This lecture discusses the 20th century Analytic philosopher, Thomas Nagel's essay "What Is It Like To Be A Bat", and focuses upon he portion of his article in which he begins to explore what subjective experience of other species would be and whether we have the capacity to imagine or understand what it is like to be to be that animal. He selects bats in particular since they are mammals but have a very different sensorium from us, in that they rely upon echolocation and have weak eyesight. This lecture discusses the 20th century Analytic philosopher, Thomas Nagel's essay "What Is It Like To Be A Bat", and focuses upon the first part of the article, in which Nagel raises a number of general problems for adopting a physicalist reductionist analysis of mind to resolve the mind-body problem by explaining conscious experience in terms of something non-mental, e.g. the brain. "When I train candidates I always say start with Freud, learn the interpersonalist, learn the object relations folks, know from what you come, even if you want to be a radical interpersonalist, a radical relationalist, because having that stuff in your back pocket is organizing and creates an ideal to which you can aspire or choose not to follow, but at least you'll know what you're not following. My perspective on this stuff really comes from the idea that before we are free to break the rules, we need to know what the rules are and we need to be well grounded in them." Episode Description: We begin by appreciating the evolution of some fundamental practices in psychoanalysis. We consider the meanings of 'rules' and 'guidelines'. Joyce shares with us her current thinking on answering patients' questions – for some, it's helpful, for others, not. We discuss the use of the word 'fantasy' with patients as contrasted with 'guesses' or 'imaginings'. Joyce considers the many ways that patients terminate their treatments and how frequently it does not accord with traditional models of ending. We consider reluctance to leave the treatment relationship from both sides of the couch – analysts, too, have needs satisfied in this work and can play a part in the nature of the ending. Joyce relates how some former patients remain in contact with their analysts, and that isn't necessarily problematic. For others, "being able to 'go it alone' represents an extraordinary achievement." She concludes that "termination remains an ideal worth holding onto. But loosely." Our Guests: Joyce Slochower, Ph.D., ABPP, is Professor Emerita of Psychology at Hunter College & the Graduate Center, CUNY. Joyce is faculty and supervisor at the NYU Postdoctoral Program, the Steven Mitchell Center, the National Training Program of NIP (all in New York), the Philadelphia Center for Relational Studies in Philadelphia, and the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California in San Francisco. She has written Holding and Psychoanalysis: A Relational Perspective (1996) and Psychoanalytic Collisions (2006). She is co-Editor, with Lew Aron and Sue Grand, De-idealizing relational theory: a Critique from within and Decentering Relational Theory: A Comparative Critique (2018), both of which received the Gradiva award in 2019. The track marks a significant artistic shift away from her Tropicoqueta sound toward a minimalist, melancholic production style featuring ethereal guitar textures from collaborator Greg Gonzalez. With its restrained vocal delivery and sparse arrangement, the song avoids typical commercial hooks in favor of intimate, emotionally raw storytelling. The core theme centers on grief, absence, and the emotional aftermath of losing a loved one. Lyrics depict daily life disruptions such as tasteless breakfast, insomnia, academic struggles, and social withdrawal, alongside lines reflecting identity change and existential despair, including the explicit statement “Esto no es estar triste / Son ganas de morirse.” Symbolism of wilted roses and reckless driving underscores themes of decaying memory and mental unrest. Although public speculation has linked the song to a romantic breakup with Feid, Karol G has clarified it addresses the loss of a loved one, though romantic imagery continues to fuel discussion.Analytic Dreamz analyzes the surprise Coachella performance, which shifted the high-energy crowd to complete silence and sparked immediate global virality through organic user-generated content and personal dedications. This 17-track project continues the folk-pop and Americana sound established on the 2022 breakthrough album Stick Season while introducing new elements including increased piano presence and rock-pop detours, most notably on “American Cars.”The album explores deep themes of family trauma, sobriety, mental health challenges including anxiety, depression, and body dysmorphia, identity, hometown disconnect, and the tension between fame and personal authenticity. Unlike Stick Season, The Great Divide expands beyond Kahan's personal perspective to incorporate multiple viewpoints, anchored by the recurring motif of small-town life versus global success. Key tracks include the lead single “The Great Divide,” which addresses fear, mortality, and existential reflection, alongside “Doors,” “Paid Time Off,” “Dan,” “23,” “Deny Deny Deny,” “Porch Light,” “Dashboard,” and “Haircut.”Production credits feature Gabe Simon and Aaron Dessner, with recording sessions held in Nashville and Upstate New York. The project is positioned as a direct successor to Stick Season rather than a radical reinvention, praised for its strong songwriting and emotional depth while drawing comparisons to Taylor Swift's pop structures, Don Henley's tone, Bon Iver, Zach Bryan, and Mumford & Sons.Analytic Dreamz examines the accompanying documentary Noah Kahan: Out of Body, which provides additional context on Kahan's mental health struggles, writer's block, and personal philosophy of confronting rather than curing his challenges. The segment also covers the 2026 The Great Divide Tour, a North American arena and stadium run launching June 11 in Orlando and concluding August 31 in Seattle, with multiple sold-out dates including a four-night Boston residency at Fenway Park.Ticket demand has driven high pricing, with resale values reaching up to $13,198 in Boston, while base tickets start around $220. Analytic Dreamz analyzes how this project represents Noah Kahan's transition into a stadium-level headliner while maintaining his “regular-guy” relatability and authentic storytelling. This segment provides comprehensive insight into the album's thematic ambition, commercial momentum, and cultural positioning as a key 2026 release in folk-pop and Americana.
