L'autrice, âgée de 57 ans, nous reçoit dans la chambre de bonne dans le Marais, à Paris, où elle écrit ses livres, à l'occasion de la publication ces derniers mois de son roman, « Jour de Ressac ». Maylis de Kerangal évoque son enfance dans les immeubles Perret, au Havre, auprès d'un père navigateur et d'une mère prof puis au foyer à s'occuper de ses cinq enfants. La télé occupe une place centrale, même si ses parents aiment organiser de nombreuses sorties en extérieur. Elle s'intéresse très vite à des livres empreints d'une certaine noirceur, des contes de fées à Emile Zola. Puis elle rejoint Paris pour ses études, se tournant vers les sciences humaines. Elle travaille à la confection de guides de voyage, doit s'arrêter pour des raisons de santé ét écrit son premier roman. L'écriture deviendra très vite alors le centre de sa vie. Maylis de Kerangal parle longuement de son travail littéraire, de son rapport au lieu, à la langue, aux sentiments et de son dernier livre « Jour de ressac ». Elle revient, enfin, sur son rapport à la mode : « J'ai une passion pour des vêtements que je ne peux pas porter. J'aime beaucoup la haute couture, mais je n'ai pas forcément les moyens de m'en ­acheter. J'aime l'idée de l'exclusivité, de la ­perfection, aussi. L'idée d'un vêtement qui soit issu d'ateliers où les gestes et les matières relèvent d'un certain savoir-faire. Nằm trên bờ Bắc của Đại Tây Dương ở Nam Mỹ, vùng hải ngoại của Pháp Guyane từng là nơi giam giữ hơn 500 tù nhân chính trị “An Nam” từ những năm 1930 đến Đệ Nhị Thế Chiến. Đến từ xứ Đông Dương cách 17 000km, những tù nhân được coi là những lao động, khai hoang những khu rừng rậm Amazon cho Pháp. Một câu chuyện ít người biết đến, bị lãng quên trong lịch sử của Việt Nam và Pháp. Tại Guyane, vùng hải ngoại của Pháp ở Nam Mỹ, con đường ven bờ rừng được nhiều người dân và du khách lui tới đi dạo trong những ngày nghỉ cuối tuần ở xã Montsinéry-Tonnégrande, cách thành phố Cayenne 45 km về phía đông.Ẩn sau các tán cây là các khối bê tông dài như tường thành bị phong rêu, phủ kín dây leo, khiến không ít người đặt nghi vấn về câu chuyện lịch sử ẩn đằng sau. Đó cũng là trường hợp của nhà sử học người Pháp Christèle Dedebant, kết hợp nhiều sự kiện ngẫu nhiên, tình cờ đi dạo trên con đường mòn đó, tình cờ nghe về câu chuyện nhà tù khổ sai An Nam – Le Bagne des anamites, và tình cờ gặp được người thân của những cựu tù nhân để tiến hành đào sâu tìm hiểu ngọn nguồn, vẽ lại bức tranh đầy đủ về hành trình vượt đại dương và số phận của 500 tù nhân Việt bị lưu đày ở Guyanne dưới thời Pháp thuộc.Trong cuốn sách “Le Bagne des annamites, les derniers déportés politiques en Guyane” được nhà xuất bản Actes Sud cho ra mắt độc giả hồi tháng Năm, nhà sử học Christèle Dedebant lật lại những trang sử về bối cảnh các cuộc cách mạng ở Việt Nam những năm 1930, làm tiền đề cho tuyên bố độc lập của Hồ Chí Minh vào năm 1945. Tiêu biểu là khởi nghĩa Yên Bái, dưới sự lãnh đạo của Việt Nam Quốc Dân Đảng, nổ ra vào tháng Hai năm 1930 nhưng đã nhanh chóng bị thực dân Pháp đàn áp.Khoảng 670 người đã bị bắt giữ, bỏ tù hay hành quyết, chủ yếu là những người tham gia vào phong trào kháng chiến của Việt Nam Quốc Dân Đảng, hay phong trào Đông Kinh Nghĩa Thục. Trong số đó, 538 nam tù nhân, từ 17 đến 50 tuổi, được xét là “đủ khả năng vượt đại dương”, trên con tàu Martinière, đưa đến giam giữ ở Guyane.Đọc thêm : "Lính thợ Đông Dương" : Những người lính thầm lặng tại Pháp trong Thế Chiến IIKhi đến xứ Nam Mỹ xa xôi, những người này không bị giam giữ tại các nhà tù của chính quyền thuộc địa vốn có mà ở những khu vực đặc biệt được xây dựng dành riêng cho họ, bị đưa đi lao động khổ sai, giúp chính quyền thực dân Pháp khai hoang vùng đất mới rộng lớn này. Khi tách họ khỏi các nhà tù truyền thống cũng là để tránh sự lây lan của tinh thần dân tộc chủ nghĩa trong các xà lim ở Guyane.Cuốn sách đưa người đọc tìm hiểu lại cuộc sống thường nhật của các tù nhân, phải tự mình xây dựng nơi sinh hoạt chung, tại nơi giam giữ mình, trong điều kiện vệ sinh nghèo nàn. Nhiều người mắc các bệnh về đường hô hấp hay đường ruột. 10 tù nhân đã bỏ mạng. Một số tìm cách đào tẩu, tránh cảnh lao động khắc nghiệt và tránh bị lây nhiễm.Đến Guyane, những tù nhân chính trị An Nam được coi là “những lao động” VIP, “có lợi ích khi giữ tinh thần và thể chất cho họ” để khai phá những vùng lãnh thổ mà chúng ta chưa biết đến ở Guyane”, theo trích dẫn trong cuốn sách từ tư liệu của bộ Thuộc Địa.Nhà sử học cũng nhắc lại sự thay đổi chính quyền ở Guyane vào năm 1936, và dẫn đến việc trả tự do cho một số tù nhân, nhưng lại bị hạn chế di chuyển, không được phép rời khỏi lãnh thổ này. Một số được cấp đất rừng để khai hoang, canh tác, hay được phép làm việc tại doanh nghiệp khai thác khoáng sản ở Guyane. Đến khi Đệ Nhị Thế Chiến kết thúc, các nhà tù tại Guyane lần lượt bị đóng cửa. Những tù nhân Đông Dương cuối cùng được trả tự do từ năm 1949. Mãi đến năm 1963 họ mới được đưa trở về lại quê hương. Một nửa trong số những người bị lưu đày đã quyết định ở lại Cayenne, sinh sống “trong khu phố người Hoa”, trên thực tế là những người Đông Dương. ***Để hiểu thêm về câu chuyện của những tù nhân chính trị này, RFI Tiếng Việt đã phỏng vấn bà Christèle Dedebant, tác giả của cuốn sách “Le bagne des Annamites : Les derniers déportés politiques en Guyane”- tạm dịch là “Nhà tù khổ sai An Nam : những tù nhân chính trị cuối cùng bị lưu đày ở Guyane” Điều gì đã thôi thúc bà thực hiện cuốn sách này ?Christèle Dedebant : Điều khiến tôi quan tâm nghiên cứu chủ đề này, đó là khoảng cách giữa Guyane và Đông Dương, đưa người đi đày đến một nơi hoàn toàn xa lạ, cách hơn 17 000 km. Tôi thấy đó là điều không tưởng. Hơn nữa, bối cảnh lịch sử, vào năm 1931, khi những tù nhân Việt bị đưa đến Guyane, đó cũng là thời điểm huy hoàng của đế quốc thực dân Pháp. Tất cả chỉ được phép rời đi mãi cho đến năm 1963. Trong 30 năm đó, thế giới đã thay đổi, và nhất là quan hệ giữa Việt Nam và Pháp.                                  Do đó, tôi đã đặt câu hỏi về số phận của những tù nhân này, họ đã trải qua chuyện gì. Họ bị đưa khỏi Việt Nam đến Guyane dưới thân phận những tù nhân của xứ thuộc địa, không phải là công dân Pháp. Số phận của họ ra sao khi các nhà tù bị dỡ bỏ. Dĩ nhiên là các câu trả lời khá phức tạp bởi vì một số đã ở lại Guyane, một số trở về Việt Nam, một số khác thì đến Pháp sinh sống.Trong cuốn sách, bà nêu ra những hiện thực tàn bạo của chế độ thực dân, để lại những vết sẹo vẫn còn hiện hữu cho đến nay. Trong quá trình viết ra cuốn sách này, có điều gì mới được phát hiện ra khiến bà bị bàng hoàng trước hiện thực lịch sử hay không ? Christèle Dedebant : Có rất nhiều chuyện khiến tôi bị sốc. Đầu tiên là một ý tưởng dã man trong tư tưởng thuộc địa, là ý định đưa 528 tù nhân đến lưu đày cách xa nhà hàng ngàn km để khai hoang một vùng lãnh thổ còn rộng hơn cả Irland. Đối với tôi đó là một ý tưởng điên rồ, đày những tù nhân xa xứ đến khai khai hoang vùng Amazon và họ không có ai tiếp sức hỗ trợ. Nhiều người trong số họ đã bỏ mạng vì bệnh ho gà, hay khó thích ứng với khí hậu. Kế hoạch này rõ ràng là thất bại. Mặc dù những người được gọi là dân An Nam, lại là những tù nhân được đối đãi tử tế nhất so với những người đến từ Bắc Phi hay các tù nhân Pháp, vì được coi là những người tiên phong, khai hoang đất đai.Thêm vào đó, tất cả các nhà tù đều áp dụng luật kép, tức là khi các tù nhân đã mãn án tù, nhưng lại không thể trở về nước và phải ở lại Guyane để bổ sung dân số vốn ít ỏi ở Guyane, để tiếp tục khai hoang lãnh thổ này.Trong những chương cuối của cuốn sách, bà đề cập đến số phận của những cựu tù nhân chính trị, lựa chọn trở về nước, nhưng lại bị chính quê hương chối bỏ. Lập trường của Việt Nam lúc đó cũng không rõ ràng. Các bài viết của nhà báo Danh Đức trên báo Tuổi Trẻ và về nhà tù An Nam ở Guyane, thu thập lời chứng của nhiều cựu tù nhân chính trị, chỉ ra sự nghi ngờ với những cựu tù nhân này, và mối liên hệ thực sự với Việt Nam Quốc Dân Đảng. Các bài báo về nhà tù người Việt ở Guyane cuối cùng đã bị kiểm duyệt vào năm 2008. Bà có lý giải nào về điều này được không ?Christèle Dedebant : Lập trường của chính phủ Việt Nam không khác nhiều so với các nước khác khi phải đối diện với câu hỏi có nên tiếp nhận những người tị nạn đã bị lưu đày biệt xứ trong 3 thập kỷ hay không. Bởi không ai rõ họ đã trở thành người như thế nào trong suốt quãng thời gian đó. Ban đầu, khi bị bắt đem đi, họ là những người dân tộc chủ nghĩa, một số là quan chức cấp cao trong Việt Nam Quốc Dân Đảng, ví dụ như ông Bằng mà tôi nêu trong cuốn sách. Tất cả đều theo Cộng Sản, họ đều tôn thờ Hồ Chí Minh.Có một chi tiết khiến nhà xuất bản của tôi chú ý là vào năm 1932, có thông tin là Hồ Chí Minh qua đời, tang lễ của lãnh đạo Cộng sản Việt đã được tổ chức trong chính nhà tù. Nhưng cuối cùng họ biết được thông tin đó không xác thực.Ở Guyane, gần như không có sự bất đồng nào giữa các phe phái, và họ không đủ đông đảo để làm điều đó. Một số được trả tự do trở về Việt Nam vào những năm 1950-1960, thế nhưng lại không nhận được sự tiếp đón như họ mong đợi, mà bị nghi ngờ.Đó là một chuyện đáng buồn vì họ bị cả hai phe vứt bỏ. Nhưng tôi cho rằng trong thời chiến, đó là điều thường xảy ra. Trong cuốn sách, tôi có đề cập đến trường hợp của ông Yến. Vào những năm 70, ông Yến đã được yêu cầu làm gián điệp nhưng không chấp nhận làm việc đó. Tuy nhiên, những cựu tù nhân như ông có thể bị coi là những kẻ chỉ điểm.Để viết lại câu chuyện lịch sử này một cách hoàn chỉnh nhất, bà đã dành nhiều năm tìm kiếm tư liệu từ cả kho lưu trữ của Pháp đến những bài báo bằng tiếng Việt. Lý do mà bà viết cuốn sách này là gì ? Đâu là thông điệp mà bà muốn gửi cho độc giả ?Christèle Dedebant : Trong quá trình tìm kiếm, tôi đã gặp được con cháu của những tù nhân này ở Guyane, mà thông thường họ không muốn nói về xuất thân của cha mẹ vì đó là một câu chuyện nhiều đau thương và phức tạp. Đôi khi chính cha mẹ họ cũng không muốn nhắc đến và muốn lật sang trang mới. Những tù nhân bị đày đến Guyane, đa số không phải là những kẻ tội phạm nguy hiểm mà chỉ là những tội danh nhỏ, và cũng có nhiều chính trị gia, trong đó có gia đình của ông Yến, tự hào là một người phản chiến chống lại chế độ thuộc địa.Đó là những người đến từ Đông Dương, ở Guyane, chẳng ai có thể phát âm tên họ một cách rõ ràng, thậm chí viết sai tên, người ta không biết họ tên gì. Con cháu họ thường không nói tiếng Việt nữa. Cuốn sách mà tôi viết là mong muốn trao lại một mảnh ký ức cho những người đó.Về phía Pháp, theo bà, cho đến nay, Paris nhìn nhận lịch sử thuộc địa ở Đông Dương như thế nào ?Christèle Dedebant : Nhìn chung, tại Pháp, ký ức về chiến tranh Algérie đã lấn át những phần lịch sử khác. Đối với Pháp, tôi cho rằng chiến tranh Đông Dương chỉ là một cuộc chiến xa xưa dù nhiều chuyện kinh hoàng đã xảy ra. Nhiều người lính được điều đến chiến đấu ở Đông Dương, sau đó đã bị thuyên chuyển đến Algérie.2024 là năm kỷ niệm 70 năm trận Điện Biên Phủ và cuốn sách mà tôi viết, trên thực tế chỉ là một yếu tố bị lãng quên. Những tù nhân này đã bị lãng quên trong một cuộc chiến bị cho vào quên lãng.Nhiều người đã hỏi tôi rằng, tại sao tôi không có nguồn gốc Việt Nam, cũng không phải từ hải ngoại, tại sao tôi lại quan tâm đến câu chuyện của những tù nhân này. McClain burst onto the marathoning scene winning the Mesa Marathon in Feb. 2022 and then securing a U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials qualifying mark of 2:29:25 at Grandma's Marathon in June 2023. She has been coaching herself. Even after the signing, she will remain in Arizona and will still coach herself. McClain is the Olympic team alternate, which means if O'Keeffe, Sisson or Lindwurm were to get injured and unable to race in Paris, she would be called in as the replacement. “I just really enjoyed getting here. Maybe not the whole last eight years – it's been a road and a journey – but the last year or two of running has been so fun. I know it's been a whole thing that I don't have a coach, don't have an agent, don't have a sponsor. But I literally have just been running because I love it. It's been so freeing and there's been no pressure. I think I needed to step away from that infrastructure and that approach to the sport for a little bit. And it's just been so fun. I think enjoying the process, not having that pressure coming into the trials – I had nothing to lose. I knew I had to be smart, that it could go sideways if I wasn't. Getting here healthy was 100% the focus and enjoying every moment of training.” Jess McClain (née Tonn) stunned America on Saturday when she finished fourth at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. She ran 2:25:46 for a personal best by nearly four minutes. She is unsponsored. She has a full-time job as the executive director of the Love Up Foundation. She also works as a marketing consultant. Before all of that, many in the track and field community remember her as Jess Tonn – the former Brooks Beast 5000m specialist and an All-American at Stanford. Does this Shutter make you shudder? I'll see myself out... Synopsis After a night out with friends, a photographer named Tun and his girlfriend Jane are driving home when they accidentally hit a woman in the street. Instead of helping her, Tun convinces Jane to run to avoid responsibility. In the days after Tun starts to notice strange artifacts in his photos. They soon realize that this isn't regular photography, its…G-G-G-Ghost photograph. As the photo ghost continues to haunt them, they try to unravel the mystery behind why she is haunting them.  Review of Shutter (2004) This is a pretty ok movie. It's pretty run of the mill formula of “here's a paranormal phenomena thats talked about on Discovery channel, lets wrap a movie around it.” It loses points for relying way too much on ghost pikaboo and disorientating fakeouts. I think they would have done better trying to scare the audience with jumpscares, and focused on the drama/mystery more. The repetition of jump scares and creepy photos throughout the second act are only interrupted by confusing non-sequiter appearances of one of Tun's friends, Tonn, asking desperately for photographs before his untimely death. It all makes sense in the end, but the pacing and editing were off so it feels like the first half of the movie crashed into a second movie halfway through. The story behind the ghost is the most compelling part of the movie, and unfortunately they leave most of that until the third act.  Overall it was an interesting story with pacing issues, but at an hour and thirty minute runtime, it never really outstayed its welcome. Score 5/10
