Sanne Visser is a Dutch-born, London-based designer. She describes herself as a ‘material explorer, maker and researcher', who is best known for a string of installations and products using human hair. Since graduating from Central Saint Martins a little under a decade ago, she has exhibited all over the world and been nominated for a number of awards. Happily too, she will be one of the stars of this year's Material Matters fair – taking place at Bargehouse, Oxo Tower Wharf from 18-21 September – with an installation called, Locally Grown, that invites visitors to explore their hair as a new material. Essentially, people will able to have a free hair cut and then (if they stick around long enough) watch it being spun and turned into rope. Sounds kind of interesting right? In this episode she talks about: her installation at the Material Matters fair (obviously); how she became fascinated by hair in the first instance; the processes she puts the material through; its (quite) extraordinary properties; the ethics around ownership of designing with hair; creating new material systems; collaborating with makers, hairdressers and scientists; the products it's possible to make with hair; coming from a creative family; finding school testing; and the importance of teaching to her practice. And remember the Material Matters fair is free for trade but you must register in advance here: https://registration.iceni-es.com/material-matters/reg-start.aspxSupport the Show.

My guest today is American entrepreneur and politician, Christopher Collins. Chris served as the U.S. representative for New York's 27th congressional district (Buffalo NY area) from 2013 until 2019. Prior to his time in Congress, he ran for Erie County Executive in 2007 on a platform of smaller county government, lower taxes and operating efficiency and he defeated the Democrat incumbent with 63% of the vote in a county with 140,000 more registered Democrats than Republicans. Quite an accomplishment.Unlike many of our elected representatives in our 3-tier constitutional republic, Chris was a successful entrepreneur and business guy long before he ran for public office. That means he built something of value to society that employed others in our free enterprise system. After earning his BS in Mechanical Engineering and MBA, Chris started his career as a mechanical engineer at Westinghouse Electric. In 1983, Westinghouse spun off their gear division, and Chris rose to be CEO of the Nuttall Gear Corporation located in Niagara Falls, New York. In 1997, Collins sold Nuttall to Colfax Corporation.Chris moved to Florida a couple years ago and he and his wife, Mary, have three children and three grandchildren. Full disclosure: Chris' younger brother Ted and I were fraternity brothers at Syracuse University.Welcome to the Locally Grown Podcast Chris Collins.

Cultivate KC is proud to introduce Brien Darby as our new Executive Director! Relocating to Kansas City with her husband and young daughter, Brien came to us from the Denver Botanic Gardens. She was born in K.C. and still has family here. We are so pleased and excited for you to get to know her.Brien's food knowledge began in her childhood garden, where her father would set aside space for her brother and her to grow whatever they'd like. She helped with farms at her high school and college and appreciated the lessons farming gives to students as well as supplying food to the cafeterias. Her first paid farming job was at a 3-acre restaurant farm in Boulder. She created a crop plan to suit the needs of the five-restaurant group associated with the farm. By then she knew that growing food was her passion! To cut down her commute, she found a benefited position with the Denver Botanic Gardens and soon built a successful suite of urban agriculture programs.Brien learned of Cultivate KC in the summer of 2016 and thought it seemed like a one-stop shop for food access, urban agriculture training, support and advocacy. She'd been hoping for an opportunity to join the organization. When asked what excites her about working with Cultivate, Brien replied, “Who wouldn't be excited by the magic that is watching a tiny seed planted in the ground, grow into a plant, produce a bounty, and craft the very seeds that will start the cycle over again?” She enjoys living with the seasons and understands that each year from death springs a renewal of life. Along with the Cultivate team, she's excited to share these seasonal rhythms and lessons and make farming and food accessible to more people. She also recognizes that any job within the food system can be daunting, because we're in some small part responsible for a supply chain that provides the most basic human need: food. She said, “if we approach our work with a level of respect and care deserving of our product and our customer, we should feel exalted and awed by what we can accomplish.”Comparing KC's urban farming scene to those in other cities, one unique aspect Brien observes here is visibility. It seems in some parts of town, you can't go a few blocks without seeing a community garden, urban farm or community orchard project. Compared to many other comparably sized cities, she also sees more of an emphasis on farming as a profession in the urban space. Some issues Brien sees that are not unique to K.C.'s urban farmers are the rising cost of land and competition from development as well as the myriad of challenges climate change brings. Higher overall temperatures (especially nighttime temperatures) and increased disease pressure will continue to plague cities and, by extension, urban farmers.ABC PodcastFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/alwaysbecoolpodcastTwitter: https://twitter.com/thebobbykerrInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/alwaysbecoolpodcast/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thebobbykerrYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@alwaysbecoolSummit LendingFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/SummitLendingUSATwitter: https://twitter.com/SummitLendingUSInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/summitlendingusa/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/summitlendingkc/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/loantipskc

Elon Musk recently labeled NPR and PBS as “government-funded media” on Twitter, angering both organizations. Is he right, and does it matter anyway? For many years, I supported PBS and NPR financially. I just loved their music, movies and documentaries and their news and opinion programs, that while left leaning, were conducted in a civil tone. They at least made token attempts to cover both sides of a debate but things have changed and they are now peddling activism as journalism.  Listen as I unpack this for you in great fact-based detail.

Last summer, Hollywood actor-turned-cannabis farmer Jim Belushi hand-harvested Cassopolis’ Highway Horticulture to be the exclusive Michigan cultivator for his Belushi’s Farm-branded line of products. On Wednesday, April 19, Highway Horticulture and its retail operation Sunset Coast Provisions will be featured on Belushi’s Discovery Network TV show Growing Belushi, which follows Belushi, his family and their team at Belushi's Farm as they make their mark in the cannabis industry. Highway Horticulture Lead Cultivator Nick Luhowy said Growing Belushi filmed segments at their grow facility and Sunset Coast in Cassopolis, as well as at Green Stem Provisioning and last summer’s Blues Brothers concert in Niles. “What they’ll show about our facility is the actual cultivation, the actual plants, staff – in two days of filming they asked questions on every methodology that we use to put quality first,” Luhowy said. “That’s Jim’s thing, it’s got to be high quality …  we get along brilliantly in that respect. From what we’ve seen, the episode will focus mainly on the dispensaries, his new interest in Michigan and us cultivating for him.” Luhowy – who previously was nationwide lead cultivator for the Chicago-based, publicly-traded Green Thumb Industries and founded of Phenotype Farmers in Seattle – said his commitment to producing the best product at Highway Horticulture aligns perfectly with Belushi’s mission of creating a gateway to healing through cannabis medicine. The Belushi’s Farm product line is created under Highway Horticulture’s InnerState Craft Cannabis, which Luhowy said has Michigan’s largest selection of cannabis strains and strives to grow the highest-quality product possible. “Of course, everyone likes to say that,” said Luhowy, on growing high quality cannabis. “We take a great deal of pride in it by making sure we have more diversity, because consumers don’t buy the same thing as often as people like to think. … To give people that opportunity to find new stuff that appeals to them that we’ve spent six months vetting. It’s not a very lucrative process on our end, but it separates us dramatically.” While Luhowy is flattered to have his operation featured on a national scale, he said he is more grateful that someone like Belushi, who has great influence and reach, cherry-picked Highway Horticulture to be a partner. “I’m humbled that Jim is not just trying to expand for profit,” Luhowy said. “He actually wants to have people know that they can go to his brand because it’s cultivated perfectly, and it represents diverse genetics. He loves consumer feedback because he wants to tailor his offerings to the people of Michigan. You just never see that. Most companies grow for profit, or just high potency or something very monotone. He is a different breed – he’s got more of a grower’s heart to him than any celebrity I know. … “That’s incredibly humbling to see someone at that celebrity level so focused on quality. I mean, that’s the best compliment I can give the guy is he cares more about the people and the plant than any of these other celebrities I’ve met.” The Growing Belushi episode airs at 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 19 on Discovery Plus. Solar. Wind. Renewable energy. The Biden administration issued a plan that envisions the US generating 45% of its electricity from solar panels by 2050. Climate change, justice, and equity are increasingly on the hearts and minds of millions of people globally as we continue to witness imbalance upon the planet; the manifestations are glaringly obvious. Forbes magazine noted the world will likely quadruple the number of solar panels in the world over the next decade. But despite public wishes for clean green, equitable & safe renewable energy, there are caveats and dark sides to all of it. Conventional solar comes with liabilities around: safety, hazardous heavy metal waste & a lack of circularity around recycling, ecosystem disruption and devastation, as well as solar panels being discarded in landfills where they could potentially leach. The Harvard Business Review created statistical models that predict solar panels “might produce 50 times more waste in just four years than anticipated by the International Renewable Energy Agency.” And while the cost of solar panels has decreased, due to the dominance of Chinese production, the cost of producing reliable grid electricity with solar panels has risen, since panels are weather-dependent. But these critiques belong to conventional solar. Enter CHERP Solar Works [http://www.cherpsolar.org] with new designs on solar, both on how it is deployed AND manufactured. CHERP, using a nonprofit model, aims to deliver on the promise of solar as a safe, renewable energy by empowering and uplifting local communities and making solar accessible in underserved communities. Megan Anderson joins us to tell how CHERP intends to address environmental justice and economic inequity by manufacturing solar where we live.
