Episode 47 Fireside Chat With Bill Baroni and Jesse Eisinger Recorded at our 2024 White-Collar Symposium held in Philadelphia last month, this special episode dives into the landscape of white-collar criminal prosecution from the perspectives of Bill Baroni and Jesse Eisinger. Both former podcast guests, Bill and Jesse provide Matt Adams with insight into their personal experiences with the presumption of innocence. They also share their views on how politics does — and does not — influence cases pursued by the Department of Justice. Bill is the former deputy executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey who was indicted and served prison time in connection with the infamous Bridgegate scandal before his conviction was unanimously overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court. Jesse, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, is the author of The Chickenshit Club: Why the Justice Department Fails to Prosecute Executives, which explores the DOJ's prosecutorial approach from the early 2000s Enron era into the Great Recession and the collapse of the financial markets.

Thanks!Chris Christie has had an interesting and eventful career in public life. He served as U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey from 2002 to 2008, then as Governor of the Garden State from 2010 to 2018. And he was a candidate for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, until his January withdrawal from the race.People tend to have strong opinions about Christie. Some respect his outspoken criticism of Donald Trump, which was the centerpiece of his presidential campaign. Others do not—perhaps because they support Trump, or perhaps because they can't forgive Christie for having been for Trump before he was against him. (In some ways Christie is his own harshest critic for this, admitting in his speech withdrawing from the race that he endorsed Trump because he put personal ambition over what he knew was right.)I'm not a neutral observer when it comes to Chris Christie. I worked for him as an assistant U.S. attorney from 2003 to 2006, and I like and respect him a great deal. As we discuss at the start of this podcast episode, I'm especially grateful for how he dealt with me in the wake of the scandal over my very first blog, Underneath Their Robes. But that didn't stop me from asking him difficult questions on the podcast, including his biggest regrets—yes, he talks about Bridgegate—and whom he might vote for in the presidential election. We also review his legal career, including his advice for law students and his three biggest cases as U.S. Attorney.Congratulations to Governor Christie on his latest book—What Would Reagan Do? Life Lessons from the Last Great President, which we discuss on the podcast—and thanks to him for both his past kindness and willingness to join me today.Show Notes:* Chris Christie bio, Christie 55 Solutions* What Would Reagan Do? On Friday's Mark Levin Show, Chris Christie has done nothing for the United States or to fight cancel culture or protect children from the Marxist Democrat ideology invading elementary schools. He has no legacy in New Jersey except sky-high taxes, crime, and Bridgegate, and now he wants to clear the way for President Biden to win in 2024. The Democrat party hates America today like it has hated America before, and those of us who love this country and don't want to see it turned into a third-world centralized state won't be distracted by Kamala Harris or phony issues. America is unraveling and our founding and history are under assault; individualism is being substituted for group-ism and capitalism is being devoured by economic socialism. We cannot allow Democrats to do this to us and allow people like Christie to play grafter politics while our country is dying before our eyes. Also, the Hunter Biden laptop alone is enough to warrant an impeachment inquiry of Joe Biden, which is why the FBI and social media covered it up at the request of the Biden's. The brave IRS whistleblowers uncovering the corruption of the Biden Administration and special treatment toward Hunter Biden should be commended for doing what weak Republicans in Congress can't. There is no noise in the Republican senate about an impeachment inquiry because they are afraid of uncovering evidence and leading to an impeachment of Biden, which they don't want to bring because they don't have the votes. The Republican party is not out to destroy or transform America, but it is filled with quislings that wittingly or unwittingly tolerate and contribute to the Marxist Democrat agenda. Next, The College Board's AP curriculum for African American history claims that slaves learned valuable skills while they were enslaved, which is what Florida's curriculum says as well, but Kamala Harris and others are attacking Florida and Ron DeSantis. The Biden Administration is re-segregating the country through executive order, and to them, it is OK because they call it progressive and liberal. Later, Democrats will keep pushing climate change as a way to gain more control for the government and less liberty for citizens, even though they cannot point to any scientific data to back their apocalyptic claims. Now we get more hyperbole calling this the era of global boiling because they want an era of government tyranny. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

This vacation week is all about the “throwbacks.” Well, two shows are about it, anyway. But as you know, 60/40 is what pollsters call a “statistical dead heat.” Anyway, like Tuesday, this Thursday's re-run is about taking us back to a time when we didn't yet know just how bad TFG was going to make things. We had an inkling. We just… didn't think he'd get the chance. Remember those days? Well, we recorded them: David Waldman brings us up-to-date on all of the news and politics — no copying! The RNC convention tonight should feature Donald and Melania's cover of “Something Stupid”. (But probably won't.) Instead, it will be another night of terror. A Donald Trump minion falls on her sword for Melania. How Melania Trump's speech veered off course and caused an uproar. Greg Dworkin rounds up the polling. So, who's going to be president? And, who's going to win the presidency? Hillary Clinton is the star of the Republican convention. Even Trump's nomination doesn't wow the crowd like Clinton. Only Hillary Clinton interests them. Their priority is to punish a Clinton. After the convention, immigration, guns and abortion will be wedge issues. With no alternative, a Gop policy leader comes to terms with Trump. You can elect Trump, but you can't make him president. Joan McCarter emerges from the convention hell-hole to talk for a while. Joan picks Tiffany as the best Trump, the sons tying for creepiest. It is a close contest. Follow Joan back into the hell-hole on the Daily Kos RNC open thread for the latest! Chris Christie's Kangaroo Court is a glimpse of a Trumpian future. With Trump's help, NJ Republicans pay Bridgegate legal fees. Christie says Trump could purge the government of Obama appointees. Megyn Kelly steps forward with allegations against Roger Ailes, so it might be time for him to pack up his $40,000,000 and head out the door. Ryan Bundy braids 15 feet of bedsheets, 213 feet short of his goal.

What have we learned that we didn't know already? And how effective are they proving to be?“Not Since the Sultans of Swing.” A dire situation is once again brewing over the straits of Taiwan, as China and the United States rattled sabers at the regional Shangri-La Dialogue as the former rejected the Taiwan Strait's status as international waters. And they received an unlikely assist from Ukrainian President Volodmyr Zelensky, who sent in a video message calling for the region to defend Taiwan from possible Chinese aggression. Their loss devastated everyone who knew them, and the attack that took their lives had geopolitical ripple effects that are evident still today. The personal example of Matt and Sara continues to inspire those who knew them.  In this special two-part series of My Teacher Podcast, Rabbi Ed Bernstein is joined in conversation by Mike Kelly, an award-winning journalist and columnist for The (Bergen) Record of New Jersey and the USA Today Network, who did extensive reporting on this attack. In Episode 11, Ed interviewed Mike on the arc of his career and his reporting on this story that led to his acclaimed book, The Bus on Jaffa Road. In this work, Mike chronicles a single act of terrorism and what happened as the American families of the victims attempted to seek justice through U.S. courts. The book, which was published in 2014, has been described by reviewers as “destined to become a literary classic”, “non-fiction at its very best” and a “masterpiece” that “goes deep below the rhetoric on the ‘war on terror'.” In this episode, Mike interviews Ed on his relationship with Matt and Sara and their legacy as recorded in part in the book that Ed edited: Love Finer Than Wine: The Writings of Matthew Eisenfeld and Sara Duker. The book was recognized as a 2016 National Jewish Book Awards Finalist in the category of anthologies and collections. It received  coverage in various publications including The Forward, Florida Sun-Sentinel, The Jewish Ledger of West Hartford and the Cleveland Jewish News. Here's a photo of Ed editing the JTS Memorial Volume that would eventually become Love Finer Than Wine.  Mike Kelly is the author of many prize-winning projects and columns. Prior to  The Bus on Jaffa Road, he wrote two other non-fiction books. His first book, Color Lines: The Troubled Dreams of Racial Harmony in an American Town, published in 1995, tells the story of one town's struggles to achieve racial harmony after a white police officer shot and killed an African-American teenager. The Washington Post called the book “American journalism at its best.”  His second book, Fresh Jersey: Stories from an Altered State, a collection of his columns about New Jersey, published in 2000, was described as “wonderful, touching, funny, perceptive” by best-selling novelist Mary Higgins Clark. Mike Kelly's newspaper journalism has taken him to homeless colonies, drug dens, prisons and courtrooms as well as assignments in Iraq, Africa, Cuba, Malaysia, Israel (including the West Bank and Gaza) and Northern Ireland. OK, you caught us. The Christie Tracker Podcast actually wrapped up back in November of 2016 - after the Bridgegate trial of former Christie staffer, Bridget Anne Kelly and former Deputy Executive Director of the Port Authority, Bill Baroni. But because Tuesday, January 16th marks the last day in office for New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, we had to temporarily reemerge. We bribed them with hot coffee and free EZ Pass for a month, so WNYC's Matt Katz and Nancy Solomon came back for one more round on the podcast. They join host David Furst for a last look back on the Gov's two terms in office. Chris Christie dominated the state's political stage like no other. He claims New Jersey is "much, much better than it was eight years ago." But he finishes his term with the lowest approval rating of any governor in state history and may be remembered more for Bridgegate, Beachgate and endorsing Donald Trump than anything else. Matt and Nancy highlight some of the moments that helped shape his legacy. Nancy says, "To me, it's all about how good of a communicator he is and how personable he is... and then all of the ways that he perverted our state government for his own purposes." And while they were at it, the crew selected a few of their favorite episodes of the Christie Tracker Podcast: MATT's PICK: Christie's Bold Defense of Muslim-Americans (Four Years Ago) On this show from November of 2015, we turned back the clock to a time well before the presidential primaries, when Gov. Christie was letting loose with his bold support for a Muslim-American judge. NANCY's PICK: Chris Christie Through the Looking Glass Things get curious. The man who deleted texts during Bridgegate investigation gets offended when Hillary Clinton's emails are erased. Matt picks apart every word of the governor's recent statements. And what does Alice in Wonderland have to do with Chris Christie? All will be explained in this episode from August 26, 2015. DAVID's pick: Chris Christie: The Springsteen Tracker If you're with the Gov at a Bruce show, don't even think about leaving early. Back in October of 2015, Matt explained Christie's Springsteen legendary obsession.

The Bridgegate trial is done. Governor Christie is heading into his last year in office. And the Christie Tracker Podcast is closing up shop. Before we go, our resident Bridgegate-ologists, WNYC's Matt Katz and Andrea Bernstein, join us to answer your questions. Former Christie associates Bridget Kelly and Bill Baroni plan to appeal their guilty verdicts. But the Gov is certainly ready to move on. Speaking about Bridgegate on NJ 101.5's Ask The Governor show this week he said, "I'm DONE with this... the people of New Jersey are done with it, it's over. And I know that it won't allow for the liberal media in this state to continue to beat on the Republican governor. But they'll find something else to do." Speaking with host David Furst, Matt Katz says, "Never has the governor specifically addressed those allegations that came up in the trial and told us what is, exactly, wrong with them. He's just given blanket denials." WNYC's Matt Katz and Andrea Bernstein (Photo: Arun Venugopal)

The Trial is done. The guilty verdicts are in. So in an effort to turn the page on this chaotic chapter in New Jersey's history, we present Bridgegatepalooza - - a wrap-up of the political retribution scheme that derailed the rising star of the national Republican party, and ended – we thought – the political future of Chris Christie. Host David Furst is joined by a group of reporters who covered the Bridgegate saga as it unfolded. Shawn Boburg, formerly with the Record now with the Washington Post… Heather Haddon and Ted Mann with the Wall Street Journal... Tom Moran, the Star-Ledger's Editorial Page Editor... and of course, WNYC's Andrea Bernstein and Matt Katz. Looking back after the trial, Ted Mann says, "These are people who didn't think they were gonna get caught. And when they didn't think they were gonna get caught, they weren't weeping and they weren't appealing to you to consider their backgrounds in public service… They were speaking very nastily about their fellow human beings and they were doing things that they would never justify in the light of day."

After seven weeks, the Bridgegate trial is done and the verdicts are in. Former Chris Christie staffer, Bridget Anne Kelly and Bill Baroni, the former Deputy Executive Director of the Port Authority, were found guilty on all counts. Both sides are vowing to appeal. And even though testimony during the trial indicated otherwise, Governor Christie says the jury confirmed everything he has said all along – that he knew nothing about a plot to close lanes at the George Washington Bridge. Meanwhile, the governor has a Nov. 23rd court date to deal with a citizen's complaint in Bergen County, accusing him of misconduct. And the possibility of a new legislative investigation into Bridgegate has been raised. WNYC's Matt Katz and Andrea Bernstein join us to reflect on the verdicts and help us get a handle on where this is heading. The governor appeared on CBS This Morning in an attempt to minimize the damage. But speaking with host David Furst, Matt Katz says "There are four high level people - we should remember this - four high level people who have been convicted of federal crimes who served… high up in this administration."

Now in week 7, the Bridgegate trial is in the hands of the jury. And so as we wait for verdicts for former Christie staffer Bridget Kelly and former Port Authority appointee Bill Baroni, WNYC's Andrea Bernstein and Matt Katz join us with a few closing arguments of their own. There were a lot of details and characters for the jury to keep track of over the last 6 weeks of testimony. Speaking with host David Furst, Matt and Andrea detail the drama that played out in court when juror questions were presented to the judge. At one point, tempers flared over a sensitive question. Judge Wigenton ruled that regardless of motive, Kelly and Baroni could be guilty of conspiracy. Matt Katz says that resulted in Bridget Kelly's attorney "throwing his head back and slumping in his chair" and telling the judge that she was directing a verdict of guilty.

Former Christie staffer Bridget Kelly finally hit the stand in week 6 of the Bridgegate Trial. Governor Christie has always maintained that he had no knowledge about the plan - prior to or during the lane closures at the George Washington Bridge. Kelly testified that she told him once before and twice during the 5-day shutdown. She even offered up a counter explanation for her infamous "Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee" email. And Kelly testified that she was afraid of the governor. She says, "I was gun shy. I was scared. But he would then turn it on, and be charming. It was a confusing, frightening time." WNYC's Matt Katz and Andrea Bernstein and the Star-Ledger's Tom Moran join us for a full breakdown of week 6. And Andrea poses an interesting question. Did this whole thing spiral out of control because Bridget Kelly wanted to sit with the cool kids? Andrea says that Kelly may have been motivated by a desire to be accepted by Christie's inner circle. Tom adds, "She seems like someone who really wants to be included in the club and she's just on the outer edge of it and almost in there. And a lot of the stuff she does it to ingratiate herself with them." Matt takes it one step further: "This is a weakness that all of these characters had."

Speaking with host David Furst, Matt says Baroni's 'basic argument was that David Wildstein, the admitted co-conspirator, was actually the one that called the shots in closing these lanes.'
