Today's Headlines: Kash Patel testified before Congress for four and a half hours, during which Republican Senator John Kennedy asked why he would "even get into bestiality" — a reference to the FBI's new hiring policy — and Kash responded that "we're not into bestiality" before claiming the policy change was to help trafficking victims, which is not what the policy said, making it one of the more surreal exchanges in recent congressional history. Kash also defended firing FBI agents for being "disloyal" to Trump by having investigated January 6th or Iranian threats. The Kennedy Center voted to close itself after another judge blocked Trump's name going on the building, Trump posted that it's closing for repairs that will only happen if his name goes on it, and the courts said no again. To add to that loss, Trump went on a Truth Social rant against Kavanaugh, Coney Barrett, and Gorsuch for the mail voting ruling while calling Alito and Thomas "legends both," sent Todd Blanche out to clean it up on TV, and is still pressuring states for voter data and planning to send agents to polling sites in swing counties. On the war beat, the Iran war has officially cost over $38 billion as of August 1st and is projected to add at least half a point to inflation in early 2027 even if it ended today — which it won't — diesel hit an all-time high of $6 a gallon after Iranian drones hit a Saudi pipeline, and the Fed is expected to raise interest rates for the first time since 2023. All that is probably why Thomas Massie introduced a resolution to impeach Pete Hegseth for illegally continuing the Iran war, which probably won't work but will force Republicans on record. Retired FBI behavioral analyst Robin Dreeke and psychotherapist Shavaun Scott join Tony Brueski to break down the online case against a man neither prosecutors nor Lindsay's own defense team has ever pointed at. On TikTok, testimony about a blood stain on a windowsill turned into a fully staged theory by the same night: Patrick pushing Lindsay out the window. New photos of his second wife got lined up next to old photos of Lindsay — same hair, same build — and a wedding three years after the deaths became proof of a plan. On a separate front, the case has split almost entirely by gender. Men on X want Lindsay punished as severely as possible and ignore the psychosis defense outright. Women online have gone the other way, branding Patrick a narcissist and repeatedly invoking Chris Watts by name. Patrick told the jury directly he wasn't married to a monster. The South Carolina Supreme Court did not only fault the clerk of court when it threw out Alex Murdaugh's convictions. The justices also flagged how much of the 2023 trial was spent on the money he stole. Tony Brueski takes your questions on what that means for the retrial with retired FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke.Prosecutors spent close to two weeks of the first trial on Murdaugh's financial crimes. That evidence was not tied to the murder charges directly. It was offered to establish motive: his thefts were about to be exposed, and the state argued the killings bought him sympathy and time.Judge Debra McCaslin now decides how much of that comes in the second time. She has told the attorneys she knows nothing about the first trial and wants them complete when they explain it to her.The state's newest filings run the other direction. Prosecutors moved to admit Murdaugh's own 2023 testimony at the retrial, renewed motions to exclude polygraph evidence and third-party guilt, requested a fresh review of digital evidence, and opposed the defense's push for independent DNA analysis.Listeners are asking a sharp question about the arithmetic. North Carolina Republican Thom Tillis is now threatening to block the nomination unless Blanche meets personally with survivors within a day or two. The committee splits 11 Republicans to 10 Democrats, so a single Republican no vote stops it from reaching the floor, and Tillis says the earliest vote is roughly two weeks out. John Cornyn has separately voiced concerns over the settlement fund. Hawk is skeptical either will follow through. Bensky's testimony covers the January release of Epstein files in which, despite assurances about protecting identities, hundreds of victims were reportedly named and some addresses left unredacted. Hawk contrasts Blanche making time for two days with Ghislaine Maxwell, and her subsequent transfer to a minimum security facility, against never responding to a survivor. The defense tried to show the jury Blair's 10-out-of-10 sketch of a man who looked nothing like Allen. Excluded. Tried to call an expert to challenge the bullet science the State told the jury was never wrong. Excluded. Tried to play the audio that would show what Allen sounded like while confessing in psychosis. Excluded. Tried to present an expert who would have explained the crime scene as a pagan ritual rather than a lone attack. Excluded. Tried to introduce evidence about suspects who practiced those rituals, were connected to the victim, and whose interviews were lost or destroyed. Excluded. The defense even tried to present evidence about the quality of the investigation itself. Excluded. What the jury did hear: a State phone expert who Googled whether water damage could mimic headphones during the trial and was allowed to testify about what he found on anonymous forums — over the defense's hearsay objection. According to the defense's appellate filings, every meaningful avenue for challenging the prosecution's narrative was closed by the trial court. Allen was convicted in November 2024 and sentenced to 130 years. The State's position on every exclusion is the same: harmless error. Today's Headlines: The Department of Homeland Security is threatening to cut customs staffing at major international airports in sanctuary cities like New York, LA, Chicago, and DC — which would affect not just tourism but cargo shipments and the broader economy — because DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin apparently thinks international trade can just reroute to Florida. Trump, meanwhile, said he's "in no hurry" to end the Iran war while also telling reporters he might skip his own son's destination wedding in the Bahamas because of "this thing called Iran," which is either a convenient excuse or the most relatable thing he's ever said. The Traitor Fund — formerly known as Trump's $1.776 billion slush fund — is getting wilder by the day: Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio wants $2-5 million, Mike Lindell is asking for $400 million, a January 6th rioter who compared herself to Jesus during sentencing wants $10 million, George Santos might file, and the couple who pointed guns at BLM protesters is reportedly interested. Acting AG Todd Blanche went to Congress to lobby Republicans not to block the fund — and offered to cut them in on it, specifically noting that senators whose records were secretly subpoenaed are eligible to file claims, which is a sentence that exists. The Senate responded by going home for a few weeks rather than dealing with it, which is technically a dereliction of their constitutional duty to approve funding, but here we are. Mortgage rates also hit a nine-month high this week at 6.51%, Trump is claiming he can build his DC arch without congressional approval, and a design commission approved the arch's look, which is one of many steps still required — Congress included, no matter what Donald says. On the Epstein files, Jeffrey Epstein's former personal assistant Sarah Kellen testified before the House Oversight Committee in a session described as deeply informative and genuinely harrowing — revealing she was recruited at 21, sexually and psychologically abused by Epstein for over a decade, and was "being paid in part to be raped." She also told the committee that the federal government included her name in Epstein's 2008 nonprosecution agreement without ever speaking to her, effectively branding her a criminal in a secret deal made with her own abuser. And finally, last night was Stephen Colbert's last show, which aired after this episode was recorded. The Kelsey Fitzsimmons trial reached its most significant moment when Fitzsimmons herself took the stand and testified in her own defense. The former North Andover police officer — charged with assault with a dangerous weapon after a colleague shot her while serving a restraining order — told the court she never pointed her weapon at anyone but herself. That she was in crisis. That she grabbed the gun and raised it to her own head. That she pulled the trigger twice. That in the ambulance afterward she kept saying she was an idiot for trying to kill herself with an unloaded gun, and kept removing her oxygen mask because she still wanted to die.The prosecution's cross-examination was pointed: as a trained officer, she agreed that a person in mental health crisis with guns present is a danger to everyone in the house. A judge weighing intent will weigh that answer.The defense also called Noonan's neighbor, who testified under oath that Noonan called Fitzsimmons a "f---ing whackjob" in a conversation where she questioned why no social worker was present. Fitzsimmons's mother testified she heard the shots from downstairs and never heard her daughter say anything.Both sides rested. The site visit the defense had fought to secure was cancelled without explanation after Fitzsimmons completed her testimony. Closing arguments are next, with a verdict potentially arriving the same day.This episode covers all of it — and asks the question sitting underneath the legal proceedings that no verdict will resolve: at least one officer walked into that house knowing Fitzsimmons had been involuntarily committed for postpartum depression, and there was still no mental health professional anywhere in that response. Not because of negligence. Because the system was never designed to put one there. That failure happened before anyone knocked on the door — and it put everyone inside in danger.A verdict is coming.
