"I Didn't Look For The Fula Flute; It Came And Got me!"Our guest for this episode of MFM Speaks Out is Sylvain Leroux. Sylvian is a flutist, saxophonist, guitarist, composer, arranger, bandleader, educator, inventor, and prominent member of Musicians for Musicians.Sylvain Leroux grew up in Montreal where he studied classical flute at Vincent d'Indy; and improvisation and composition in New York at the Creative Music Studio where he attended classes by luminaries Don Cherry, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Karl Berger, Cecil Taylor and many others.A pioneer of African/Jazz collaborations, Sylvain is a foremost player of the Fula flute, the traditional flute from Guinea. He was selected as “Rising Flute Star” by the Downbeat Magazine Critics' Poll for many years, achieving the #2 spot in 2019.As a bandleader, he brought traditional West African music to Zankel Hall with his Fula Flute Ensemble and held the fort for more than a decade at New York City's Zinc Bar with his African Jazz group Source. His 2002 CD Fula Flute achieved cult status, and stimulated a worldwide interest in the instrument. His 2012 album Quatuor Creole was hailed as “a perfect contemporary music release.”He curated New York's “Griot Summits” that featured performances by 25 West African griots from five countries. He has performed and recorded with Emeline Michel, Adam Rudolph, Karl Berger, Hassan Hakmoun, Billy Martin, and many West African stars. As a maker and seller of Fula flutes around the world, he invented and patented the Qromatica, a Fula flute capable of chromatic functionality. This led him to initiate L'ecole Fula Flute, a music literacy project that graduated many excellent young flutists who are now re-energizing an endangered flute tradition.Topics discussed:Sylvain's studies of classical flute at Vincent d'Indy; and improvisation and composition in New York at the Creative Music Studio under Don Cherry, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Karl Berger, and Cecil Taylor, his time with Adam Rudolph's Orchestra, the jazz and world music Canadian music scene at that time and now, how he became interested in the Fula flute, his band “Source” and their time at New York's Zinc Bar for over a decade. How the combination of Guinean music and jazz has been accepted among Jazz audiences, his 2002 release Fula Flute and how it was received, his new album Qromatica, why he chose Julia Haines on accordion and harp and Mamadou Ba on bass, his performances at Zankel Hall with the Fula Flute Ensemble and curated New York's “Griot Summits”, his performances and recordings with Emeline Michel, Adam Rudolph, Karl Berger, Hassan Hakmoun, and some of the West African musicians he played with, how and why he founded music literacy program L'ecole Fula Flute, how Covid affected the people's spirit and economy in Guinea, government support of the arts, his business of making and selling Fula flutes, how he invented and patented the Qromatica, his activities in MFM, the present African/world music scene in NY, the cultural separation between African-American musicians and African musicians, NY's GlobalFest for presenting African bands to the US audience, the Visa fee raise proposal to Congress, and his future plans in the areas of music activism.Music featured in this episode:1) Zoe2) Mane Gauche3) In Walked Bud"Zoe" and by Sylvain Leroux, used with permission. There are different ways to unpack this playlist. One of them is looking at it as a travelogue that will take us to that music incubator that Chicago continues to be; to a scene deserving wider recognition like that of Washington D.C.; to Brazil, France and Italy. And it all starts from Free Form Funk Freqs' 3rd Galaxy. The playlist also features Greg Ward's Rogue Parade; Art Ensemble of Chicago; Alune Wade; Gaia Wilmer [pictured]; Janel Leppin; Cristiano Calcagnile; Emmanuel Borghi Trio. Detailed playlist available at (from "Outer Arm" onward). Happy listening!

What is the Art Ensemble of Chicago? Are they a band or are they an omen, a signpost marking a new direction down an unexplored road. Are those stage costumes or is that battle gear? What are they seeing when they start their concerts silently facing east? What is this language that they communicate in? What are they saying to one other? What are they saying to ME? These questions gripped Daniel Sadownick when he was a young, aspiring musician from the Bronx trying to make it in Manhattan. He has since become one of the most accomplished percussionists in both the Jazz and pop music worlds but he has never forgotten those questions. In fact, he has found some answers and he shares them with host Mitch Goldman on Deep Focus this Monday night on Jazz Alternatives. We also have some magic from the WKCR archives. And, by golly, that's good enough. Join host Mitch Goldman and his guest, bandleader Eric Anthony Person for a Deep Focus on the Art Ensemble of Chicago with music from the WKCR archives. I introduce Laini (born Sylvia Abernathy), Chicago civil rights activist and the first femme graphic designer to be credited with jazz album design. Laini designed for Delmark records in the 1960’s but I also discuss her fame as the art director for the Wall of Respect mural on Chicago’s south side. I discuss her four best-known album designs, including her use of artwork, interesting fonts, and vibrating colors. ---EPISODE PAGE---Support the show (https://www.venmo.com/Clarita-Hinojosa)
Melvin Gibbs is hearing things that I am not hearing yet. I know this from the choices he makes as a bassist, his work as a composer and especially what he does leading bands like Harriet Tubman, his collaboration with Brandon Ross and JT Lewis. So what is he hearing in the music of one of my favorite bands, the Art Ensemble of Chicago? Is it the knowing improvisation? the distinctive sonorities of the compositions? maybe the theatricality? the posts, slants and buttonhooks of their fast and far-ranging live shows? I can’t wait to find out!

The seventh episode of the Burning Ambulance podcast features an interview with cellist Tomeka Reid. She’s been on the avant-garde/free jazz scene since 2002, but has really begun to make her mark in the last few years. She’s got long-standing artistic relationships with flautist Nicole Mitchell, drummer Mike Reed, saxophonists Roscoe Mitchell and Anthony Braxton, and the AACM. She leads her own quartet with guitarist Mary Halvorson, bassist Jason Roebke and drummer Tomas Fujiwara; is a member of the string trio Hear In Now with violinist Mazz Swift and bassist Silvia Bolognesi; and recorded a duo album, Signaling, with saxophonist Nick Mazzarella in 2017. She also performed on trumpeter Jaimie Branch's Fly Or Die, two Nicole Mitchell albums, and Hear In Now's Not Living In Fear, and became a member of the Art Ensemble of Chicago. In our interview, Reid discusses her creative relationships, her recent recordings, and much more. It’s a really interesting conversation I’ve been wanting to have for quite a while—she was one of the first artists I approached about appearing on the podcast—and I hope you’ll enjoy it.
Phil Freeman talks to cellist Tomeka Reid.
The first episode of the Burning Ambulance podcast features an interview with legendary saxophonist and composer Roscoe Mitchell. Mitchell co-founded both the AACM and the Art Ensemble of Chicago, and has been one of jazz’s most forward-looking and inspiring figures since the 1960s. His latest album, Discussions (get it from Amazon), features large-ensemble interpretations of music originally improvised by a trio featuring Mitchell himself, Craig Taborn on keyboards, and Kikanju Baku on percussion. About a week after this interview was recorded, Mitchell led a new incarnation of the Art Ensemble of Chicago in their first New York performance since 2004. The group featured Hugh Ragin on trumpet, Tomeka Reid on cello, Jaribu Shahid and Junius Paul on basses, and Famoudou Don Moye on drums, and former AEOC member Joseph Jarman made a special appearance, reading his poetry accompanied by the others. The interview runs about 45 minutes; Mitchell talks about the Art Ensemble, his composition “Nonaah,” his other solo works, and much more. Stream it or download it below.

Un must.
