On This Week at Charlestown Road, Jason and Roger revisit Sunday morning’s sermon, “Eyes That See,” digging deeper into three pivotally important things some never see.
You've been showing up, doing the work, trying to live with integrity—and the results aren't there. Policies get worse. People leave. Relationships fracture. So you're left with a brutal question: Is any of this actually worth it? This sermon explores the prophet Jeremiah, who preached justice for 23 years and saw zero measurable success. Through his story and the words of Martin Luther King Jr., we examine what happens when we stop measuring our faithfulness by outcomes and start asking a different question: What if the rightness of something doesn't depend on whether it's winning? What would it mean to commit to a long obedience in the same direction—not because the KPIs look good, but because the work itself is true? For anyone exhausted by activism, burned out on hope, or wondering if they should just give up—this is about finding a way to keep going that doesn't rely on immediate success. It's about planting seeds underground where nobody's watching, trusting what you cannot yet see.

Stereo BRUVs are transforming how scientists study sharks, yet most people have no idea how much we have been missing, and why that matters for conservation. In this episode, we talk with Dr. Kaylee Schmidt about how underwater camera systems are uncovering sharks in places humans rarely go, changing what we think we know about abundance, behavior, and ecosystem health. Shark research has long depended on divers, fishing surveys, and tagging, but those methods can miss species that avoid people or live deeper than we can reach. Kaylee explains how stereo BRUVs allow researchers to study sharks without baiting hooks or disturbing animals, giving a clearer picture of how sharks actually use their habitats. Marine biodiversity takes center stage when Kaylee shares how this technology is being used beyond sharks, including in deep sea environments where data is scarce. One surprising insight from the episode is how often sharks appear in places once assumed to be nearly empty, highlighting how limited human observation has shaped flawed assumptions about ocean life. In this episode of The Perceptive Photographer, I'm exploring why photography is never truly objective. I mean, why is it that two photographers standing in the same place, at the same time, will always see something different? This has always been one of the things that has always fascinated me about photography. Same moment. Different photographs. That difference has very little to do with gear or technical skill and everything to do with perception and intention. It's easy to think of photography as a record of reality. After all, the camera captures what's in front of it. But the camera doesn't decide where to stand, what to include, or when the moment matters. Those decisions belong to the photographer. Every photograph is shaped by our choices, such as what we notice, what we ignore, and what we respond to. We are not recording the world as it is. We're always interpreting and reinterpreting it. Over time, we learn to recognize specific patterns of light, gesture, shape, or mood. And those things that begin to stand out to us, we repeat again and again. Our emotional state plays a role as well. When I'm calm and present, I tend to notice quieter moments. When I'm rushed or distracted, my images often reflect that. In the end, I think we eventually learn that we don't photograph what's there. We photograph what we notice. Once we accept that there's no “right” way to see a scene, the pressure to match someone else's image or expectation disappears. The next time you're out photographing, pause before you raise the camera. Notice what's pulling your attention and what you're leaving behind. You might be surprised by what you find in the viewfinder.

We rush past people every day—but Jesus didn't. How taking an interest in others, can transform someone's life…and ours.
t's the beginning of a new year, for some an exciting time of possibilities and opportunities. For others, it's the beginning of another year of slogging through life feeling blind insignificant. Whatever our emotional state, the fact remains that though we may never see the significance of the work we do, the significance is there. I first encountered the language of working on a world that we will never see when I saw Iris Dement sing it at the 2022 Nowhere Else Festival. It's a captivating, and encouraging, thought. If you fall short on sleep, can you really “catch up” the next night? Many people think so — but our bodies don't quite work that way. This episode begins with what science says about recovering from poor sleep and how to optimize deep sleep when your schedule gets disrupted. https://www.womenshealthmag.com/health/a40511210/deep-sleep/ What makes a song a hit? Trends, personal taste, timing, and luck all play a role — but today, technology shapes popular music more than ever. From how songs are created to how they spread, the path to a hit is constantly evolving. Chris Dalls Riva joins me to unpack it all. In this episode, Kelsi Sheren exposes a shocking case of government corruption involving sitting MPs in Canada who allegedly facilitated euthanasia for a non-resident. Through a leaked FOIA document, she reveals how political pressure was applied to secure a health number for a woman seeking euthanasia, raising serious ethical concerns about the healthcare system and the implications of death tourism. Fraud today doesn't feel anything like it used to. It's not just about somebody skimming a credit card at a gas pump or stealing a check out of the mail. It has gotten personal, messy, emotional. Scammers are building relationships, earning trust, and studying the little details of our lives so they can strike when we're tired, distracted, or dealing with something big. And honestly, most people have no idea how far it's gone. My guest, Ian Mitchell, has spent more than 25 years fighting fraud around the world and leading teams in the financial sector. He's the founder of The Knoble, a nonprofit bringing banks and industry leaders together to protect vulnerable people from scams, human trafficking, and exploitation. Ian has seen the evolution of fraud firsthand, from the old-school days of stolen cards to the organized global crime networks using technology, AI, and human manipulation to scale at a pace we've never experienced before. What stood out to me is Ian's belief that the strongest defense doesn't start with fancy tools or tighter security. It starts at home. Real conversations with our kids about safety online. Checking in on aging parents. Talking openly with people we trust so scammers can't isolate us and break us down. It's serious work, but Ian is hopeful. He believes there are far more good people than bad, and when we look out for each other, we're a lot harder to exploit. Show Notes: [00:58] Ian unexpectedly shifted from music and modeling into the world of fraud prevention. [01:19] Founding The Knoble and building a global network to fight human crimes and protect vulnerable populations. [01:49] A look at Follow the Money, the documentary project raising awareness about exploitation and financial crime. [02:19] Why Ian believes crimes of exploitation have moved directly into our homes and daily lives. [03:08] The early moment when Ian uncovered a major fraud ring while working at an internet company. [06:44] How canceling $300,000 in fraudulent orders changed the direction of his career. [08:11] Reflections on the "wild west" early days of online fraud and security. [11:01] How fraud evolved from stolen cards into emotional manipulation and trust-based scams. [12:49] The post-COVID surge in scams and the shift toward targeting individuals instead of systems. [14:03] Why fighting fraud today requires global coordination and an army of trained professionals. [16:38] Scammers coaching victims to distrust banks, friends, and even family members. [17:05] The longest romance-style scam Ian has seen — an eight-year manipulation before money was ever requested. [18:25] Discussion on timing, trust, and why even smart people can be caught off guard. [22:05] Ian shares his own experience dealing with identity theft and the complexity of proving it wasn't him. [23:22] AI and big data transforming broad scam attempts into precise, personalized attacks. [25:31] The alarming rise of sextortion schemes targeting kids ages 13–16 and why awareness is critical. [26:40] The urgent need for uncomfortable safety conversations within families. [28:09] Why Ian believes the first line of defense isn't technology — it's communication at home. [29:30] The emotional impact on scam victims: shame, isolation, and loss of confidence in judgment. [31:13] How AI can be used for good and why the industry must move quickly to fight back. [40:40] Three essential conversations families should start having right now. [41:21] Protecting children through parental controls, boundaries, and digital safety. [42:42] Encouraging open dialogue with aging parents about financial protection and autonomy. [44:19] Finding balance: staying vigilant without living in fear. [47:57] A hopeful reminder that there are far more good people than bad — and collective action matters. [48:30] Where to find Ian, learn more about The Knoble, and connect with his work. This weekend, we all fell back an hour as daylight savings reared its ugly head once more. When Bryan Kohberger suddenly took a plea deal, the courtroom went silent — and with it, hundreds of pieces of evidence, witness testimony, and forensic detail that were set to define one of the most watched murder trials in America. Now, newly unsealed documents are giving us a chilling glimpse at what the jury would have seen: the DNA on the knife sheath, the phone data that tracked Kohberger's movements, and the professors at Washington State University who were ready to testify about his behavior and his disturbing fascination with Ted Bundy. In this episode, we dive deep into the evidence that never reached the courtroom. From autopsy findings showing skull fractures and defensive wounds — to the Bundy-inspired patterns prosecutors were prepared to lay out — this is the inside story of the case that ended before it began. We'll also look at what's happening inside Idaho's maximum-security prison right now. Records show Kohberger filing grievances, clashing with staff, and trying to control his world through paperwork — the same obsessive behavior that defined him long before his arrest. What did the public lose when this case never went to trial? What truths are still buried in sealed exhibits and redacted reports? And what does the newly unsealed evidence tell us about the mind of the man behind the Idaho student murders? Join Tony Brueski as Hidden Killers pulls back the curtain on the evidence the world was never meant to see — and the haunting parallels between Bryan Kohberger and the killers he studied. In this episode of The Pretend GM Podcast, fantasy football analyst James Koh joins Alfredo Brown for a deep conversation about the 90% we never see in fantasy football. From hidden player factors to the limits of data and analytics, James explains why we only know a fraction of what truly drives player performance — and how understanding that uncertainty can make you a smarter fantasy manager. We talk about the stories behind the stats, how off-field variables shape fantasy outcomes, and what it really means to “do your research” in a game built on incomplete information.

What animals are not kept in captivity? Every 50-100 million years, about 95% of all the living species extinct on our planet. Scientists refer to this process as Holocene Extinction. And today, there are a lot of animals that are on the brink of extinction. For example, one of the rarest mammals on the planet is the Javan Rhino. Less than 70 are left, and they all live in a National Park on the island of Java, Indonesia. Of the 5 total rhino species, they're the most endangered one. Scientists aren't sure how long they live but guess somewhere between 30 – 40 years. But there are other reasons why some animals are not kept in zoos. Even if you absolutely love aquariums and have been to dozens of them, there's one sea creature you'll never ever come across there. Not a single aquarium in the world has a great white shark. In the past, many have tried adding great whites along with other sharks in their tanks, but it never worked out. They'd stop eating and even struggle to swim. Doesn't make for great business either: it's too costly to keep the great shark because a large enough tank will need millions of gallons of water. Learn more about your ad choices. Chantelle Lewis and Jason Arday, co-authors of the book We See Things They'll Never See, join the show to discuss their work. Arday, a professor of sociology of education at the University of Cambridge, and Lewis, an Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Black British Studies at Pembroke College, the University of Oxford, delve into how their experiences as Black, neurodivergent academics influenced their book. Together, they share the motivation behind their work, highlighting the importance of challenging societal infringements and advocating for marginalized communities. Here are my favorite takeaways: We discuss the importance of showing compassion and empathy, especially to those who seem to deserve it the least. As Arday states, "sometimes when people least deserve it, that's when they deserve the most compassion". Lewis explains the book's critical look at the workplace, where neurodivergent individuals are sometimes seen as "superhumans" who can produce more for a capitalist system. This creates a system in which their marginalization is used to uphold a system of oppression. "The way we are marginalized can also be used as a way to keep this system in place," Lewis says. Arday and Lewis propose that to improve society, there must be a move away from the current educational model. This includes the abolition of exams, as they are not necessarily correlated with future success or positive academic outcomes. Lewis argues that "we need to stop measuring education outcomes by just test scores." Follow Dr Chantelle Jessica Lewis' research at Pembroke College, University of Oxford, podcast Surviving Society
I share the exact roadmap I use to hit 100+ Etsy sales fast. You'll learn the mindset shifts to survive the “valley of despair,” how to validate demand (inside and outside Etsy), what barriers to entry mean for your niche, and the simple ways to make your listings irresistible. I also cover building product lines that feed the algorithm, a weekly listing cadence that compounds traffic, how to “follow the breadcrumbs” in your stats, and when to pour fuel on the fire with promos, coupons, and ads (without burning cash). What you'll get: • Mindset map of the entrepreneur journey (and how to push through lows) • Demand research on Etsy + external tools (including a quick URL tweak trick) • Barrier-to-entry decisions for POD vs. higher-skill niches • Differentiation playbook: photos, video, SEO, bonuses, value adds • Product-line strategy to scale winners (and train the algorithm) • Consistent listing schedule that keeps your shop analyzed and surfaced • Data loops: read your stats, double down on what works • Marketing stack: sales, coupons, recover carts/favorites, and when to run ads #EtsyTips #EtsySEO #EtsySeller #SmallBusiness #PrintOnDemand #Ecommerce Grow faster than 99% of Etsy shops
