Welcome to another episode of The Chief Strategy Officer Podcast! Today, we're tackling a topic that sits at the heart of every successful organization: purpose. For years, the question of what purpose an organization should hold has typically sat outside the auspices of the strategy office. It was the remit of the CEO or board, maybe corporate communications or the HR. But it is increasingly becoming a central strategic lever, especially as the success of strategy depends on activating ecosystem partners, employees, communities … and it is one we need to better understand. How can companies define a purpose that isn't just a slogan but a real driver of strategic decisions? How does purpose impact employee motivation, customer engagement, and long-term competitive advantage? And most importantly, how can CSOs play a role in shaping and embedding purpose in a way that creates measurable business impact? To explore these questions, we're joined by David Zapata, Corporate Head of Strategy at Grupo Bancolombia, and Claudia Ludovisi, former head of strategy at Disney ABC, assistant Dean of Marketing and Strategy at Pepperdine Business School, who has done interest research into the role of purpose in strategy. Together, they share firsthand experiences and research-driven insights on how organizations can make purpose actionable, sustainable, and truly transformative. In this episode, we explore: Why purpose isn't just about branding—it should drive real business decisions. The biggest mistake companies make when defining their purpose. How to measure whether purpose is actually working inside your organization. The evolving role of AI in shaping personalized and scalable purpose-driven strategies. Insights and a step-by-step approach for crafting a purpose that aligns with strategy and capabilities for your organization. Whether you're refining your company's purpose or just starting to explore its role in strategy, this episode is packed with insights to help you take a more structured and impactful approach.Learn more about Outthinker's community of chief strategy officers - https://outthinkernetwork.com/Follow us on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/outthinker-networks Learn more about Outthinker's community of chief strategy officers - https://outthinkernetwork.com/ Follow us on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/outthinker-networks

Townhall Review - December 21, 2024 Hugh Hewitt turns to Jason Smith, Missouri Representative and Chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, on the need to deliver early on the Trump tax cuts if the GOP wants to keep the majority in 2016. Charlie Kirk turned to Patrick Bet-David for a look at Donald Trump’s return to the political stage, which has starkly contrasted his previous campaigns in 2016 and 2020. Trump’s approach this time feels fundamentally different, focused on winning and uniting allies—even critics. Hugh turns to Byron York of the Washington Examiner and weighs in on the $16 million settlement involving Disney/ABC and George Stephanopoulos. Mike Gallagher also addresses the settlement, framing it as evidence of dishonesty and bias in the legacy media. He argues the payout reflects years of lies and an effort to avoid accountability for misinformation. John Solomon and Lee Smith, author of Disappearing the President, discuss the erosion of free speech dating back to Trump’s removal from Twitter in 2021, how tactics born in the American liberal movement are influencing global politics, and the importance of restoring institutions like the FBI to serve the American people.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Success in the fast-paced world of advertising requires a focus on innovation and adaptation to the latest trends. This includes staying informed on changes in cookie usage, the growing importance of identity, and exploring opportunities in emerging platforms like connected TV (CTV). John Gentry, CEO of OpenX, joins me on the SEJShow to discuss the opportunities of ad exchanges, distribution beyond Google & Microsoft, how header bidding works, ad opportunities growing on mobile devices and CTV, and the role of identity and cookies in ad targeting. Gain insights on how to take your PPC and advertising efforts to new heights. The key is to put an offering in front of somebody who has articulated their interest. Reaching a consumer in real-time and understanding that they want something –they want a car, they want to get tickets to a baseball game. So you're responding to them at that exact time, making that work compelling. The big magic of that model was that real-time response to a user's needs. –John Gentry, 04:26 Paid search is a great entry point into an ecosystem of advertising models working together to identify that intent. And then, if someone may not make the purchase decision at that moment, you can then remarket/retarget. You can then remind them, or at least you have the data. Maybe they're somewhere in the funnel where you are looking at a blog post, buyer guide, or comparison page, and then you can follow them through. –Loren Baker, 05:07 Programmatic came out of that idea to take intent and see if you can respond to the user in some timeframe. The goal here is to try and keep that offer in front of the user when you think you understand the consumer wants to buy something. Programmatic extended that opportunity to be in front of that user and target that user with a different time window. –John Gentry, 05:53 [00:00] - About John. [05:07] - Where Programmatic comes in. [06:59] - Overview of OpenX. [09:46] - How is First-Party Data different from cookie-based advertising? [11:21] - How buyers match to data. [18:19] - More about Open audience. [19:38] - Will there ever be an alternative to Google? [22:34] - How AI will change the search experience. [25:42] - How targeting works in CTV. [33:09] - Ways OpenX stays sustainable. [39:28] - The next big thing to look out for. Resources Mentioned: OpenX - https://www.linkedin.com/company/openx/ Being able to target the level of an individual user is very powerful. All of this stuff is protected and wrapped up, and done safely. There's a recent move towards clean rooms, which are safe ways to exchange data so that you're guarding the person who owns the data; the company owns the data that's not leaking out. And there's a lot of investment in that, which is excellent because that goes back to privacy. How do, how do we keep these things? How can we do targeted advertising in a way that protects people's personal information? –John Gentry, 17:10 With CTV, you can now understand the household watching that content, which means you can now look at the behavior of those households to understand more directly potential attribution from an ad. That's a massive game-changer. And I think that's the big move. What we're seeing advertisers do–the first thing they did when Streaming came out–they realized that the early streamer audience was precious. I think what we're seeing now is kind of the expected and, not surprising, migration to more addressability and the ability to understand how can I target a given household –John Gentry, 26:22 Do we see consumer behavior move with AI? Because if the user moves to AI, that will be a new form of marketing, right? That's a place we're going to have to reframe. How do we engage with the consumer and help them find what they need or address what's coming up? So I think that's a fascinating area in terms of where things will go on the advertising side. –John Gentry. 40:06 For more content like this, subscribe to our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/searchenginejournal Are you looking to keep up with current and effective digital marketing today? Jerry Kolber is the co-creator and Showrunner of National Geographic's #1 series, BRAIN GAMES, for which he received a Prime Time Emmy Nomination. Kolber and Atomic are a frequent collaborator with icon Pharrell Williams, having created and producer BRAINCHILD (Netflix) with Pharrell, as well as two upcoming documentaries. Kolber is the co-creator and host of the world's most popular 3x weekly kids educational podcast Who Smarted?, which had three million downloads in its first year. Kolber's other creator and Showrunner credits include Inked (A&E), Confessions of a Matchmaker (A&E), GE in the Wild (with Mythbusters' Adam Savage), and the space documentary 14 Minutes from Earth (Netflix). Kolber grew up in the swamp in South Florida. He was an avid cyclist, theater kid, and nationally ranked Lincoln-Douglas debater. Kolber didn't know regular people could make movies until he met a group of regular people at NYU who were studying to make movies, where he was studying theater production and design. Kolber's first job was as Business Manager of the legendary Jean Cocteau Repertory Theater on the Bowery. Kolber followed his time at the Cocteau Rep with a summer in the immediately- post-Communist Czech Republic, attempting to produce theater in circumstances better suited to producing a nervous breakdown. Upon his return to the states, Kolber began working in the stage theatrical departments at major movie studios, including Universal and Disney. Kolber began his career in television in the production finance department at Dick Wolf's Fox hit “New York Undercover”, bridging the gap between finance and creative. He was the production auditor on the first seasons of HBO's Sex And The City, and Bravo's Queer Eye For The Straight Guy, ultimately becoming line producer of more than fifty episodes of Queer Eye while learning to put the hair product in from the back. Kolber went on a wild ride in the rapidly expanding early landscape of unscripted television, working for E!, fuse, Bravo, Disney/ABC, National Geographic, Discovery ID, MTV, Animal Planet, and multiple A&E series, as an in- demand Co-EP, showrunner, and writer of unscripted entertainment. He always knew that one day he would bring his love of entertainment and disdain for outdated one-size-fits-all education together and Brain Games provided the first of many opportunities to show what was possible. Since 2010 Kolber, his team at Atomic, and their amazing partners have been responsible for some of the most successful and beloved edutainment programming in the world. This week I'm talking with John Clinebell of Sync It! Music and Licensing Basecamp which teaches artists and producers to get their songs and production up to standard for sync pitching. John has tons of sync placements including Fox, Disney/ABC, CBS, Starbucks and more. We are discussing the best ways to approach making music and pitching music in the sync world, plus what genres of music are being asked for currently in sync. Sponsors: Edenbrooke Productions - We offer consulting services and are offering listeners a 1-hour introductory special. To request more info on consulting services, email Marty at contact@johnmartinkeith.com. In this episode we talk about: *A music supervisor is tasked with the creative and legal aspects of putting music to picture in tv or film within the budget they are given to work with. *Sync It Music and Licensing base camp teaching people to get the songs and production up to standard for pitching, providing encouragement and accountability and strategies for success with different workshops by bringing in experts in different areas and providing pitching opportunities as well. *Sync It Music partners with different licensing agents so the clients can pitch their music and hopefully get signed by the agent for representation. *Things to consider between exclusive and non-exclusive deals. *If it's confusing who reps your music, you can lose deals. *Follow music supervisors on social media to see what they are posting about types of music they are pitching for. *Genres needed for sync currently. *Your music needs to be soulful in a fun way for ads. *Most agencies want to support actual artists, not made up artists just for sync. *Music that works great for sync, but also fits what you do as an artist is best. *Create alt endings to your songs that ring out the the last chord instead of a sting ending. *Control Camp is a great place to learn what is needed in licensing. *Be polite to the people you want to work with. *Ask for what you want but do it in a way that is respectful. *Go through proper channels when pitching to supervisors. *www.johnclinebell.com *www.syncitmusic.com BIO: John is originally from the mid west, was based in Los Angeles for 15 years, and moved to Nashville in 2022. The doctor is in! This week features none other than the TV Script Doctor herself, Sarah McLaughlin, who also happens to be a successful comedy writer on shows such as That 70's Show and Drop Dead Diva. Growing up in New York, Sarah McLaughlin wasn't allowed to watch television… fascinated by the forbidden fruit, she pursued journalism at the University of Colorado, and before long she was in Los Angeles working as a production assistant on the final season of Home Improvement. On Home Improvement, she fell in love with scripted television, but didn't know anything about the industry. She used her time there wisely, talking to as many people in different TV jobs as she could, and reading as many scripts as she could get her hands on. After taking a course at UCLA and writing some spec scripts, she landed a spot in the Warner Brothers Writers Workshop. Though tremendously helpful, it didn't directly land her a writing gig. However, she was able to use her position as a writer's assistant on That 70's Show to pitch and write her own episode, and her writing career took off! After a few short stints on other shows, she ended back on That 70's Show, where she worked her way up for several seasons. She went on to work on South Park, and sell pilots to MTV and Sony Television, before landing work on her current show, Drop Dead Diva. Between her staff experience, and her work as a script evaluator and creative consultant for the Warner Bros. Writers Workshop and The Disney/ABC writers fellowship, Sarah understands what it takes to have your script go from the “reject” pile to the “yes” pile. In this podcast, she shares many great tips on how to improve your spec or pilot script, as well as sharing how a TV episode goes from idea to finished product. Sarah works as a consultant to both new and working writers through her website: http://tvscriptdoctor.com Follow Sarah on Twitter: @tvscriptdoctor Buy Gray's book for only $4.99! Writer Tamiko Brooks grew up in Detroit, but knew from an early age she wanted to work in the entertainment industry. She was not only the first Nickelodeon live action fellow, but was also accepted to the Disney/ABC writing fellowship. Tamiko Brooks earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia College Chicago. After graduation, she headed west to L.A., and got a job as an assistant on the TV sitcom, Moesha. Under the mentorship of some of the writers, Tamiko began writing spec sitcoms and ultimately received her first writing credit in 1999 with an episode of Moesha. Soon after, Tamiko was accepted to the first year of the Nickelodeon Writing Fellowship, along with former podcast interviewee Courtney Lilly. She was relocated to Orlando, FL to work on the Nick sitcom, Taina. After that, she became an ABC/Disney writing fellow. As a result, she was placed on the sitcom, 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter. The head writer was so impressed with her that he hired her on staff, and she was with the show for two seasons until its cancellation. Tamiko was then hired as a writer on Half & Half. Additionally, Tamiko has written freelance assignments for The Proud Family and the daytime drama One Life to Live. You'll learn a lot from Tamiko about navigating the industry, and dealing with the ups and downs and cyclical nature of TV schedules. Make sure you take part in the TV Writer Chat this Sunday night, as it will feature the launch of the first TV Writer Podcast contest, with some amazing prizes!
