La Crosse County Administrator Jane Klekamp in studio, a few months into the new job. We discussed a slew of things from what is a county admin., to bridge housing to a diversity, equity and inclusion consultant. Klekamp has worked within La Crosse County since 1989. She took over for Steve O'Malley mid-January, after he retired after 19 years as the county's first-ever administrator.  A big part of the conversation was about bridge housing for families and how the county is doing in that regard. Also spent some time on “fix the damn roads,” free jail phone calls, and declaring racism a public health crisis. The county hiring a recently hired a diversity, equity and inclusion consultant to help deal with that. Lastly we hit on some of the programs that were expanded during COVID that are coming to an end, a new south side meal site and potentially a fifth one in West Salem through the Aging-Disability Resource Center and using American Rescue Plan Act funding for solar panels on county buildings.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Wayne County Has A $3 Billion Road Funding Gap

We all want the roads in Michigan fixed. But the price? And paying more for it? That’s been a topic of hot debate among politicians and online commenters since Governor Gretchen Whitmer unveiled her plan to raise the gas tax by 45 cents a gallon to raise about $2.5 billion for the roads. But actually “Fixing the Damn Roads” is harder than a catchphrase. There’s a real problem on the ground, with large populations, high traffic volumes and aging infrastructure. The bill is adding up, and getting bigger the longer we don’t do anything. So to dive in on a very local level – specifically Wayne County, Michigan’s most populous county – we’re joined by Deputy Wayne County Executive Khalil Rahal and Director of Public Services Beverly Watts. We talk about previous road funding “fixes,” where technology really is at to fix roads, where Michigan really stands per capita on funding our roads and some of the restraints Michigan law puts on local cities and counties for raising money for their roads. It’s an interesting discussion. Then, we run down a few quick stories around town. Detroit is the fastest-growing in the nation for walkable places, but still, only 10 percent of the city fits that bill. A Detroit-based Unicorn startup, StockX, has a new round of funding and new CEO. And the old Motorama Motel in Ferndale is going to see new life. Thanks for listening to the Daily Detroit podcast!

Governor Gretchen Whitmer today released her first proposed budget before a joint meeting of House and Senate appropriations committee members, and she’s targeting investments to three problem areas for Michigan: roads, K-12 schools and contamination threats to drinking water resources. In a nutshell, the governor proposes to raise gasoline taxes in three installments of 15 cents to an extra 45 cents by October 2020. To pay for it, she’d undo some of the tax reforms championed by Gov. Rick Snyder, her predecessor. It’s a big pill to swallow, but there can be no doubting that Michigan has racked up a massive bill all these years of kicking the can down the road. On today’s show, we also run down some of her other proposals, including boosting funding for K-12 schools and creating a free community college program for Michigan high-school graduates. There’s news about a new demolition contract for Joe Louis Arena, with the wrecking ball arriving this spring. A new $30 million skilled-trades training center is planned in Detroit. Jer also gets nerdy about the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservancy, which will be closed until July, maybe even on weekends, due to some major reconstruction work. And a shout-out to Shelby Township’s Alena D’Amico who has made it on The Voice! Thanks for listening to Daily Detroit. Support the show through our Patreon - http://www.patreon.com/dailydetroit
