“Roofers protect everything you hold dear. It deserves respect and we have to start standing up and saying we are not just roofers. I deserve a professional credential that shows I am awesome and deserve to be hired.”   Jared Ribble, Vice President of Certification for NRCA and Director of the Qualified Trainer Program   A roof is an essential part of every home. Sure, the walls keep the house together, and the floor keeps us off the dirt, but the roof protects us from rain, storms, and hail. Without roofing and the roofers who install it across the country, our world would be much less bearable. So why, then, is roofing not a respected job?   The National Roofing Contractors Association, or NRCA, believes that roofers do irreplaceable work, protecting our homes and businesses with skill and hard work. This effort shouldn't go unrecognized or uncredentialed. To this end, they developed ProCertification, and Vice President of Certification for NRCA Jared Ribble shares their mindset behind the creation.   Tune in for insight on why roofing matters, how we can instill meaning into roofing careers, and why anyone involved in roofing should reach out to NRCA and consider ProCertification.   Topics discussed in this interview: - Passing up the family roofing business - Returning to roofing after some inspiration - NRCA's approach to the worker shortage - Omitting roofing from trade schools and why it's a problem - Contractors should invest in teaching in trade schools - Certification addresses a growing need - What is ProCertification? - Which materials are available to be certified in? - How has ProCertification affected people? - What about liability? - Adapting ProCertification regionally - The Qualified Trainer program - An inside look at the Stories of an Extraordinary Industry podcast - What sparked Jared's passion for roofing? - Why does roofing matter? - Rapid fire questions   If you are interested in ProCertification, or are a roofer yourself, visit nrca.net to learn more. “When you're in a sales situation, the prospect knows you're a salesman and they're afraid of you. Because the perception is that salesmen always want to close the sale. But there's no mutual mystification. Everybody has to understand what's going through the mind of the other person. I tell people it's okay for them to tell me no if we're not a fit.”-Rolf Snobeck, National Strategic Account Manager at Tecta America. Sales are too often about hitting goals and closing deals instead of allowing the customer to be the focus. Our guest, roofing industry veteran Rolf Snobeck, has a different take. Ethical selling finds the best solution for a customer's problem through careful collaboration. A crucial part of the formula is knowing your company's offerings and sending customers to where their needs are met, even with another firm. 88: Takeaways From 500 Contractor Interviews With Bill Good

The Roofer Show

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 7, 2018 46:54

After more than 500 interviews with Roofing Contractors, Bill Good understands what problems keep us contractors up at night! In today's interview with Bill, we dig deep into the problems we all face every day in our businesses and what the NRCA is doing to help solve them. Bill, who has an MBA  from the University of Chicago, has been the CEO of the NRCA for most of the past thirty years. The mission of the NRCA is a simple one- to assist contractors and advance the industry. It's a hundred and twenty-nine years old, with thirty-five hundred members and staff of fifty-three. Half of the members do both residential and commercial and half of them do less than $1,000,000 in sales, so there's something there for everyone. Bill is due to retire this year, so Dave wants to draw on his vast experience and find out what's happening in the roofing industry from someone who really knows before he hits the beach.  As Bill talks with a large number of contractors each year, Dave would like to know about the types of problems going on out there and what can be done to solve them. Listen in today, and find out from an expert, how you can take your roofing business to the next level. Let's dive in and learn some valuable tips to help your roofing business! Today, Bill talks to Dave about: What his plans are. Why the average roofing contractor should join the NRCA and what they will get out of it, as it's pretty expensive for the ordinary guy. Some of the issues that need to be dealt with in the industry. The average apprentice joining the roofing industry today is thirty years old- what that tells us. The difficulties roofing companies face in terms of finding the right people to hire. The black market that has been created due to the government's immigration policy. The results of school leavers being encouraged to go to college, rather than going to good trade schools. How it is possible to advance in a number of areas within the roofing industry. The changes that he's seen in the industry over the last thirty years. Why roofs on a lot of buildings are the single most important component for saving energy, today. How the roofing industry has advanced and improved, in many different ways. The increasing government regulations affecting the industry, today. The love/hate relationship that exists between the government and the roofing industry and Bills concerns in that area. How the NRCA assists with inspections and various other business issues affected by governmental regulation. Health care today and the roofing industry. Why the roofing industry is in a better position now than ever before. How the NRCA has been involved with the building code arena. His thoughts on how the new government administration could affect the roofing industry. Business Quick Tip: Current and future state of our workforce is the number 1 problem in our business. Don't poach people from other companies. Make sure the word on the street is that your company is different and treats employees well. Learn how Dave used a Spring Carnival as a very effective recruitment tool. Paying a substantial amount for referrals is also effective. It's important to have regular meetings and feedback sessions with employees. Making sure you have a happy workforce is the best way to keep your turnover low! 76: What You Need To Know Before OSHA Knocks On Your Door with Harry Dietz

The Roofer Show

Roofers racked up over $21 million in OSHA citations in 2016! Will you be ready when they show up on your job? As the Risk Development Director for the NRCA, Harry will explain the steps you need to take to defend yourself from one of the biggest threats we face as roofing contractors. We need all the help we can get when it comes to navigating the complicated maze of regulations and Harry gives us the answers. If you would like to avoid a costly run-in with OSHA, you will really gain a lot from listening in to today's show, with Dave's expert guest, Harry Dietz. Dave has found that whenever he talks to contractors, the biggest issue that always comes up is problems with OSHA - fall protection in particular. Harry is the Director of Risk Management at the National Roofing Contractor's Association (NRCA), so he's an expert when it comes to this overly regulated industry.  Whether it's OSHA, EPA, DOT, or any other bunch of letters, Harry's got it! He will be teaching a full day course in fall protection at the end of the month (Fall Protection A-Z), so listen in to today's show, as he brings you up to speed with the latest. Harry grew up in a family roofing business in Chicago and he's been on the staff at the NRCA since 2002, where he has revised the safety manuals many times. He is also an authorized trainer for the ten and thirty hour OSHA Construction Safety Classes and he teaches the NRCA's Fall Protection Class, CERTA Torching Safety and Form Training classes. On today's show, Dave quotes some statistics which clearly indicate that if OSHA shows up on your roof, the chances are that you're going to be issued with multiple citations. So, listen in and find out what you really need to know, before OSHA knocks on your door. Today, Harry talks to Dave about: What he's been doing at the NRCA for the last fifteen years. The direction that he's seen the NRCA take, over the last fifteen years. Why it's unlikely that an OSHA compliance officer, on a project and looking for things, will not find anything wrong. After more than 500 interviews with Roofing Contractors Bill Good understands what problems keep us contractors up at night! In today's interview with Bill we dig deep into the problems we all face every day in our businesses and what the NRCA is doing to help solve them. Bill, who has an MBA  from the University of Chicago, has been the CEO of the NRCA for most of the past thirty years. The mission of the NRCA is a simple one- to assist contractors and advance the industry. It's a hundred and twenty-nine years old, with thirty-five hundred members and a staff of fifty-three. Business Quick Tip: Current and future state of our workforce is the number 1 problem of our business. Don't poach people from other companies. Make sure the word on the street is that your company is different and treats employees well.Learn how Dave used a Spring Carnival as a very effective recruitment tool. Paying a substantial amount for referrals is also effective. It's important to have regular meetings and feedback sessions with employees. Making sure you have a happy workforce is the best way to keep your turnover low! Connect with Bill: Bill Good Email: begood@nrca.net    You can read the full show notes at www.theroofershow.com.
