In this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with renowned bassist, composer, and producer Viktor Krauss for a thoughtful and wide-ranging conversation about his musical path, creative process, and the many collaborations that have shaped his career.Viktor Krauss is one of contemporary music's most versatile and respected bassists. He's played with an astonishing array of artists, including Lyle Lovett, Bill Frisell, Robert Plant, and Alison Krauss. Equally at home in jazz, folk, rock, and beyond, Viktor brings a deep sense of melody, texture, and feel to everything he touches. In addition to his work as a sideman, he's also released his solo projects, blending cinematic soundscapes with expressive songwriting. This episode is a must-listen for fans of genre-defying musicianship, creative collaboration, and the subtle art of supporting a song from the low end.Music from the Episode:For A Good Time (Viktor Krauss)Pipe Down (Bill Frisell)Big Shoe (Bill Frisell)Penguins (Lyle Lovett)Grit Lap (Viktor Krauss)Big Log (Viktor Krauss)Pinky Ring (Viktor Krauss)Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Viktor Krauss)Trouble With My Lover (Robert Plant & Alison Krauss)Learn more about Viktor and his work at viktorkrauss.com.Thank you for listening! Born and raised in Arkansas, Evan grew up playing drums at his dads church in Fort Smith. He was the kid that would sit behind the drummer during church and soak in every detail and nuance. Once church let out, he'd jump up on the kit and play, until the next church service started a few hours later. Evan got his first drum set at the age of 8 and began serenading his whole family and neighborhood with punk rock beats and the sounds of the radio. After touring the country with his band The Exception, Evan decided it was time to move to Nashville, TN and attend Middle Tennessee State under the direction of Lalo Davila and Tom Giampietro. It was in college where Evan honed his craft and wanted to become a studio musician. Years later and having played on multiple #1 songs on the radio, Evan is now an in demand studio drummer. Content warning: this episode discusses pregnancy and child loss. Please take care while listening. On this week's episode, we book a round trip ticket To Venus and Back. Tori's surprisingly prompt follow -up to 1998's From the Choirgirl Hotel. After an epic world tour, Tori had implied that she'd be taking a break from recording for a while and planned to release a live album with a few new bonus tracks. As Tori's want to do, those bonus tracks developed into a full -blown 11 -track album with a bonus live disc that was released on September 21st, 1999, my 17th birthday. Thank you very much. To Venus and Back is deeply beloved by fans and for good reason. It shows Tori and her band, Matt Chamberlain on drums, Jon Evans on bass, and Steve Caton on guitars at the height of their ensemble powers, and Tori at her most sonically experimental. As Tori herself once instructed, if it's too loud, turn it up. And that's precisely what she does on To Venus and Back. The songs feel like an organic extension of the Choirgirl sound, but to say they sounded all similar to one another would be listener malpractice. Venus occupies a sonic space that is truly unlike anything Tori has done up to that point or has done since. The mixing, the engineering, the drum looping, the vocal distortions, the manipulation of the Bosendorfer, the introduction of new and strange synthesizer samples. Every singular moment is its own dynamic piece of a dark, twisty, truly otherworldly puzzle that Tori has constructed with this record. It's cliche to say it was ahead of its time in 1999, but given how fresh and bold and immersive it sounds in the year of Our Lord 2024, no one would argue that Tori truly wrote, performed, and produced a collection of songs that pushed not only her own boundaries, but the boundaries of her listeners. Perhaps Tori summed it up best herself in the lyric from Spring Haze when she instructs us that quote, the only way out is to go so far in. So join us as we break the terror of the urban spell. Content warning: this episode briefly discusses DV and suicide. Please take care while listening.  “So what if you find you like to tango alone?" Tori Amos asks in the final moments of “Birthday Baby," the closing track of her 15th solo album Ocean to Ocean, released on October 21, 2021. An ode to the unexpected ways we collectively learned to both mourn and celebrate during the years-long isolation of the COVID-19 crisis, the song vacillates between a rousing eleven o'clock musical number and something a David Lynch character might sob inconsolably to while draped over a diner jukebox.  This juxtaposition is the essence of Tori, who has been masterfully weaving the familiar, strange, tender, and unsettling for over 30 years. What immediately distinguished Ocean to Ocean upon release from Amos' previous records, though, was its timeliness, an album written and recorded during the most hopeless heights of a global pandemic, released into a world that had barely begun to scratch the surface of its shared trauma.  Never one to shy away from documenting her own emotional turbulence, Tori allowed Ocean to Ocean to wear its melancholy on its sleeve. It's a record inspired and consumed by loss – loss of connection to others, loss of the self, loss of Tori's beloved mother Mary – and the process of trying to piece together both who we were before the storm and who we might become on the day after. The result is a tight, cohesive collection of songs that expertly articulates and somehow finds meaning in the deepest recesses of despair.  Ocean to Ocean is ultimately both a technical triumph -- Tori recorded virtually from her home studio in Cornwall, England with longtime collaborators Matt Chamberlain, Jon Evans, and John Philip Shenale (quite literally oceans apart) -- and a triumph of the spirit, Tori finding the artistic and emotional strength to recontextualize a year of losses into a record of rebirth.  So, stay with Joey, Kristen, and Matt as they unravel the gorgeous, generous fishing net that is Ocean to Ocean.  "Get Out of that Pain," a conversation between Joey and Tori for BOMB magazine: https://bombmagazine.org/articles/2020/05/06/tori-amos-resistance   Tiny Desk Concert: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SufUZu4h_m8  JV playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7zhxFp9ESB5WH9YuWY4Rpe?si=bedb114b0215415e KK playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2rFV8OAbjkRUsAx1sXBrFc?si=2b8a0878dcf6471c MM playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3Cf1JxCjkBhExAKP5ug4IC?si=ae970433a23e4377

Ryan Gruss  “The Fantasty Football of Music Making”  Ryan's journey in the music business began after graduating from The Berklee College of Music in 2000 with a degree in Musical Performance for Drums, and then moving to New York City to begin his "career" in the real world. It was during his second week at Atlantic when Ryan was approached by the HR department, asking if he was interested in becoming Ahmet Erteguns' (the legendary Founder and CEO of Atlantic) assistant. His mind was blown and he instantly accepted the position. In 2010, Ryan launched The Loop Loft and began recording other musicians and treating it like a record label, providing the artists with royalties from the sales of each loop pack. Word began to spread amongst the studio musician community, and a roster of legendary musicians like Omar Hakim, Joey Waronker, Matt Chamberlain began to form and quickly grow. For the next 8 years, Ryan continued to organically build The Loop Loft, adding more artists and content on a weekly basis. Partnerships with companies like Ableton, Native Instruments, BandLab and PreSonus were formed. Guitar Center also began to sell products from The Loop Loft. The company was now the top-selling source for loop and samples, generating millions of dollars of revenue each year. It was a career and a company that Ryan had never dreamed of or anticipated, but he had finally found his musical North Star. Ryan left Native Instruments in 2020 and formed Yurt Rock, literally inside of his Yurt studio in the hills of LA. But with the COVID pandemic grinding studio work to a halt, Ryan decided to take the time and move his family to Nashville, a place that many consider the music capital of the world. It was time for a fresh start. With dozens of the world's top musicians, Yurt Rock has quickly become the ultimate source for producers, engineers and songwriters seeking not only loops and samples, but also custom BATTERY/MASCHINE kits, Ableton Live Packs, Logic Sessions, multitracks and much more.     Things That Came Up: -3:50 Yurt Rock is the “Fantasy Football” of music making  -5:10 The Loop Loft was acquired by Native Instruments in 2018.  -12:30 Berklee set the tone for relationships throughout life.  -14:30 Expanding into software, partnering with plug-in companies and diving into new media.  -16:00 Affordable price points are key -18:00 Redmond's Big Modern Drums Vol. 1 and 2, as well as Locked! When this episode was recorded, the writers and actors strikes were both still going strong with no end in sight, so resident keyboardist for the Jimmy Kimmell Show, Jeff Babko, was able to find time in his normally very busy schedule to rap with me. In fact, the Kimmell show is just a piece of his crowded schedule, which includes being the touring pianist on stage with Steve Martin and Martin Short, in addition to composing for movie scores like the new Weird Al biopic, Toy Story 4, Encanto, but also recording with James Taylor, Jason Mraz, Shelby Lynne, Simon Philips, Sheryl Crow-- not counting the folks he's played with on Kimmell. He's a funny man, driven to make music with whomever and in whatever forum is available, but usually includes incredible musicians like Vinnie Colaiuta, Jeff Coffin, Matt Chamberlain, Mark Isham and many more. He's a podcast host for the Caffeinated Keyboardist, owns his own studio Tudor Tones and is generally just busy because what in the hell else is there in this life but to make music. He's got a new record called The Libretto Show with bassist David Piltch and is generally just ready to rip at all times.

I'm at The Groundlings Theatre for an Improv class. We're doing two-person scenes when our instructor says it's time for a drill. “This next exercise is a way to go deeper into your characters, fast.” For each pair, he instructs one person to start with a mundane statement about the other. The second person repeats the statement and adds something about what it means. Then it goes back to the first person to repeat the added-on part of the statement and add something else about what that means. Kymberlee: Carl, you look lonely standing here by the punchbowl all by yourself. Carl: I look lonely standing here by the punchbowl all by myself, and what that means is I'm not very good at social events. K: You're not very good at social events, and what that means is you prefer to have fun where you don't have to talk to people. C: I prefer to have fun where I don't have to talk to people, and what that means is I'm really into gaming. And so on it goes, until the instructor says, “Scene!” to end the exercise. That simple made-up scene gives us lots of information about our characters in only a couple of sentences. In our world, we as communicators have so much we want to share. But sometimes we get stuck in expressing the meat of it in a way that resonates with our audience. When you tap into your feelings, you get to the heart of your story faster! My guest today, Jane Lui, knows all about storytelling in a variety of ways. She does it through singing, composing, acting, producing, and so much more. In this episode, she talks about how she brings stories to life through her work with emotion leading the way and answers questions like: In what ways can you start to build your story if you're stuck? And how can you make your story more interesting for your audience? What you will learn in this episode: What really lies behind the magic of storytelling How you can structure your story to get people's attention How you can bring out the layers and multiple facets of your story Who is Jane? Jane Lui is a singer, songwriter, composer, and actress who goes by the stage name Surrija (sur-rye-ya). Originally from Hong Kong, she grew up playing piano. She immigrated to the Bay area and started listening to everything from 1930s oldies to 1990s Bjork. After obtaining her Bachelor of Music in Choral Conducting, Jane released three albums on Youtube that gained a strong following. Then she evolved into her self-titled concept album SURRIJA based on Picasso's lovers and demonstrated her own growth as both a woman and musician, from classical training to electro-pop artistry. The album, which received a 2021 Best Pop Album nomination at the San Diego Music Awards, features drummer Matt Chamberlain who has also worked with artists such as David Bowie and Fiona Apple. In addition to Chamberlain, Jane also collaborated with Kate Earl, Melissa Polinar, Son Lux, Tom Brousseau, Vienna Teng, and more. Currently, she's a cast member and co-music director of Lauren Yee's Cambodian Rock Band. She also composed for the theater productions All's Well That Ends Well and Secret in the Wings. Pearl Jam is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1990. The band's lineup consists of founding members Jeff Ament (bass guitar), Stone Gossard (rhythm guitar), Mike McCready (lead guitar), and Eddie Vedder (lead vocals, guitar), as well as Matt Cameron (drums), who joined in 1998. Keyboardist Boom Gaspar has also been a touring/session member with the band since 2002. Drummers Jack Irons, Dave Krusen, Matt Chamberlain, and Dave Abbruzzese are former members of the band. Pearl Jam outsold many of their contemporaries from the early 1990s, and are considered one of the most influential bands of the decade, being dubbed as "the most popular American rock & roll band of the '90s".Formed after the demise of Gossard and Ament's previous band, Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam broke into the mainstream with their debut album, Ten, in 1991. Ten stayed on the Billboard 200 chart for nearly five years, and has gone on to become one of the highest-selling rock records ever, going 13× platinum in the United States. Released in 1993, Pearl Jam's second album, Vs., sold over 950,000 copies in its first week of release, setting the record for most copies of an album sold in its first week of release at the time. Their third album, Vitalogy (1994), became the second-fastest-selling CD in history at the time, with more than 877,000 units sold in its first week. The guitarist discusses developing Painted Shield into a multiple vocalist group, as well as releasing the song “4th of July” while the world is on the brink of war. Stone also addresses the comparisons to his other offshoot project, Brad. On that subject, we're told that there is another Brad album in the works that will be using demos and lost vocal takes from the late Shawn Smith, which could come out later this year. From there, the attention is turned to Pearl Jam, who recently announced their rescheduled Gigaton tour dates (get tickets here!). Gossard tells us about relearning tracks from the band's latest LP for a third time, the possibility of a Lost Dogs Pt. 2, and wanting to make looser records at a quicker pace. To that point, he confirms that, yes, Pearl Jam have started working on their next album. "We've recorded some songs. We're on our way," he says. "We're making music." Artist Matt Chamberlain has always felt an urge to paint. Although he pursued his passion at the Maine College of Art (MECA) in Portland, he initially felt uncertain about how to make a living through his art. With this in mind, he picked up a “real” job as a prep cook at Portland's venerable farm-to-table restaurant, Fore Street.  The experience, a total immersion into foodservice, set Matt on another creative path as a chef, which eventually led to his owning  a Portland-based catering business. It wasn't until years later, when the stress of operating a food business reached a peak, that he returned to the art studio. To his surprise, there was much for him to say on the canvas, and a group of art collectors who were more than willing to hear it. Now, Matt makes his living creating art as one of the most recent additions to the Portland Art Gallery. Hear more about Matt's story on this episode of Radio Maine with Dr. Lisa Belisle.

Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament once stated that "essentially Ten was just an excuse to tour." The band clearly just wanted some material to play on the road, as their first tour kicked off just after they'd completed mixing sessions for their debut album; the record wasn't even released yet. The tour -- PJ's only with drummer Matt Chamberlain -- was a short one focusing on the East Coast and Midwest. It wrapped up in Chicago at the famed Cabaret Metro with a concert that is still legendary among Pearl Jam fans. After that Metro gig on July 21st, 1991, the band took a break as they prepared for the release of Ten. The album arrived a month later on August 27th, and by September, Pearl Jam returned for a world tour as one of the newly crowned kings of '90s rock. In this episode of Consequence Podcast Network and Sony's The Opus: Ten, we go back to The Metro to relive that final show of Pearl Jam's first tour so we can see a band on the brink of decades-long stardom. So when the pandemic hit in early 2020 forcing Dillon off the road, he instinctively directed his perpetually restless creative energy to writing and recording. Recently relocating to Kansas City after spending 15 years in New Orleans, Dillon and producer Chad Meise would track a trilogy of albums: 'Shoot The Moon,' 'Suitcase Man' and '1918.' In collaboration with his longtime record label Royal Potato Family, they would offer the records exclusively via Bandcamp just days after they were mixed and mastered. In 2021, those albums now receive the full vinyl treatment, as well as complete digital release across all streaming outlets. The first of the three records, 'Shoot The Moon,' is a ten track collection that Dillon describes as "Punkadelic-Funk-Psych" focused heavily on the current political climate in the United States. Assembling an assortment of stylistically uncompromising musicians to contribute, its line-up features Matt Chamberlain, Steven Bernstein, Nicholas Payton, Robbie Seahag Mangano, Jean-Paul Gaster and Nick Bockrath among others. Highlights include the apocalyptic road warrior anthem "Drivin' Down The Road," a swirling New Orleans jazz-raga "Further Adventures in Misadventures" and the snarling punk rock diatribe "Quool Aid Man" with its indictment of the American right: "old men and their guns."The second recording in the series, 'Suitcase Man' is a nine-song cycle through which Dillon examine his life and choices made over the past 55 years. It's a distinct entry in his extensive discography, notable for its strikingly honest lyricism and minimalist arrangements that incorporate sparse vibraphone and percussion with a handful of background vocals by Tiff Lamson of Givers and frequent collaborator JJ Jungle. Songs like "Empty Bones," "Turkish Rose" and "Matthew" represent Dillon at his most creatively daring, while confirming his ascent into the upper echelon of cult music outsiders in the lineage of artists like Tom Waits, Harry Partch and Captain Beefheart.Dillon completes the trilogy with '1918.' The focal point here are Dillon's instrumentals: the dank and dark Moog/tabla/vibraphone psych vibe of "Pinocchio," (listen/share) the electro analog trance of "Pelagic" and the jungle groove, space rock of the title track. Dillon once again calls on friends like drummer Earl Harvin and guitarist Shane Theriot to assist. Thematically speaking, the material addresses the Covid-19 pandemic and recent social unrest. "The parallels between 1918 and 2020 are immense. We just have fancier toys, but the tunnel vision and mammalian tendencies are the same if not greater," explains Dillon.A native of San Antonio, Texas, Mike Dillon got his start as a sideman, playing in such varied projects as MC 900 Foot Jesus, Brave Combo and Secret Chiefs 3. He's also served as an integral member of bands like Critters Buggin, Garage A Trois, Dead Kenny Gs and Nolatet, while leading Billy Goat, Hairy Apes BMX and Malachy Papers. Under his own name, he's amassed an extensive catalog of genre-defying recordings. All Music called his most recent release 'Rosewood,' recorded prior to the 2020 pandemic lockdown, "a hypnotic album that pulls you deep inside a percussive, sylvan-toned dreamscape." Touring relentlessly, Dillon has built one of the most loyal fanbases on the underground music scene, while being invited to share bills with bands including Clutch, Umphrey's McGee and Dean Ween GroupWe want to hear from you! Así nació “Burn My Bridges”. Escuchar audio

This episode shows a different type of musical journey and approach to music-making outside of the classical world! I speak with bass player Kaveh Rastegar about his journey building a successful and varied international career, and his hands-on approach to creating music and to practicing. Kaveh is highly on-demand in the LA scene and collaborates with some of today's most popular artists like CeeLo Green and Bruno mars. Kaveh has a fascinating background, playing a wide range of genres, from classical to reggae and punk rock. He is a member of the Grammy nominated band Kneebody and is currently on tour with singer John Legend. His story is a great reminder, especially for those at the starting stages, that a musical career is not just about big gestures and big decisions. It's built with the succession of little events that might seem inconspicuous at first, but end up adding up and can lead us to so many great opportunities and accomplishments. Whether it's a chance meeting, a conversation, or being exposed to something new - all of this can open a world of new possibilities. Later in the episode, Kaveh delivers inspiring insight on how to continue growing after college, going after your dreams, and keeping your enthusiasm and spark for music alive. Get ready to be inspired by Kaveh's story! He elaborates on: His story, from growing up in Colorado and learning to play by ear, to attending Eastman, and playing in the biggest stages in the world How he was exposed to an incredibly wide range of music growing up and how that shaped him How he came to choose the bass The different things he learned from the many genres and experiences he had as a young musician How he started playing gigs around his hometown and how that created the basis for the many strong connections and friendships that deeply influenced his career His experience at Eastman How practice becomes different after school – how we need to seek out teachers and seek our own answers How his practice today involves a mix of methodical exercises and creative experimenting His creation process, involving collaboration with friends and artists he admires, improvisation, and experimentation How easy it is to start comparing ourselves and how it is important to celebrate all the small victories How important it is to set goals     ALL ABOUT KAVEH: Website: http://kavehrastegar.com/home.html His discography: https://www.discogs.com/artist/538980-Kaveh-Rastegar YouTube Light of Love: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIgWIgmC_t8 Facebook page : https://www.facebook.com/kavehrastegarmusician/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kavehrastegar/?hl=en Twitter: https://twitter.com/kavehrastegar   Kaveh Rastegar is a Grammy nominated Electric and Upright bassist. Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

My guest this week is the incredible drummer, composer and all-round musical wizard, Matt Chamberlain. Matt is one of the most in-demand studio drummers of the past 20 years, whose eclectic talents found him working in various genres from rock to classical, jazz, and the avant-garde. I first heard Matt with his band in Seattle, Critters Buggin, and then he started appearing on all kinds of great albums through the 90's and 2000's. Chamberlain started playing in the mid 80’s Deep Ellum scene in Dallas where he joined Edie Brickell and New Bohemians. He then moved to NYC and spent a season with the Saturday Night Live Band from 1991 to 1992. After leaving SNL, Chamberlain based himself out of Seattle and embarked on a fruitful career as a gun for hire. He has racked up an impressive list of credits appearing on albums/tours by David Bowie, Fiona Apple, The Master Muscians of Jajouka, Soundgarden, Bill Frisell, Robert Fripp, Tori Amos, Morrissey, Phantogram, Pearl Jam, Kanye West, Bruce Springsteen, The Wallflowers, A Perfect Circle, Willie Nelson, Frank Ocean, Elton John, Brad Mehldau, Randy Newman, Miranda Lambert, Keith Urban, Stevie Nicks, Sheryl Crow,  and many others, as well as soundtrack work with Hans Zimmer, Marco Beltrami, Jóhann Jóhannsson and Jon Brion. Producer Lee Townsend is my guest on the show this week. Lee is a producer in the truest sense of the word. He’s not a performing musician, never has been, but has always been deeply into music and he brings a philosophy and easy going nature to sessions that make people rally around and perform their best. Lee is best known for his decades-long relationship in the studio and as manager for Bill Frisell, with whom he has made many records, earned Grammy Awards and countless other accolades, but he has also made some amazing records for artists as diverse as Dave Holland, Viktor Krauss, John Scofield, Charlie Hunter, Louden Wainwright, Carrie Rodriguez, and many more. He is an artistic member of the group Floratone, which is an experimental collaboration with Frisell, Matt Chamberlain, Tucker Martine, and Lee. He has also worked as VP of A&R for Verve/Polygram and as General Manager of of ECM Records in the USA. I thought Lee would be a great addition to the series here as someone who brings an intense love and passion for music to the table and has a long history of great records under his belt.
