"Do not be anxious about anything," writes Paul. That's easy to say when you're not up against a pandemic, unemployment, gun violence and toxic cultural divisiveness. We all desire the "peace that surpasses all understanding," yet each day it seems less and less achievable. In this week's podcast we each talk about the ways we try to reduce the anxiety level in our lives even while acknowledging how difficult that is to do. Also, we briefly discuss a USA Today call to remove Oral Roberts University from the NCAA Tourney over its non-conforming opinion on same-sex marriage.

In this homily which was part of the Mardi Gras service at St. George, The Rev. Janet Richardson, Assistant to the Rector, reminds us of the futility of worrying. As the gospel reading for the day points out, we are loved by God and He will take care of our needs. She states that nothing can be gained by worrying and that worrying may cause us to miss out on the happiness of today. She concludes that we should strive for God's Kingdom and particularly during the upcoming season of Lent. God wants us to be happy, to have faith, and to trust him. Are you happy? No, not what your social media posts say. I’m asking if you’re genuinely happy. While I’m blessed beyond measure, am devoted to practicing gratitude, and generally quite joyful, I’m not immune to sadness. I’m a human going through the human experience like we all are. I’m sure you can relate. Since 2020 had more than its fair share of challenging moments with little breaks from my daily 150% grind mode, I started reflecting on what makes happiness. Specifically, how to be more strategic about switching on the feel good chemicals especially when counting blessings doesn’t quite feel like enough. Being intentional about grasping your happiness is a non-negotiable that many of us typically have readily on the bargaining table. We ought to stop that. A happy you is the best you - not only for yourself, but for your relationships and the world around you. While establishing habits to activate the brain’s feel good chemicals can be difficult, it’s certainly worth it. Hopefully, this #YapSnacks episode leaves you motivated to better help your brain help you.
