Richard Fearless presents Metal Box, broadcast from his shipping container studio situated on the peninsula of land between the River Thames and the River Lea in London's East End. Fearless' career as a DJ, founder of cult band Death in Vegas, and head of the independent label Drone have cemented Fearless' reputation as a diverse maker and renowned digger. Expect a deep love of underground electronic music, with Fearless in the mix and the odd guest stopping by. On tonight's Metal Box we have something different, an exclusive two hour live hardware recording of ‘Multiples'. Multiples are a duo consisting of two masters of the craft, Rotterdam's techno hero, Speedy J and no other than Birmingham's finest, Surgeon, recorded live at Fabrik in Madrid. Their new album Two Hours Or Something is out now on STOOR records.
Episode 67 invites a producer, DJ, and live performer who is probably my most requested guest…. I'm happy to welcome @JochemPaap, also known as Speedy J. With a string of successful releases on Warp and Plus 8 throughout the 90s and early 2000s, Speedy J's name became synonymous with a special kind of driving, peak-time techno that helped define the genre. Although he's explored ambient, sampling, and the world of audio-visual, his deepest dive has been into live performance and improvisation, both solo and in collaboration with fellow techno stalwarts like Chris Liebing, Surgeon, and Lucy. His pandemic-inspired project STOOR is just the latest in a decade of devotion to the craft of live performance, welcoming other artists into the fold for an entirely improvised live show that can last as long as eight hours. In this conversation, Speedy J and I explore the intricacies of improvisation, the thrill of the moment, and how he captures captures that excitement in the studio. ++ Music: "Klave" - Speedy J (2010) (2021 remaster) "The Fun Equations" - Speedy J (1995) (2021 remaster) "The Oil Zone" - Speedy J (1995) (2021 remaster) ++ Follow AIR Instagram: www.instagram.com/_airpodcast/ Patreon: www.patreon.com/airpodcast Substack: airpodcast.substack.com/

Speedy J is a key figure in the history of Techno, most recently with the development of his improvisational collaborative project Stoor. Check out some of the epic ADE performances: 2023 JakoJako x Karenn (Blawan & Pariah) x Surgeon x Speedy J - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9D0sPIaSY4 2022 Dasha Rush x Rod20 x Rødhåd x Surgeon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMfbX6714j0 So of course we discuss that, but also the 30th anniversary of his landmark album Ginger. Released as part of the Warp Records Artificial Intelligence series, it was a key plank in the run of releases that made such a huge impact on electronic music. And an album that I smoked a lot of weed to as a teenager. This is a bit shorter than usual, but it's a good one... you're gonna enjoy it.

I have a handful of mixes that i return to regularly. Orangewarrior's Retro 97 Mix is one. Warp's Artificial Intelligence album was also recently reissued on vinyl which has got me back into listening electronic tracks from the early-mid 90s, and seeking out the Orangewarrior tracklist. I did have a pause before i created my own mix - is it ok to take another DJ's tracklist and use it? I'm at peace with that, if i give 3 tributes i think: 1 to Orangewarrior for a fantastic mix, which i strongly recommend you check out (see below) 1 to Headphone Commute for this and other amazing mixes on his channel 1 to all the brilliant artists and tracks So - my interpretation of OW's mix, featuring B12, FSOL, Aphex Twin, Speedy J, Nightmares on Wax, Peshay, Bola, Beaumont Hannant, La Funk Mob, Boards of Canada, LFO, DJ Shadown, Dj Food, The Orb, Air, Link, Photek, Meat Beat Manifesto, Plaid, RAC, Sun Electric and the Sabres of Paradise Headphonecommute – Orangewarrior-retro-97-mix

Since the mid 90's, Vincent Koreman a.k.a. Drvg Cvltvre has been working on his own blend of dystopian acid, no wave and experimental house. Respected in the international underground for his groundbreaking work in experimental techno and electro as RA-X in the 90′s on labels like Bunker and KK Records, Koreman comes from a DIY punk background, opting for hard work and political stance rather than hollow pose. Drvg Cvltvre's music takes the speed down a notch to emphasis on the heaviness of sound and using the space left between the pounding kicks to build melancholic melodies that seem to grow out of thin air. A blend of dark techno and deep house with lots of experiment, influenced in equal parts by Suicide, Sun Ra and Terrence Dixon. His discography is a staggering collection of releases on labels like Warp, Permanent Vacation, Viewlexx, Pinkman, Omnidisc, the legendary Nervous Records and his own imprint New York Haunted, that has been gaining momentum as a bastion of cool, experimental house & techno in an increasingly stale and bland music scene. Drvg Cvltvre is a sought after live act and dj that has been playing everywhere from Shanghai to New York and from Sydney to Helsinki, leaving crowds in awe of his hardware live sets and stellar dj selections. Drvg Cvltvre's tracks are staples in several well known Djs sets. His cuts get played by Nina Kraviz, Speedy J, I-F, John Talabot, DJ Stingray, Juan Atkins, Jackmaster, Marcel Dettmann, Helena Hauff and many others. He's been featured and interviewed by Djmag, Mixmag, Resident Advisor and The Wire. -- 081: Drvg Cvltvre from Tilburg, Netherlands https://soundcloud.com/drvgcvltvre https://www.facebook.com/drvgcvltvreofficial
