Today, I have the pleasure of speaking with John Samuels, Founder and CEO of Better Health Advisors. For over 20 years, John served as a senior healthcare leader in New York City's top hospitals including Northwell Health and Mount Sinai Beth Israel. As Assistant Vice President of Emergency Medicine, he was responsible for the operation of 16 emergency departments and a rapidly expanding network of urgent care centers. John is a licensed nursing home administrator in New York and New Jersey, and has served on the boards of directors for Mary McDowell Friends Academy, the Phillips School of Nursing at Mount Sinai Medical Center, the 360 Academic Sports Academy, the National Association of Healthcare Advocacy Consultants, and the Sepsis Alliance. John's philosophy, which also underlies his company's mission, is that superior healthcare planning and services are about mitigating risk intergenerationally. In our conversation, he elaborates on this way of thinking about healthcare and its implications for enterprise families of significant means. John also advocates for a wholistic approach to the health and wellness needs and solutions for enterprise families and their individual members. He tells us what he means by that and what is the scope of his definition of holistic healthcare. John then offers some practical tips and suggestions for families who want to be proactive about managing their health risks and wish to take a holistic approach to their healthcare needs and services. He also provides his practical advice for family members or family leaders who find themselves in a reactive or urgent situation involving the health of a family member, sharing some of the resources or actions they should consider in these critical situations. This is a must-hear conversation with a leading domain expert in the field of generational family wellness and holistic healthcare for enterprise families.

Sepsis: Understanding the body's extreme response to infection

Sepsis, originally known as blood poisoning, is a life-threatening medical emergency. Tune in to learn about the complexities of sepsis diagnosis, the role of lactate and procalcitonin levels, and the global health challenge it poses. Hear from experts and a sepsis survivor about the advancements in identifying and managing this critical condition. Sepsis is the body's extreme response to an infection. It occurs when a pre-existing infection triggers a chain reaction throughout a person's body. Sepsis can be difficult to diagnose because patients present different symptoms, and their observation can be subjective. According to the Global Sepsis Alliance, the disease contributes to approximately one in five deaths worldwide and in the United States alone; it stands as the leading cause of death in hospitals, leading to one in three hospital fatalities. Compounding these mortality rates is a rise in antibiotic and antimicrobial resistance due to overuse or misuse. Today, we're joined by experts in the field of diagnostics and critical care as well as a sepsis patient and advocate in order to more acutely understand the disease, its diagnosis, and the advancements in the field. In this episode, host Ranga Sampath, Senior Vice President and Head of the Center for Innovation in Diagnostics at Siemens Healthineers and Member of the Board of the Sepsis Alliance, welcomes:Heike Spreter-Krick a sepsis survivor who is now a patient advocate working with the Global Sepsis AlliancePatti DeJuilio, Director of Respiratory Care and Diagnostic Services at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, IllinoisDr. Eric Gluck, Director of Critical Care Services at Swedish Hospital and professor of medicine at Finch University of Health Sciences at The Chicago Medical SchoolMervyn Singer, professor of intensive care medicine at University College London What you'll learn in this episode:The timing of diagnosis and treatment is critical because sepsis creates oxygen deprivation in the cells.Risk factors like age and comorbidities can increase the likelihood of a patient developing sepsis. The biomarker procalcitonin can be used as an identifier for sepsis infection.Lactate levels, a chemical naturally produced by the body during times of stress, can be used as one indicator among others that a patient may be experiencing sepsis. In the UK, the National Early Warning Score helps closely monitor patients at risk for developing sepsis.IV antibiotics have long been the gold standard for sepsis treatment, but they are at risk of overuse and misuse. For many patients, surviving a sepsis infection is just the beginning of a long road to recovery.Connect with Ranga SampathLinkedInConnect with Heike Spreter-KrickInstagramConnect with Patti DeJuilioLinkedInConnect with Mervyn SingerLinkedIn Hosted on Acast. The SUNY Binghamton alumni network is rife with incredible humans who are changing the world one day at a time. On the show today, I'm proud to welcome Tom Heymann, President and CEO at Sepsis Alliance, the nation's leading infection prevention and Sepsis education and advocacy organization. While there may be obvious parallels between oncology and Sepsis (e.g., misdiagnosis, access to care, patient advocacy), the similarities end quite abruptly, as you'll hear on today's show. My only experience with Sepsis was when Tony Soprano got shot during Season Six, Episode Two of The Sopranos, "Join The Club."While I am grateful not to have dealt with a Sepsis diagnosis personally or in my family, Tom brought a Plus One in the form of Sepsis-survivor Bennett Kleinberg, who regains his comedy of terrors and how Sepsis Alliance became the support community he never knew he needed. Please enjoy a very serious show with a surprising sense of humor.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Over the years of the podcast, we have often struggled with questions of why: why pathogens act the way they do, why certain people get sick while others don't, or why we know little about some diseases. This episode is no exception - sepsis certainly inspires many “whys”. But for perhaps the first time on the pod, we find ourselves grappling not only with “why?” but also with “what?”. What, indeed, is sepsis? Ask a dozen doctors and you may get a dozen different answers. Our first goal for this episode is to sift through the various definitions of sepsis and what we know about its pathology to get a firm handle on this deadly consequence of infection. We then turn our sights to a thrilling period of sepsis history - Joseph Lister and his carbolic acid spray - before attempting to address the status of sepsis around the world today. By the end of the episode, your picture of sepsis may not be crystal clear, but hopefully the edges are a little less blurry. And helping us to de-blur the edges of sepsis is the wonderful Katy Grainger, leading sepsis and amputee advocate and on the Board of Directors of Sepsis Alliance, who shares with us her harrowing sepsis experience. You can learn more about Katy's story and advocacy work by following her on instagram (@katysepsisamputee), TikTok (@katysepsisamputee), Facebook, or by checking out www.sepsis.org. Marijke Vroomen Durning always wanted to be a writer but her teachers and parents didn't support that choice; they told her to choose something more practical. She became a nurse As an RN, Marijke literally worked with patients from life to death. Her first job was working with new mothers and their infants on a postpartum ward. One of her last clinical jobs was in a hospice. But Marijke's dream of writing never left and slowly but surely, she started working on developing that career. She stopped working clinically in 2009, taking her part-time writing to a successful full-time career. Although Marijke writes for professional-level outlets, she prefers to write for the general public. She explains that her writing is like the bedside patient teaching that nurses want to do but don't have the time. Marijke also wrote a book called Just the Right Dose: Your Smart Guide to Prescription Medications and How to Take Them Safely because as a nurse, she saw so many people who didn't take their medications properly. In 2009, Marijke joined a fledgling organization, Sepsis Alliance, as a part-time contractor. Back then, sepsis awareness was abysmal and there was little online about it. Over the past 12 years, the small but dedicated Sepsis Alliance team worked hard to educate the American public about this often deadly condition. And there is progress. More people now know about sepsis and Sepsis Alliance has become the go-to organization for sepsis-related information and support. But there is still more work to be done. There are two parts of the site for which Marijke, now the senior clinical content advisor, feels particular pride: The Sepsis and… library and the Faces of Sepsis™ section. Marijke gets upset when she hears of teens and young adults who are discouraged from following their dreams by adults who are supposed to encourage growth. She knows how that feels. But she also wonders sometimes if she would have been a successful writer had she not been a nurse first. This experience enabled her to develop her niche in the writing world. So while she still feels that her teachers were wrong, she did find her path eventually. Marijke lives in Montreal, Canada, where if she's not at her desk educating people about health and wellness, you will likely find her in her sewing room, where she is designing and creating beautiful quilts. You can find her professional website at medhealthwriter.com and her quilting site at MyCreativeQuilts.com. LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/marijkevroomendurning/ Twitter: MarijkeD

This week we have the honor of speaking with Katy Grainger about septic shock and DIC amputation Four years ago, at the age of 52, Katy Grainger's life was turned upside down when she nearly died from septic shock because of a small, infected cut on her thumb. Because of sepsis, she now lives as a double below-knee amputee who also lost the tips of most of her fingers.  When she became ill, she was unaware of the symptoms of sepsis, so she now shares her story in order to prevent others from experiencing what she went through. One in five deaths worldwide are caused by sepsis, yet few people have heard of it and even fewer can identify the signs and symptoms. Katy is on the Board of Directors of Sepsis Alliance, the leading advocate for sepsis in the United States, and volunteers with the Amputee Coalition supporting new amputees.  She advocates for policy that supports issues impacting sepsis and people with limb loss. She was described in a recent magazine article as “one of the nation's leading advocates for sepsis awareness”. Katy has turned the worst thing that has ever happened in her life into an opportunity to save lives and limbs. Hundreds of thousands of people have seen her speak or have read articles about her sepsis experience. She has impacted medical policy in the United States by speaking to law makers in Washington DC.  She has begun modeling and acting in order to represent disability in print and film.  She has written many short stories about her experience and performed them as monologues throughout the pandemic in zoom shows.  She is planning to publish a book about her experience and the opportunities that have arisen out of her tragedy.

My guest today on Episode 21 of The Bravest Kind is Katy Grainger. Katy is a sepsis survivor, multiple amputee, and advocate for sepsis awareness. Katy is a board member of the Sepsis Alliance and has shared her story at Congressional hearings, corporate retreats, schools, and national media such as the Today Show. She is on a mission to promote awareness to both how common sepsis is and how to recognize signs & symptoms that someone might have sepsis before it becomes a critical medical emergency. After developing sepsis three years ago, Katie almost lost her life. While she ultimately survived, she had multiple fingers and both legs amputated below the knee. What impressed me the most while talking with Katy, was her infectious enthusiasm, ability to thrive in face of adversity, and her sincere devotion to helping others so they don't suffer a similar ordeal. Katy epitomizes everything I strive to highlight on this show: courage, humility, fearlessness, and kindness. I encourage all to take Katy's message to heart as sepsis is more common than people realize and can have serious health implications. I applaud Katy for her willingness to be open and vulnerable while sharing her story. For more on The Bravest Kind, see: https://www.ryansheaffer.com/thebravestkindFollow Ryan on Instagram at: @ryan.sheaffer and on Twitter @sheafonfireEmail me with show or interview suggestions: ryan@ryansheaffer.com

In this episode Sepsis will be defined by three Healthcare Clinicians and one Clinician -- a Sepsis survivor. According to the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics estimates that, based upon information collected for billing purposes, the number of times people were in the hospital with sepsis or septicemia (another word for sepsis) increase.Sepsis is a potentially life-threatening complication of an infection. If sepsis progresses to septic shock, blood pressure drops dramatically, which may lead to death. Anyone can develop sepsis, but it's most common and most dangerous in older adults or those with weakened immune systems. Early treatment of sepsis improves chances for survival.
