Farm management and cropping practices can be complimentary to a livestock operation. Making use of all the months of the year can be quite the challenge, but Chris McLaren, of Larenwood Farms near Drumbo, Ont., has managed to do just that by integrating a cereal rye into his rotation. Captain Beefheart special with John Drumbo French in conversation with David Eastaugh
Captain Beefheart special with John French in conversation with David Eastaugh. French was invited to join Beefheart and the Magic Band in late 1966, as a replacement for Paul Blakely. Having played on Safe as Milk (1967), his distinctive drumming style moulded the driving heavy psychedelic blues of Strictly Personal (1968) and Mirror Man (1968, but not released till 1971). During the Trout Mask Replica sessions, French transcribed the musical ideas Beefheart played for him on piano for the rest of the band. However, shortly after the completion of Trout Mask Replica, French was booted out of the group rather violently by Beefheart and was replaced by the inexperienced Jeff Bruschell. French was also contentiously omitted from the credits of Trout Mask Replica and was largely absent from the band photos taken for the artwork. Nevertheless, he was soon invited back and played on the critically acclaimed albums Lick My Decals Off, Baby and The Spotlight Kid, sharing percussion duties with Art Tripp aka Ed Marimba. Then in late 1972, just before an American tour, he left again. Beefheart's contractual problems in 1975 forced him to join Frank Zappa's Bongo Fury tour,[citation needed] but as soon as he was able he reformed The Magic Band and French was recruited as both drummer and music director. 1976 saw the recording of the original version of Bat Chain Puller, which due to legal ownership problems remained unreleased until 2012. French also played guitar as well as drums on some of these songs. He walked out on Beefheart when his friend John Thomas (keyboards) was sacked from the band. French visited Beefheart in 1980 looking for work and was hired to take part in the recording of Doc at the Radar Station, playing guitar (and drumming on two tracks). He left before the band toured though, when Beefheart handed him a list of 40 songs to learn over a 3-month period. French sealed the walkout the next day by returning the guitar Beefheart had loaned him.
The Hole in the Air team talks with curator/artist/musician Anthony Ausgang about the late artist Victor Hayden AKA The Mascara Snake (of "Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band" fame). They discuss Hayden and a recent exhibition, curated by Ausgang, of Hayden's works, made available by Pamela Des Barres; Captain Beefheart, the Magic Band, and Trout Mask Replica; the curating of individual and group art shows; the City of Lancaster and the Antelope Valley; the City of Vernon and a beef-pork mural that once was there, and various other matters of art, music and culture. Right when the podcast episode is wrapping up, it starts up again for a final portion, with the participants sucking on atomic fireballs. In retrospect, Paul of the podcast team feels quite apologetic for his meandering pontificating, which he maintains was a product of his nervous uncertainty about whether the audience might be largely Beefheart aficionados, or those who might know nothing about that music and scene. Also, making the episode available to the public, months after it was recorded, took longer than expected, oops. The Hole in the Air Interlocutor and the sounds of Fingers DelRey are heard.

I became so desperate for inebriated criticisim of socialism, and other fine discussions, that I checked utube. Then I became depressed when I saw that you have been sharing your collective wisdom there, but not on iTunes. What’s going on? Did some libtard at Apple piss in your whiskey? Are commie bastards censoring your freedom to speak? I hope you can resolve this soon, before I have to resort to watching utube videos while driving. On April 28, 2017, I took a break from lecturing at UC Berkeley, California, and sat down for an extended discussion with drummer, arranger, composer and singer, John 'Drumbo' French. I wanted to understand the strange, unique and complex working process that led to the creation of the legendary 1969 album, Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band. A great deal of misinformation, exaggerations and superficial comments have obscured the truth for far too long. No one on the planet knows more about this music and was more intimately involved in its creation than John French, and what he had to say is of great historic interest. Thank you to John for agreeing to this discussion.View the video of our discussion**SUPPORT THIS PODCASTPatreonDonorboxLINKSYouTube channelOfficial WebsiteTwitterInstagramEdition Impronta, publisher of Samuel Andreyev's scoresEPISODE CREDITSSpoken introduction: Maya RasmussenPodcast artwork photograph © 2019 Philippe StirnweissIntroduction music: Samuel Andreyev's Piano Piece N° 2, performed by Trami NguyenSupport the show (http://www.patreon.com/samuelandreyev)

Joe hosts a live round table discussion featuring Jim Keltner, Bobbye Hall, James Gadson, Jim Sclavunos, and John "Drumbo" French. This episode was recorded live in Los Angeles at the release party for The Drum Thing, a fantastic book of photography focused on many of the world's most interesting drummers.
Joe talks to John "Drumbo" French about blazing a singular path with Captain Beefheart, slipping his under tyrannical rule, arranging the seminal album, "Trout Mask Replica" and learning many years later that his work truly meant something to people all over the world.
Brothers & Sisters...with a tip of the hat to The "Beefman"As most of you who listen to this humble Podcast know....I'm a big Captain Beefheart fan.....not the kind who thinks "Trout Mask Replica" is "a work of genius" but the somewhat impartial fan who is still listening to that record after 40 yrs trying to figure out what it's all about. Don't get me wrong: it is the work of more than one genius IMHO....the players get props in my book...especially Drumbo who plays like a man working out the demons.....If your diggin' this Podcast drop me an email: PARTY OF SPECIAL THINGS TO DO PODCASTWhen the stiff wind blows / The flag don't wiggle / In the party of special things to do / I met the ace of love / She took me to her plantation / For the love without separation / In the party of special things to do / It could happen to me / It could happen to you / I met the ace of love / She said i want you to go / To the party of special things to do / And when you're through / I'll be right here waiting for you / Here take these sparks / So my distant cousins can get along with you / Watch out for the mirror man / And elixir sue / When i got to the party of special things to do / It wasn't hard to find elixir sue / I met all the cards / The wild cards / The one-eye jill / The red queen / She turned her head / You know what i mean / She turned it back and said / "i got a brand new game i want to lay on you" / I met them all / At the party of special things to do / When i was done / I was far from through / I returned to the ace of love / Now wouldn't you? / I met them all / The camel wore a nightie / The camel wore a nightie / At the party of special things to do / ...elixir sue / It wasn't hard to find liquor at the do / I met all the cards / The wild cards / You know what i mean / Then she turned it back and said / "i got a brand new game i think i want to lay on you" / I met elixir sue / At the party of special things to do / It's so special .......
