Muhammad Ali is widely recognized as one of the greatest athletes of all-time and one of the most important figures of the 20th century. In addition to his long and celebrated career as a boxer and three-time heavyweight champion of the world, Ali changed the conversation about race, religion, and politics in America. Ali's refusal to be inducted into the U.S. military during the Vietnam War on religious grounds—a profound act of resistance that resulted not only in Ali's three-plus-year exile from professional boxing, but also a criminal conviction and five year-prison sentence that Ali almost had to serve until it was reversed by the U.S. Supreme Court—represented a pivotal moment of the 1960s. Ali has been the subject of numerous books and documentary films, including the Oscar-winning When We Were Kings (1996) and The Trials of Muhammad Ali (2013). He is also the subject of the 2001 Hollywood biopic, Ali (co-written and directed by Michael Mann and starring Will Smith as Ali), which focuses on the ten-year period from Ali's capture of the heavyweight crown from Sonny Liston in 1964 to Ali's fight against George Foreman in Zaire in 1974 (the famed “Rumble in the Jungle”). Once a sharply polarizing figure, Ali became one of the most celebrated and eulogized individuals in America, whose rich, if not incomparable, legacy reverberates around the world today.  Timestamps:0:00    Introduction2:22      Formative experiences5:00     From Cassius Clay to Muhammad Ali10:26    Opposition to the Vietnam draft13:16     Ali's loss of his prime years15:42     The broader significance of Ali's opposition to induction 18:08    Ali's legal challenges and the U.S. Supreme Court22:48:   The Fight of the Century24:06    From a symbol of resistance to reconciliation27:50     Becoming a global icon: The Rumble in the Jungle35:30    Ali and Howard Cosell 36:57    Ali and Malcolm X41:08    Some problems of the Ali biopic44:12     Ali's post-boxing career47:53    Sports and resistance: Ali's legacy      Further reading:Hauser, Thomas, Muhammad Ali: His Life and Times (1991)Kindred, Dave, Sound and Fury: Two Powerful Lives, One Fateful Friendship (2006)Lederman, Marty, “The story of Cassius Clay v. Sales Gravy: Jeb Blount
George Foreman’s Masterclass on Resilience (Money Monday)

Sales Gravy: Jeb Blount

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 23, 2025 11:17

George Foreman gave us a masterclass in resilience, on never giving up. His pivots and comebacks from defeat were legendary. He was a force of nature and one of the greatest boxers, salesmen and personalities the world has ever known. His inspirational story matters to us because one of the most critical mental disciplines for sales professionals is resilience.  Foreman's "In the Mud" Moment The George Foreman most of us remember, the man with the big charismatic smile selling grills on TV, was a far cry from the young man growing up in poverty in Houston's Fifth Ward, where lunch was often a mayonnaise sandwich.  As a teenager, George was an angry, mean bully who stole from kids at school and was shoplifting and mugging his way through his neighborhood. He was living on the edge, one arrest away from landing in a jail cell and potentially a life behind bars. One night, he was lying flat on his face in stinking mud, hiding from the police, when it hit him like a left hook that he was going nowhere like this. It was a moment of truth that changed the trajectory of his life. Lying there covered in filth, he made a promise to himself to change his path. He realized that if he wanted to avoid going nowhere, he had to make a massive mindset shift.  He enrolled in the Job Corps—a federal program that helps disadvantaged youth pick up real life skills—and soon after discovered boxing. And from that moment on, he replaced petty crime with gloves, replaced street fights with disciplined training, replaced despair with a sense of purpose.  This type of mindset shift is exactly what resilience is about. Sometimes you've got to face the fact that your old excuses, old habits, or old environment aren't working for you anymore. And when you decide to do something different—really decide—you set the stage for everything else that follows. That stinking mud moment is where you get real about your situation. It's where you decide that you've had enough and realize that the change you are looking for can only be found inside yourself because that's where resilience comes from.  Developing Resilience in the Face of Devastating Defeat Once George got serious about boxing, he rocketed to stardom. He won gold in the 1968 Olympics, then tore through the heavyweight division.  In one of his most famous fights, he defeated Joe Frazier in just two rounds, creating the iconic moment when Howard Cosell screams, “Down goes Frazier, down goes Frazier, down goes Frazier!” Foreman emerged from that fight as a heavyweight wrecking ball, the unstoppable champion of the world. Then, he ran into a wall called Muhammad Ali. Millions of people tuned in to watch Foreman and Ali battle it out in what was hyped as the “Rumble in the Jungle.”  Going into the fight, Foreman was the overwhelming favorite. But it was his overconfidence that lulled him into Ali's famous rope-a-dope strategy. This led to a crushing and embarrassing defeat. Ali knocked Foreman out in the eighth round, shocking the world and pulling off the upset of the century. Foreman was humiliated on the global stage. In that moment, he went from being the hardest hitting, baddest man on the planet to an also-ran.  Sales and life can be the same way. You might have soared for months, hitting every goal. Then the bottom falls out. The real test isn't whether you can ride success, but whether you can respond to defeat with resilience. The real question is, will you pick yourself up and make a comeback or fold up like a cheap lawn chair and quit. Will your failure become a tattoo or temporary bruise?  Retreat and Reinvention — The Next Pivot After that loss to Ali, Foreman was devastated. But he continued fighting until at the age of 28, he had a near death experience in Puerto Rico following a loss to Jimmy Young. It was one more lapse into overconfidence in which Foreman failed to prepare for the fight and was taken down by yet another underdog.

Frank Gifford was one of the great football broadcasters. A staple on Monday Night Football with Howard Cosell and Don Meredith, it's fair to say that most people remember Gifford for calling a game. But how many remember him for what he did on the field, or even know that he was one of the best to ever play? As a halfback and flanker, Gifford combined to score 77 touchdowns during his Hall of Fame career with the New York Giants. An all-around star, he also kicked (on occasion), played in the defensive backfield where he also scored a touchdown, and he holds the NFL record for most touchdown passes in a career by a non-quarterback with 14. Yes, Gifford could burn you in so many ways. His career at the University of Southern California was also spectacular. In fact, two years prior to his enshrinement into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Gifford was enshrined into the College Football Hall of Fame. His No. 16 is retired by the Giants as well. On this episode of SFH, Chris Willis, Head Researcher at NFL Films, returns to the show for a wonderful discussion about on eof the game's all-time greats - Frank Gifford.

Tread Perilously's 1980s flashback month continues with an episode of Magnum P.I. called "Kiss of the Sabre." When Magnum is evicted from the guest house, he gets to know its new inhabitant: novice writer Betty Windom. Constantly suffering writer's block during her attempts to plot a tale of superspy Sebastian Sabre, she decides to butt into Magnum's latest case. Is a simple job verifying details of an insurance claim more than it seems? Magnum doesn't think so, but when Betty sees him nearly killed by a backhoe, it becomes clear things are not so cut-and-dry. And, maybe, it is the exact thing Sebastian Sabre needs. Erik immediately declares the episode to be a broadcast version of an Andy Sedaris movie. Another bevy of guest stars suggests the real reason he chose this episode. Justin's attempt to recall the premise of Magnum P.I. leads in strange directions. The pair doubt star Tom Selleck could have launched the Indiana Jones film series. They also evaluate Magnum's case and the Sabre story it inspired. Justin suggests a reason for the cast to play their regular parts and the characters in Betty's book. The first digression into Better Off Dead of 2025 occurs. Guest star Patrick Collins earns his name and Erik completely fails to create a Howard Cosell impression.

Fran Tarkenton is unquestionably one of the greatest quarterbacks ever to play the game of football. A true legend who rightfully earned his place in the NFL Hall of Fame, the College Football Hall of Fame (for his championship career with the University of Georgia Bulldogs), and on the list of the 50 Greatest Minnesota Vikings AND the 50 Greatest New York Giants. In his rookie season in 1961, Fran joined an expansion team called the Minnesota Vikings, and in the first-ever Vikings game he threw four touchdown passes and ran for a fifth, upsetting the great Chicago Bears. At the time of his retirement from the NFL in 1978, Fran owned every significant passing record: 3,686 pass completions, 47,003 passing yards, and 342 touchdowns. Legend. After retirement, Fran became a commentator alongside the one and only Howard Cosell in the Monday Night Football broadcast booth, he landed a job hosting That's Incredible, one of the biggest sensation TV shows of the 1980s, and he became an early entrant into the software business, a visionary move that launched what would become the longest-lasting and most lucrative part of his illustrious and multifaceted career. At 84.6 years old as of the date of this interview, Fran is as sharp – and as busy – as he's ever been. His company, Tarkenton, is as highly regarded as it is successful in helping other businesses grow and prosper. All the incredible lessons he learned growing up, on the gridiron, in entertainment, and in his many business ventures coalesce into his leadership of Tarkenton to this day. But Fran claims no responsibility for the success he's achieved. He attributes it all to the coaching he's received; in the NFL, from greats like Sid Luckman, Norm Van Brocklin and Bud Grant; and in business, from former IBM CEO John Akers to Walmart founder Sam Walton. In this episode, Fran shares colorful stories about his journey from the streets of Washington, DC; to Athens, Georgia, home of UGA; to the NFL; to entertainment; and ultimately to a wildly successful business career. They couldn't play in a bowl game. They couldn't play on TV. All they could do was play and win... and win big for that matter. The '74 Sooners were a wrecking ball... the defense led by the Selmon brothers gave up just 92 points. And the offense led by one of the greatest running backs in Oklahoma history, Joe Washington, averaged 43 points a game. They started the season on probation... and they ended it co-national champions. Washington would finish 3rd in the Heisman voting after a sensational junior year and after Barry Switzer's team demolished Kansas State 63-0, the Sooners back was on the cover of Sports Illustrated as he and his teammates were on their way to a perfect 11-0 season. Now, 50 years later, Washington talks about that great team and how they were able to look past being on probation. He spoke of his love of his head coach, Switzer and how he was a 2nd dad to him. He tells us about a night ... a Monday Night... when Howard Cosell introduced the country to Joe as he did something for the Colts nobody else has ever done in the NFL... Threw a TD, caught a TD, and returned a kick for a TD. And he does it while impersonating the iconic ABC sportscaster! Finally, he reminisces about winning a Super Bowl with the Redskins and what it was like sharing a backfield with Hall of Fame Running Back John Riggins. SI cover man Joe Washington is the reason we do this show. A 2-time National Champion & a Super Bowl Champion. He was a great all-around football player and 50 years later, he's still a great all-around guy. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We could be experiencing the October surprise this week and not even know it because it's so dark and nefarious. Of course I'm the guy that will bring it up.    In KCMO they are blaming all the crime on everything except a city hall that's not a fan of the police department.  The latest?  Brookside residents want the National Guard called in.   If you're of a certain age, your childhood as a sports fan was defined by Royals/Yankees playoff series' and it was mostly awful.  Walk off home runs, storming the field, Billy Martin messing with George Brett and homer Howard Cosell calling all the big games.  It was dreadful.  This series could help erase whatever 1980's win over the Bombers did not.    Chris Jones had a wonderful interview on NFL Network talking about the team's mission this year, we'll play part of it for you as the Chiefs prep for the Saints.  Lee Sterling of www.paramountsports.com is here with his picks and our song of the week is one of the hottest tickets in music singing a song that sounds like it's about Joe and Hunter Biden.

Jason and Alex explain the implications for global order of the first, and possibly onl,y 2024 Presidential Candidates Debate btw Harris and Trump. It was like a legendary heavyweight boxing match between a woman auditioning to be the mega-orderer-in-chief and the most well established disorderer the world has ever scene. And it ended in a more dramatic fashion than even an epic Howard Cosell play-by-play: Down goes Frazier, Down goes Frazier.     Trump acknowledged that he cannot go against Putin's wishes, that he does not want the Ukrainians to win the war; and then when taunted by Kamala about the small ‘crowd-size' at his rallies, Trump simply imploded: spewing grievance-filled conspiratorial lies about Haitian Migrants eating dogs in Springfield, Ohio, that Democrats order doctors to kill babies after birth, and that the Biden-Harris administration gives transgender transition surgeries to illegal aliens.    We at the Disorder Pod don't want to count chickens before they are hatched, but were both favourably surprised by Kamala's performance. As we pointed out in Ep 65, she does portray herself in a rigid, prosecutorial vibe and has been weak at explaining the specifics of her programmes. She might play identity cards a bit much for some middle-aged white males. And yet!, Sept 10, 2024 may go down in history as the first time that an opposing politician beat Donald J. Trump at the game of television. Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, and Jeb Bush failed at it in the 2016 Republican Primary. Hillary and Biden may have won debates against him but they never beat him at the game of television. Whereas, Harris made Trump look like a buffoon and she successfully baited and taunted him on live TV before tens of millions. She made the contrast extremely clear: that she wishes to Order the American economy and the world, while Trump wishes to Disorder it.    Show Notes Links:    Read Alex's Byline Times Article, ‘A Stumbling Trump Receives a Well-Deserved Shellacking at the First Presidential Debate': https://bylinetimes.com/2024/09/11/donald-trump-kamala-harris-debate-president-receives-shellacking-at-the-first-presidential-showdown/    Listen to Mehdi Hassan on the Guardian pod explain Gish-Galloping and how Donald Trump's debate strategy usually works and how it can be (and was defeated): https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/today-in-focus/id1440133626?i=1000668961270                 Listen to the 538 on the history Presidential Debates and how much they have swung the polls in the past: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/fivethirtyeight-politics/id1077418457?i=1000668933282    Listen to our take on Harris's weaknesses with white men from yesterday here: https://open.spotify.com/episode/3MtV4SS0QjAQGN5p9distS?go=1&sp_cid=40c19a23f8ed49573a18b2bb3c9b9b95&utm_source=embed_player_p&utm_medium=desktop&nd=1&dlsi=c462b99a0ae7432c   Learn more about your ad choices. Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Colin Cosell, grandson of legendary broadcaster and American cultural icon, Howard Cosell. Now, if you are born in the United States, you will definitely know Howard Cosell. But for those outside the US, that name night not be as well known. But in the 1970s and 80s, Cosell was at the Zenith of where celebrity, sports and pop culture mixed. Famous for his “Tell it like it is” manner on air, Howard Cosell was as famous for his calls of the boxing, football, baseball & the Olympics while also being remembered for his voice, his wit and his sometimes prickly manner. He got as much hate mail as he got praise and he was often at the center of controversy for his comments on air as well as his opinions off air. For many of us, Howard Cosell will be remembered as the man who broke the news to America that John Lennon was shot and killed which we watched Monday Night Football. For others he will be remembered for  as the  butt playful jokes from one of his best friends Muhammad Ali. This was a man who famously parlayed his fame as a sportscaster to television, film and the larger pop culture zeitgeist of the latter half of the 20th Century as you will soon hear. Talking to Colin, we get to see another side of Howard, a grandfather who doted on his family and young Colin. We discuss how the family all played board games together, the many dogs they grew up with and how he would see his grandfather every week or two growing up. Howard was a very present grandfather who could also pull some strings and arrange a meeting with a world famous athlete one day and hang with you eating bagels the next. Colin was a jovial guest who told  stories about the other Saturday Night Live Starring Howard Coselland how Cosell impacted the late night comedy juggernaut SNL we know today. We talk Monday Night Football with Frank Gifford and ‘Dandy' Don Meredith as well as the time  Jon Bon Jovi came over to talk. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast and everyone has a story.

CONTENT ISN'T KING It is often said that content is King. That isn't necessarily true. Content by itself won't gain you an audience. Content isn't King. Great content is King. Anybody can copy information. Your content needs to be infused with story and personality to really connect with listeners. To help you create more powerful interviews, grab my list of "17 of the most Powerful Podcast Interview Questions Ever". It is a free download you can get at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/interview. BE UNIQUE It really hit me one time when I was interviewing a musician on the air. I won't mention his name, because he called me out right there in the middle of the interview. Before our conversation, I went online and read his bio. I went through the news release they sent me about the new album and the tour. Once the interview began, I felt pretty good. We were rolling along with the standard questions and he was giving the standard answers. In what city will the tour start? When does the album come out.? What can we expect when you roll through here? Then I asked him a question about a detail in his bio. I though it was something unique. But he said, "Well, I see somebody read my bio." That's when I realized I couldn't just ask typical questions and get typical answers. To create great interviews, I needed to get my guests to tell great stories. Everything I was doing to this point was simply a derivative of someone else. I was a cliché, a poor knock off. Why would anyone listen to me when they could get the same thing by listening a variety of other interviews with the same guest? From there, I took my original content and made it great. CONTENT WITH STORIES Later in my career I was interviewing Preston Brust of the country band LOCASH. He and Chris Lucas had been working hard for years writing songs for themselves and others while also recording and touring. LOCASH had a few different record deals, but had never had that big hit they needed to break through. Other artists were recording songs the two had written, but none of those had hit either. In 2011, country superstar Keith Urban not only decided to record a song written by Preston and Chris, but he was going to release it as a single. When I was talking with Preston, I asked him what it felt like when he got the call that Keith Urban was releasing their song. Here is what he said. "Things weren't going so good. I get this phone call. I'm in the backseat of my friends car and I get this phone call and it sounded like something was wrong. And he says, 'I'm sitting next to Keith Urban and he just told me that 'You Gonna Fly' is going to be his next single, and he's releasing it next week.' And I literally had them stop the car and I got out of the car and I just let out this yell. It just felt like I'm back." They were back. That song went to number one on the country charts. Preston and Chris then wrote a hit for Tim McGraw and eventually a top 5 hit for themselves. I guarantee that question about how it felt to get that call hasn't been asked many times if ever of Preston. We created such a relationship over the years that he still texts me. They just finished their latest song called "Hometown Home" and he sent me the early version. That kind of relationship doesn't happen with typical questions and standard answers. Your audience also isn't attracted to typical interviews. Be different. BE YOURSELF Over the years, my style and content developed. I became myself. That is when my show became #1. My content was original and fresh. Nobody else was doing it. If your content isn't great, nothing else matters. The production of your podcast could be the best available. You could have all the bells and whistles available in your studio, including the best mic. The marketing of your podcast could incredibly creative and unique. However, if the content is average, no one will care. Don't simply go through the motions creating your content. Find a unique angle. Your take on the subject should be interesting. Make your content stand out using stories, creativity, and personal revelation. Content won't attract an audience unless it is great content. When your content is great, you become king. Make it happen. There are four key areas of focus when creating great content and tightening up your show.  1. BE ORIGINAL Old-timey radio would say, "Hello Everybody in Radioland!" You're not an announcer talking to a group. Be a person talking to another person. To be engaging, you need to be human. You need to be yourself. As you record your podcast, use your natural voice and your own words. Individuals who are new to broadcasting tend to want to sound like their broadcasting idols. They try to imitate those they have heard on the radio with their voice and clichés. Unfortunately, new broadcasters tend to sound as if they are using scripted drivel done in some character voice that is forced and unnatural. You don't need to sound like Wolfman Jack, Howard Cosell, Don LaFontaine or Howard Stern. In fact, you shouldn't sound like those guys. The big personalities are who they are. You should be who you are. If you are naturally over-the-top, then be over-the-top. If you are not, don't fake it. You'll sound like an amateur and people can tell. Be natural. Talk with a little energy, but always deliver it as you naturally speak. The days of "the voice for radio" are gone. You don't need a big voice to be on the radio. And you surely don't need a big voice to create a podcast. Your voice becomes unique by what you say, not how you sound saying it. Be yourself. Use your own voice instead of trying to impersonate someone else. Use your natural voice and your own words. 2. REPEATING YOURSELF That's right, of course, like I said, obviously. If you find yourself saying "obviously" or "of course", you are making two mistakes. The first error is repeating yourself. If you are saying "obviously" because you feel everyone already knows the information, you are wasting your breath. If it is obvious, there is no need to say it. To frame it in a way to indicate it is something everyone knows, I might simply make a statement. I may say, "Because the sun comes up in the East, I prefer my bedroom windows be on the West side of the house." Everyone listening to me knows the sun comes up in the East. I simply include the statement. If I use a phrase like, "Of course", it appears I didn't want it to look like I was trying to teach you about the sunrise. I didn't want you to think I just learned that. "Of course" plays it off, but it also doesn't need to be there. If it is "of course", there is no need to say it in the first place. CONFIDENCE The second error is lack of confidence, so we add filler words. You may want to sound knowledgeable to those who know the information. Yet, you know there is a segment of the audience that does not know the details. To inform those unaware, you add the "of course". In this case, you're just wasting words. I may say, "The band will be at the arena Saturday night, of course." Some may be aware of this performance. Yet, there may be people in the audience who haven't heard the news. It makes sense to add the information, but you don't need the "of course". The idea is to sound knowledgeable and credible to those that already know, while providing the information to those unaware. You simply need to restructure you sentence and eliminate the cliché. Use a sentence like, "When the band is at the arena Saturday night, parking will be at a premium." This sentence provides new information to both segments of the audience. I include the "arena Saturday night" portion for the new listeners while giving those already aware of the concert new parking information. Both receive a benefit without the filler words. When you include "that's right" or "like I said", you are repeating yourself. Your listener heard you the first time. Most people use these cliches to fill time while they think of the next thing to say. Avoid going in circles. Your listener will quickly become uninterested. Know where you're going and keep moving forward. 3. ELIMINATE CLICHES I hear so many cliches in podcasts today. They are present in business in general. A cliché is a phrase or opinion that is overused and betrays a lack of original thought. It is a very predictable or unoriginal thing or person. We had a leader of our division who would use one particular cliché on every conference call we had. Every month, we would have a conference call to keep each station in sync. It would be run by our division leader. The call would then feature 4 or 5 other speakers covering various topics. The call would last about 30 minutes. After every speaker would finish their report, our division leader would say, "Really good stuff." "That was really good stuff, Ray." "Thanks, Sarah. Really good stuff." When he would talk about new resources that were available to us, he would wrap it up with "really good stuff". When he talked about new music coming out, he would call it "really good stuff". What started out as a compliment became a hollow nod that carried no weight. It was overused and lacked original thought. It was predictable. He got so predictable, as the speaker would wrap up, we would say to ourselves, “that was really good stuff” right before our leader would chime in with the same line. It kept us entertained on the call, but added nothing to the conversation. What cliches are you using? They are everywhere. Many times you don't realize it is a cliché until you start listening to your own show, or a coach points it out. The one that sounds most out of place to me on a podcast is, "To be honest with you". When somebody says "to be honest with you", I immediately think, "were you lying to me before?" What message are you trying to convey when you say, "to be honest with you"? I assume you are simply trying to add emphasis to what you are saying. In reality, the cliché has lost its power. It means nothing. It's a cliché. There are many others. We are thinking out of the box. We are pushing the envelope. We are taking it to the next level. It's Erik here to remind you something or another. You know what I mean? You know what I'm saying. Listen to an older episode or two of your show. Really listen to the shows like a listener. Find the cliches and eliminate them. Be original. 4. AVOID ROUGH TRANSITIONS And now it's time for … This phrase seems harmless. It looks like a logical transition from one segment to another during your podcast. Unfortunately, this phrase gives your listener permission to leave the show. When you use "and now it's time for..." or some similar phrase, it tells the listener that one segment is over and we are moving on to something else. It also signals a natural break in the show and the perfect time to exit. The transition is a lot like a commercial break in a television show. It is time to grab the remote to see what else is available. This is why TV shows started using the cliff hangers to keep you around. Famous American showman P. T. Barnum noticed that people were lingering too long at his exhibits. If he could get them through the exhibit faster, he could get more people through in a day and make more money. Barnum posted signs around the exhibit indicating "This Way to the Egress". Henry would ask Barbara, "Have you ever seen an egress? No? Let's check it out." Unaware that "Egress" simply meant "Exit", people followed the signs to what they assumed was a fascinating exhibit only to end up outside. Take down your "egress" sign. If you truly want to hold your listener from one segment to the next, don't send up the signal. Simply move to the next segment. THE TRANSITION On a coaching call the other day, I pointed out to the host that he was using "I want to keep this moving" quite often in his show. When he says "I want to keep this moving", I know we are switching to a new topic. I can punch out here if I'd like. Instead, just move on. Imagine you are at a cocktail party. You are discussing the baseball game that you saw over the weekend. After the baseball topic runs its course, do you say, "Now it's time to talk about my new car"? I doubt it. You probably just roll right into, "Hey, I bought a new car last week." It is a natural transition. Your friend doesn't think, "Hmm, that was a pretty rough transition." They have moved on right along with you. As you wrap up one segment, move right to the next. You might end the first segment with, "If you take those steps, things should be back to normal." Roll into the next with, "Jackie has a question about teamwork," and play the call. The next segment just starts. You've hooked them on the next segment without opening the door to leave. Don't flash the exit sign. Eliminate "and now it's time for" to hold your listener for the entire podcast. TIGHTER CONTENT Focus on these four areas to create great content. Avoid repeating yourself. Eliminate the cliches. Create smooth transitions in your content. Above all else, be original. When you be yourself and ask great questions, it will be difficult to copy you. The content will be original. And, people will love you for it. Bob Barry's Unearthed Interviews

Howard Cosell had a boisterous personality. He once said, “I've been accused of being arrogant, pompous, obnoxious, vain, cruel, a showoff…and of course I am.” He was sarcastically nicknamed “Humble Howard.” In one of his sports commentaries, he suggested that Terry Bradshaw did not have the intelligence to win in the league. But in 1993, TV Guide named Cosell “The Best All-Time Sportscaster.” Howard called many of Muhammad Ali's boxing matches. His most famous championship fight call was the George Forman-Joe Frazier fight in Kingston, Jamaica. That's when Cosell yelled “Down goes Frazier, down goes Frazier.” You may remember on Monday Night Football, Dec. 8, 1980, Cosell announced the death of John Lennon. In this podcast he answers his critics and suggests that Al McGuire and other coaches had an unfair means of getting their star players. Of course, I gave McGuire a chance to answer that accusation.

"So one of the things that early on, before I became a dad was I want to be omnipresent. I believe in this quote from Woody Allen "80% of success is just showing up." I want to be at every single event. I want to be the guy that people when they think of big fights, they think of me. Howard Cosell, of MMA, all that stuff and more." Ariel's Parents: "My mom still watches my show every week, and it's a long show about a topic she doesn't know a hell of a lot about. But she does it because she loves and supports me." "She's the mom that a lot of my brother's girlfriends and stuff would stay in touch with, even after they broke up. Because she just had that connection with people. She asks questions, she listens, she has a good mind and eye for things." "My dad is a workaholic, and he'd be the first to tell you that. He's the kind of guy who, every day, I'd see him Monday through Friday, wake up, go to work at around seven, come home at around seven. He would have this massive box of papers, he would sit at the dinner table, and he would work on all the papers. He would take his shower at like 9:30, go to bed, and start over again, and he couldn't have been happier." Syracuse: In 9th grade, he was reading Sports Illustrated and learned that the U.S.'s top sportscasting degree is earned at Syracuse. Bob Costas went there. Marv Albert went there. So he went to Syracuse. Being homesick and full of anxiety in college: "I wouldn't want to go to the dining hall to eat, so I just stocked up on Blue Diamond almonds. Which I have a hard time eating till this day because it reminds me of those days. Chef Boyardee, Alphagetti, that's what I was eating. I was watching sports in my room, by myself, I had a single room, and I was just crippled with this anxiety. And every time I would leave home to come back to school, like Thanksgiving break was over, and whatnot, Christmas break, I was sad. I was down." When he knew he wanted to cover MMA – back home in the fall of 2006 when he found himself in Champs Sports Bar, on Saint Laurent Boulevard, where the TVs were tuned to a UFC pay-per-view special. When the Quebec-born fighter Georges St-Pierre beat up Matt Hughes and scored a TKO to win the welterweight championship, “the place explodes like the Canadiens just won the Stanley Cup. And I'm like: ‘I want to be a part of this sport.'” Being the Heel – He learned from Howard Cosell, who was known as a heel, the pro wrestling term for the bad guy who people tune in to see fall.  “Heelwani” What does it take to be a great interviewer? Be prepared. Ask thoughtful questions. Don't script the conversation. LISTEN. Ask better follow ups. Make it feel more like a conversation. Feuds with Dana White: "I'm the type of person who doesn't back down, in large part because of my parents and my family, and they never back down, so how could I? And why should I? Especially if I'm not doing anything wrong. So I would say I never sought it, I always try to diffuse it, privately. I don't try to get into Twitter wars and things like that, with other people. Where it seems like they spend their life over there trying to go back and forth. That being said, to your point, which is a great point, having an understanding of pro wrestling, and storylines, and feuds. And I come out of my ESPN chapter as Helwani, and punching back, and it's "High road Helwani, no more" and all that. Yes, sure, there's a little bit of pro wrestling in there, and I love pro wrestling. And I believe that there are a lot of elements in pro wrestling in a lot of different walks of life, including politics and whatnot. Good guy/bad guy, heel/face, all that stuff." How conduct a great interview? "You have to listen, you have to be ready to open your mind, open your heart, and not feel, again, like you're just coming out guns blazing, and hitting someone with haymakers. Listen to them, be soft, be gentle, be welcoming. But, again, Howard Stern, no one did it better, he breaks you down to the point where you think that you're just two guys sitting around, or a girl and a guy sitting around, and there are not even cameras or microphones. They forget that they're on a show, if you're empathetic, if you're warm, if you're welcoming, that's the best result." Make the ASK - Ariel knocked on the door of a senior executive at ESPN. The guy didn't even know who he was. And he asked to be a sideline reporter at basketball games. The senior exec said nobody had ever done that in 20 years. If you want something, ASK for it. Steve Jobs said the difference between the people who dream about stuff and the people who make it happen is the willingness to ask. You gotta ask. "I walked into his office, and there's a lesson, I think, here, for a lot of people. And I was like, "Hey, I have no credibility in the world of basketball, very few people know who I am. I don't have many sources. But if you ever need someone, in the 11th hour someone gets sick, someone gets hurt, I'll be your guy. I'll be your sideline reporter. I know to do that. And he said, "I'll be honest; I've never heard of you. I've never seen MMA. I've never seen your work. But I've been here 20 plus years, and no one has ever done what you just did, so I'll keep you in mind." Which was an amazing thing to hear, and mind-blowing that no one does that. All the offices are right there, just knock on the door."

SEASON 2 EPISODE 88: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Jack Smith dares our corrupt Supreme Court to answer the decisive question right here, right now: If Dementia J. Trump is right and he didn't just make up this "Presidential Immunity" bullshit out of whole cloth, why did Ford pardon Nixon? Why did Nixon negotiate a pardon with Ford before he resigned? Why did Trump say just three months ago he was advised to pardon himself, and that if elected again he would consider a self-pardon?  Smith's bold move to get the Supreme Court to decide this ultimate question will, if nothing else, cut Trump's endless stalls off at the pass. But with Samuel Alito just yesterday issuing a dissent in another case that might as well have been pulled off one of Trump's insane ALL CAPS SOCIAL MEDIA WORDGASMS, might Alito lead SCOTUS into a disaster just horrific enough to destroy itself and the nation by siding with Trump's ahistorical, unconstitutional crap? ALSO: On Day One of their trial, Giuliani's lawyer assures us he knows he did wrong and shouldn't be punished for slandering the two Georgia poll workers. Then Rudy goes out and slanders them again. Trump's mental deterioration is so obvious it was noticed even by Megyn Kelly (who looks like she could star in a re-make of "Ilsa, She-Wolf of the SS"). And his "dictator" remarks are so obviously dangerous that even Peter Baker and The New York Times noticed - and the Trump campaign is trying to get him to ix-nay the ictatorship-day. B-Block (20:00) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Their political grandfathers wanted to appease Hitler and give him England and the Jews. Today's GOP is meeting with representatives of Hungarian strongman Orban to try to appease Putin and give him Ukraine and NATO. (24:37) IN SPORTS: Shohei Ohtani is both selfless and selfish. He will defer $68 million a year of his $70 million salary, giving his new Dodger employers a huge break in the baseball "luxury tax" - and himself on the real California state tax. And what happened to that Ohtani-To-Toronto story? My bet, from having seen it occur to another brilliant sports reporter, is that Jon Paul Morosi didn't screw up; his source did - or lied to him. I'll tell you the Jim Lampley/Larry Brown story. And I'll SING ABOUT MOROSI AND OHTANI. (34:31) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Vivek Ramaswamy's most cogent statement ever: leaves the mike on during a bathroom break. Climate deniers will get to watch another previously unconsidered disaster unfold. And Nancy Mace and her fiancé broke up? A class dame like her what talks about morning sex at a prayer breakfast? c-Block (39:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: You are welcome to skip this, but I found a cassette over the weekend. It is a bunch of sportscasts recorded the week of my 18th birthday. The voice is high, the predictions are startlingly good. As are the cameos.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
