Adison Kapitzke started her 2025-2026 season with a bang, throwing an indoor personal best in the shot put that's currently #1 in The Summit League. After several trips to the podium at indoor & outdoor conference meets for runner-up finishes, the junior is ready to take another step to the top to win her first individual conference title. Listen to Adison share about her journey from competitive figure skater to thrower, her goals for this season, and why the 2026 Bison women's team is one to be reckoned with.
Stephen Clunis has never won a medal at a conference championship meet. Would you believe us if we told you he's ranked #11 in the entire country for the 60 meter dash? The University of Missouri Kansas City senior ran 6.61 seconds in his first meet of the year and isn't looking back, not just hoping to win a conference title but to compete on the NCAA's biggest stage. Listen to Stephen share about his journey, including plenty of injuries and betting on himself to transfer to UMKC and start again as well as his individual & team goals for the 2026 season.
HEY! We encourage you to listen to this show as part of the "Happy Hour with John Gaskins" daily podcast, which you can find at SiouxFallsLive.com, and most podcast platforms like the one you find here! So, if you enjoy the topics Matt & John cover, you'll get those topics, plus relevant local guests, every Monday through Thursday on Happy Hour... so we highly recommend you check that out! What could possibly be a bigger local sports story than South Dakota State All-America offensive lineman Quentin Christensen turning down a $1 million NIL offer from an SEC school recently? Not much, but the SDSU women's basketball team losing a Summit League regular season basketball game for the first time in 68 contests — which spans nearly four calendar years — was quite a whopper over the weekend. Those were two of the main topics in a 75-minute weekly "Nobody's Listening Anyway" podcast on Happy Hour with Matt Zimmer on Monday. Zimmer confirmed with confidence in his sources that Christensen joins fellow South Dakota native Chase Mason as Jackrabbits who turned down seven-figure NIL offers. This comes three days after the two week portal window closed for players to declare their free agency. SDSU head coach Dan Jackson will join Happy Hour on Wednesday to remark on that, plus the Jacks' top portal additions (many from Div. II) and, as importantly, lack of portal losses this season. Meanwhile, North Dakota State finally became the first team to beat the Jackrabbit women since USD took down SDSU twice in 2022 — in a Feb. 5 regular season game and again in the Summit League tournament championship game on March 8. This means the Bison ended a 54-game overall streak for the Jacks against conference opponents. So why was Saturday the day? How did NDSU pull this off on the Jacks' home court? And what does this mean for SDSU and the rest of the league for the rest of the season, now that (at least for a game) the walls have cracked? Zim has answers and also explains why he feels the SDSU men will still be a threat in Sioux Falls in March despite a 10-10 record and 3-2 league mark that includes last Wednesday's loss to first place and still undefeated-in-conference NDSU. Part of the chat about the two Bison basketball wins was the large and palpable crowds in both Brookings and Fargo for the showdowns with the Jacks. This led to a larger discussion about declining attendance the last several years at local and regional college basketball games in general. Well, except at SDSU (for the most part). Zim and the host pick apart why not as many people go to games despite plenty of the Div. I and Div. II teams in the Dakotas being consistently decent-to-great. The pod's plane lands in Minneapolis with a word about the Minnesota Vikings and how they didn't fit into the playoff picture in a year when things were far more ripe-for-the-taking than most.

Indiana is the No. 1 football team in America, while Nebraska sports the No. 8 men's basketball team. Let that sink in. In a "Nobody's Listening Anyway" episode that included plenty of the usual Jackrabbits, Coyotes, FCS, transfer port and Summit League basketball banter, Sioux Falls Live sports editor Matt Zimmer and the Happy Hour host took some time to digest this "what planet are we on" concept — Hoosiers football and Huskers basketball on heaters. Zim explains why he is enjoying Curt Cignetti and Indiana's rise, and not just because it is a once-in-a-lifetime rags-to-riches football story. Plus, Zim is engages the host — not just a Husker football zealot but a long-suffering "Nebrasketball" nut — about the excitement of Fred Hoiberg's squad potentially taking Big Red basketball to where it has never been. Other topics covered: * Why not nearly as many USD fans will become nearly as engaged in Hawkeye football with L.J. Phillips playing in Iowa as SDSU fans who hopped on the train with Mark Gronowski * Griffin Wilde getting a much more experienced and famous offensive coordinator at Northwestern — former Oregon, 49ers, and Eagles head coach Chip Kelly — than his former SDSU OC Zach Lujan * Former SDSU and Washington State offensive coordinator Danny Freund landing not with former SDSU head coach Jimmy Rogers at Iowa State, but back at North Dakota, where he was the OC before coming to Brookings in 2024 and Pullman in '25 * The monster basketball showdowns SDSU's men and women have with North Dakota State this week * Why O'Gorman boys basketball coach Derek Robey — who announced Friday that after 40 seasons and six state titles that this season will be his last — is "one of the most underrated coaches in South Dakota history," not just for high school hoops, but all sports at all levels.
Two teams will enter undefeated on Saturday in conference play, and one will leave with their first Summit League loss of the season when St. Thomas plays NDSU in Fargo on Saturday afternoon. After a big win for the Tommies on Thursday night against North Dakota it's “game on” for a big Saturday tilt. The Tommie men are tied for first place in the CCHA heading into a weekend series hosting Bemidji State. Congrats to coach Caruso who will be inducted into the Minnesota Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame. So, if you enjoy the topics Matt & John cover, you'll get those topics, plus relevant local guests, every Monday through Thursday on Happy Hour... so we highly recommend you check that out!How strong are the brands of both Jackrabbits and Coyotes football heading into the 2026 season? It was not a topic on the docket of hosts John Gaskins and Matt Zimmer for the first "Nobody's Listening Anyway" podcast of the new year, but that is the beauty of the show — a natural barstool conversation, "Happy Hour with John Gaskins" style, that leads down unplanned roads. The "brands" of South Dakota's two Div. I football programs were dissected after John and Matt discussed the early transfer portal headlines for SDSU and USD. Nothing much new has popped since the December news that two Jackrabbits who would potentially be big money Power Four transfers (Chase Mason and Quentin Christensen) announced they were staying in Brookings, while two Coyotes decided to leave Vermillion to seek greener pastures (L.J. Phillips and Larenzo Fenner). The bigger picture is what second year head coaches Dan Jackson and Travis Johansen — who both tackled massive portal losses before their first seasons started — are doing to establish and maintain strong brands that will allow stability and success no matter how brutal portal combat gets year after year. And what about the rest of the FCS? Did Montana State and Illinois State breaking the nine-season streak of either North Dakota State or SDSU playing for (and winning) the national title mean there is more parity, or should we expect the usual suspects back in 2026?And how about Monday night's game? It felt like Redbirds lost it more than the Bobcats won, and John and Matt don't hold back on ISU's collapse. Next, a dive into the early Summit League men's and women's basketball seasons. Speaking of brands and identities, what do nonconference slates and early league battles suggest for things to come in a couple of months once the tournament comes back to Sioux Falls? Will the SDSU women go unbeaten in league play for a fourth consecutive season since Dawn Plitzuweit left USD? How much stronger of challengers will the Coyotes be? On the men's side, is there any clear favorite? And what do we make of USD's M*A*S*H unit and how that affects the program moving beyond this season? The show ends back on the gridiron, where both hosts say "I told you so" on the Minnesota Vikings turning down Aaron Rodgers in the offseason. Considering the shaky ability and availability of J.J. McCarthy in his first season, should Kevin O'Connell reach out to Rodgers or another veteran again... or ride it out with the kid and give him time he may need to pop?The answer to both could be yes. Hear why. Finally, John and Matt try to make sense of Alabama's 38-3 humiliation from Indiana in the Rose Bowl and what legs Kalen DeBoer has to stand on heading into his third year. A history lesson from his early years as head coach at the University of Sioux Falls could lend a hint.
They just can't believe it. To some — especially college football fans outside of South Dakota and the FCS — it just doesn't make any sense. Why would 6'4, 230 lb., bodybuilder-framed, rocket-armed, runaway freight train fast Chase Mason stay at South Dakota State for his final season of college eligibility when he has already been offered over $1 million to play at least one Power Four school (according to his SDSU head coach)? Beyond the life-changing money, Mason could potentially raise his NFL stock — and there is plenty, according to NFL scouts Mason and Dan Jackson converse — by playing against the highest level of CFB competition in front of 70,000-plus seat stadiums and millions of weekly national TV viewers. NFL stock aside, just the P4 QB1 experience alone appears intoxicating and once-in-a-lifetime, as one of Mason's former teammates Mark Gronowski made it appear at times at Iowa after leaving SDSU for a reported $1,000,000 to $2,000,000. Mason made it clear in his 68-minute chat with Happy Hour on Monday — "never in a million years" did he consider transferring, and no prospects of seven figure NIL dough will change his mind and convince him to enter the CFB portal, which will be open Jan. 2-16. The former Viborg-Hurley state champion quarterback, FBS-offered, and University of Nebraska baseball player said NFL scouts have told Jackson that he does not need to play at a higher level in 2026 to raise his stock. But more than anything, Mason cited over and over again during the Monday chat that, to him, nothing compares to the culture and "brotherhood" he experiences at SDSU and he doesn't want to discover the downsides to exploring if the grass is greener beyond the Benjamins at a big-league school. Again, some wonder — there has to be a catch, right? Perhaps he isn't worth mondo money and knows it and he actually doesn't have any higher-level interest. Perhaps anyone who claims he is a legitimate NFL QB prospect is either overblowing that notion or flat-out lying. Listening to Mason's entire Happy Hour chat could clear some confusion, but for good measure, Tuesday's show features the Sioux Falls Live sports reporter who has covered Mason closer than anyone the last seven years back to his high school days. Matt Zimmer helps the Twitter keyboard warriors and fans of other fan bases make sense of all the Mason-is-staying hype from the last 24 hours. In particular, Zim revisits Mason's past and why he transferred from Nebraska to SDSU and changed sports in the first place four years ago. NFL? There's a Jackrabbit track record of the last decade that's beyond decent. There's a comparison between Gronowski and Mason regarding their NFL stock that Zim finds worth noting. And now that Mason is coming back, should we project SDSU to take a leap back to the status of the FCS elite after a 9-5 season that ended in the second round? What kind of talent can we assume is coming back to surround Mason to make a national championship run in 2026? (After all, the portal window isn't open until Jan. 2-16, so nobody really knows which 2025 Jacks besides Mason are going to stay). Zim lays out his current outlook and explains why Jackson is looking more to the Div. II and NAIA ranks than the FBS for transfers to fill positions of need. Speaking of South Dakotans announcing they are staying in their powerhouse programs, Zim dives into Kalen DeBoer's remaining the coach at Alabama despite being a floated name in the media as a candidate at Michigan and Penn State. Why is Alabama — as hot as the seat appears to be sometimes — a better gig for DeBoer than the jobs in Ann Arbor and Happy Valley? Then, some words about the 7-6 start for SDSU men's hoops, which included Monday's 87-72 loss to Wyoming. Does this feel like a "down" year without a clear Summit League star like Oscar Cluff, Zeke Mayo, Baylor Scheierman, David Jenkins, or Mike Daum?

How can you not have Minnesota Timberwolves fever, especially on the precipice of a showdown full of stars, storylines, and bad blood between the Wolves and Golden State Warriors?Jimmy Butler — whose belligerence and self-engineered exit eventually sunk the squad into the abyss — returns to face unruly Target Center fans, not to mention the superstar who has lifted the Wolves from that abyss, Anthony Edwards.Steph Curry — a Hall-of-Famer who has spearheaded four NBA titles in the Bay Area while the Wolves have mostly wallowed in misery — returns to face the team that passed him over twice in the 2009 Draft. Then, there's the Big Man Battle Royale with Rudy Goebert and Draymond Green, who choked Goebert in a game last year and trash-talked him from his pulpit on the TNT set. To add to the spice: ANT said publicly before the season started he couldn't wait to face the Warriors in the playoffs because Green "talks so much trash." John Gaskins and Matt Zimmer carve into the carnival to lead off this week's "Nobody's Listening Anyway" from Gateway Lounge, then take a stab at what to make of the tepid but not terrible Minnesota Twins. How much life will the returning-from-injury Royce Lewis give them? The latest heroics of Byron Buxton lead to this discussion:Is Buxton the most electrifying Twins player of all time? Does he belong on the Mount Rushmore of Most Electrifying Minnesota Pro Sports Athletes of the last 30 years? Which Wolves and Vikings players make that cut?Closer to home, what is there to make of the recently-announced partnership between the Summit League and Missouri Valley Conference, with the commissioner of the latter league taking over as commissioner of the Missouri Valley Football Conference and Summit League leader Josh Fenton being tabbed "Executive Advisor" in the MVFC?Finally, South Dakota State's 2025 season opening football opponent has an even more turned-over roster than the Jackrabbits, and the Augusta baseball and softball teams are heating up as the calendar flips to May. Why have the Vikings been so consistently successful in those diamond sports for over a decade?
