Season 4, episode 12: New Man. Megan cannot Maths this episode and Chris hopes this quality of Buffy can last forever – but as Mabel points out this is one of the least rated seasons! Looks like there's more good eps here then people give it credit for! Megan also devastates Chris with a major spoiler on the future of Ethan Rayne.. and it's all Name That Minor Character's fault. It's late at night in the Sunnydale library, and Buffy is driving Giles crazy with her workout beats. Outside, a man is frantically looking for Giles, but as he is banging on the library door, a zombie woman strangles him to death before falling to the ground and melting. Police question Giles, as the dead man was carrying a paper with Giles' name and address. When Giles sees the body, he recognizes the man as a friend from his past, twenty years ago.Buffy becomes worried about Giles when he begins acting strangely, missing his Watcher duties, staying in and drinking alone. She finds Ethan Rayne, who owned the Halloween shop, skulking in the library. Ethan is looking for Giles and references Eyghon - a demon that Giles, Ethan, and other friends experimented with when they were rebellious kids. Eyghon has returned to kill all of Giles' old gang, and only he and Ethan remain. After a scuffle in the library, unbeknownst to the Scoobies, Eyghon jumps into Jenny's body. The possession of Jenny grows stronger, but Willow's plan saves her. They trick Eyghon into jumping into Angel, who fights him off with his inner demon. Ethan has run off, and although everyone is technically safe, Jenny is shaken and seems to have lost trust in Giles.CreditsHosted by Allie Press & Nick MercerEdited by Allie PressMusic by InflatonCultArtwork by Charlotte Fleming DesignConsultation by Evo TerraConnect with us on social media!Email: tabularasabpod@gmail.comTwitter, Instagram, Facebook, Tiktok: @tabularasabpodConnect with Allie on social media:Twitter, Instagram: @DaughterpickTiktok: @futureblackcatbuymeacoffee.com/AlliePressVenmo: Allie-Press

Special guest Kendare Blake, author of In Every Generation, joins Steph and Kara to recap this Giles-centric episode. Buffy introduces the new man in her life—Riley—to her old man, Giles, but she leaves out the part where Riley is a commando and Professor Walsh is his mom—er, commanding officer. Leave it up to Xander to spoil that for Giles, who then lets his guard down around Ethan Rayne and is turned into a demon for his troubles. Determined to get out of this pickle without asking for Buffy, Giles turns to the one person he can count on … Spike. Hear us discuss… Who is worse at keeping secrets: Riley or Xander? Prepare for … Giles slander? Steph is as surprised as you. Poor Giles's house. Again. Spike back on his evil bullshit? Yes, please! Riley can barely take Ethan Rayne yet he thinks he can take Buffy? Trigger warnings Sexism

Giles is feeling directionless and out-of-the-Scooby-loop as a middle aged, independently wealthy former librarian. His day goes from bad to worse when he's transformed into a demon by his old flame Ethan Rayne (we're making it canon). The Buffy Boys are shipping clapped out warlocks in S04E12 "A New Man". Key Buffy Bits from this episode include: The Bemused Beast Within: ageing as othering in a youth focused setting "Father? Figures...": the family bond expressed in adversary and adversity Giles's pumped up demon traps and glutes "And you're what? Shocked and disappointed? I'm evil." Mystically tainted candy (courtesy of Ethan Rayne) sends Sunnydale's adult population into an emotional time warp, reverting them to reckless teenage personalities. Can Buffy see through the Mayor's distraction to save some delicious babies from being a snake-demon's snack? The Buffy Boys are in another dimension, with voyeuristic intention - it's S03E06 "Band Candy". Key Buffy Bits from this episode include: Disturbed second childhood: the inverted fairytale of the immature parental figures Anthony Stewart Head's natural north London accent and 90's lesbian fashion sense Sub-contracting Evil: the banality of work-a-day demonic forces in Sunnydale's middle American nightmare Untitled Goose Poems "Giles at sixteen? In this episode of Fire Bad, Tree Pretty, Amanda and Lydia discuss S02E06 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, "Halloween." Points of interest: a vampire walks into a bar, Cordelia the sick burn phantom, be free Larry!, toxic masculinity ruins the party again, adorable snooping hijinks, hunka hunka burning dick, the right to vote > being sold as chattel to a baron at the age of 12, a care bear with fangs, the relatable nightmare of picking up something in a store and having it make a super loud noise, Ethan Rayne, Leave Willow Alone, a fine boo, the Duchess of Buffonia is exhausting, little minions with the assist, HELLO, RIPPER, literal wig snatch, and finger popping.
For this week’s conversation David Bushman and Arthur Smith, TV curators at the Paley Center for Media in New York and authors of Buffy the Vampire Slayer FAQ: All That's Left to Know About Sunnydale's Slayer of Vampires, Demons, and Other Forces of Darkness join me to discuss rumors of “Golden Circle” behavior in the Mutant Enemy writers room and how that compares to the growing insularity of the Scooby Gang over the course of the series. We touch very briefly on Xander’s role as the Joss proxy; early hints of #Gamergate mentality; and how story, theme, and emotion tend to trump consistency in the Whedonverse. Episode 206, “Halloween” introduces Ethan Rayne, the only character ever to deliver a convincing read of a Latin incantation. In 207, Buffy asks Giles to “Lie to Me,” or...to her, or whatever. You know what I meant. And Ethan is back to mess things up for Giles and Jenny in 208, “The Dark Age.” Next: Melanie Scala, long time fan of genre fiction in general and Buffy the Vampire Slayer in particular, and apparently young Watcher-in-training joins me to discuss “What’s My Line? Hallo Junggebliebene und Schokoladenliebhaber, heute sind es vermeintlich harmlose Süßigkeiten, die die ganze Stadt in Chaos stürzen. Ethan Rayne ist wieder da. Viel Spaß, F. Now that Buffy and Riley have discovered eachother's secret identities, Buffy's convinced this relationship is doomed. Their vastly different methods will be put to the test as some demons decide to perform a ritual to reopen the Hellmouth. As the Initiative uses science to track the demons' pheromones, the Scoobies use research to try to anticipate the next move in their evil Scavenger Hunt. Kristen and Mike discuss the Initiative's derision of magic, and debate the shelf life of "Mayor Meat". In "A New Man", Giles is feeling all of his middle-aged years. With Buffy dating someone new and impressed with a different scholastic elder, his "gentleman of leisure" lifestyle suddenly seems a little pathetic. This is the perfect time for Ethan Rayne to come to town to exact a little revenge and turn Giles into a Fyarl demon. While Buffy and Riley (assuming that Giles has been attacked) track the demon all over town, Giles enlists Spike to help him find Ethan. Kristen and Mike review the unlikely duo of Giles/Spike, and rank the Ethan Rayne episodes. PLUS! We answer Chris' question - You have the power to save one character who died and kill off another who survived... who do you choose?
Today, on a very special episode of E2E, we're talking spin-offs! Sure, we talk about the ones that almost happened, but we go beyond those today. We're talkin' Clem. We're talkin' Willy. We're talkin' Ethan Rayne. We're talkin' about gaggles more of some of our favorite Buffy pals and the spin-off shows we would like to see!
Ethan Rayne returns to Sunnydale, and the Gilesmobile pays the price. It's the morning after the night before in A New Man (B4.12)!
In "Lie to Me", Buffy's childhood friend Billy Fordham arrives in Sunnydale - but not to attend classes. He's got a secret plan that involves the Slayer, Spike, and a refurbished bomb shelter full of vampire-wannabees. Kristen & Mike welcome guest host Taryn to the stacks and the three of them discuss Billy's illness and compare his moral compass to Buffy's. In "The Dark Age", Buffy fans are finally introduced Giles' edgy alter ego... Ripper! When one of Rupert's adolescent cohorts is found dead at the high school, the stuffy librarian loses his cool. The demonically possessed intruder will put a strain on his relationship with Jenny and bring back a beloved villain - Ethan Rayne. Kristen, Mike, and Taryn compare Ethan and Giles to another Beloved British Badass and dissect Willow & Ethan's plans to thwart Eyegon.
Reptile Boy finds Buffy getting preparing for the Delta Zeta Kappa party. Cordy needs her to get in and Tom's looking forward to her company - but Buffy's about to learn some hard lessons about dating on the Hellmouth. Kristen & Mike discuss this episode's mixed messages as well as their own history with fraternities. Next up, it's Halloween. The vamps might be planning to take the holiday off, but Ethan Rayne is not. As a tribute to Chaos, Ethan casts a spell switching everyone's personalities with those of their costumes. How will debutante Buffy battle Spike and his band of trick-or-treaters? Kristen & Mike debate Willow's costume and its effect on Oz, and then share their own costumed repertories.
Giles' dark past finally catches up with him in The Dark Age (2.08). Join us as we celebrate Ethan Rayne, a new zenith of camp, and the dangers of drinking alone.
The Dark Age is the eighth episode from the second season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It seems that Giles was something of a miscreant during his formative years in England. One night of dabbling in the dark arts results in the death of a friend, the unleashing of a globe-trotting demon and a freaky tattoo. Now, Giles must own up to his sins of long ago, as his murderous past has caught up with him. Throw in the slithering Ethan Rayne, the sexy Jenny Calendar and one nasty-looking demon, and The Dark Age is the place to be. Join me as I talk about unexplainable green lighting, a possible connection to Firefly by way of set decoration and one of the more baffling continuity mistakes in the history of this series. As per usual, please listen for my preemptive countdown before starting the episode on your DVD.
It's all about chaos and costumes in Halloween, the sixth episodes from the second season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Willow becomes a hot ghost, Xander becomes a soldier, Buffy becomes a noblewoman and Cordelia is still Cordelia, but with cute, plastic cat ears. Ethan Rayne makes his first appearance and we see that Giles has a bit of a dark side. In this commentary, I talk about volunteer work, trick or treat and the inconsistency of the vampire invitation rule. As usual, be sure to listen for my preemptive countdown before beginning Halloween on your DVD. For the record, the last time I dressed up for Halloween, I was Leonard Shelby from the film, Memento. So, had I been in Sunnydale at the time, I would have been struck with short-term memory loss and a taste for murderous revenge. As Buffy would say, "It's good to be me." :)
