W/C 4th May 2026There are so few opportunities to use this particular song as an episode title (this is certainly the first since I started TFM) that I snatched at it, without hesitation.As a guitar player as was well aware of Gary Moore, and whilst not a card-carrying devotee, I was certainly more than aware of the range and depth of his work. I got to see him play live once, at the Montreux Jazz Festival in July 2010, and he certainly lived up to his reputation.What I didn't know at the time was that it would be his last ever recorded performance, as he would die less than a year later in Estepona, he was 58. Hear the second edition of a new segment titled “40 Indiana guitar pioneers that every Hoosier should know.” Over the next year, we'll be sharing the music and history of Indiana guitarists who made notable contributions to music. Some of these musicians are world-famous; some you may not have heard of. This is not a ranked list, and it won't be presented in any particular order. On this edition, learn about the Gary, Indiana guitarist Donald Kinsey, who played with artists including Bob Marley, Albert King and Peter Tosh. Donald Kinsey was born May 12, 1953, in Gary. He was one of three sons of Lester “Big Daddy” Kinsey, a respected Chicago blues guitarist, singer, and harmonica player who migrated from Mississippi to Gary in the mid-20th century. Music was part of Donald's life from an early age. He began playing guitar at five years old, learning chords from his father and performing in church and at local gigs. By his early teens, he had earned the nickname “B.B. King Jr.” In 1972, Donald's professional career took a major leap when he was recruited to play with Albert King, one of the most influential blues guitarists of all time. Kinsey toured extensively with King, appearing at major festivals including Wattstax and the Montreux Jazz Festival. He also recorded several albums with King, including I Wanna Get Funky and Blues at Sunrise. This was a formative period that helped Kinsey refine his technique and stage presence while reaching audiences beyond the Midwest club circuit. In the mid-1970s, Kinsey left the Albert King band to join the psychedelic rock group White Lightnin'. The band's self-titled debut album was released by Island Records in 1975. Kinsey's connection to Island Records would prove significant. The label was co-founded in Jamaica by Chris Blackwell in 1959, and Blackwell introduced Kinsey to a rising young star on the label: Bob Marley. Kinsey's career soon took an unexpected turn toward reggae. From 1975 to 1976 he toured with Bob Marley and the Wailers, appearing on Marley's classic 1976 album Rastaman Vibration and numerous live recordings. Kinsey also worked extensively with Peter Tosh, contributing to several landmark albums including Legalize It, Equal Rights, Bush Doctor, and Mama Africa. He also recorded with Burning Spear, playing guitar on the albums Dry & Heavy and Marcus' Children. Kinsey was with Marley during one of the most harrowing moments in reggae history—the attempted assassination of Marley in Kingston in December 1976, when gunmen opened fire at Marley's home. After Marley's death in 1981, Kinsey recorded a tribute titled “Song for Bob.” In 1984, Kinsey reunited with his brothers Ralph and Kenneth and their father Lester to form The Kinsey Report, a band blending electric blues, rock, and roots music. The group recorded a series of albums beginning with Edge of the City in 1987 and became known for its powerful live performances, earning critical acclaim on the blues circuit and touring across the United States and internationally. Kinsey remained active into the 2020s, performing with both the Kinsey Report and the Wailers band. Donald Kinsey died February 6, 2024, in Merrillville at age 70, just weeks after the death of his older brother Ralph.

Die 1983 in Bern geborene Künstlerin Sophie Hunger wuchs am Fuße des Gurtens auf, dem Hausberg ihrer Geburtsstadt. Aber nicht nur dort, es ging viel hin und her in ihrer Kindheit und Jugend, London, Bonn, später Teheran und zwischendurch eben die Schweiz. Mit 10 spielte sie auf dem Klavier ihre ersten eigenen Songs, Musik wird jetzt zur festen Begleiterin. Nach der Matura macht sich Sophie auf die Suche, studiert mal dies, mal das, bricht immer wieder ab, singt in verschiedenen Bands und arbeitet in der Gastronomie, bis sie 2006 im Eigenvertrieb ihre erste CD veröffentlicht. Endlich kommt dieser Schub und diese lang ersehnte Bestätigung, zukünftig als Musikerin leben zu wollen und auch zu können. Wenig später performt sie als Vorband des höchst erfolgreichen Stephan Eicher im Pariser Bataclan und tritt beim Montreux Jazz Festival auf. Seitdem gilt die zweifache Mutter, Sängerin, Songwriterin, Filmkomponistin und nun auch Romanautorin Sophie Hunger als eine der innovativsten und außergewöhnlichsten Künstlerinnen Europas. With an unwavering dedication to his craft, Arli's approach to music serves as a transformative force that resonates both on and off the screen. As a screen composer, Arli has worked on a wide range of films, including Sam Kelly's gang movie 'Savage', winning the 2021 APRA Best Original Music in a Feature Film Award. In 2024, he collaborated with Tiki Taane to create the score to the historical drama in Te Reo Māori 'Ka Whawhai Tonu - Struggle Without End' directed by Mike Jonathan, with the theme song 'Hold On To The Dream' featuring Louis Baker, released as a single. Arli composed the original score for NZ film 'The Mountain' (2024), with music by Troy Kingi, directed by Rachel House and produced by Piki Films and Sandy Lane Productions. In 2023, he scored 'Stylebender' a documentary directed by Zoë McIntosh about Nigerian - New Zealand mixed martial artist Israel Adesanya, which was premiered at Tribeca Film Festival. His signature sound can be heard on the 36th America's Cup theme, the opening titles of the FIFA Women's World Cup, The All Blacks Experience at SkyCity, and in the Auckland Art Gallery's filmic exhibition Te Mata. As a solo artist, Arli is also prolific, with his fifth solo album coming out on Bigpop Records, in addition to creating a new collaborative album with renowned composer Rhian Sheehan due out in 2024. Arli's production work on Ngatapa Black's album 'I Muri Ahiahi' earned a nomination for Māori Album of the Year at the Aotearoa Music Awards, and he has performed at MoMA New York and the Montreux Jazz Festival, among other international festivals. Originally from Israel, Arli was a member of the groundbreaking White Flag Project, a pioneering crossover band uniting Palestinian and Israeli musicians. Under the mentorship of platinum-selling English record producer Mark Smulian, he was urged to 'find the back door of the electric guitar sound', which marked the beginning of Arli's journey in developing his sonic identity. In 2009, Arli moved to Aotearoa New Zealand, where he continued to develop his innovative approach to music and began exploring the synergy between composition and visual storytelling.

AKI NAKAMURA began his professional journey as a quantum chemist, having graduated from the Department of Applied Chemistry at Yokohama National University. However, it wasn't long until he turned to the shakuhachi for his future career. Aki studied under numerous shakuhachi masters, including Katsuya Yokohama. He then went on to study composition and jazz theory at Berklee College of Music, USA, graduating summa cum laude. He finished his tertiary studies at the New England Conservatory of Music as a scholarship student in the Master of Music Composition and the Third Stream program. His compositions are diverse and include orchestral music, choral music, chamber music, big band music, and traditional Japanese music. He has established a performance method that makes full use of overtones, multiphonics, the traditional Japanese breathing technique of ‘Missoku', and his own originally developed method of ```, which involves exhaling and inhaling at the same time. While staying true to the traditions of the Komusō monks, collecting, analysing, and performing their repertoire, he is also active as a performer of rock, jazz and classical music. He has performed in more than 150 cities in over 40 countries, at events and venues such as the Montreux Jazz Festival, Queen Elizabeth Hall (London), the Lincoln Center (New York), Blue Note (New York), the Kennedy Center (Washington DC), the Berlin Philharmonic Hall, the Polish National Opera, under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Japan Foundation. Tigran Hamasyan is considered one of the most remarkable and distinctive jazz-meets-rock pianists/composers of his generation. A piano virtuoso with groove power, Hamasyan seamlessly fuses potent jazz improvisation and progressive rock with the rich folkloric music of his native Armenia. Born in Gyumri, Armenia, in 1987, his musical journey began in his childhood home, where he was exposed to a diverse array of musical influences leading to him playing piano at the age of three, performing in festivals and competitions by the time he was eleven, and winning the Montreux Jazz Festival's piano competition in 2003. He released his debut album, World Passion, in 2004 at the age of seventeen. The following year, he won the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition. Additional albums include New Era; Red Hail; A Fable, for which he was awarded a Victoires de la Musique (the equivalent of a Grammy Award in France); Shadow Theater; and Luys i Luso which featured the Yerevan State Chamber Choir focusing on Armenian sacred music stretching stylistically from the 5th century to the 20th century.   His Nonesuch debut, Mockroot (2015), won the Echo Jazz Award for International Piano Instrumentalist of the Year; subsequent records for the label include An Ancient Observer (2017) the companion EP, For Gymuri (2018), Revisiting the Film (2021) and most recently StandArt (2022). Hamasyan was awarded the Deutscher Jazzpreis international category in Piano/Keyboards in 2021. Hamasyan has released records on France's Plus Loins, Universal France, Nonesuch and ECM. Hamasyan's new conceptual album “The Bird of a Thousand Voices” was released in August 2024 on Naïve/Believe – his debut with the label. Tigran composed, scored, and arranged the much-anticipated project blending its traditional folk footprints with rock influences. The first single from the album “The Kingdom” can also be experienced as an interactive game at www.bird1000.com. The recently released double album is inspired by an ancient Armenian tale in which a hero travels into unseen realms to find and bring back a mythical bird – whose thousand different songs will awaken people again and bring harmony to the world. The transmedia music theater piece ‘The Bird of a Thousand Voices', an intriguing immersive light installation with shadow play, digitally programmed voices, live music, and an Armenian-English libretto, premiered at the Holland Festival in June 2024.   In addition to awards and critical acclaim, Hamasyan has built a dedicated following worldwide, as well as praise from Herbie Hancock, Brad Mehldau and the late Chick Corea. “With startling combinations of jazz, minimalist, electronic, folk and songwriterly elements…Hamasyan and his collaborators travel musical expanses marked with heavy grooves, ethereal voices, pristine piano playing and ancient melodies.
