Throughout the program our entire staff spends time with each fellow, sharing expertise and knowledge from editing to scripting to promotions and technical skills. We mentor our fellows and guide them in producing their own media pieces. You are about to hear one of those stories produced by our Justice Capital Initiative fellow Camelia Achury, a student at John Jay College.Description:  The United States has incarcerated more than two million prisoners nationwide over the past decade. Survivors of violent crimes, like assault and domestic violence, suffer due to a lack of treatment and compensation which typically results in paying the price for the prison's failure to deliver safety. For the past decade, the Common Justice Organization has been committed to telling the truth about violence. In New York City, they operate the first alternative-to-incarceration and victim-service program in the United States that focuses on violent felonies in adult courts. They aim to transform the justice system through partnerships, advocacy, and elevating the experience and power of those who are most impacted. In this audio exclusive, John Jay College Justice Capital Initiative fellow Camelia Achury is joined by Emma Taverner, an intern working with the Common Justice Organization. Taverner has been advocating and recruiting advocates for victim compensation in hopes of passing bills to hold people accountable for harming others, break continuous cycles of violence, and secure safety, healing, and overall justice for survivors and their communities. “Whenever you get a chance to be in that space where you're asked to say something, say something, because someone is definitely listening. We all have great ideas that shouldn't be shut down. It builds something with you.” – Emma TavernerGuest:  Emma Taverner- Intern, Common Justice At The Laura Flanders Show, we're dedicated to providing a platform for diverse voices in the field of social justice. In this episode I'm joined by psychotherapist, Keeley Taverner, who runs a coaching and therapy business called Key for Change.   Keeley is refreshingly real. I couldn't help but be drawn in by her incredible energy when I met her and I'm confident that it will be the same for Fail Forward listeners. “When you've got nothing to lose, you're not afraid of asking.”   With a USP of helping people break away from narcissistic individuals, Keeley explains that her end goal is always to help her clients unlock their potential.   She explains that when you get a narcissist out of the way, more energy is available so that you can begin to follow your dreams.   Breaking free from a narcissist is at the centre of Keeley's story.   Growing up on a West London council estate, Keeley followed a similar path to many of her friends. She was stuck in a toxic relationship with the father of her two children and wanted to escape from an uninspiring job but felt she didn't have the qualifications to do so. Desperate for change, she turned to self-help books. Moved by a book about going back to college to get an education, Keeley decided to undertake a college access course. She followed on to complete a degree in psychology and a master's in person-centered psychotherapy. This overview makes Keeley's journey appear simple but that couldn't be further from the truth. Being from a mixed heritage, working-class background, Keeley often felt isolated during her training in a very middle-class environment. Throughout each stage of her education, Keeley found kind people who took her under their wing. She reflects on how grateful she is to them for helping her navigate new and somewhat uncomfortable spaces. As we've heard time and time again on this podcast, one of the biggest challenges in business can be a feeling of isolation. Having people around you who build you up and who you can run ideas past is important. That's something Keeley discovered during her higher education journey and when setting up her own business. A gem of advice Keeley gives in this episode is to build a trusted circle of confidants and to make the most of the advice they give. This captivating story of perseverance will leave you with a feeling of warmth and positivity. It's a perfect example that anything is possible if you set your mind to it. Synopsis Late in 2013, the musical world was gearing up to celebrate the 70th birthday of British composer John Tavener, but sadly he died, so his 70th birthday, which fell on today's date in 2014, became a memorial tribute instead. Tavener had suffered from ill health throughout his life: a stroke in his thirties, heart surgery and the removal of a tumor in his forties, and two subsequent heart attacks. In his early twenties, Tavener became famous in 1968 with his avant-garde cantata entitled The Whale, based loosely on the Old Testament story of Jonah. That work caught the attention of one of The Beatles, and a recording of it was released on The Beatles' own Apple label. Tavener converted to the Russian Orthodox Church in 1977, and his music became increasingly spiritual. Millions who watched TV coverage of the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1997, were deeply moved by his “Song for Athene,” which was performed to telling effect as Diana's casket left Westminster Abbey. Taverner was knighted in 2000, becoming Sir John Tavener In 2003, Tavener's Ikon of Eros, commissioned for the Centennial of the Minnesota Orchestra, and premiered at St. Paul's Cathedral—the one in St. Paul, Minnesota, that is, not the one in London—and Tavener came to Minnesota for the event. This book, published by Oxford University Press, is a look at street food selling, hawking, in London from Tudor times through to the first world war. What emerges is a story of a trade spanning hundreds of years that was essential for keeping the ever growing population of the city supplied with nutritious affordable food. Who were these people? Where did they source their stock? What were their lives like? It's a fascinating and sometimes surprising story.

The 72-year-old Toronto police superintendent is a family friend of Premier Doug Ford, and his appointment set off accusations of political interference in the hiring process for the province's top policing job. Taverner, who had been in law enforcement for 51 years, said in the letter that he was grateful to have the confidence of the government and believed his experience and skills would have served the public in the best possible way.

Premier Doug Ford's controversial push to appoint his friend Toronto Police Superintendent Ron Taverner as OPP Commissioner has been quashed by Taverner himself. Ron Taverner's surprise decision was revealed last night amid a growing outcry over accusations of political interference. An unnamed senior government official as saying both Ron Taverner and Premier Ford shared the same concerns that the appointment was being overly politicized and its in the best interests of front line officers for Taverner to withdraw. NDP deputy leader Sara Singh praised Taverner for making what she calls the right decision, but says a public inquiry is still needed to understand how Taverner was able to be appointed in the first place. Taverner has been in limbo since requesting in December that his appointment be put on hold until the ethics investigation is completed. On Thursday October 17th, 2013 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will present a dramatic reading of occultist and psychologist Dion Fortune's fictionalized account of one of her mentor's strange "cases." Dion Fortune was very influential on modern Hermetic magical theory and practice. Her occult novels such as "Moon Magic" and the "Sea Priestess," are considered classics of occult literature. Her work is carried on by the Society of the Inner Light. Early in her career her master in both occultism and psychology was a man she called "Dr. Taverner." He operated a private sanitarium in a secluded moorland setting in England and the 1920s. There he treated unusual cases of dementia that responded to his occult methods of healing and exorcism. Dion Fortune claimed that these "Secrets of Dr. Taverner" were really true accounts, especially the vampire episode called "Blood Lust" which we will read and then discuss on this broadcast. So, if you've ever wondered just what vampires really are and how they operate, tune in and Dr. Taverner will explain how the dead can possess the living.
