The return of friend of the show Darin Murphy (a man who portrayed John Lennon on Broadway, and played with Denny Laine, Todd Rundgren, Joey Molland, Micky Dolenz and more!) He pojoins us to discuss Disc Five of the Mind Games Box, the raw studio mixes. Sean gives us plenty of material to consider, and we discuss how this album would influence artists as diverse as Meat Loaf, Tom Petty and possibly the Beats headphones!

Sam Whiles (Paul or Nothing) steps in as we discuss the life, loves and trousers of Denny Laine. Also joining is Darin Murphy (who gets a few more words in than Roger McGough, the man who actually knew the Rutles). Merry Happy Holidays to all.
Friend of the show Darin Murphy returns to chat with us about the "Number Nine Orchestra" (and Austin's annual Lennon Birthday show), touring with Todd Rundgren, Christopher Cross, Denny Laine, Joey Molland and others, and Revolver past, present and future!

Darin Murphy joins us for Days 15-17. The deadlines for Ringo and Glyn Johns draw ever closer as January comes to end. The Beatles do not quite manage a breakthrough, but they do start to get some numbers down for the album, while the crew scrambles for a replacement ending for the film now that Primrose Hill is no longer possible.
Entre 1996 y 2002, escuchamos: MIKE VIOLA AND THE CANDY BUTCHERS - "FALLING INTO PLACE" ("FALLING INTO PLACE", 1999) / DARIN MURPHY - "DON'T LOOK AT ME" ("SOLITARIUM, 1999) / DOLEFUL LIONS - "GULLIVER DIVER" ("MOTEL SWIM", 1998) / XAVIER ESCUTIA - "SOMETIMES I DREAM" ("SISTER REINCARNATION", 1996) / BECK - "LAZY FLIES" ("MUTATIONS", 1998) / ELGIN PARK - "PATIENCE" ("ELGIN PARK", 2000) / BRENDAN BENSON - "METARIE" ("LAPALCO", 2002) / ERIC MATTHEWS - "THE PLEASANT KIND" ("THE LATENESS OF THE HOUR", 1997) / JASON FALKNER - "MY LUCKY DAY" ("CAN YOU STILL FEEL?", 1999) / NEGRO PROBLEM - "PETER JENNINGS" ("JOYS & CONCERNS", 1999) / XTC - "STANDING IN FOR JOE" ("WASP STAR - APPLE VENUS VOL.2", 2000) / WILCO - "NOTHING'SEVERGONNASTANDINMYWAY(AGAIN)" ("SUMMERTEETH", 1999) / WATTS - "YOU" ("FLASH!", 1998) / Escuchar audio
Today, we lost a beloved member of the Austin music scene. Billy Wilson from Latin At Heart lost his battle with cancer. My heart goes out to his family and close friends. If you knew Billy, you knew he was driven to make things happen for Latin At Heart and he was an extremely supportive music fan. Billy finally got to record one of his songs with a producer in a studio like he had always wanted. His song, "We Ran To" produced by my dear friend, Darin Murphy came out a couple of weeks ago and got some spins on the radio. That was Billy's dream. I'm glad he got to realize it. Rest in peace, Billy. You'll be missed. Please enjoy our conversation from April 27, 2020
A classic WTWF that has always been among the favorites of Lonnie Pena and myself. Darin Murphy sat down behind a drum kit and demonstrated some of Ringo Starr's drum stylings and how Ringo's playing evolved through the years.
Part two of our visit with friend of the show Darin Murphy covering the Demos and Evolution documentaries from the John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band Ultimate Collection. More of the three of us wandering around Beatles topics, while managing to talk about the business of demoing new songs for friends and family, and then turning those demos into the finished recordings we are all familiar with? How well is that process represented in this box?
The second part of Darin Murphy's first visit with WTWF from 2018. New episode coming on schedule!
Darin Murphy returns for this week and next. This week we catch up, wander through the discs and start considering the set from the perspective of a singer, songwriter and performer. What surprised us in the demos, and do we think the evolution documentaries are a true representation of John, Yoko and friends in the studio working toward the finished singles (and "Mother")
WTWF classic. The first appearance of friend of the show Darin Murphy (2005's Lennon: The Musical, Cotton Mather, Trish and Darin). Originally released 2018.
2019 was a busy year for the former Beatles. "Above Us Only Sky" premiered on Netflix in the United States (following a late 2018 UK premiere). Ringo Starr toured across Japan and North America celebrating thirty years of the All-Starr Band. He then followed that up with a new studio album, possibly his final full length album. Paul McCartney released several additional songs from "Egypt Station", put out a children's book (and a book of Linda's polaroids), and also toured the world. We discuss these milestones, look back on shows from the past year and look forward to what might be coming next.
The conclusion of my talk with renowned Beatles author David Bedford recorded in Liverpool in July. David and I continue the Pete Best vs Ringo Starr drumming discussion as well as more details from David’s books (including his detective novel!). David also attempts to explain the complex legal shenanigans around the Beatles’ initial management contract and the ‘sacking’ of Pete Best. This episode also includes some fantastic clips of drummer Darin Murphy demonstrating and detailing the drumming styles of Pete and Ringo, originally featured on the recommended podcast 'When They Was Fab'. Following response to our previous Harry Nilsson discussion, we do a deeper dive on the relationship between the individual Beatles and Nilsson, centering on the sessions from spring and summer 1974 that eventually became the "Pussy Cats" album. Austin-based musician Darin Murphy (Skyrocket, Cotton Mather) joins in on the fun.
Another year over. A new one just begun. A look back at 2018, the people and things that went before from the perspective of both the Beatle world and the show. We review our show guests from the past year (missed any? They are all still available!), the solo and band releases, and other memories both "New" and old.
Darin Murphy joins us again as we continue our look at the remixes of sides 3+4 of the White album. There can be no doubt the new mixes are both cleaner and shinier, but how often do they equal or better the originals? Perhaps it does not matter, since the new mixes will supplement, not replace the original mono and stereo.
Darin Murphy joins us again as we move onto a track-by-track look at the remix, comparing the mono, stereo and 2018 mixes where appropriate. Compare our contemporary views with classic clips from Paul McCartney's promotional interview on Radio Luxembourg from November 20, 1968 where he did much the same thing. Stay tuned, as our look at sides 3+4 will be out sooner than you might think!
The WTWF look at the Giles Martin remix of the White album begins here. Musician, Producer and Actor Darin Murphy (from Skyrocket!, Cotton Mather and the summer of...) joins us again for a few weeks, as we break down the intricacies of going back to the source material and rebuilding a classic record. Is it possible to simultaneously honor the original mix, and to freshen the sound for modern ears. If so, with "The Beatles," has Giles Martin been successful, and to what degree?
In this episode, Scotty talks with Darin Murphy from Creative Artist Agency (CAA) in Nashville, TN about the role of booking agents, or talent agents, in the music industry.
Forty-seven years ago (August 1, 1971), George Harrison and Ravi Shankar turned the world's attention to the issues in Bangladesh. The shows were organised to raise international awareness and fund relief efforts for refugees from East Pakistan, following the Bangladesh Liberation War-related genocide. The concerts spawned a bestselling live album and film that continue to raise funds for children in need to this day. We discuss the show with our guest Darin Murphy, and how he was involved in recreating the concert live on stage in Austin, Texas for its 35th (and 40th) anniversaries.
The summer of Darin Murphy continues! The topic this week, the Beatles as a cover band. Liverpool, Hamburg, the BBC sessions, and even EMI through "Beatles For Sale" were an outlet for the band to perform their favorite songs from others (ranging from fifties roots rock and R&B through to then-current A- and B-sides). We discuss the songs they chose to cover, and how that material fit with the originals as the Lennon/McCartney songwriting team moved into high gear.
Happy 76th Birthday to Sir Paul McCartney! A very special episode as we continue our visit with Darin Murphy. This week, he gets behind the kit and spends an hour demonstrating and discussing the finer points of Ringo's drumming technique. Along the way we discuss why Ringo was not just perfect for the band, but essential to Beatlemania and beyond. Other topics include Pete Best and the "atom beat," the versatility of Ringo's snare, cymbals and hi-hat (open/half-open/closed), and finally "the quickest right hand in the West."
The summer of Darin Murphy continues! Part two of our discussion goes down Beatles-oriented shows Darin has been involved in around Houston and Austin, and the musicians that helped bring various visions to life. The show closes with some impression work, and how a bit of fun turned into an some work for record producer Ken Scott (Magical Mystery Tour, the White Album) that got noticed by Apple Corps. Stick around - Next week, a very special show!
Darin Murphy has been studying and recreating the music of the Beatles for over thirty years. He honed his musical and production skills in a series of "Fab Fourgeries", playing all the parts, producing, engineering and mastering (without the help of digital manipulation) half a dozen Beatles songs. Murphy is known for his original music, a popular regional band with his sister, drumming for Robert Harrison-led "Cotton Mather", musical director and multi-instrumentalist for Texas party powerhouse SKYROCKET!, and a stint (approved by Yoko Ono) as understudy and one of the Lennons in Broadway musical "Lennon." Now he joins WTWF for several shows in the following weeks and months in what we are referring to as "The summer of Darin Murphy."
Oh you guys. Sometimes I wish I were you. Then I wouldn’t know about some of the “AMAZING” on the fly stuff we occasionally pull, and I would go into listening to the show with even wider eyes (Cause face it, this show is like Jaws/Star Wars circa mid-70’s, albeit wrapped up in all the Beatles albums combined). We were just about out of that damn garage, and then Ryan showed up…let me back up a bit. I picked the record this week, and it’s “The Kinks are The Village Green Preservation Society” by…wait for it…The Kinks (wouldn’t it have been wonderful if I dropped in C and C Music Factory right there?). I love the British Invasion, I think the Beatles were the most confounding and amazing band ever, most of my all time favorite bands and records hail from The British Isles…but somehow the Kinks had mostly fallen off of my radar. And that’s not for lack of people nudging me toward them (looking at you Darin Murphy). Long story short, I finally understood all of the comparisons to Blur- Parklife I’ve heard over the years. Because of a 2am text I had received a few nights before taping, I knew Ryan was a fan of this one. Which is why when I walked into Mark’s garage and Ryan wasn’t there I was all sad-faced and shit. Turns out, if you are playing with your dog and accidentally scratch your cornea in 2 places, and you are in so much pain you have to move the recording of your podcast to the following day cause you have to go to the doctor…not everybody can make the re-schedule the next day. Ryan had to work that night, and nobody bothered to tell me-sad trombone-. Well lucky for us, our guest for the night, Infamous Music Journalist Chad Swiatecki, did a most admirable fill-in. Sadly, Ryan really liked the record and Chad did not, so I regret not having them in the same room. I’m not above throwing meat to the wolves. Buy "Village Green Preservation Society" on Amazon ### A Few Minutes With ### For “A Few Minutes With”, we watched Kip Winger do some logic gymnastics and bass twirling while he struggling with his attraction for a 17 year old (Now a woman of 45 as we point out)…or actually, there’s no struggle, he straight up admits he’s an admirer of underage women in the song. Oh, and then Ryan showed up right as we were all getting in our cars to go home, so we fired the whole thing back up, and did another show in fast forward as a postscript. I have yet to have heard it, but I’m cringing a little because by that time I might have had a few beers… We’re loving all of the discussion with you guys, please keep the comments and messages and e-mails coming! We have yet to include a listener pick for one of our shows, but we will; we talk about it a lot…we’re just waiting for a few to pick from. Is it fair to say I’ll be doing this again in a week. Yes. Hope to see you then,
