Climate change is making wildfires across Canada, the US and other parts of the world more vicious and long-lasting, as landscapes are destroyed and harmful smoke from the fires is spreading thousands of miles away. Today, we're going to learn about the worrying impact the fires are having on our air quality and how we can protect ourselves from inhaling particles that could have as detrimental an impact on our health as smoking cigarettes. Our experts are molecular filtration specialist Jennifer Webb who lives at the epicentre of one of the worst affected places, California, and Jon Holmes, who is Camfil's National Account Manager in Canada. He's known as ‘The Filter Guy' for his passion about managing IAQ to protect our health. It also puts into practice Camfil's knowledge and expertise built over more than half a century and that it is eager to share with its peers and wider audiences to improve people's lives. Our Vision : Clean and healthy Indoor Air should be a Human rightOur Mission: We want all companies and organisations to put clean and healthy indoor air on the agendaCamfil believes that real change can only happen through collaborative effort and wants your organisation to join the clean air movement and community. Then, the temperatures from climate change are rising everywhere. We get more and more of these hot days, which means even a small fire just gets worse. - Jennifer Webb A long time ago a customer asked me “Isn't it okay? Just like when kids play with dirt they get used to the microbes and this kind of thing to have a better immune system?” But the human lung wasn't designed to get stronger with particulates in it, it's just not designed that way. - Jon Holmes Air quality index is based on six compounds called criteria air pollutants, particulate matter, particularly the PM 2.5. They are all really worrisome because when you're breathing these gases, they're so permanently damaging to your lungs. And in fact, with ozone they will call it getting a sunburn for your lungs. - Jennifer Webb To put the numbers in perspective, in terms of AQI of say 150. That's equivalent to smoking seven cigarettes. based on standing outside for that entire period of time. In New York City, the AQI was 300, so that's 14 Cigarettes worth of particulate just by exposing yourself to the outdoors. - Jon Holmes Instead of snow days in Canada, you end up with smoke days in California, where everybody's just canceling activities for the common good of the people. - Jennifer Webb Making your workplace a clean indoor air shelter is good for business. It's great for people, but it's also good for profit, because you're gonna have happier, healthier workers that can certainly do a better job. - Jon Holmes Using a filter that's got higher capacity is an investment, but they can make it through a wildfire season if they've got a high enough capacity filter. - Jennifer Webb KEYWORDS#wildfires #mervfilter #cleanair #airquality #particulatematter

Covid put everything on steroids where everyone started to learn about it way more. Now the average office manager or facility manager knows infinitely more about indoor air quality than they did before because of the circumstances.” - Jesse Buhler “I think one of the things to bring humans back to the office is to let them know that the air quality in your office might actually be better than your home.” - Jon Holmes “What's becoming popular in residential spaces is water filtration. It's clean. You can see if it's clean, you can see if it's not or if it smells weird. Clean air or indoor air quality in your home could be one of the next things that people start to actually pay attention to” - Jesse Buhler“The number of filters going into a landfill comes into the whole project cost. Looking at the number of filters, and the actual physical amount of waste going into landfill, with a Camfil system it's 20%, or 25%, rather than 100% with a traditional system. There's so many different small pieces that add up to bigger pieces.” - Jesse Buhler “Growth and comfort cannot coexist. By giving back, as some would call it, we also receive. Of course, volunteerism doesn't just show itself in professional arenas, but when we do step up and into these roles for our professional associations, magic can happen. Our guest on this show is proof that getting involved won't only improve our professional lives (it does), but also has a positive impact on our personal lives. Oxygen may be the most important nutrient in all of turf management. If there is too much water in the soil, oxygen will not be present, and few plants can survive. In 1984 Dennis Hurley founded Turf Drainage Company of America. By using a few patented products, he started helping golf courses move unwanted water off of playing surfaces. Today Dennis, along with his National Account Manager, Zach Boudreaux, are fixing drainage problems with their Turf Drain system. They discuss how water moves across a water shed and how it can best be moved away from turf surfaces. By applying the principles of hydrodynamics, water can be redirected away from sensitive areas of the golf course allowing the superintendent to avoid the problems of anaerobic soils. Dennis discusses some of their tools that they run through drainage lines that work to move water away. He also covers some basic principles of how to lay out a drainage strategy on any golf course.

Bud Geissler is the Vice President of Business Development and Sales at Group Collect. As a brand ambassador for student travel and Travel Insurance, he recently celebrated 25 years in the group travel industry. Bud served as President of the Student Youth Travel Association from 2011-2012 and was the Chair of the SYTA Youth Foundation's Board of Trustees. Bud was also the National Account Manager at Travel Insured International before moving to Group Collect. On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Bud Geissler about his experience in student and youth group travel, and I was moved by his insights into the importance of the travel experience for young people. We also dive into how technology is making the tourist business not only more streamlined and efficient but overall more pleasant and enjoyable for everyone involved. What You Will Learn in this Episode: Bud's experience as a student tour operator looking after groups traveling all over the USA How the use of technology in the tour and travel market has evolved over the past two years What technology can do to improve people's experience of a destination The app that Bud is currently working on to enhance the on-the-ground group travel experience by giving them space to create the memories and to enjoy what's around them without worrying about the logistics of their trip How having the mobile ability to access travel documents will streamline processes How technology can facilitate a direct connection between the consumer and the group travel agent How technology can provide a direct channel for future marketing and trip feedback Why using a dedicated app can help by ensuring you have a consistent brand leaving your organization Why the group travel segment buying cycle is so different than the retail buying experience Challenges that Bud is seeing bubbling up right now in the group travel industry How Technology Improves the Group Travel Experience Technology — half the time, it frustrates the heck out of us, and half the time, it simplifies our lives. But the last two years have demonstrated just how significant a role technology can play in the planning and implementing of an excellent travel experience. Leveraging technology for group travel may not seem intuitive at first, but as this week's guest Bud Geissler explains, once you jump on board, you'll realize how valuable and user-friendly up-to-date technology can be in streamlining the travel experience. Bud describes where he sees the future for making connections in the group travel industry that provide travelers with an enhanced experience and travel marketers with an opportunity for direct marketing. Streamlining Processes Bud describes how when pandemic restrictions lifted, tour operators went from zero sales to 100% sales in a three-month period and how his company was able to support tour operators to launch their products and access operations systems support from a technology standpoint. Nicole and Bud discuss how the software being built by Group Collect not only gives access to a landing page for registration, but it also allows the traveler to register to sign documents, ask questions, and get important information such as where the local hospital is or how to get medication while they're on the road. There is no longer a gatekeeper in charge of ensuring that the travel insurance products or information gets down downstream to every traveler in the group because the whole process is automated. The Importance of Travel to Young People Bud also shares his thoughts on why student travel is a way to change a young person's life. He explains his philosophy that student travel connects curriculum to reality, practice to performance, and classrooms to careers. So when any young person has the opportunity to travel, they are gaining life-changing opportunities at a time when there's so much struggle and challenge in our society it's a gift.
