to capture key regions such as the West Midlands, with Richard Parker narrowly defeating incumbent Andy Street, is highlighted as a sign of growing support.Conservative Setbacks: The episode delves into the Conservative Party's significant losses, marking their worst performance since 1996. There's an in-depth analysis of the potential long-term implications for the party and the internal scrutiny on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's leadership. The discussion includes perspectives on how the Conservatives might strategize to recover from these losses and the notion of potential internal changes within the party.Rising Green and Struggling Reform Parties: The Green Party's notable gains are discussed as indicative of a shift in voter preferences towards more environmentally-focused agendas. Meanwhile, the nascent Reform Party's difficulties in establishing a foothold in the political landscape are also examined.Political Analysis by Guests: Leah and Tonye share their insights on the election results. Leah discusses the slim possibilities for optimism within the Conservative Party, despite the overall negative results, and Tonye offers a critique of Labour's position and its disconnect with certain voter bases, especially within Muslim communities affected by Labour's stance on Gaza.Voter Sentiment and Strategic Implications: The episode also explores broader voter sentiments and strategic shifts within major parties. The hosts and guests debate the potential for Labour to adjust its policies in response to the backlash over Gaza and consider the Conservatives' strategy to delay a general election in hopes of recuperating from their losses.Future of UK Politics: The discussion extends to the potential future scenarios for UK politics, including the role of independent candidates and the implications of voter turnout and new voting requirements. But despite his party loyalty, he hasn't shied away from criticising Westminster – especially when it comes to Levelling-up. He sat down with Hannah Fearn in The Bunker to discuss his priorities and time in office.  “For me, it wasn't about representing the party in Westminster. It was first and foremost about being an individual representative for the West Midlands.” – Andy Street “The truth is that Michael Gove and the Levelling-up Department have spent billions. But are we getting that message across? No.” – Andy Street “My relationship with Whitehall is positive, but immature. We make our proposals, and Whitehall will decide.” – Andy Street “Mayoral models are becoming popular because people want someone they can relate to, and with whom the buck stops.” – Andy Street www.patreon.com/bunkercast  Written and presented by Hannah Fearn. We close out our time with Richard Childress Racing with two final interviews featuring another one of the drivers of the No. 21 and its crew chief. Myatt Snider is back on the podcast to discuss his opportunity to run part-time with RCR and how the first few weeks have been. Snider discusses how he likes to approach a controversial situation, like after being upset with Noah Gragson in Las Vegas; what he’ll do to stay up to speed with RCR and RSS Racing (who he’s also driving for) when he’s not competing; Snider’s relationship with teammates Anthony Alfredo and Kaz Grala; if he took away from the Euro Series what he’d hoped and the lessons that will translate; how and why he’s also going to run with RSS Racing; if he feels he needs to win in the RCR car. Then met Andy Street, who is getting his chance to be a NASCAR Xfinity Series crew chief after never imagining he’d get such an opportunity. Street shares some history on his own racing career before getting in the door at RCR; some of his memories from previous roles with the company for Kevin Harvick and Clint Bowyer’s teams; why he believes more and more teams are turning to engineers to become crew chiefs; what the challenges will be working with multiple drivers; what the makeup of the 21 team will be after most of the guys graduated with Tyler Reddick and Randall Burnett; the interesting dynamic with Street’s wife also working at RCR; and what the expectations for the 21 team should be. Music created by Tony Monge. Lionel Racing is the market leader in the design, promotion and distribution of licensed die-cast race cars. Kainos provides digital technology solutions that enable companies to work smarter, faster, better. Their clients are predominantly in the Public, Healthcare and Financial Services sectors, and include well-known global organizations and large government departments. However, when I looked a little closer Kainos, I discovered that they are consistently recognized as one of the Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work For. The company is also passionate about giving something back to the communities that they live and work in. When I learned that Kainos’s latest expansion will be coming to Birmingham’s iconic Alpha Tower and that they are aligning with West Midlands Mayor Andy Street’s economic strategy, I felt compelled to find out more about their plans and the ambitious target for the region to create 29,000 digital and creative jobs by 2030. I invited Russell Sloan, Digital Services Director at Kainos onto my daily tech podcast to learn more about their work with West Midlands Mayor, Andy Street and plans to help Birmingham to become a global digital leader. From entry-level to experienced tech professionals, Kainos has been working to identify local talent across the whole spectrum, and for the coming year has sights set on hires with experience working in data, product, design, and engineering. Kainos has fostered strong relationships with local universities and schools as it builds the next generation of digital talent, with more than a quarter of its 80 Birmingham hires having graduated from local universities. A number of the students hired were identified through the Kainos Academy – a training and recruitment program offering a range of courses and work placement opportunities, which has helped over 5,000 people since its launch. We also discuss how also want to build on the success of their regular A.I.Camp and CodeCamp events to develop even stronger relationships with leading universities, local schools, government departments, and other businesses.
