We are continuing with the panel format as we have a cigar brand exhibitor in Steve Saka from Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust and a retailer in Mike Szczepankiewicz from Cigar Hustler along with John and Aaron. The goal is to get insight on the event from all three perspectives as well as thoughts on the future of the event.

Coming in at #2 is the Sin Compromiso Paladin de Saka by Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust. If you have followed Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust and the career of its owner/blender Steve Saka, you know that doing offshoot blends based on existing lines is nothing new. In the case of the Paladin de Saka, it is an extension of the Sin Compromiso line. With this blend, Saka's goal was to give Sin Compromiso a little more robustness and be smooth at the same time. In terms of what the name means, Sin Compromiso means “Without Compromise”, and it has served as a slogan for Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust. A “paladin” refers to a champion. It was a name traced back to the days of Charlemagne and refers to the members of his court. Paladin de Saka is one of the most premium offerings in the Dunbarton portfolio as it's priced at $28.75 per cigar. Production for Paladin de Saka comes from the Joya de Nicaragua factory.  Paladin de Saka is highlighted by its Mexican San Andres “Cultivo Tonto” wrapper over Hybridized Ecuadorian Habano “thin ligero” binder, and a combination of Nicaraguan and Pennsylvania Seedleaf for the filler. The Paladin de Saka uses analogous tobaccos found in the core Sin Compromiso line with the one addition being the Pennsylvania Seedleaf. The Paladin de Saka comes in a 7 x 52 box-pressed format. It features a firmer box press than the core Sin Compromiso line. According to Saka, the firmer box press was created as a result of the incorporation of the Pennsylvania Seedleaf into the Paladin de Saka blend. Saka stated the Pennsylvania Seedleaf can be on the bitter side, so the firmer box press was a way to offset the bitterness. The Paladin de Saka delivered a combination of coffee, natural tobacco, cedar, earth, dark chocolate, and pepper. The cigar delivered a medium-strength, medium-bodied smoking experience.  The tweaks and adjustments that Saka made to the original Sin Compromiso really paid off. This took the Paladin de Saka to the next level.  While this cigar carries a hefty price tag, this cigar certainly lives up to the ultra-premium experience. This is the second cigar from Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust to land on the 2022 Countdown, and the second Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust cigar to land in the top ten. Dunbarton has landed at least one cigar on the Countdown for eight consecutive years. The Paladin de Saka is the highest-placed cigar on the Countdown for the company to date. Meanwhile, Nicaragua keeps a hold on its dominance on the 2022 Countdown. Of the 29 cigars that have been unveiled, 20 have come from that Central American country. This is a project that Steve Sakadid for New Hampshire-based retailer Two Guys Smoke Shop in 2018. The Mi Querida Firecracker was a 3 1/2 x 50 size featuring a long fuse much like a Firecracker. For that project, Saka released the Mi Querida Firecracker using an alternative blend that was stronger than the Mi Querida that was out at the time, the Mi Querida Blue. With Mi Querida Trique Traca (which is a name that refers to a large firecracker almost resembling a stick of dynamite), Saka worked with that alternate blend and tweaked it to be released in other sizes (minus the long fuse). One of those sizes that were added was a 4 x 48 vitola that was released in 2021. Like the original Mi Querida Blue, the Triqui Traca makes use of a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper. The remainder of the blend consists Nicaraguan binder and a combination of Nicaraguan and Dominican fillers. There are two notable differentiators with the Triqui Tracker when compared to the  Blue. First, the wrapper of Triqui Traca was switched from the traditional Connecticut Broadleaf Mediums to the rarer No. 1 Dark corona leaves. Second, the filler incorporates what is described as a “high octane ligero” from the Dominican Republic. Production comes from the NACSA factory. The 4 x 48 size is one that has brought Saka success on the Cigar Coop Countdown in the past. In 2018, the Mi Querida Gordita in the Blue Blend finished as #7 Cigar of the Year. Incidentally, this isn't the first time Triqui Traca has landed on the Countdown. In 2020, the 552 size finished at #16. The Mi Querida Triqui Traca 448 delivered a mix of mixed pepper, cocoa, blackberry, and earth. The cigar came in at medium to full strength and medium to full body. As I stated when I assessed this cigar, this small little size was loaded with flavor and it delivers plenty of boldness. The Mi Querida Triqui Traca 448 lands Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust on a Cigar Coop Countdown for an eighth consecutive year. Steve Saka has always demanded that the most exact standards be honored at all times. Coming in at #13 is the Sobremesa Brûlée Blue by Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust. Throughout his career, Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust owner Steve Saka has loved to take an existing blend and do some tweaks on it. In the case of the Sobremesa Brûlée Blue, it is a modification of the Sobremesa Brûlée, Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust's Connecticut Shade offering. In addition to a top-grade Connecticut Shade wrapper, Sobremesa Brûlée Blue consists of a San Andres Mexican binder, and all-Nicaraguan fillers. The Blue comes in one size - a Corona Larga that measures 6 1/4 x 46. Production for the Sobremesa Brûlée Blue comes out of the Joya de Nicaragua factory. The Blue even has its own packaging - it uses the Sobremesa logo, but incorporates powder blue into the color scheme. Saka blended the original Sobremesa Brûlée to be a milder old school Connecticut Shade cigar. The Sobremesa Brûlée Blue is on the bolder side, delivering a medium strength, medium-bodied experience. As for the flavors, the Brûlée Blue produced notes of sweetened cream, coffee, bread, pepper, butterscotch, and wood. Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust has appeared on every Countdown since the company's inception in 2015. If you are keeping score at home that means it has appeared seven consecutive years on the Countdown - tied for second all time for consecutive years. This also gives the Joya de Nicaragua factory its third cigar on the Countdown, tying Drew Estate. Nicaragua's dominance continues. Of the eighteen cigars we have unveiled moving up the Countdown, this is the thirteenth one from Nicaragua. In the case of the Sobremesa Brûlée Blue, it is a modification of the Sobremesa Brûlée, Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust's Connecticut Shade offering. In addition to a top-grade Connecticut Shade wrapper, Sobremesa Brûlée Blue consists of a San Andres Mexican binder, and all-Nicaraguan fillers. The Blue comes in one size - a Corona Larga that measures 6 1/4 x 46. Production for the Sobremesa Brûlée Blue comes out of the Joya de Nicaragua factory. The Blue even has its own packaging - it uses the Sobremesa logo, but incorporates powder blue into the color scheme. Saka blended the original Sobremesa Brûlée to be a milder old school Connecticut Shade cigar. The Sobremesa Brûlée Blue is on the bolder side, delivering a medium strength, medium-bodied experience. As for the flavors, the Brûlée Blue produced notes of sweetened cream, coffee, bread, pepper, butterscotch, and wood. Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust has appeared on every Countdown since the company's inception in 2015. If you are keeping score at home that means it has appeared seven consecutive years on the Countdown - tied for second all time for consecutive years.
