Grace Potter makes her Record Store Day Podcast debut to talk about her new album that is actually seventeen years old. In 2008, the Vermont-born, singer songwriter, and front person for Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, collaborated with the legendary T-Bone Burnett on a solo departure called Medicine, featuring Burnett and a crew of side players including Jim Keltner, Marc Ribot, Dennis Crouch, and Keefus Ciancia. It was a solid set and a bold personal statement but, at the time, Hollywood Records shelved the album indefinitely to concentrate on furthering her work with the Nocturnals. But now, it's finally seeing the light of day, and Grace graced us with the inside story on Medicine's long, long journey to the racks of your local independent record store. The Record Store Day Podcast is a weekly music chat show written, produced, engineered and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music. Executive Producers (for Record Store Day) Michael Kurtz and Carrie Colliton. I was a big fan of Guadalcanal Diary, so when Murray Attaway appeared on Frets back in 2022, I could hardly believe I was talking with their lead singer and main songwriter. The band released four major label albums throughout the 1980s and Murray went on to record In Thrall, a solo album that features Jackson Browne, Nicky Hopkins, Jim Keltner, Aimee Mann, Steve Nieve, Sid Page and Benmont Tench among others. Murray has also composed music for independent film scores and his songs have been featured in many films and television shows. This week sees the release of Murray's new solo album, Tense Music Plays, and returning to Frets to tell us all about the new record is, the one and only, Murray Attaway.Photo by Layla AttawayYou can order Tense Music Plays through Bandcamp here or through murrayattaway.comSave on Certified Pre-Owned ElectronicsPlug has great prices on refurbished electronics. We roar back into life for our 2025 season with the podcast crossover that nobody but us was asking for, as co-host of venerated blockbuster Beatles podcast Steven Cockcroft joins Jeremy Dylan to talk about George Harrison's solo classic 'Living in the Material World'. In amongst numerous fab-adjacent tangents, Steven and Jeremy talk about the long shadow All Things Must Pass casts over this record, Ringo Starr and Jim Keltner's innovative double drumming techniques, the lead piano of the legendary Nicky Hopkins, how this album might have served as a template for the rest of Harrison's recording career, Harrison's bitterness around the Beatles and the push and pull between his spirituality and material appetites, lawyer-based hoedowns, Harrison's extremely intermittent history as a live act and more. Plus, Steven shares his memories of attending the amazing Concert for George tribute night featuring every single living (at the time) rock legend plus a surprise Monty Python reunion.

Big Fat Five: A Podcast Financially Supported by Big Fat Snare Drum
This week's guest is Fred Eltringham! If you listened to our recent episode with Sterling Laws, you heard Fred get a lot of love as one of Sterling's five picks—so it was an honor to finally have him on the show himself. And I gotta say…his voice is so soothing and calm. Puts mine to shame. Fred has been playing with Sheryl Crow since 2012, but his résumé also includes The Wallflowers, The Chicks, kd lang, Willie Nelson, Gigolo Aunts, Juliana Hatfield, Ben Kweller, and plenty more. He's a steady, calm ship at sea behind the kit, and it seems like songwriters line up around the block to work with him. In addition to his international touring with Sheryl, you can catch him on Instagram whenever he's doing something cool in Nashville—especially with Jules Belmont, as part of their tasty little instrumental group. So, please enjoy my chat with Fred Eltringham about the five records that shaped him into the musician he is today. Cheers! --- Get Your Copy of the Drummers on Drumming Book Today!

Welcome back to Drummers on Drumming, the podcast powered by Big Fat Snare Drum. This is another segment of Big Fat Five, where I invite my favorite drummers to break down the five records that shaped their approach to the instrument. Today, I'm joined by Ian Matthews, drummer for the "future rock" Kasabian—a group that, like many of the greats, enjoys massive success outside the U.S. while somehow remaining criminally underrated stateside. With eight studio albums and a reputation for explosive, anthemic live shows, Kasabian has been shaping the sound of modern rock for decades. And at the heart of it all? Ian Matthews—the powerhouse engine behind their dynamic and electrifying sound. We cover a lot in this conversation—stuff that will help any drummer level up their playing and presence on the kit. I also want to mention something special: If you've listened to The Drum Panel recently, you know I've talked about a certain project from November 2024 that I was really stoked about. Well, Ian was one of my main inspirations for those sessions. This one meant a lot. Enjoy the five records that shaped Ian Matthews into the drummer he is today. --- Get Your Copy of the Drummers on Drumming Book Today!
What happens when a legendary artist turns his final days into one of the most celebrated albums of all time? In this gripping oral history of Warren Zevon's Grammy-winning swan song, The Wind, we unravel the stories behind the music, the heartbreak, and the triumph. Featuring exclusive insights from Jorge Calderón, Warren's lifelong collaborator and The Wind co-producer, and Noah Scot-Snyder, the album's co-producer, engineer and mixer, this episode takes you behind the curtain of Zevon's bittersweet journey. Hear how Zevon defied the odds, transforming a terminal diagnosis into a creative explosion and how close the album came from not being completed. From emotional songwriting and recording sessions to unforgettable moments like Bruce Springsteen breaking an amplifier during his blistering guitar session. Discover how Ry Cooder, Don Henley, Joe Walsh, Jim Keltner, Emmylou Harris, and more rallied to honor Warren's legacy, creating an album that transcended time, grief, and circumstance. Jorge and Noah recount Warren's humor and vulnerability, like the night he decided to record "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" in Billy Bob Thornton's basement or Zevon's insistence on crafting "Keep Me In Your Heart," even when the pain felt insurmountable. You'll hear about the magic of “Rest of the Night,” a rowdy anthem with Tom Petty and Mike Campbell born from Zevon's last moments of levity, and the emotional toll the process took on those closest to him. This episode isn't just about music—it's about life, legacy, and the stories that make great art unforgettable. If you love music history, legendary collaborations, or just a raw, unfiltered look at the human spirit, this is a must-listen. Thank you very much to Bob Emrich and Tom Hatfield for their assistance recording this episode.

In this episode, we discuss a true Beatles friend, drummer Jim Keltner. The session drummer was a mainstay on Beatles solo albums and performances/tours from John, George, and Ringo in the 1970s, as well as being a member of the Traveling Wilburys. Keltner also played with about everyone in the business, ranging from Gary Lewis and the Playboys to Lana Del Rey, and being one of the most-recorded drummers in music history. Here is a playlist that give you an overview of his work. We also give you the latest Beatles news, including news on Ringo's new album and a film by Martin Scorsese. "A Boot And A Shoe" The Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Sam Phillips has had quite a career. The Glendale-born musician has almost fifteen albums under her musical belt, including The Indescribable Wow, Cruel Inventions, Martinis and Bikinis, Cold Dark Nights and the newly reissued version of A Boot And A Shoe. We'll get to that in a minute, but before we do, let me give you a partial list of folks she's collaborated with over the years: R.EM., Elvis Costello, T-Bone Burnett, Van Dyke Parks, Marc Ribot, Jim Keltner, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. Other career highlights; she's composed scores for Gilmore Girls, Bunheads and the Marvelous Ms. Maisel, she appeared in Die Hard With A Vengeance and Wim Wenders' The End Of Violence (the throat cutting I referenced comes in the former) and her handmade collages on repurposed vintage album sleeves that were found at flea markets.were exhibited at the Gertrude Contemporary in Australia. But back to a Boot and A Shoe. The 2004 album has been given a proper reissue by Omnivore to commemorate its 20th anniversary. Available on CD and on vinyl for the very first time along with new liner notes penned by Phillips, the thirteen track album has never sounded better. Thanks to Phillips' lyrical dexterity and elegant phrasing and featuring numbers like "Reflecting Light," "If I Could Write," "Hole In My Pocket" and "One Day Late," A Boot And A Shoe" remains a timeless classic. www.samphillips.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Stereo Embers The Podcast Twitter (what's left of it): @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com (mailto:editor@stereoembersmagazine.com)
In this episode we tell the story of Little Village, a band that existed for a short time in 1991-92. It consisted of Ry Cooder, John Hiatt, Jim Keltner and Nick Lowe, who had played together on Hiatt's album Bring The Family a few years earlier. Together they made another great album, but one that sounded different for a number of reasons. It wasn't a real hit, but it wasn't a disappointment either, just another ingenious effort from four very special musicians. We also take a quick look at Cooder and David Lindley's 1990 tour. This podcast frequently uses small snippets of musical recordings in podcast episodes for educational, review, and commentary purposes. Born and raised in Arkansas, Evan grew up playing drums at his dads church in Fort Smith. He was the kid that would sit behind the drummer during church and soak in every detail and nuance. Once church let out, he'd jump up on the kit and play, until the next church service started a few hours later. Evan got his first drum set at the age of 8 and began serenading his whole family and neighborhood with punk rock beats and the sounds of the radio. After touring the country with his band The Exception, Evan decided it was time to move to Nashville, TN and attend Middle Tennessee State under the direction of Lalo Davila and Tom Giampietro. It was in college where Evan honed his craft and wanted to become a studio musician. Years later and having played on multiple #1 songs on the radio, Evan is now an in demand studio drummer. This episode of Across The Margin : The Podcast features an interview with Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Leslie Mendelson. Modeling her music after such '70s icons as Carole King and Joni Mitchell, Leslie Mendelson began making waves in 2009 with her debut Grammy-nominated album Swan Feathers, which was followed by two outstanding offerings, 2017's Love & Murder and 2020's If You Can't Say Anything Nice. Just last month Leslie released her fourth studio album — the focus of this interview — an outstanding collection of tracks entitled After The Party (Royal Potato Family). For this latest effort, she collaborates with not one, but three producers: the legendary Peter Asher (James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt), the young, in-demand Tyler Chester (Madison Cunningham, Sara Bareilles, Sara Watkins) and her longtime songwriting partner, three-time Grammy Award-winner, Steve McEwan. Recorded at Jackson Browne's studio Groove Masters in Santa Monica, CA, she was joined by an ace band featuring guitarists Waddy Wachtel and John Jorgenson, bassists Leland Sklar and Derrick Anderson, and drummers Jim Keltner and Abe Rounds. Throughout After The Party's ten tracks, Leslie crafts a distinctive folk-rock, pop-Americana flavor, evoking the sounds of Laurel Canyon, but with the downtown grit and sharp wit of Brooklyn, the city she has called home for over two decades now. There's a refreshing realness and effortless musicality that feels both nostalgic and new throughout After The Party. In this episode host Michael Shields and Leslie Mendelson talk about how Leslie's recent album's title was inspired by Andy Warhol's still life of the same name while recounting the compelling story how she came to working with famed producer Peter Asher on the album and recording in Jackson Browne's Groove Masters Studio. They discuss the remarkable band that backed Leslie for After The Party, the diverse and introspective themes found throughout the album, what life on the road is like for Leslie currently, and so much more. Episode 173: In Conversation With Billy Vera (Part 1) Sarah usually writes these show notes, and on the rare occasion that I fill in for her, I do something silly - I either make them really short or I have ChatGPT help me by doing most of the work. This time, I asked to do them because I am still in shock that this episode exists and because it was a true thrill to speak with an artist who has been a favorite of mine since I was 16! After discovering Billy Vera, along with many others of my generation, thanks to the hit comedy "Family Ties", I would go on to collect his entire catalog, with the exception of "Queen of Diamonds / Jack of Hearts" by Evie Sands & Billy Vera which I haven't been able to find yet. I will one day though! I would watch him on TV shows like "Wiseguy" and "Into the Night", where he served as a late-night bandleader and often performed his wonderful songs. I would occasionally be surprised and excited to spot him in movies throughout the 80s and 90s. He was doing so many great things, and doing all of those things at a level which should have made him a Super Star if there was any justice in the world. With all of his various talents, songwriting and singing are where Billy truly shines, so getting to talk with him about his career and his music was an amazing experience. In this first episode (of two), we touched on so many topics, even going back to the mid-1960s and some of his earliest songs. I really hope you will enjoy this discussion on some of my favorite music. Topics that we cover in this first episode: · Billy's upcoming trip to Italy to perform and to receive an award at the Porretta Soul Music Festival · Working with Jerry Wexler · Writing songs professionally in NYC in the 1960s · A song he wishes he wrote · Writing "Room with a View" with Lowell Fulson · Working with Bonnie Raitt · Recording "Storybook Children" with Judy Clay · Playing the Apollo Theater · Thoughts on songwriting · Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era and "Don't Look Back" · His 1988 Capital album "Retro Nuevo" · The three styles of Production · Working with Lou Rawls and George Benson · Working with Arif Mardin · How did Jim Keltner become a Beater in 1988? · Working on the Blake Edwards movie "Blind Date" · Hanging out with Bruce Willis, Demi Moore, and Kim Basinger · Meeting L. Russell Brown · Being "inspired" by Loni Anderson · Writing his biggest hit "At this Moment" and the story behind the song · Writing Brian's favorite BV song "Here Comes The Dawn Again" · Releasing his biggest album on Rhino Records · Doing promo work in the 1980s · Advice from his mother You can learn more about Billy's story, his books, and his music at https://billyvera.com/ Follow him on Facebook for the latest info on his gigs and his weekly radio show: https://www.facebook.com/TheRealBillyVera Treat yourself to music and books by Billy here: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=billy+vera&crid=31CGZ21181YET&sprefix=billy+vera%2Caps%2C102&ref=nb_sb_noss_1 Read more at http://www.permanentrecordpodcast.com/ Visit us at https://www.facebook.com/permrecordpodcast Follow us at https://twitter.com/permrecordpod Check out some pictures at https://www.instagram.com/permanentrecordpodcast/ So this BlueSky thing looks shiny and new: https://bsky.app/profile/permrecordpod.bsky.social Oh! It's the end of the line for 1988, and the beginning of the epic super-group: The Traveling Wilburys! With the release of their debut LP ``Volume 1", George Harrison and friends Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and Jim Keltner floored both modern and classic rockers alike with a signature blend of harmony, guitar, and rambler-style songcraft. Listeners of the day, curious to know if the band could live up to the heights of their strong debut single Handle With Care, were not disappointed. From the joyous noise of Heading for the Light to the often-hilarious lyrics of Dirty World, six old friends proved to the masses that age has nothing to do with good music, and that the combined talents of otherwise disparate musicians could amount to something spectacular. Of course the December 6th passing of bandmate Roy Orbison would put a damper on the otherwise happy affair - still, through the heartache and pain, the music of the Traveling Wilburys was a beacon of comfort to those who might need to hear that they were not alone anymore... A supergroup is a band made up of musicians who have already achieved fame either as soloists or members of another band. One of the most iconic of supergroups would be formed in 1988 and go by the name of The Traveling Wilburys. In 1987 George Harrison released his album "Cloud Nine" with Jeff Lynne performing a number of instruments and co-producing. They started talking about forming a group during those sessions, with Harrison talking about bringing in Bob Dylan and Lynne talking about bringing in Roy Orbison. Tom Petty joined in when Harrison went to his house to pick up a guitar he had left there previously. The criteria that Harrison had, according to fellow Wilbury Tom Petty, was a group of folks "who you could hang out with." The group bonded over their appreciation for 50's-style rock n' roll, and their love of the Monty Python comedy troupe. The group took on personas of half-brothers, with George Harrison as Nelson Wilbury, Jeff Lynne as Otis Wilbury, Roy Orbison as Lefty Wilbury, Bob Dylan as Lucky Wilbury, and Tom Petty as Charlie T. Wilbury Jr. Frequent collaborator Jim Keltner provides percussion work and takes on the name of Buster Sidebury. The name Wilbury comes from a running joke between Lynne and Harrison. When some error in the equipment would occur during the production of Harrison's "Cloud Nine" album, Harrison said, “We'll bury 'em in the mix.”The Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 had to be done in 10 days, because Dylan and Orbison had upcoming tours and projects. Generally the writing and recording of a song was completed in a single day. The result was a commercial and critical success, and the album won the Grammy for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group in 1990.Bruce presents this supergroup in today's podcast. MargaritaThis track starts with an 80's electronic feel, but quickly moves into a Bo Diddley beat that is more roots rock. A deeper cut, this song was released as the B-side to the single "Handle with Care."Handle With CareThe big single went to number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100, and number 2 on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart. This song was the impetus to bringing the group together, as it was originally supposed to be an extra track for a B-side of a European single, but the result was deemed too good for a limited release. Not Alone Any MoreThis deeper track finishes off side 1. It was written mainly by Otis Wilbury for the vocal style of Lefty Wilbury, although all members are credited as songwriters. The lyrics reflect themes of loneliness, which were Lefty's signature style back in the 60's.End of the LineThis was the band's second single. It peaked at number 63 on the Billboard Hot 100, but number 2 on the Album Rock Tracks chart. Roy Orbison died of a heart attack at age 52 after recording the song but before the video was made. The video features a guitar sitting in a rocking chair in memorial to Orbison ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Baby Doll by Devo (from the motion picture “Tape Heads”)Despite sporting an all-star cast, this comedy movie bombed at the box office. STAFF PICKS:Big League by Tom Cochrane and Red RiderWayne starts off the staff picks with a bittersweet song. Cochrane tells a tale of a young hockey star destined for the pros until he lost his life in a car crash. It was inspired by a true story told to Cochrane by the boy's father. This song went to number 9 on the American Billboard Rock Tracks chart, and gets frequent airplay on classic rock radio stations in Canada. Didn't Know It Was Love by SurvivorRob's staff pick finds the singer looking back at a relationship he missed, and hoping it isn't too late. Survivor had their big splash a few years prior with “Eye of the Tiger,” and this is off their seventh album, “Too Hot to Sleep.” Unfortunately it barely made it onto the Billboard 200 album chart at 187, and the group broke up shortly thereafter.Kokomo by The Beach BoysLynch brings us the first number 1 US hit for the Beach Boys since the 60's. The song was featured in the Tom Cruise movie “Cocktail,” and the song reflects a relaxed tropical vibe. This single reinvigorated the Beach Boys, as fans began to look at their catalogue again. What's On Your Mind (Pure Energy) by Information SocietyBruce wraps up the staff picks with the signature song from a Minneapolis synth pop trio. This song started as a 10-minute instrumental jam, but received minimalist lyrics reflecting the trouble people have communicating for the single release. It also features sampled lyrics from Star Trek, particularly the repeated "pure energy" lyric from Leonard Nimoy's Mr. Spock. COMEDY TRACK:A Nightmare on My Street by DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh PrinceThis single reflects the Halloween vibe as Will Smith aka The Fresh Prince riffs on Freddy Kruger's horror in “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. In the spring of 1988, George Harrison recruited his friends Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, and Jim Keltner to collaborate on a song. The result was so stunningly good that they decided to do an entire album together, thereby creating the biggest supergroup of all time. And yes, we do discuss some of those other ones as well. Better Off Dead is a classic dark comedy from 1985 starring John Cusack. Its eminently quotable dialogue (ever wonder where the line, "I want my TWO DOLLARS" cam from?) and strange, memorable characters make for a fun watch, or RE-watch. Joe Wong is a LA based musician, film and tv composer, producer, and podcaster. His newest record, Mere Survival, is a lush orchestral psychedelic pop odyssey laden with timeless song structure and stacked with the heaviest of heavy hitting guest musicians (Mary Timony, Nate Mendel, Money Mark, Jim Keltner and Matt Cameron, to name of few). Joe (Wong) shares the motivation behind this realistic, yet despair rich record, and how this stage in his career naturally led to its completion. The Joe's discuss the absurdity of the all-star cast of contributors and why Joe Wong sees making a record as an innately social experience. The two exchange their gleaned wisdom they've absorbed from Buzz Osborne, Joe (Wong) tells us why he's getting his podcast The Trap Set up and running again and we hear his plans for upcoming performances of Mere Survival. As usual, we hear a few tunes and soak up the vibrations. Joe Wong Mere Survival Episode supported by Distrokid Episode supported by Izotope
A movie about the border region between Texas and Mexico was naturally made for Ry Cooder – and vice versa. The Border defies easy categorization. Directed by Tony Richardson and starring Jack Nicholson, it's half cop thriller, half refugee tragedy. For the soundtrack, Cooder assembled much of his usual band: Jim Dickinson on piano, John Hiatt on guitar and vocals, Jim Keltner on drums and Tim Drummond on bass. He also included contributions from Freddy Fender and Sam Samudio, better known as Sam the Sham. The much-recorded title theme, Across The Borderline, sensitively depicts the paradoxical emotional world and the absurd situation of the refugees. This podcast frequently uses small snippets of musical recordings in podcast episodes for educational, review, and commentary purposes. They're not playing the local enormodome, but each musician has a storied career and the ability to leap musical conventions in a single bound, even while rocking like hell … or playing compositions with sections that ricochet from Coltrane to Martian terrain. The group sprung from guitarist Mike Baggetta's dream of an ideal, omnivorous band—one that could navigate any kind of musical or sonic path, much as Baggetta has done himself, whether playing with other artists or solo. His first choice of bassist was Mike Watt, a legendary indie music figure who has been releasing daring rock and improv albums for decades, starting with the highly influential '80s and '90s outfits the Minutemen and fIREHOSE. And while mssv's debut album, 2019's Wall of Flowers, was recorded with the foundational rock drummer Jim Keltner, Keltner's disinterest in touring caused Baggetta to seek a replacement in Stephen Hodges, one of the few sticks players who can match Keltner's intention and a brilliant artist in his own right, with decades supporting Tom Waits, Mavis Staple, and other legends. On the road behind their latest recording, Human Reaction (one of my picks for best albums of 2023), mssv stopped at the Blue Room in Nashville's Third Man Records complex in late October, where their wily creativity ignited the place. But at soundcheck, Baggetta and Watt explained to the PG team exactly why they dig their rigs.Full Rig Details: https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundowns/mssv-2024Subscribe to PG's Channel: http://bit.ly/SubscribePGYouTubeWin Guitar Gear: https://bit.ly/GiveawaysPG Don't Miss a Rundown: http://bit.ly/RIgRundownENLMerch & Magazines: https://shop.premierguitar.comPG's Facebook: https://facebook.com/premierguitarPG's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/premierguitar/PG's Twitter: https://twitter.com/premierguitarPG's Threads: https://threads.net/@premierguitarPG's TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@premierguitar[Brought to you by D'Addario: https://ddar.io/wykyk-rr]0:00 - D'Addario: WYKYK0:15 - Mike Baggetta playing intro1:50 - Mike Baggetta's Custom Koll Tornado w/ Guyatone Curtis Novak Goldfoils8:36 - Strings - D'Addario XT 10-469:33 - Mike Baggetta's Pedals9:49 - Hold Tight Fuzz by Creepy Fingers10:44 - EHX “Ring Thing” side band modulator13:16 - Wilson Effects “Freaker Wah” V215:09 - Benson Amps “Vincent”18:45 - Red Panda “Tensor”21:41 - EHX “Deluxe Memory Man”23:20 - D'Addario XPND24:34 - Reverend Guitars “Watt Plower Mk. Big Fat Five: A Podcast Financially Supported by Big Fat Snare Drum
This week's guest is Griffin Goldsmith, drummer for the band Dawes. I've been lucky enough to see Griffin perform a few times in person the last month and he is quickly becoming one of my favorite drummers. Also…Dawes just released a 10TH ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION of their album “Stories Dont End” on limited edition storm cloud vinyl with Remixed & Remastered songs + 6 Bonus Tracks. You can check out that and all their other offerings at dawestheband.com In addition to Dawes, Griff has also worked with countless artists such as Jackson Browne, John Fogerty, Robbie Robertson, Jim Keltner, Elvis Costello, Sharon Von Etten, Angel Olson, Jenny Lewis, Bahamas and the list goes on and on. He's recently added film scoring to his list of accomplishments. His delicate and deliberate touch is timeless and honors the gold standard of what it means to be a studio musician. Conversations like this are why I get so excited every week to talk to the best drummers of the day. Griffin's choices are sourced from the apex of human artistry behind the kit and I know you will all be better drummers after hearing what he has to say. Please enjoy my conversation with Griffin Goldsmith…also please go down a rabbit hole of his playing, not only throughout the entire Dawes catalogue, but all the artists I just mentioned. I can't stress enough how underrated he is. Cheers! SUBMIT YOUR LISTENER PICKS HERE GRIFF'S BIG FAT FIVE
Steve Lukather Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Hold the Line! Steve Lukather may be a bonafide rock star, but he's also down-to-earth, self-effacing, self-aware, open-minded, hearted, reflective, enthusiastic, passionate, thoughtful, generous, and perhaps sweetest of all, a fanboy like us of his heroes. From the 6-year-old boy blown away by The Beatles on Ed Sullivan, George's guitar specifically, to the grown man who came to play and friend not only George, but Paul, and closer than close with Ringo, his “boss” for the past decade. Fab stories of all three, not to mention much about Steve and then Jeff Porcaro, David Paich, with whom he began being a serious musician whilst still in high school. Stories about Steely Dan and their various incarnations, one which almost included him, Boz Scaggs, his first major gig, the formation of Toto, sessions, sessions, and more sessions, Dean Parks, Ray Parker, Jim Keltner, Larry Carlton, touring, alcohol, drugs, wild times, Michael Jackson, Thriller, Eddie Van Halen, Elton John, solo albums, his latest - Bridges https://bit.ly/40I9PH2 which is in heavy rotation in my kitchen, and his memoir, The Gospel According to Luke https://bit.ly/3QFLPPZ an unputdownable, crazy fun read. Just like Luke himself. The time flew. I feel like I've known him forever. And, like all great things, left me wanting more. Jim's a very rare breed because he's a phenomenal guitarist, and he's equally adept at drums. He's played on 5 Paul Simon LPs and did multiple world tours with Paul Simon... playing guitar, bass and drums on Paul Simon's 2011 album "So Beautiful Or So What,” which was produced by Phil Ramone. Also worked for Phil Ramone as a studio musician (outside of Paul Simon). Other sideman gigs include most recently touring and performing on Lucinda Williams' latest LP, playing on Andrea Zonn's recording "Rise" along with Steve Gadd, Willie Weeks, Vince Gill... as well as records with artists Rodney Crowell, Swamp Dogg, Janis Ian and others. Jim has a new album out called I Want to Be Loved, it's an album of cool Jimmy Reed blues covers - this a duo record with Jim Keltner playing drums and Jim playing everything else. I'm excited to let you know Jim Oblon is also the guy who wrote, played and produced the opening and closing bumper music for the audio version of the Everyone Loves Guitar Talk Show & Podcast. Interview with guitarist Mike Baggetta on his new album with mssv mssv is releasing their second studio album Human Reaction in their typical style: with a 58-show tour in the U.S. and parts of Canada (dates below). The band, composed of guitarist Mike Baggetta, Stephen Hodges (Tom Waits, David Lynch) on drums and avant-punk icon mike watton bass, creates music that is a heretofore unimagined hybrid of a punk power-trio and a dreamy experimental rock band, though they prefer the term “post-genre.” Human Reaction is being released by BIG EGO Records as a digital download, 12” LP vinyl, and via streaming platformson September 1. Recorded mostly on May Day immediately following that last tour, Human Reaction traverses a deeply broad sonic landscape, as expected from this nearly unclassifiable group, though with even deeper twists and turns. With inventively churning drum textures from Hodges (an instantly identifiable sound honed in his days with Tom Waits and David Lynch) and the full-steam-ahead all-in attitude from watt, (as he's displayed throughout his storied career with MINUTEMEN, fIREHOSE, and Iggy & The Stooges), there is still the impression of “pressure, combustion, power, and hissing clouds of sonic poetry,” as Premier Guitar said. Also evident is the more fearless exploring that comes from a band that has spent a lot of time together crafting their vision, as well as making room for guests like J Mascis, Petra Haden and Nels Cline on some of their previous releases. Baggetta has had the pleasure of working all over the world with a wide range of visionary musicians across many generations, including David Torn, Jim Keltner, Nels Cline, Psychic Temple, Jeff Coffin, Henry Kaiser, Petra Haden, Rev. Fred Lane, Donny McCaslin, Darcy James Argue's Secret Society, Joseph C. Philips' Numinous, Imani Uzuri, Viktor Krauss, David Wax Museum, Julian Lage, Jon Irabagon, Jerome Harris, Tom Harrell, Eivind Opsvik, Jeremy Udden, and Ruth Brown among many others. mikebaggetta.com https://mainsteamstopvalve.com Tickets to OCT 7th mssv at Beachland Tavern Cleveland OH https://www.beachlandballroom.com/e/13205278/mssv-c-level/
Ray Padgett lives in Vermont, first discovered Dylan when he was 16 in the 21st Century and was fascinated and besotted, later launching the newsletter ‘Flagging Down the Double E's' and now publishing the enthralling ‘Pledging My Time', a collection of his interviews with over 40 people who've worked, performed and recorded with the inscrutable old rogue. Both the book and this fast-moving, whip-smart and very funny conversation are revelatory and highly recommended, the podcast shedding light on … … the daily life of Bob Dylan – eg the piles of gifts he routinely receives and the security men who scour his vacated hotel rooms to remove anything that could be nicked and put on eBay. … the only friend who seemed to co-exist with him on “an equal footing”. ... an eye-witness account of his first performance (aged 13) at a Jewish summer camp in Minnesota. … the childhood friend who owned a fish business in Duluth and ended up running the Rolling Thunder Revue - as Dylan enigmatically put it, “if you can sell fish, you can sell tickets”. ... the time he went to a business conference and nobody recognised him. … how he tells musicians to “never play the same thing twice”. … the chance meeting with Scarlet Rivera – two hours later she was onstage as “my violinist” with Dylan and Muddy Waters. … multiple examples of his love of spontaneity and the extraordinary way he hires musicians. … a rare moment when his career seemed to stall. … and honourable mentions of Richard Thompson, Paul Stookey, Jim Keltner, Stan Lynch and Jeff Bridges.
