This episode opens with a major industry shift: Tim Cook's announcement that he is stepping down as CEO of Apple in September 2026. The team discusses the transition plan, the elevation of John Ternus and Johny Srouji, and what this "hardware-first" leadership style might mean for the future of Apple devices and services. The conversation then pivots to the technical rollout of HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) video support on Apple Podcasts. Joined by OG co-hosts Mark Asquith and Danny Brown, the team breaks down how HLS differs from standard video files and open standards. They explain how adaptive bitrate streaming ensures listeners stay connected even on poor data connections and why audio-only creators shouldn't feel pressured to pivot to video. Finally, the group tackles the nuance of accessibility and inclusion in podcasting. They compare listening to an audiobook to reading with your ears, emphasizing that the goal is always to deliver the message to the audience wherever they are. The team shares insights on the power of Apple's new video implementation and how it provides more expansive ways for audiences to engage with content.More Co-hosts!Mark Asquith: Founder of Captivate and original co-host of In & Around Podcasting.Danny Brown: Head of Support and Experience at Captivate and original co-host of In & Around Podcasting.Links to interesting things from this episodeEverything related to the Captivate Video Podcasting Support RolloutPublish Video Podcasts to Apple Podcasts: Captivate Video Support OverviewHelpdesk ArticlesApple HLS Video Podcasts: Help ArticleHow to Connect Apple's HLS Video Podcast Feature to Captivate: Connection GuideApple Podcasts HLS Frequently Asked Questions: HLS FAQHow to Publish Video Episodes via Captivate to Apple Podcasts Using HLS: Publishing GuidePricing for Apple HLS Video Podcasts: Pricing DetailsBlogPublish Video to Apple with Captivate: Blog PostApple Video Podcasting Best Practices: Best Practices GuidePeople & ShowsTim Cook: Apple Executive Chairman (formerly CEO - until Sept).John Ternus: Apple CEO (effective Sept 2026).Johny Srouji: Chief Hardware Officer at Apple.Marco Arment: Creator of Overcast and co-host of ATP.Accidental Tech Podcast (ATP): https://atp.fm/Robb Dunewood: Daily Tech News Network & The Tech JawnAnna DeShawn: Ambie Award winner and founder of The Qube App. https://theqube.app/ (If you are a Black or Brown podcaster submit your show!)Apps & TechnologyHLS (HTTP Live Streaming): Technical standard for video delivery.Apple Podcasts: Support for HLS video in iOS 26.4+.The Qube App: A database for Black and Brown podcasters. https://theqube.app/Captivate Growth Labs: Educational resources for podcasters. https://www.captivate.fm/growth-labsArticles & EpisodesATP 663: Defending the Honor of The Cheesecake Factory: The episode where the ATP team predicted Apple's leadership shift. https://atp.fm/663Why People Who Listen to Podcasts Are Suddenly Feeling Left Out (WSJ): An exploration of the audio-only listener experience in a video-centric market. https://www.wsj.com/lifestyle/podcasts-video-armchair-expert-killer-stories-kristen-bell-0e07d0beThe Audio-to-Video Roadmap: Greg Willits: Luma session deep-dive on transitioning formats. https://luma.com/qiqd3odtThe Audio-to-Video Roadmap: Mignon Fogarty: Luma session focused on strategic video implementation. https://luma.com/y0bbjgbhIn & Around Podcasting is a podcast industry podcast started by Mark Asquith and Danny Brown and now hosted by Elsie Escobar and Rob Walch, continuing its mission as an industry show that belongs to the whole community. If you enjoy the show, we'd love for you to leave us a rating or review on your favourite podcast app! OpenAI recently acquired TBPN (Technology Business Programming Network). Rob and Elsie discuss the relationship between Sam Altman and TBPN's John Coogan, the network's high production value, and what it means for OpenAI's public-facing brand as they head toward an expected IPO.Elsie takes a moment to celebrate Frank Racioppi's recent Forbes piece, giving him his well-deserved flowers for his thoughtful advocacy and committed support of the independent community. While the article is titled "There's A War Of Independents In Podcasting," Elsie highlights how Frank successfully name-checks the creators and shows that mainstream media often ignores. She suggests that while the "war" framing reflects the struggle against celebrity-driven network dominance, the real story is the robustness of middle-tier creators who are building sustainable, profitable businesses on their own terms. In this episode, we relaunch the New Media Show #643 with special guest Rob Walsh, VP of Libsyn. After a difficult last few months following the passing of longtime friend and co-host Todd Cochrane, The New Media Show officially returns with a fresh format and a familiar voice. In this reboot episode, we again talk candidly about the process of bringing the show back, honoring Todd's legacy, and where the podcasting industry is really headed in 2025 and beyond. Rob Greenlee and Rob Walch dig into the renewed 2026 Podcast Hall of Fame, why hosting it at Podfest Expo matters, and how this year's inductee class reflects both the early pioneers and today's global voices. They unpack what advertisers are actually buying right now, why mid sized loyal shows often outperform the “big names,” and how the shift from demographic targeting to psychographic and genre based buying is changing deals for creators at every level. The conversation also explores the rise of private communities and paid video ecosystems on platforms like Substack and Uscreen, plus the relaunch of NewMediaShow.com with a fully restored archive of nearly 600 past episodes. From YouTube and Spotify's “top podcast” charts to Apple's long running audio ecosystem, the two Robs wrestle with a core question: what truly counts as a podcast in an era where many YouTube only shows get labeled as such. They contrast audio first and video first strategies, debate download versus HLS streaming, and talk through how measurement, attribution, and IAB revenue reports reveal a still under valued ad market relative to radio and other media. Finally, they tackle the current wave of AI generated ads and shows, including legal requirements around disclosure and why so much AI content still feels soulless, even as tools get faster and more powerful. Whether you are an indie creator, a network executive, or someone who has followed The New Media Show for years, this reboot episode sets the tone for a new chapter that stays true to the show's roots while leaning hard into the realities of today's business of podcasting. Todd's influence on podcasting was profound: from launching one of the earliest shows in 2004, to creating the Podcast Awards, to championing open RSS and independent podcasters. His voice, conviction, and generosity shaped the medium and inspired countless creators. Joining host Rob Greenlee Podcast Hall of Famer are Adam Curry is also a Podcast Hall of Famer, Mike Dell, VP at Blubrry, and Rob Walch, VP at Libsyn who is also a Podcast Hall of Famer as we reflect on Todd's extraordinary journey and life, from Navy service to podcasting leader, and discuss his impact on the industry, his unwavering advocacy for creators, and the lessons he leaves for the future of podcasting. The post Remembering Todd Cochrane Podcast Hall of Famer and Blubrry CEO first appeared on New Media Show.
Remembering Todd Cochrane, Podcast Hall of Famer and Blubrry CEO On this special tribute episode of Podcast Insider, we honor the life, legacy, and impact of Todd Cochrane — our co-host, Podcast Hall of Famer, founder of Blubrry and RawVoice, long-time host of Geek News Central, author of one of the very first podcasting books, creator of the People's Choice Podcast Awards, and co-host of The New Media Show for more than 13 years. Todd's contributions to podcasting were immeasurable. From launching one of the earliest shows in 2004 to championing open RSS feeds, podcaster independence, and fair monetization, he shaped the modern podcasting landscape. His leadership and conviction inspired countless creators, and his generosity left a lasting imprint on the global podcasting community. In this heartfelt conversation — originally recorded for The New Media Show — host Rob Greenlee (Podcast Hall of Famer) is joined by a panel of voices who knew Todd best and witnessed his extraordinary journey: Rob Walch, VP of Podcaster Relations at Libsyn and fellow Podcast Hall of Famer Mike Dell, VP of Customer Relations at Blubrry and long-time collaborator Adam Curry, Podcast Hall of Famer and co-creator of podcasting Together, they reflect on Todd's path — from his Navy service to becoming a respected leader and advocate in podcasting. They share stories of his tireless work ethic, his unwavering belief in independent creators, his innovation in podcast monetization and measurement, and his vision for the future of the medium. Todd's final episode of Podcast Insider, recorded shortly before his passing, will be released soon as a lasting part of his voice and dedication to podcasters everywhere. This episode is both a remembrance and a celebration of a man who helped build podcasting into what it is today. Todd's voice may be gone, but the mission he dedicated his life to carries on.
This year's Podcast Movement convention marked a clear turning point in the evolution of the podcasting industry. I've been attending this event since 2018, and it has always been a valuable space for independent creators like us. But now, the shift toward corporate interests is more evident than ever. With the merger of Podcast Movement and Sounds Profitable, and the major announcement that the 2026 event will move from its usual summer schedule to New York City in September, it's clear the focus is shifting toward advertisers and industry execs. While this move might serve the broader industry well, it raises valid concerns for independent creators who may be priced out or feel sidelined. In a candid conversation with Tom Webster and James Cridland, I asked for clarity on where indie podcasters stand. Tom acknowledged that not everyone will fit into the new model, but there will still be space carved out for us. So while we're keeping an eye on how this transition plays out, we're also considering events like Podfest, which may better cater to creators. One of the most actionable takeaways came from producer Jay Yow, who stressed the importance of wearing headphones while recording. It's not just a technical recommendation—it's essential for clean audio. Poor sound can sabotage a good show, especially on remote platforms like Riverside or Squadcast. His argument? If Taylor Swift can wear headphones on camera, so can we.We also revisited the ongoing debate between video and audio podcasting. While video is great for discovery—especially on YouTube—audio remains the foundation. As Johnny Podcasts puts it: audio is your shoes, video is your socks. You can skip socks, but you can't skip shoes. Resources should go to audio first, especially since many YouTube “viewers” are actually just listening in the background. The biggest research insight came from Hal Rood and Tim Bronsil's "The Podcast Study," who revealed that most listeners focus on just three main podcasts, spending 75% of their time with their favorite. To stand out, we need to avoid wasting those critical first 30 seconds of our show. Open strong, skip the fluff, and immediately give listeners a reason to stick around. It's what separates a casual listener from a loyal one.Rob Walch of Libsyn reminded us again that shortcuts like “buying downloads” are scams. Real growth takes time, and authenticity matters more than inflated numbers. Despite claims of 4.6 million podcasts, only around 354,000 are active. The space is wide open if we're consistent and committed. Finally, we dove into SEO and PSO strategies. SEO helps our episodes show up in search results, while PSO focuses on discoverability within platforms like Apple and Spotify. To win at both, we need smart titling, backlinking, frequent publishing, and full show notes on our websites. All in all, the industry is changing fast—but with the right tools and mindset, there's still room for independent voices like ours to thrive. WHY DO YOU WANT TO GROW YOUR PODCAST? If you're like most podcasters, one of your biggest challenges you want to overcome is how to grow your podcast. I hear it often. Today, I want to help you dive deep into audience growth. IMPORTANT LINKS Here are links to those resources mentioned in this episode: Libsyn – Audio host for podcasters – https://libsyn.com The Feed – the official podcast of Libsyn – https://thefeed.libsyn.com Alex Hormozi – https://www.acquisition.com/bio-alex Dan Kennedy – Magnetic Marketing – https://magneticmarketing.com Taylor Swift – https://www.taylorswift.com Big Machine Records – https://www.bigmachinelabelgroup.com Podcast Strategy Call – https://podcasttalentcoach.com/podcast-review-questionaire/ Send me an email at coach@podcasttalentcoach.com. MAKE THEM CARE In this episode, we dive deep into the challenges faced by many podcasters when it comes to growing their listenership. You receive invaluable insights into why some podcasts stagnate and what you can do to overcome these hurdles. We start with the critical importance of making your audience care. Provide unique value in your episodes. Infuse each episode with authenticity and stay true to yourself. We discuss strategies to build a relationship with your listeners, such as cleverly weaving your episodes together and harnessing specific tactics designed to not only attract but also retain a dedicated audience. TWO SIDES There are two sides to the audience growth equation. To grow, you must spend time attracting new listeners. Then, invest time keeping your current listeners coming back episode after episode. Maintain regular contact with your existing listeners to keep them invested in your podcast. Reach out frequently. While many podcasters dream of reaching a staggering 5,000 downloads per episode to successfully sell ads, the sobering statistic is that only 7% of podcasts hit those numbers. That is according to Rob Walch at Libsyn. QUALITY OVER QUANTITY The quality of your audience is more significant than sheer numbers. Therefore, it starts by identifying your ideal client. Identifying your ideal target listener and developing content specifically tailored to their interests and needs is key to cultivating a meaningful connection. I share a few stories from my radio career, illustrating the importance of forging a genuine bond with listeners. It starts by being your authentic self, as mimicking others won't create the same loyal following. Being relevant, interesting, and true to your identity are the cornerstones of developing a consistent audience that returns each episode. You can't please everyone - it's better to focus on resonating deeply with the right people. STRATEGY VS. TACTICS You need a strategic approach to audience growth. There is a big difference between having a strategy – an overarching plan – and the tactics – the individual actions within that plan. I'm creating a workshop to help you grow your audience. I want to ensure it is extremely powerful for you. When it comes to increasing your downloads, what is your biggest challenge? Send me an email and let me know at coach@podcasttalentcoach.com. Let's grow your show the right way and for the right reasons.

Last week, I mentioned that I will be covering more than podcast advertising and that TWiT has pivoted to a one-ad model because podcasts moved to this structure several years back, and we were trying to stay with what performs best for our partners. We finally caved as it became a constant struggle to explain why our approach was better and the one ad model is now in place. Today, I am going to cover the lack of growth in podcasting and how it impacts independent networks. The American podcast market has reached maturity, and the number of Americans who listen to at least one podcast monthly is no longer increasing. In addition, there is a trend towards consolidation as Spotify, iHeart, etc. are buying and launching podcasts, while pushing for DAI on advertising is squeezing out independent networks. According to Forbes iHeartMedia's CEO Bob Pittman stated, "We're in the consolidation phase. So, the top podcasters get bigger, and it becomes harder and more fragmented for the smaller players to catch up. And I think that's exactly what you've seen as a trend line." He points to Serial, once the industry darling acquired by the New York Times for $25 million, now more of a cautionary tale because it was not worth it. Even Libysn's Rob Walch, who presented evidence at the 2023 Podcast Movement, showed the active podcasts with 10+ episodes on Apple have remained around 400,000 since 2021. Therefore, with all the new podcasts starting since 2021 and old podcasts closing down, the number of active pods with over 10 episodes has remained flat. In addition to the lack of growth, podcast ad tech is becoming invasive, and brands want to put tracking pixels everywhere. Brands also demand cheap CPMs with ridiculously short cancellation clauses, and they have unrealistic conversion expectations because they do not understand how it works and agencies do not educate them. All agencies care about is the bottom line. They don't even understand their brands growth goals because every time we ask, they have no idea. We care for our direct clients because we want our partners to grow, and the specialized attention they receive from us outshines everyone else. If independent podcast networks are going to make it, then they must diversify. Here at TWiT, we cannot rely on podcast advertising anymore, it takes subscriptions, clubs, and fan support to make it all happen, and even then, we wear many hats to make it all work. Subscribe to your favorite podcasts, support their sponsors, join their clubs, or pay for your content. Thanks for listening, and have a great day. Got my 2023 Podcast Movement Recap ready to roll, and of course, it all starts with YouTube. The best session I attended was from Jay Nachlis of Coleman Insights and Steve Goldstein of Amplifi media- their Thursday keynote was The New Rules of Podcasting on YouTube.Yes, a show on YouTube is a podcast. And you need to have a YouTube strategy, even if your show is audio only. Your content needs to be on the platform, or at least a teaser directing to your podcast. I'll explain. Folks are consuming podcasts on multiple platforms, and you can get them to open their podcast player if your content is good enough.YouTube itself was at Podcast Movement, talking about ingesting shows via RSS feed. This seems like a giant step forward, but there are some important caveats.Rob Walch's annual "That Marketing Advice for Your Podcast is BS" session yielded both some important info and stats, but also stirred the pot on some debates. He says your episodic podcasts on Apple should include episode numbers. We go deep on that.AI was a big topic at Podcast Movement. Use it as a tool, not a replacement, and always check the work with a human.Spotify was there, talking about video and how huge it's become. You can get your video podcast on Spotify, but only if they are your host. And that leads to a whole bunch of other issues. Finally, what does a bonsai tree have to do with your podcast? Leave it to the great Tom Webster to explain.

Bayport and its immediate vicinity in Islip on the south shore of Long Island have some deep ties to history. There's the Bayport Aerodrome with its vintage airplanes, the Meadowcroft estate of John Ellis Roosevelt, and the roadside sphinx of the Anchorage Inn from the early 1900s. But what would all this mean to a teenager in the early 1980s? Today we find out with Bayport native Rob Walch who grew up in the area during the age of video games and the Islanders dynasty. It's local history through one man's life, from a part-time job at Satelite Pizza to a position on the high school rifle team to clandestine forays into the Girl Scout camp next door. When I heard my guest, Rob Walch, singing on his podcast, I knew I had to have him on my podcast! He jokes about how bad his singing is and shared a pretty funny story about him trying his hand at karaoke! Rob loves the entire Chris De Burgh collection. So, I love that Rob chose the song "Don't Pay the Ferryman" by Chris De Burgh. Rob discovered Chris De Burgh in the 80's, while folding pizza boxes at Satelite Pizza, and it's stuck with him throughout his life. You see, Satelite Pizza had MTV, and Rob's house didn't. You could rest assured after Rob's shift there were plenty of boxes ready for the next day's orders. Rob had just finished reading "The Clash of the Titans" and couldn't believe this song was singing about the Ferryman!! Rob was hooked right then and there and checked out all music by Chris De Burgh. Now, this wasn't something he was bragging to his bros about in high school, but he sure would share it with the ladies to show his softer side. Full Show Notes

We are all different with these things called opinions and personalities, and even though I can specify a tone in some AI products like Word Hero it almost always needs a tweak to match your personality. So Who Is Capsho Good For? If you're not writing anything or struggling, this does a lot of the heavy lifting. In today's conversation, host Katya Allison is joined by Rob Walch, VP of Podcaster Relations at Libsyn, to hear Rob's strategies for marketers trying to partner with podcast producers. To Rob, it's important to keep a few things in mind when approaching podcast audiences:- Podcasts are more like magazines than radio shows; they have very niche audiences.- Keyword SEO is limited to podcast titles and has no effect when used in show descriptions.- Advertisers should consider the differences between show sponsorship and one-off advertisements.- Marketing efforts often have a better ROI when directed towards smaller shows with committed niche audiences than shows with mass appeal.- Video often doesn't indicate a growing podcast audience.- Marketers should take the time to actually listen to the shows they intend to partner with.- Podcasts and brands should have a compatible ethos when undertaking a campaign together.Rob's advice is crucial for marketers seeking to capitalize on a unique advertising medium.- Libsyn - https://libsyn.com/- Libsyn - Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/libsyn/?hl=en- Katya Allison - https://www.linkedin.com/in/katyaallison/- GRIN - LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/grin-inc-/#Content #influencermarketing #ecommerce #creatormanagementIf you enjoyed today's show, please leave a review and subscribe so you never miss an episode. Many podcast experts will teach you how to launch your podcast. Some try to help you monetize the show. But, they are all missing your marketing strategy. Chi's Podcast "Cheers to Your Prosperity" HERE Find Chi the Mindful Bookkeeper at HERE Enroll in podcast training "How To Grow Your Audience" HERE The experts want you to believe you should grow your audience large enough to land some sponsors. That is the biggest mistake you could make. When looking for a traditional sponsor, you need more than 5,000 downloads per episode. According to Rob Walch, VP of Podcaster Relations at Libsyn, the July 2022 statistics across all Libsyn podcasts shows the median downloads is 165 downloads per episode. The median is the middle. If you stack them up smallest to largest, the one right in the middle is the median. Therefore if you are getting more than 165 downloads an episode, you are better than 50% of all podcasts. Only 8% of all podcasts on Libsyn get more than 5,000. That means the other 92% of us aren't playing in the sponsor atmosphere. Only 20% of all podcasts get more than 1,300 downloads per episode. We need to devise another way to monetize our show. Chasing sponsors is a waste of time for you. Instead, use your podcast as a marketing tool for your business. Incorporate it into the rest of your marketing to attract your ideal clients or market your affiliate products and services. Before we get into the most effective way to use your podcast, let's talk about growing your audience. Even though we aren't looking to attract sponsors, the larger our audience the more effective our call to action will be. PODCAST MARKETING FUNNEL While you are growing your audience, you need to also be growing the business. I'm sure you've heard of a marketing funnel. You bring people into your world by making them aware of you. They are given content to make them interested in what you have to offer. Once they are interested, you get them engaged by getting them to take action. Finally, you convert the engaged into clients. It is a marketing funnel. Fewer people move through to each level making the process look like a funnel. The first step is awareness. Everything you do to make people aware of you and familiar with what you do, who you help and what you help them do sits at the top of the marketing funnel. Awareness activities include blog posts, social media, website, search, newsletters, marketing campaigns, conversations, media mentions and a variety of others. This is where your podcast sits. Use the podcast as part of the marketing strategy to make people aware of who you are, who you help and what you help them do. Create your marketing plan and incorporate it into your business. Maintain a consistent message and call to action in all of your marketing pieces. When people become aware of you through any of these methods, get them on your email list, not to your podcast. If they listen to your show without subscribing and never come back, they are gone forever. You can no longer reach them. If these new people get on your email list, you can now email them every time you release a new episode until they unsubscribe from the list. You can now nurture the relationship and get them to subscribe to your podcast. CHIOMA NJOKU Chioma Njoku helps entrepreneurs with their bookkeeping as founder of the Mindful Bookkeeper. Growing your podcast to the point of monetization is not a walk in the park. Today, Rob Walch, the VP of Podcast Relations at Libsyn talks about podcast advertising. He discussed how advertising works, how to grow your audience and some blueprints to being a successful podcaster. Listen for more.
Do you want to grow your audience? Of course you do. Almost every podcaster I encounter wants a larger audience. On this episode, I want to give you ways to grow your audience in 30 days. Here are the resources mentioned in this episode: Libsyn: www.Libsyn.com The Feed podcast: thefeed.libsyn.com Strategy Transformation Call: www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/call Listener Development Worksheet: www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/listener STRATEGY CALL There are times when we are too close to the situation to see the solution. As the saying goes, "You can't see the forest for the trees." You are too close to the details to see the whole. This is the purpose of my new Strategy Transformation Call. I want to help you get clear on your goals and how to achieve them. If your strategy isn't working, or worse yet you have no strategy, this one hour of coaching is for you. You and I will get on a one-hour call to discuss where you are now. Then, we will clearly define your goals. Finally, we will develop a plan to reach those goals and see if I have any resources that will help you get there. An hour of my coaching is typically $250. These Strategy Transformation Calls are only $97. However, there are limited spots. I can't fill up my calendar. I need to leave room for my full clients. This also isn't a high pressure sales call. We will take the time to get to know each other and build your plan to win. I'll show you how to get there. If at the end of the call we both feel I can help you in some way, we can discuss it. But it needs to be right for both of us. Best of all, you'll be clear on how to reach your goals. Isn't that worth investing an hour of your time? You can keep wandering toward success. Or, you can build a map and follow it. Stop wasting your time throwing things against the wall to see what sticks. Let me show you what has worked for many of my clients over the years. Get your Strategy Transformation Call at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/call. The sooner you grab your call, the more options you'll have with regard to call times. See which calendar options are open for you. Grab your Strategy Transformation Call at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/call. Let me help you reach your goals. WHY GROW So, why do you want to grow your audience. I know it sounds like a crazy question. Who doesn't want to grow their audience? But, have you ever stopped to ask yourself why you want to grow? Do you want a big audience simply to feed your ego? Sure, it feels good to have a large audience. We can boast to our podcasting buddies. But what does it do for you and your business? We can't grow simply for the sake of growing. Maybe you want to leave your mark on the world. The impact you have on your audience is powerful. The bigger the audience, the bigger the impact. Maybe you want to build an audience of your ideal clients to help you grow your business. Your podcast could be all about motivation. It could be that you want to build an audience that you can inspire and motivate. When you know why you want to grow, you have a bigger purpose. This helps you stay motivated when the going gets tough. When you don't feel like doing the work, your why helps kick you in the butt and get you moving. Take a minute and get clear on your real why. Go three or four levels deeper to get to the real why. MY WHY When I first started Podcast Talent Coach, my goal was to be an entrepreneur. I wanted to own my own business just like my family. My mom created and sold wedding cakes from our kitchen. My dad owned a gas station at one point. Entrepreneurism runs through my family. My sister created a marketing company. In Florida, my aunt and uncle owned a restaurant. Another aunt owned a craft store and my uncle was a handyman. Even my nephews are entrepreneurs. It is in my blood. But history can't be my why. That isn't inspiring. And, I grew very slowly. Once my daughter and son hit high school, I realized my time with them at home was coming to an end. They would soon be traveling the world. I was stuck in a nine-to-five and couldn't freely follow them. It became clear that I needed to control my own time to allow myself to travel when I wanted and work wherever I needed. Time with my kids became my true why. When I don't feel like doing the work, I remember time with my family and get to work. It is easy for you to push this step aside and think you know your why. But, trust me. Take the time to get very clear on your why. Write it down and revise it until you get those butterflies in your stomach, because you know what is possible on the other side when you do the work. QUALITY So, how big is big enough? I really encourage you to focus on quality over quantity. An audience of a few hundred who are incredibly passionate about what you do is so much more powerful than an audience of a few thousand who have a superficial interest. Build your audience of your ideal clients who want to work with you and want everything you create. When you look at download numbers, it varies from podcast to podcast and industry to industry. Podcasts in the big three niches will have many more downloads than podcasts in smaller niches. You can't compare podcasts in different niches. It isn't apples to apples. Shows in the same niche often differ greatly when it comes to downloads. Avoid comparing yourself to the Joneses. You'll only be disappointed. THE DATA With that said, here are some stats straight from Libsyn, the podcast hosting service. Rob Walch, VP of Podcaster Relations at Libsyn, has presented the state of the union a few times at Podcast Movement. He also provides data monthly on the podcast The Feed. The data varies greatly every month. Rob looks at all podcasts on Libsyn that were released between 30 and 60 days ago. On average, these episodes are 45 days old. This data is based on active shows in the month of April, 2022. These are shows that are releasing new content, unlike the charts that show all shows. For the month of April, the median number of downloads for all active shows is 150. That means if you are getting 150 downloads for your episode after it has been available for 30 days, you are better than half of all shows currently releasing new episodes on Libsyn. To put it all in perspective, if you get more than 1,300 downloads, you are better than 80% of all active shows on Libsyn. More than 3,600 downloads puts you in the top 10%. If you have more than 8,200 downloads on your episode after it has been available for 30 days, you are better than 95% of all active shows on Libsyn. 21,000 downloads puts you in the top 2%. And 35,000 on an episode means you have more downloads than 99% of all podcasts available on Libsyn. Rob also gives the adjusted mean. This is the average where he throws out the top 0.5% along with those with 3 or fewer downloads. This helps avoid skewing the numbers by outliers. The adjusted mean is 1,561. NO SPONSORS Only 7.7% of all active podcasts on Libsyn get more than 5,000 downloads per episode after being available for 30 to 60 days. This 5,000 download number is the benchmark for advertising and sponsors. That means more than 92% of all podcasts have fewer than 5,000 and really aren't candidates for sponsors. Chances are, you fall into this 92% category. You can hear the episode at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/thefeed. And if you aren't using Libsyn as your hosting, you can get your first month for free by using my affiliate coupon code of PTC at Libsyn.com. Keep these numbers in mind and avoid comparing your show to others. Focus on your why and your listeners. Serve and you will reach your goals. WHERE ARE THEY Your listeners are key. You hear everyone encourage you to define your avatar. Most of the time we create this vague image of a group of people we want to reach. That is not your target listener. That group is your market, not your target. One person is your target. You want that person defined so clearly that you can picture that person in your mind. It is so clear that it reminds you of someone you know. When you get this clear on your ideal client, you know exactly where to find them. You will know what influencers have their attention, where they hang out online and how you can get in front of them. If you want to get really clear on your ideal listener and client, download my target listener worksheet at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/listener. This sheet will help you get focused on that one person. We will talk about this quite a bit on your Strategy Transformation Call. We can't hit a target we can't see. You and I will define this person and build a strategy to reach them. Get your call at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/call. THE EQUATION Once you have determined your ideal target listener and client, you can now build your audience. There are two sides of the equation. First, you need to get in front of your ideal listener and invite them to your show. Next, you need to keep your current listeners coming back episode after episode. If you don't focus on both sides of the equation, you will not see growth. If you only focus on getting new listeners, it is like pouring water in a bucket with holes. The more you add, the more that leaks out. Your podcast doesn't grow. When you only focus on your current listeners, attrition will cause your audience to shrink. Many podcasters promote new episodes by emailing their list and posting on social media. Those people already know you. That doesn't grow the audience. However, it does help keep your current listeners coming back. To grow your show, spend time on both sides of the equation. HOW TO GROW You can grow your show over the next 30 days by following a process. Step one is defining your target listener. Again, grab that worksheet and get clear. Download it at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/listener. Step two is to get in front of those listeners. Tell them what you do and how you help. Make them aware of you and your show. The next step is to get them on your email list. Many people invite those people to listen to the podcast. But if those people don't come back, you lose them forever. Step four is to invite them to listen. When you get them on your email list, you can continue the conversation and invite them to listen again and again. Finally step five is getting them to come back. Create a strategy that reminds listeners to come back every episode so you can build that relationship and monetize your show. It is a simple, step-by-step process. But, it is not easy to follow without accountability. You need focus, be diligent and be consistent. Let me show you how to do that. Grab your Strategy Transformation Call with me at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/call. Thanks for being here again this week. I can't wait to see you on the call. Until next week ...
