It just doesn't get better than this. I knew, and have known since I was 10, that Peter Noone is easy on the eyes and the ears. Meeting him recently after his show at The Canyon Club in LA, I also knew he was funny, crazy talented, nice to a fault, and charismatic as hell. What I didn't know was that Mr. Herman's Hermits, a name chosen for hysterical reasons (he ‘spains), would regale us with story after story, many previously untold (I listened to a load of his interviews today), before tonight, one more precious than the next, each told with wild enthusiasm and almost reckless, but not quite, abandon. We laughed like hell for the entire hour and forty minutes. Reading the comments on Facebook, which we couldn't see during the broadcast, so did the Live audience. There were a few technical glitches before, during, and it turns out, after, but so what! This show is a gem, a diamond in its glory, nothing rough about it… Well, the tech stuff, but who cares? It's like having the best slice of pizza and quibbling over a little dripped cheese. Peter, with his 60 million records sold, 7 gold albums, and 14 gold records, has met and has known everybody who's anybody, and I do mean everybody, and he shares juicy tales from the front, back, and side about so many of them. Friends with the Beatles, Peter's remembrances of John and Paul are priceless. Likewise, Elvis, Bowie, Mick Jagger, Eric Burdon, Leslie Gore, Graham Nash & The Hollies, The Cavern, meeting his wife at a Hendrix Concert and marrying her on his 21st birthday because… well, I let him tell you, his family foibles, the drinking, more drinking, getting sober, advice on drugging from Keith Richards, hysterical, and the creme de la creme with Richard McArthur Park Harris, worth the price of admission. There was some singing here and there, including a bissel, There's a Kind of Hush. Speaking of bissel, Peter's got more Yiddish than I do. The story of his nuptials with his French, Jewish bride in a Roman Catholic church is pure Peter. From the man who gave us, I'm Into Something Good, Mrs. Brown, You've Got A Lovely Daughter, I'm Henry VIII, I Am, Can't You Hear My Heartbeat, Listen People, No Milk Today, we got a treasure trove of bliss. It just doesn't get better than this! Peter Noone Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson **Wed, June 3rd, 7 pm PT, 10 pm ET**

From the grind of getting stage time in Los Angeles to balancing stand-up with acting and self-promotion, Laurie shares a real look at the hustle behind the laughs.  The episode also dives into how comedians use social media, why live audience response still matters, and why great art should make people feel something. På vägen dit virvlar man förbi Elkie Brooks, The Dakotas, Pete Maclaine & The Clan, Ivan D. Juniors, Haydock's Rockhouse och The Generation. Graham Nash's incredible career spans over 60 years. He's a two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, with Crosby, Stills & Nash and the Hollies. He's a Grammy Award winner and two-time inductee to the Songwriters Hall of Fame—as a solo artist and with CSN. With CSN and CSNY he has written and performed some of the greatest songs ever including “Marrakesh Express,” “Teach Your Children” and “Our House”. His solo career yielded two albums which include “Chicago/We Can Change the World,” and “Military Madness.” He's been a passionate advocate for peace and social and environmental justice, and created . The No Nukes/Musicians United for Safe Energy (MUSE) concerts with Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt in 1979. Graham is also the author of the NY Times bestselling memoir Wild Tales, and he's a renowned photographer and visual artist whose work has been shown in galleries and museums worldwide. Most recently he released A Life In Focus: The Photography Of Graham Nash. And his most recent album is 2023's “Now”. Graham takes us back to his early years and musical influences; the genesis of Crosby, Stills & Nash and the timeless music they created together and with Neil Young; his poignant memories of David Crosby; reflections on Woodstock, Joni Mitchell, and the 60's/70's; the importance of protest songs, especially today; and more. And in one of my favorite stories, Graham describes a recent emotional visit back to the Laurel Canyon home he shared with Joni for two years, and where he wrote "Our House" in one hour on a cold, rainy day. Kim Fritz - musik i samtiden

Hello Friends! After an extended break away from the Fab Five, we return to The Hollies on Mixology with a look at their 1966 album, 'Would You Believe?'. Their first issued in stereo in the UK (almost at the same time), this LP has always had a very curious mix situation, with the stereo being somewhat inventive with it's panning, and the mono being quite muddy for the most part. With this in mind, I dived into this episode hoping to break down why this is, and let me tell you that the answer was somewhat unexpected, but also somewhat creative - if expedient. With a major discovery on our hands here, this episode only further complicates the mono vs stereo debate when it comes to this material, so don't have a Hard Hard Year, let's dig in! Happy Listening, Frederick

Abbey Road Studios in London, England was the world's first purpose-built recording studio. Opened way back in 1931, this building and the people inside have been at the cutting edge of recording technology for over 90s years. Abbey Road Studios is most famous for being where The Beatles recorded almost all of their music, but it also drove innovation with stereo recording, multitracks, editing, and the shift from analog to digital recording.  In addition to all of those amazing Beatles records – which we'll get to – some other stuff recorded at Abbey Road includes Dark Side of the Moon and albums from Kanye West, Lady Gaga, Oasis, the Hollies, Radiohead, and the Zombies. Music scores for Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Marvel movies, and video game soundtracks for Halo, Call of Duty, and World of Warcraft. They even recorded some of Winston Churchill's famous speeches during World War II to help keep morale high.  From classical roots to rock rebellion, Abbey Road's always been ahead of the game, rewriting rules along the way. In The Past: Garage Rock Podcast

By request from Chris & Val of the Cavern Club, we're playing "Searchin'"  by The Coasters! It's a Table-Topper and a Goofy Great with an oompah beat and an amazing vocal performance by Billy Guy - what else do you want? On New Year's Day 1962, The Beatles recorded a version that wasn't released for years and that's because it stinks! Isn't the story that they honed their sound in the dirty clubs of Germany? They musta had too much NYE grog because you can't hear it here ... Next up is The Hollies who do a decent British Invasion verzh but it doesn't have the fairy dust it needs. Back to the States for Dick Dale's "Surfin'" - yes it's an adaptation but it doesn't really shoot the curl. Paul Revere & The Raiders's rendition leaves out the Mountie which might be a statement? Neal Ford & The Fanatics offer a subdued take that goes double-time, "Shout"-style at the end. Is 7 the lucky number? No! It's a 1968 (shudder!) track by The Tow-Away Zone and the best thing about them is the name ... stick to the original!!!

Few voices in rock history are as instantly recognizable as Allan Clarke, the co-founder and lead singer of the iconic British band The Hollies. With a career that spans more than six decades, Allan's soaring vocals, heartfelt delivery, and unforgettable harmonies have become synonymous with the golden age of classic rock and the British Invasion. Known for timeless hits like He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother, Long Cool Woman (In a Black Dress), and Bus Stop, Allan's legacy as a rock legend is as vibrant today as it was in the 1960s.He was born Harold Allan Clarke n Salford, England. As a child, Allan developed a passion for music, drawing inspiration from early rock 'n' roll icons like Elvis, Buddy Holly, and Little Richard. His friendship with Graham Nash—who would later go on to fame with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young—proved to be the foundation for one of the most beloved bands of all time.In 1962, Clarke and Nash formed The Hollies, a name inspired by their mutual admiration for Buddy Holly. The band's signature sound, marked by bright guitar riffs, tight vocal harmonies, and Allan's powerful yet soulful voice, quickly captured the attention of the British music scene. By '63, The Hollies were signed to the same label as The Beatles. The Hollies scored their first major hit with Stay in '63, but it was songs like Bus Stop and Carrie Anne that cemented their status as hitmakers. Allan Clarke's voice was the emotional core of The Hollies, effortlessly blending pop sensibilities with the raw energy of rock. One of Allan's most defining vocal performances came with the release of He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother in '69. Featuring a young Elton John on piano, the song became a global anthem of brotherhood and compassion. In '72, The Hollies had another worldwide hit with Long Cool Woman , a track that still dominates classic rock radio playlists today. While Allan's legacy is firmly rooted in his work with The Hollies, he also pursued a solo career, releasing several solo albums that blended rock, folk, and country influences.Allan Clarke temporarily left The Hollies in '71 but returned in '73. His second departure in '99 marked what many assumed was the end of his career due to vocal health issues. In 2019, he made a remarkable comeback with his album Resurgence. The project marked his first solo release in decades and proved that his voice still carried the same warmth and emotion that defined his early work. Allan also collaborated with his old friend Graham Nash . His recent work bridges the gap between classic rock nostalgia and modern storytelling. The Hollies, with Allan Clarke at the helm, have sold over 60 million records worldwide and remain one of the most successful groups to emerge from the '60s.Their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was a long-overdue recognition of their influence on generations of musicians and fans. Today, Allan Clarke stands as a bridge between the early days of rock ‘n' roll and the present. His journey from the streets of Salford to international stardom with The Hollies is a testament to the enduring power of great music, determination, and collaboration. For classic rock fans, Allan Clarke's voice is not just a sound — it's a memory, an era, and a feeling rolled into one.Whether you're revisiting He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother, grooving to Long Cool Woman, or discovering Clarke's latest music, there's no denying his place in the pantheon of classic rock legends. Join us today as Allan Clarke shares stories of his rise to fame, his friendship with Graham Nash and what the music of The Hollies means to him.

We covered the self-titled debut album from Crosby, Stills & Nash in episode 137.  Deja Vu is considered the second Crosby, Stills & Nash album, but it is actually the first album by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, with Canadian songwriter Neil Young turning the trio into a quartet. While the album continues to feature the signature harmonies associated with Crosby, Stills & Nash, it has a harder, more rocking edge to it. Some of this is undoubtedly due to the addition of Neil Young to the album, but it also reflects the challenges the group members were facing.  Both Stephen Stills and Graham Nash had gone through break-ups in their relationships, and David Crosby tragically had lost his girlfriend Christine Hinton in a car accident. The album was highly anticipated, generating $2 million in pre-sales before its release.  It became a gold record only 14 days after release, and was on the Billboard 200 album chart for 88 weeks.  Contemporary critics provided mixed reviews, but the album has only grown in stature over time, with many reviews considering it amongst the top albums ever produced.  Deja Vu was inducted into the Grammy Hall of fame in 2012.After its release, each of the principal members of the group would record solo albums, and the success of Deja Vu contributed to the individual success of these four solo projects.Crosby, Stills & Nash (and sometimes Young) would continue to produce albums over the decades with their last collaboration occurring in 2015.  The death of David Crosby in 2023 ended the possibility of full reunions.Wayne brings us this soft rock singer-songwriter live album for this week's podcast. Carry OnThe opening track to the album was penned by Stephen Stills who also provides lead vocals.  It is a medley of two songs edited together with a jam session connector, and came together surprisingly fast during a time when most songs were taking a long time to finish.  The lyrics encourage the band members to keep going through times of struggle in relationships both within and outside the band.Teach Your ChildrenGraham Nash wrote this song in 1968 when he was with The Hollies, but had not recorded it with that group at the time.  Nash has associated the song with a photograph exhibit showing a child playing with a toy hand grenade, and the lyrics encourage parents to be careful in how they teach their children.  Neil Young does not play on this song, but the steel guitar is provided by Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. WoodstockUnlike the other tracks on this album, this song was not written by any of the band members, but was penned by Joni Mitchell.  Mitchell had not attended the Woodstock festival, but was inspired to write this song told from the perspective of a concert goer after hearing her then-boyfriend Graham Nash relay the account.  It has become a signature song for the group and a staple of the 60's counter-culture.  Our HouseGraham Nash wrote this song as a description of a day spent with then-girlfriend Joni Mitchell and her two cats in their Laurel Canyon home.  The song was written in an hour on Mitchel's piano.  It went to number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100.  ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the motion Picture "Patton"This epic starring George C. Scott was playing in the theaters in 1970.  It won seven Academy awards, including Best Picture. STAFF PICKS:Let It Be by The BeatlesLynch starts the staff picks with a song inspired by a dream.  Paul McCartney's mother, Mary Patricia McCartney, died of cancer with Paul was 14.  In the dream, his mother encourages her son by saying, "It's all right, just let it be."  This single and title song from the final Beatles album debuted at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 before topping those charts.Cecilia by Simon & GarfunkelRob brings us the third single from the fifth and final album by Simon & Garfunkel, "Bridge Over Troubled Water."  It was developed in a late night jam when the duo and friends were banging on a piano bench and recording the sound with a tape recorder.  The lyrics depict the heartbreak of a boy delivered from Cecilia his unfaithful lover. The Rapper by The JaggerzBruce features the most successful single from the band whose guitarist and primary songwriter would go on to be Donny Iris.  The song is a warning to the ladies not to be taken in by a smooth talking man telling them lies.  It went to number 2 on the charts.Superlungs My Supergirl by Terry ReidWayne's closes out the staff picks with a cover originally written by Donovan about a 14-year old groupie.  Terry Reid was Jimmy Page's first pick to be lead singer of Led Zeppelin, but was unavailable at the time due to his touring schedule with Cream and the Rolling Stones.  Reid would acquire the nickname of Superlungs. NOVELTY TRACK:Pineapple and the Monkey by The FacesThis instrumental from The Faces debut album takes us out for this week.  Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. Teach Your Children Graham Nash wrote this song in 1968 when he was with The Hollies, but had not recorded it with that group at the time.  Nash has associated the song with a photograph exhibit showing a child playing with a toy hand grenade, and the lyrics encourage parents to be careful in how they teach their children.  Neil Young does not play on this song, but the steel guitar is provided by Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead.  Woodstock Unlike the other tracks on this album, this song was not written by any of the band members, but was penned by Joni Mitchell.  Mitchell had not attended the Woodstock festival, but was inspired to write this song told from the perspective of a concert goer after hearing her then-boyfriend Graham Nash relay the account.  It has become a signature song for the group and a staple of the 60's counter-culture.   Our House Graham Nash wrote this song as a description of a day spent with then-girlfriend Joni Mitchell and her two cats in their Laurel Canyon home.  The song was written in an hour on Mitchel's piano.  It went to number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: Theme from the motion Picture "Patton" This epic starring George C. Scott was playing in the theaters in 1970.  It won seven Academy awards, including Best Picture.   STAFF PICKS: Let It Be by The Beatles Lynch starts the staff picks with a song inspired by a dream.  Paul McCartney's mother, Mary Patricia McCartney, died of cancer with Paul was 14.  In the dream, his mother encourages her son by saying, "It's all right, just let it be."  This single and title song from the final Beatles album debuted at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 before topping those charts. Cecilia by Simon & Garfunkel Rob brings us the third single from the fifth and final album by Simon & Garfunkel, "Bridge Over Troubled Water."  It was developed in a late night jam when the duo and friends were banging on a piano bench and recording the sound with a tape recorder.  The lyrics depict the heartbreak of a boy delivered from Cecilia his unfaithful lover. The Rapper by The Jaggerz Bruce features the most successful single from the band whose guitarist and primary songwriter would go on to be Donny Iris.  The song is a warning to the ladies not to be taken in by a smooth talking man telling them lies.  It went to number 2 on the charts. Superlungs My Supergirl by Terry Reid Wayne's closes out the staff picks with a cover originally written by Donovan about a 14-year old groupie.  Terry Reid was Jimmy Page's first pick to be lead singer of Led Zeppelin, but was unavailable at the time due to his touring schedule with Cream and the Rolling Stones.  Reid would acquire the nickname of Superlungs.   NOVELTY TRACK: Pineapple and the Monkey by The Faces This instrumental from The Faces debut album takes us out for this week.

What the Riff?!?
1974 - July: Beach Boys “Endless Summer”

What the Riff?!?

By the mid-70's the Beach Boys appeared to be a band that had been left behind.  Sales had been only moderate for their previous albums, and the band was struggling to determine their direction musically.  In the summer of 1973 the movie "American Graffiti" featured several Beach Boys songs, creating nostalgia for the earlier surfing music.Between the revived interest sparked by "American Graffiti" and the success of the Beatles "Red" and "Blue" compilation albums, the Beach Boys released a collection of hits from their early 60's catalogue called Endless Summer.  This featured songs from their Capitol Records days, 1962-1965.  It was a near-instant success reaching the top of the charts in the United States four months after its release, and becoming their second number 1 album on the US charts.  After the success of Endless Summer, the Beach Boys would reposition themselves as an oldies act, continuing in this vein for many years.  Brian Wilson would pen one further Beach Boys studio album in 1977 which would meet with meager sales.  Afterwards the band would focus on their classics until seeing a resurgence in the late 80's generated from another popular film, Tom Cruise's "Cocktail" Wayne brings us this surfin' themed compilation for this week's podcast. Catch A WaveA true surfing song, this tune is about being on a surfboard, waiting for the right wave to come along.  This song was originally released on the 1963 album "Surfer Girl," and a rewritten version was recorded by Jan and Dean as "Sidewalk Surfin."Little Deuce CoupeThis track is about a 1932-vintage Ford model 18 hot rod used in drag racing on the streets of California.  "American Graffiti" had featured the deuce coupe prominently, along with the Beach Boys song.  The lyrics were written by local radio DJ Roger Christian.Shut DownAnother song about drag racing, "shut down" means you are about to beat the person in the race.  The phrase "tach it up" may have lost some meaning in the era of automatic transmission, but the tachometer would run high for a drag race.  The song is told from the perspective of the driver of a 1963 Corvette Sting Ray in a race against a 1962 Dodge Dart.Fun, Fun, FunThe inspiration for this song was a story the Beach Boys heard during a radio interview.  The station owner described his daughter "borrowing" his 1963 Thunderbird to go to a drive-in hamburger shop.  The opening riffs were inspired by Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode."   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Uptown Saturday Night by Dobie Gray (from the motion picture “Uptown Saturday Night”)Sidney Poitier starred in and directed this action comedy which co-starred Bill Cosby, Harry Belafonte, Richard Pryor, and Flip Wilson. STAFF PICKS:The Joker by the Steve Miller BandLynch leads off the staff picks with a well known song from Steve Miller.  The names in the first line reference several of Miller's previous songs, as well as the made-up word "pompatus."  It barely cracked the top 40 in the US, hitting 40 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Miller borrowed some lyrics from the song "Lovey Dovey" when he talks about wanting to "shake your tree."The Air that I Breathe by the HolliesRob brings us a slow burning but iconic ballad that the Hollies covered.  The original was from Albert Hammond, and previously covered by Phil Everly.  The Hollies version was the most successful, going to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Alan Parsons was the engineer on this song.Hollywood Swinging by Kool & the GangBruce's staff pick is the first number 1 R&B Single from Kool & the Gang.  It was a crossover hit as well, going to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Rick Westfield is the keyboardist for it and sings lead.  The song is a true story of the keyboardist wanting to become "a bad piano-playing man" with the group. Rock and Roll Heaven by The Righteous BrothersWayne's features an ode to the rock stars who had died at an early age. This song is another example of a song that was covered, and did better than the original.  Climax performed this song in 1973 but did not chart, while the Righteous Brothers took it to the top 10 in the United States.  Lyric would be added in the years to come as more rock stars passed. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Chameleon by Herbie HancockThis jazz funk instrumental track closes out the podcast for the week.  Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. In 1968, singer and songwriter Graham Nash joined David Crosby and Stephen Stills to form the supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash. All of them had already been in successful bands: Graham Nash had been in The Hollies; David Crosby was in The Byrds; and Stephen Stills was in Buffalo Springfield. The next year, Neil Young joined them, to make Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. The four of them released Deja Vu in 1970, and that album was a huge success. It sold over 8 million copies. It includes the song “Our House,” and for this episode, I spoke to Graham Nash about the making of that song, and the relationship that led to the song. For more, visit songexploder.net/crosby-stills-nash-and-young.
