Our times are demanding that we reconnect to Nature and the place where we live. Given the impacts of the sixth great extinction, it is our personal and collective responsibility to support the return of biodiversity and native habitat. The World Wildlife Fund recently announced that we are losing 10,000 species a year to extinction, primarily due to habitat loss. Despite this, the U.S. has turned over 40 million acres of native-habitat into high-maintenance, lifeless and toxic lawns. According to Beyond Pesticides, suburban lawns and gardens receive more pesticides per acre than in agriculture, to the tune of 90 million pounds per year. Regrettably many people are now turning to fake grass or synthetic lawns for instant green gratification; however, these can be costly over their lifespan, potentially include harmful ingredients such as microplastics or recycled tires, and inhibit biodiversity. David Newsom is a filmmaker, storyteller, and outdoorsman. But when his daughter was born he realized he wanted to bring her butterflies, bees and all the rich diversity of the world, and so he became a gardener to a wild backyard. That very human impulse led to his founding of the Wild Yards Project – a non profit organization working to encourage and support the creation of native plant habitat gardens through audio visual stories of native plant visionaries and webbuilding. David speaks about the The South Carolina Compassionate Care Act. This act would allow physicians to recommend the therapeutic use of marijuana for those with debilitating or chronic diseases. DAvis is a U.S. Army Veteran and father of four children. After getting out of the Army his family and him moved from Alaska to Myrtle Beach. His youngest daughter Harmony Newsom was unfortunately born with a very rare genetic condition called Lissencephaly. Currently she is using a hemp derived CBD product as that is what is legal to obtain and we have regained seizure control however they understand that if she was able to have access to a comprehensive medical cannabis program we could ultimately continue to improve her quality of life.

Doug Fine is an American author, journalist, humorist, and goat herder. He has been a freelance journalist for such organizations as the Washington Post, Salon, U.S. News and World Report, Sierra, Wired, Outside, National Public Radio, and many other venues. His investigative reporting has taken him to five continents, often to remote locations like Burma, Rwanda, Laos, Guatemala and Tajikistan. One of his dispatches, on Burmese democracy efforts, was read into the Congressional Record. Fine won numerous awards for his radio reporting from rural Alaska before he moved to New Mexico.
