POPULARITY
The doyenne of minimal reflects on Perlon, forgotten classics and the tracks that never leave her record bag in this live edition of Playing Favourites at Dimensions Festival. Following the minimal boom of the '00s and early '10s, the sound has in more recent years flourished quietly in the smaller corners of certain scenes. It certainly, as some people like to claim, never died. In fact, if you were to discuss this with Sonja Moonear, the Swiss DJ would argue that the genre is as popular as ever. Much like the other artists in the upper echelons of the scene—Zip, Raresh, Nicolas Lutz—Moonear made a name for herself by DJing rather than making music. She cut her teeth in Geneva as a resident at its key club at the time, Weetamix. Perlon label head Zip was a regular guest and, as Moonear recounts, he invited her to play in Berlin after she warmed up for him a few times. Moonear is now an in-demand DJ in her own right, with a style that takes in a broad cross-section of house, techno and minimal. Recorded at last summer's Dimensions Festival, this edition of Playing Favourites sees Moonear select some of her favourite '90s and early '00s minimal classics and the records that never leave her record bag. She's truly obsessed with music and finding rare grooves, and her enthusiasm shines through. In between playing tracks, she talks about the squat scene in Geneva and how she spends hours preparing her bag every week. She reminisces about the first time she put her hand on a turntable; her transition away from the piano as an adolescent; and her primary goal in her career, which is "purely to enjoy herself." @moonear ra.co/exchange/794

Episode 70! As you probably know, AIR is actually on hiatus from recording new episodes, and set to return in the new year 2025… However, this month and next month's episodes are actually recordings of two interviews produced in collaboration with @DimensionsFestival. Both took place on site with a small audience, and it was an absolute treat to be able to participate in the festival in this unique way, the first time that Dimensions has hosted artist talks at their venue in Tisno. First up, I'm chatting with a true legend of the scene, Tameko Williams also known as @DetroitinEffect. Instead of our usual focus on one topic, these on-site interviews act as artist profiles, delving into artistic history and personal milestones, exploring creativity, craft, and music. Hope you guys enjoy this recording, and thanks again so much to Pat and Hamish at Dimensions for the invite. ++ Music: "R U Married?" - Detroit in Effect (1997) "The One" - Detroit in Effect (1995) "The Men You'll Never See" - Detroit in Effect (2002) "Detroit Story" - Detroit in Effect (2023)
For this show David talks to one of the organizers of the great UK event 'Festival of the Unexplained' Nicki Scollan. Nicki talks about her role and also her own paranormal investigations within her own paranormal investigation team 'Lost Soul Paranormal'.
A veritable powerhouse of the Croatian techno scene Insolate has been establishing a global presence as a DJ and producer for over 20 years delivering as both a label boss at Out Of Place and the creative force behind their electrifying TRAUM events. Hailing from Osijek, Croatia, on the wide Croatian East – a town that at first glance a heavy industrial atmosphere overshadows, she is making her first steps as a DJ back in 1997 before taking over European and worldwide clubs. Her list of clubs and partys she played is impressive and includes Berghain, Rex, Tresor, Under Club, Club d'Anvers, Unter, Exit Festival, Tomorrowland, ADE and Dimensions Festival. Amongst many European clubs she played numerous tours in Colombia and recently added USA, China and Argentina to the list. As a producer, she's had a string of releases on highly respected labels including DJ Deep's Deeply Rooted, Marcelus's Singular and Developer's Modularz - supported and played by some of techno's finest including Laurent Garnier, DVS1, Dax J and Ilario Alicante. Also she released the stellar Obscure Object Of Desire EP on JoeFarr's new User Experience imprint, EP for a Suara and beautiful EP for Proletarijat, label run by Sev Dah. She also contributed to Ben Sim's compilation Tribology among giants as Planetary Assault Systems, Oscar Mulero, Steffi etc. and also made super interesting collaboration with french producer Arnaud le Texier and released EP with him for Prodigal Son. In 2019. she announced her debut album. The album Order is Chaos was released as a double vinyl and contains 10 tracks with extremely interesting collaborations with MATRIXXMAN and singer SARA RENAR. DJ Mag (UK) described album as “exciting journey thru trans-dimensional vocals, acid drenched sequences and floor obligated bangers.” Insolate is also a major contributor to the Croatian techno scene, so much so that she was in Ibiza to receive the award for "Dance Nation of the Year" at the DJ Awards on behalf of her nation. Her and long-time partner in crime Volster also run the event series TRAUM in her native Osijek. TRAUM events have cemented their place in the clubbing calendar with quality artists like Paula Temple, Antigone, Cassegrain, Janice, Etapp Kyle and Milton Bradley, just to name a few. The success of the TRAUM nights caught the attention of Red Bull Music Academy and Dimensions – both of which they have hosted official events for. Insolate being an international messenger of techno was recognised by Ambassador award that gave her a title "Croatia's ambassador overseas" for 2017. The final part of putting Osijek on the techno map was taken in 2015 with the launch of the label Out Of Place which Insolate runs with Volster. The label was named in honour of the beautiful struggle of carving your own way into the scene from a place that's well off the grid from the traditional capitals of techno. Now five releases strong, the label has already had contributions from heavyweights like Milton Bradley, Developer, JoeFarr, Francois X, Janice and many more. As a DJ, Insolate is well known for her no-compromise, pure-bred techno sets. It's clear to anyone who's seen her perform that she's an artist with a lot of experience but also plenty of inspiration and ambition, and a deep knowledge of techno. She is simply a natural presence in a DJ booth. If you've seen her play, you will know exactly what this means.

Happy to have one of our favorite DJ's on the Podcast. San Soda is one of the finest selectors in the game and played at places such as Panorama Bar and Dimensions Festival. Next to collecting records he's busy running his reissue label Music Take Me Up (MTMU), producing a lot of music he's probably never going to release and studying dog psychology. Truncate on The DJ Sessions presents the "Virtual Sessions" 12/02/20 About Truncate - After being introduced to electronic music back in the early 90's in Los Angeles, a teenage David Flores was hooked. He started DJing across Southern California on the DIY warehouse, backyard, desert, and rave circuit. His style then was as varied as the local scene - a myriad of sounds ranging from house to acid to techno to hardcore. After a few years solely DJing, he began releasing original music under the monikers David F & Audio Injection, which landed him on labels such as Monoid, Stimulus, 4 Track & LA label Droid Recordings. His association with Droid Behavior began in 2003 as resident at the now defunct yet infamous and internationally acclaimed Interface event series alongside Drumcell and Raiz. He currently runs a new event series together with Drumcell and Oktaform named “Observe”. In early 2011, he started the project Truncate to focus on the deeper, raw side of techno. His Truncate releases early on gained critical acclaim from world class underground talent such as Modeselektor, Ben Klock, Marcel Dettmann, Chris Liebing, Speedy J, DVS1, Luke Slater, Ben Sims, Josh Wink, Eats Everything, Joris Voorn, and many more. Since then, he has provided remixes for artists across the musical spectrum including Kink, Slam, Loco Dice, Ben Sims, Josh Wink, Ellen Alien, Miss Kittin, Carl Cox & Nicole Moudaber. He has also released original works on 50 Weapons, Ultramajic, Blueprint, Ei8ht, Figure and of course his own imprint Truncate. He has also collaborated with Jimmy Edgar, Chambray and most recently started a new project with Ben Sims as ‘Assailants' which they've released on their own imprint ‘Obscurity Is Infinite'. A rigorous international tour schedule has since followed, including stops and regular appearances at the most prestigious venues and events, including Berghain in Berlin, Fabric in London, Concrete in Paris, The Movement Festival in Detroit, Womb in Tokyo, Dimensions Festival in Croatia, Awakenings in Amsterdam, Output in New York, and many more. With his heavy remix, production and touring schedule there is still no slowing down for David. He continues to shape an evolving sound and to champion the Los Angeles underground. Bside Incoming: Partner Music This week we welcome the soothing sounds of Partner Music's Bside selection. A reputation forged in the UK scene is beginning to launch Partner Music into the realm of global recognition, with dance floor tracks released on High Praise, RESPSIES, Top Pocket, and Cosmic Incantations. Oh, and this groovy number: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNib8T9JYRE&fbclid=IwAR3V73mTxBfxtiqL6FtIilPjyDfCWUH8R7V5lI9XLZnZ6v3Ra1gq4OK9g94 The recent move from Brighton to London has proved a success, earning himself a slot at the revered Dimensions Festival, and some supporting acts in the calibre of Mount Kimbie, Dan Shake and San Proper. The Bside of his record collection takes us on a journey of dramatic and disco infused gems from yesteryear. A masterful collection which often pays tribute to his parents sublime taste; his father an avid disc jockey in the 70/80's, “mullet and everything”. Partner Music explores this rich family history as he continues to build upon it, contributing to the narrative with many wonderful discoveries of his own. Having a lazy Sunday? Why not gently coax it into motion with the opening track ‘A Warm Summer Night', Chic's sultry b-side to the widely celebrated ‘Good Times' - an overlooked treasure tucked away on the flip-side of this classic record. This episode is full of surprises, each one embracing our ears with open arms. The perfect partner for any activity, today, tomorrow… all week. Lando (aka Antaeus Lando Roy) is a DJ/producer from California who's music flavour is "pulsing basslines, trippy melodies, and machine-made funk". Now residing in San Fransico, the American artist really cut his teeth into techno music when moved to Berlin in 2010. There he was able to gain inspiration from worlds techno capital. His time in Berlin allowed Lando to focus those inspirations through his own filter, the result of which you can hear in his musical output. With releases on Ultramajik, Hotflush, and recently DVS1's sub-label Mistress Recordings, Lando is to be taken quite seriously. He has recently collaborated over his new recording imprint Myth Music with close friend and Berlin-based expat Aaron Castle. Bomphcast highly recommends checking the Myth Music catalogue out. His musical output and technical ability as a DJ and selector have earned him sets at some of Europe's most famous techno haunt. Berghain/Panorama Bar, Trouw, Fabric, Sub Club, Space, and the Dimensions Festival; moreover, as well as a residency at Berlin institution Tresor make for quite an impressive CV.

Ashish Jose, better known by his alias Tarqeeb, represents the Motherland with an energetic mix that showcases some of the best dance music India has to offer right now. Tarqeeb began his journey in electronic music in 2012 after stints in metal and psy-trance. The producer focuses largely on DnB and other offshoots of bass music, though he prefers not to confine his sound by labels. Jose also extends his creativity to the art space on Instagram. His sets can vary from deep, sub bass room-shakers to frantic, vigorous DnB – adapted to the crowd and atmosphere. The last couple of years have seen him play in a number of festivals and venues across the world including Dimensions Festival in Croatia, NH7 Weekender, VH1 Supersonic and BASS CAMP festival, as well as opening for the likes of LAFAWNDAH, AMIT and more. Jose does us proud on mix #113 by putting homegrown talent forward with an all-star cast of producers in the alternative dance/electronic spaces. The mix begins on a more mellow, ambient tune with Mumbai producer Echofloat before swiftly gaining speed with Singapore based Indian origin Iyer, who’s been on our radar for his impressive skills in the footwork department. Momentum’s stays steady with RBMA selectee Oceantied, the very talented SickFlip, new kid on the block Spryk as well as some familiar names like Su Real, _RHL, B.R.E.E.D. and more. The mix also features some unreleased music, as well a new outfit called Dasta, which Jose describes as "a secret supergroup which you'll hear more about pretty soon". It ends with Func’s new banger ‘Beast’. Mix #113 is a great indicator of how the scene here has grown in the last couple of years.
