Join Jimmy on his inaugural visit to Buffalo, NY with our guide Ethan Cox, co-founder and co-owner of Community Beer Works. Returning guest Ethan is an esteemed brewer, beer judge, beer history writer, and overall authority on beer in the state of NY.Ethan details the journey from homebrewer to Community Beer Works, which started after he got immersed in Irish pub culture while studying abroad. After coming back to Boston, the next step for Ethan was buying a beer making kit. From there, Ethan trekked up state to Buffalo, NY where he joined local home brewing clubs. There was only one brewery in Buffalo when Ethan moved there - all the historic breweries in town went out of business in the early 70's - and he saw a gap in the beer scene that needed filling. That took the form of Community Beer Works, which started as a nano-brewery (just 3 half-kegs per batch!), but has grown into an award-winning institution of Buffalo's West Side.If you want to dig deeper into Buffalo beer, check out “Buffalo Beer: The History of Brewing in the Nickel City”, by Mike Rizzo and Ethan Cox.Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. Are we getting the full story behind Trans Mountain? Does the pipeline still make economic sense? Can it survive legal challenges from First Nations, municipal governments and the province of B.C.? And is it a good investment for Canada, or is it a costly white elephant that will haunt the country for years to come? Ricochet editor Ethan Cox is joined by National Observer editor Mike De Souza and Senior Research Analyst Lorne Stockman of Oil Change International for an in-depth conversation about all this and more on this special bonus episode of Unpacking the News.
In the conclusion to our year-end conversation, Ricochet co-founder Ethan Cox and Jacobin Podcast Coordinator and Associate Editor Micah Utrecht join host Andre Goulet to submit projections and predictions for the year to come, including: * anticipating the death of the Kinder Morgan pipeline * watching Alberta and B.C. NDP efforts to balance resource extraction with social democratic governance * will marijuana legalization in Canada make everything better? (short answer: an emphatic ‘no’) Plus: how will the Bernie Sanders effect influence the further expansion of the American Left, and what does it mean for the surging popularity of the Democratic Socialists of America? Founded in 2014 as a national public interest media outlet, Ricochet stands today as Canada's only bilingual, crowd-funded news source. On this episode, two of the co-founders, Gabrielle Brassard-Lecours and Ethan Cox from the French and English editions, discuss the experience of founding a new media outlet, talk about the project's origins in the 2012 Quebec Student Strike and reflect on Ricochet's growth over the past two years.
Since 2012’s student strike, police in the city of Montreal have been using a bylaw called P-6 to shut down peaceful protests and mass arrest participants. Critics have long argued that the bylaw was unconstitutional, and last month a Quebec Superior Court judge came to the same conclusion in a landmark ruling striking down controversial provisions of the bylaw. Julien Villeneuve, aka Anarchopanda, is the lead plaintiff in the lawsuit which triggered the Superior Court ruling. Ethan Cox is an editor and co-founder of Ricochet, and has been covering this story since 2012. In this conversation, they discuss what the end of this dark and embarrassing chapter in Quebec's history means for the state of civil liberties in Montreal.
