Whoa Podcast About Horses Horsemanship

Ep 225 Whoa Podcast News Ep 225 Whoa Podcast News Welcome to the Whoa Podcast about Horses and Horsemanship. There's no guest today, just me, and I've got some important news to share about the future of this podcast. So, saddle up and stick around. When I began this journey in 2012, I did not know where it would lead. I had come to horses late in life. I hadn't grown up in the Western culture or in the horse world. I had owned my horse long enough to know how little I actually knew. I needed more. If you've listened long, you'll know I'm a big fan of Clinton Anderson. Clinton says, “If you want it bad enough you'll find a way. If not, you'll find an excuse.” You may not know, but I was also a fan of Adam Carolla around this time. While Adam is known for many quotes, I remember him saying, “Figure out what you want, take a nap, then try to get kinda close.” Podcasts were new. I bought a thirty dollar microphone, downloaded the free version of Audacity, and followed the step-by-step instructions on Podcast411. Now, I had this thing, the podcast, what to do with it. Another quote I like-and by now you know I like quotes- is, “When you don't know where you're going, Go as far as you can see; when you get there, you'll be able to see further.” So, I kept going. The famous horse trainer, Doug Williamson not only didn't know who I was, he had never heard of a thing called a podcast. But, he could see I was interested in horses and wanted to learn more about what he knew, so he invited me to his ranch. After getting to watch him ride a few, we sat in his office surrounded by awards and talked about his amazing life. I ventured a little farther and found ways to get myself invited to Working Equitation events, Horse Expos, and the Horsemen's Reunion where I met and interviewed so many good trainers. Not one of them knew what a podcast was. In 2014, I covered a local mustang makeover event, The Vaquero Heritage Trainers Challenge. When the event struggled to find trainers in 2015, I volunteered and got to start my first horse at age 61. I felt like George Plimpton in Paper Lion. (yes, that's a 1968 reference. Google it). Starting a horse from Scratch changed everything. So many trainers were generous with their time and knowledge. I was exposed to so many facets of the western world I had not seen before. I got to go on gathers, be in the branding pen, and lead trail rides. A highlight for me was riding in the same arena with the Mustang Man Bobby Kerr. I asked him if he would ride my horse and tell me what he thought. I didn't tell him I was having problems with lead changes. I watched in awe as Bobby did things on my horse I didn't think were possible. The podcast wasn't a money generating endeavor. It was an experience generating one. I've told you a little about the guest side, but the listener side is just as amazing. People would help on Patreon, recommend guests, heck, even set up interviews with guests. When I would get stuck and not produce for a while, they would email with encouragement. And, it's hard to imagine, sitting in my little studio, computer on one side, cat on the other, that anyone was listening at all. But, the emails would come from all over the world. It's truly humbling. Our horses have grown up through all this too. They put up with every crazy adventure from Extreme Cowboy Races to Working Equitation to Team sorting and more. I experimented with trainer advice, supplements, and tack. Those guys have seen it all. Our horses are well into their 20s now. They get to just trail ride and graze in the yard. Friends, I'm putting the podcast on a bit of a hiatus. Nearly 300 episodes. I never thought it would go on this long. I'm so happy it did. It truly changed the direction of my life. Now, before you start wondering, this isn't a goodbye. It's more like a 'see you later.' I've found that I've accomplished so much of what I set out to do with this podcast, and the time has come to explore other avenues—especially my growing interest in video and photography. Trust me, my journey with horses is far from over. I'll keep the back episodes on Apple, Google, Spotify and other places, up for the time being. If I come across a story I just can't resist, I'll publish. The Facebook page will still be around. If you're interested in what I'm doing with photography, you can check out my Instagram @johnharrerphotography, My videos are on my YouTube channel, JohnHarrerHorses. And, you can always see what I'm up to on JohnHarrer, com So, one more time, thanks for listening and sharing the podcast with your friends and riding buddies. For Ranae this is John Harrer saying, “Go have some fun with your horses.” Bye bye everybody. Thanks for listening. John & Ranae Episode #225 Support the Whoa Podcast with this Amazon Link. Quotes: 08:25 “I thought it was going to be “BIG” early on. I mean, before Apple even supported it, I quit my day job and went podcasting full time. So that was April 2005, I left a six-figure income to do podcasting. Early on, I  thought this had potential to be really big.” 09:11 “Where podcasting comes into play, and the strength is it's a distraction medium. It's something you can listen to while you're doing something else – while you're walking the dog, working out, doing yard work, driving to work, to and from, at work. It's something that you can have going as a distraction, as getting your mind off of the task at hand that's chewing up all your time. This just helps pass the day, and audio has always had that capability.” 17:44 “…when I got to that point where I wasn't worried about the recording anymore, I found it easier to concentrate more on the content of what was going on in the interview, and that helped me really find my voice.” 34:29 “I mean that's what we try to do. We try to help you get out everywhere because you never know where your show is going to take off.” 52:05 “I think everyone should podcast. Everyone has a voice. I think the biggest impediment to getting people into podcasting is always that they don't like the way their voice sounds. I just say, “Well, remember this, Gilbert Gottfried has a podcast, and if he can have a podcast, anybody can have a podcast.” Timestamps: 00:50     Introducing Rob Walch 02:44     The Genesis of Podcasting, and how Rob started in this space 06:52     Who are the influences at the beginning of podcasting? 08:10     When did Rob realize that podcasting will be big? 10:09     Did Rob have a monetization plan when he began in podcasting? 12:03     There is a lot of room for podcasters and it is a very medium niche compared to other platforms 14:37     What would Rob say to a new person who wants to get on board and start their podcast? 16:32     How long did it take for Rob to find his voice? 18:21     In a lot of interviews that he has done, is there any favorite or a really extraordinary one? 21:14     Rob talks about his take on Netflix entering into podcasting. 23:18     Monetization in podcasting – how it works, why people should know it, and what to take action on.  26:44     As a consultant, what is his take on companies stacking out on business without any profits? 33:36     The other platforms that are available in podcasting. 37:15     Who started Libsyn and how did he get affiliated with it? 39:45     How many podcasts is he currently and actively doing? 41:28     The high points of data privacy, and what it looks like without it. 47:15     What is Rob's feeling on the future of podcasting. 50:35     How was Rob's move to Tennessee? 53:08     Listen to “Ride On” by James Kevin O'Connor   Spotify Playlist: Did you miss the alumni artists on the dHarmic Evolution? First things first, let's explain technically what a podcast is: A program delivered via RSS. This can be audio (typically mp3), video (typically m4a), or a pdf file. So technically YES, you can have a video podcast  NOT ALL APPS WILL PLAY IT Google podcasts and pandora won't do anything with it, while apps like Overcast and Stitcher will play the audio, but not show the video, and Apple Podcasts will play the video and others will as well.  There is a list on Podcast411.com WHAT I ADVISE PEOPLE TO DO Go upload your video to YouTube for free and embed the video on your website. Then take the audio of that video and put it out as a podcast as an mp3 file. If this is something very visual and it NEEDS to be video, than make a second version of the file that is tailored for a smaller screen. This will take up less room (and be cheaper to host) and it won't take up so much room on your audience's phone DON'T MIX AND MATCH If you have an audio podcast I would not recommend mixing a video and audio podcast in the same feed. If you're doing a video show AND an audio podcast make sure each one has its own feed.  DO YOU HAVE MORE QUESTIONS? I'd love to answer your podcast questions (about any podcast topic), let's schedule a coaching session today at www.podcastconsultant.com/schedule

Part Two: Rob Walch of Libsyn and Podcast411 - The Lowdown On The Birth & Growth Of Podcasting In This 2006 Interview. You know this, right? The word Podcast comes from the combination of iPod and broadcast. You know that Apple made podcasting what it is today? You also know that the beauty of podcasting is the instant delivery to your device via an RSS feed.? But, do you really know all of the early history? This episode of Advertising Stories will bring you up to speed.By mid-2006 Rob Walch had already recorded 149 episodes on his popular podcast411 show. He also knew more about podcasting than anyone in the industry, still is, and he is brutally articulate in this 2006 interview. One interesting point rob makes is that today's politicians should use podcasting to get their message out. Podcasting is free; it is not controlled by the FCC; it can be any length and is very personal. It is 2020... where are the political podcasts? No, not the ranting shows. The shows from the candidates themselves. This entertaining and informative conversation was first recorded in 2006 on my advertising agency's podcast series, The 360 View. I had just started a marketing podcast, a bit early, but knew that I needed Rob's perspective on this burgeoning communication platform. He was right then and continues to be an industry visionary.Rob has been a leader in the world of podcasting since 2004. No one knew more about where podcasting was and IS now going than Rob. Rob's podCast411 is where it all started and is worth a visit. If you are a broadcaster, publisher, or listener, Rob's history and insights will help you understand why podcasting is booming.Make sure you meet Rob on LinkedIn -- plus he is now VP of Podcaster Relations at Libsyn. There will soon be a follow-up episode. Stay tuned.Check out Part One:  Rob Walch | Predicting The Future Of Podcasting. Was He Right? Spoiler Alert... Yes. | EP: 004A nice thing for me... http://www.alainguillot.com/rob-walch/ Rob Walch is the VP of Podcaster Relations of Libsyn, the podcasting host for my podcast, the Alain Guillot Podcast. Rob got into podcasting because he was looking for a hobby. The hobby became a passion, the passion overwhelmed him and then it became the career. Rob started podcasting on late 2004, he was doing his podcast out of his own computer server, but he had a high profile guest at his podcast show podCast411 and he was afraid his computer server wasn't going to be able to handle the traffic, so he opened an account with Libsyn on 2005. there is more time to consume audio than there is to consume any other medium of communication. Podcast has been continuously growing throughout the years, one of the main reason is that there is more time to consume audio than there is to consume any other medium of communication. People listen to a podcast while Driving in the car, Working out, Walking the dog, Doing chores around the house People can easily listen to a 30-minute podcast and feel engaged, while the attention grab for a social media video is about 3 minutes, and the engagement with other social media is just seconds. When it comes to blogs, the ratio of blogs to podcast is about 1,000 to 1. There are 1,000 blogs for each podcast out there. 42% of the US population read blogs in a given month while 32% listen to podcasts. So while there are more bloggers than podcasters, the consumption is closer. This means that there is a higher opportunity to deliver a message to people as a podcaster than as a blogger. As a business person, imagine that you get the opportunity to sit in a room with 500 of your clients, or prospective clients, and you get to talk about your product, and you get to talk to them each week. Would that be interesting to you? How much is that worth to you? How often do you get up on stage and talk to 100 people? would that be good for your business? That's what podcast podcasting does for you. You get to speak to your customers, your audience, you get to educate them about your product, entertain them, inform them, answer their question, help them with their problems. If one of your goals as a business person is get up and speak publicly at events like this one or trade shows,  you are more likely to be chosen if you are podcaster than if you use any of the other social media. If you can go to event organizers and give them a link to your podcast, that will give you a distinctive advantage over other people who are also trying to speak. The equipment to start a podcast is just a microphone (Samsun Q2U) and a sound editing software such as Garage Band, Adobe Editions, or Audacity (Free). Your whole podcasting equipment would cost you less than $100. How big is podcasting? Sirius XM 35 million monthly subscribers Spotify is about 55 million subscribers Pandora is about 68 million Podcasting is over 90 million subscribers. Can a person make money with podcasting? Most people never make money. Only 7% of the shows get up to 5,000 downloads per episode which are where people need to be to start monetizing. The medium number of downloads per episode is 140 downloads per episode How can a person grow a podcast? Do a show of a topic that you like. Commit to doing a podcast long term Do it regularly Engage with the listener Listen to feedback Improve Which are the biggest shows in English? The Joe Rogan Experience ( from 150,000 to 3 million downloads per episode.) Dan Carlin' Hard Core History (Multiple millions of downloads per episode.) Is it better to have a long episode or a short episode? The biggest episodes tend to be longer. Dan Carlin's episodes are about 6 hours long. Joe Rogan's episodes are about 2-3 hours long.  Those show getting over 100,000 downloads per episode, 84% were 51 minutes or longer #1 tip for podcasters Have fun. This week's Flash Back Friday takes back to Episode 53 from April 2012. For those new to podcasting, terms like RSS Feed, media hosting, and platforms can be a foreign language. Jason Hartman interviews long-time podcaster, Rob Walch, Vice President of Podcaster Relations for Wizzard Media/Libsyn, about his career in podcasting. Rob talks about starting his first podcast, Podcast411, in 2004, which he began in order to teach the ins and outs of the trade to others aspiring to get in on this type of media delivery. He lists the best sources for statistics, such as Libsyn, Feedburner, and Blubrry. Not only is this a great exercise for you to distill the essence of your podcast, but it also helps the greater podcasting community get to know each other better! Send them into thefeed(at)libsyn(dot)com! Some Elsie feedback about sending in your promos Leave your podcast name and URL when sending in your promos…or any communication for that matter! Make sure when you send in your show promo, your name and your show are prominently shown in the email, as well as a link back to your website or any other social media properties that you'd like to share with us. This makes it super easy for me to connect with you and PROMOTE you. I do my best to link back to you in as many I've been getting people that have been sending me promos that have no URL anywhere, no email signature and the email address that it comes from doesn't help PLUS the name they've named the promo in no way helps to tell me what the podcast is either. It would make my life easier if you could simply offer that information Libsyn Power Tips How to get two different Media players from your one libsyn account Rob has 2 media players on Podcast411 and today in iOS. If you go to Podcast411.com right now you will see a big player top center - with the artwork for Rich Eisens Podcast (at the time of this writing) - that is his show level player - it has in the artwork and it keeps up to date whenever he publishes a new episode. He doesn't do anything to update it. If you scroll down you will see the episode level players - those stay fixed per the episode they are assigned. How you get both is the following. First you set up the player you want for the episode level. You do that by checking out this support article. Get the size and type you want - then copy the embed code and paste to your site. Next - Set up the player you want for the per episode posts. And leave it set there. Then when you publish your next episode at the end after you hit publish you will get the embed code for just that episode - per the size / type you set up. But wherever you previously embedded the Show level player - it will continue to update to show the most recent episode. URL's To Use when Direct Linking Sometime on websites or twitter we will see people linking to their files but with the wrong URL. They will be using the URL - where their file redirects to. For example it may be - http://ec.libsyn.com/…. or http://hwcdn.libsyn.com…. Those are the wrong URL's to use - they are temp URL's - and can and WILL break in the future. The URL you want to use for direct links to your media files is http://traffic.libsyn.com/YOURSLUG/FILENAME If you check your links and it is not traffic after the http:// - you are doing it wrong. It also can effect your stats - as in not getting counted. The real issue is anything other than the traffic link is a temp URL - and will in the future break - not that it may break - it WILL BREAK. Will using your city's name in your podcast episode get you in trouble? Per Rob's email below: “Hi Rob, this evening I went to a community meeting in Inglewood I go to every month. They love the concept of my radio show. But the block club president suggests I should call the councilman in the city or speak to the city legal lawyer to find out if it's OK to use Inglewood in my title. Only word I know is registered is Realtor(r) what do you suggest I do to verify its OK. thank you for your time” Read this article. The second letter in the article sums it up nicely. In other words - just use Inglewood in your show's name. And if anyone gives you grief - send them the link above. Feed not updating in iTunes This next one is an issue regarding those using Feedburner and a problem with the Podcasts App. A Libsyn user was having problems when listeners tapped to download an episode in the Podcasts App - It streamed fine - but it would not download into the app. It would give an error and time out. We figured out it was not the Libsyn feed - as putting that in direct to the Podcasts App worked fine. It wound up being the person was using Smartcast and Stats for Feedburner. When they turned those items off - Then the downloads started up fine. So if you are using Feedburner - check your show in the Podcasts App and see if you can get it to download, if not make sure to deselect all the smartcast and stats options in Feedburner - which you really don't need anyway if you have Libsyn as your source feed. That issue would be for anyone using Feedburner regardless of where you host or what your source feed is - there is something going on with the Podcasts App - that does not like smartcast and stats options in Feedburner.
