The changes that will likely be made in the new school year due to the coronavirus pandemic will likely be long-lasting, possibly into the next few years. While we may see some positive technological advancements, we are also going to see differences in the way we educate our children and in the ways we help our children cope with the traumatic after-effects of this unprecedented event. Updating the current broken educational system is an important perspective shift, and today’s guest just may help you see things in a new light. Robert Bernstein, author of Uniquely Normal: Tapping the Reservoir of Normalcy to Treat Autism, joins Vickie and Amanda on today’s show. Rob is an educational specialist with more than 35 years working with kids on the spectrum and he has some great stories to share! Show Highlights: A parent can find their own child in some of the stories he shares in Uniquely Normal: Tapping the Reservoir of Normalcy to Treat Autism. Rob shares how he resolved a kid’s tantrums by playing baseball with him everyday. Temple Grandin, who wrote the Foreword to the book, had two words for Rob when he asked her take on it. How the book can be an asset to parents and educators. It’s not about good or bad, right or wrong, it’s a different way to do things. It’s imperative to get language from “within” a child. Rob walks Vickie and Amanda through a short exercise on perspective. Real, genuine friendships for a child should always be a goal. Connect with Rob! Welcome to the season 4 launch of 1% Better!0 – 6 mins : IntroductionHi there…and welcome to the start of the new season of 1% Better. Now to say things are different to when season 3 ended or when I last shared an episode would be an understatement. A big one. In this launch show, I touch on what’s going on in the world as of the time of recording (18th March 2020) with COVID19, Coronavirus, and Social Distancing very much the words of the time. I touch on everything going on in my head about what’s happening and also point to how we can start to adapt to this change in a more positive, proactive light! And how listening to podcasts can help. I also talk about my hopes of talking with some experts on infectious diseases, research and work ongoing on tests and vaccines as well as talking with some that have recovered from the disease.6 mins to 13 mins – Off-season RecordingDuring the off-season, I’ve been busy recording new shows, researching and creating content for more solo episodes and spending a lot of time putting together a new series within the show focusing on Emotional Intelligence. I also mention the 1% Better Community and how being part of this has helped me stick to my goals for the year so far! 13mins to 40 mins – Listeners’ VoicesThe final part of this intro episode which is different! How have you, the listener, become 1% Better? During the off-season I’ve been asking listeners to contribute some audio to the show talking about what they’re doing to become 1% Better (or more)! Here are just 5 that you might find interesting, inspiring, useful, and actionable. Remember…in this very strange time, it’s good to take action, set goals, and not just sit around waiting for thoughts to turn into negative emotions! The clips come from:1.Eoin O’Hanlon – Control the Small Things, let the big things take care of themselves 2.Jess Cohen – Stand Up Comedy & the 1% Better Community!3.John O’Brien – Mindset & Running!4.Seán McGillicuddy – Daily Meditation Practices, Sharing gratitude, Keeping your Head Up & Writing Poetry! 5.Darragh O’Riordan – Feeling better with cold water Swimming & the impact on work – COLD Water Swimming! 40 min to End Finally, I close out this episode with a call to action. More of your stories please!! How are you improving from listening to this show or others? The best conversations in life always seem to be the ones where you learn something new about the person you're talking to. Whether it's the cashier at the grocery story store, a colleague at work, or even your spouse...getting to a level you've never gotten to before is good. Special even. Today, while talking with Rob Walch from Libsyn on My Worst Interview Ever, we got to that level. It was unexpected (for both of us, I think), but it was good. After discussing his "worst interview ever", Rob shared a story that few people have heard before. It involved an airplane. And anger. And a stupid decision that almost cost him everything. It changed his life, and I'll bet it could change yours as well. Rob Walch is the VP of Podcaster Relations at Libsyn (the world’s largest podcast network). He hosts or co-hosts several podcasts himself (including Podcast411), co-wrote the book “Tricks of the Podcasting Masters”, and has been the podcast consultant for a number of big names including Tim Ferriss, Senator John Edwards, Jack Welch, and many others. SHOW NOTES: 1:05 - What does Rob Walch do all day? 1:31 - Is Rob really that terrible of a basketball coach? 3:36 - Rob cheats and has TWO worst interviews ever! 7:48 - A couple tips and tricks for a successful interview. 8:39 - Learn more about RINGR. 9:23 - You've got a great interview...now how do you best promote it? 10:39 - Rob nearly thrown off an airplane and arrested. Learn how it changed him forever. 13:09 - Email Rob at rob (at) libsyn (dot) com or connect with Libsyn here.
