Just a few days ago, over 300 million voters across 27 countries were called to vote in the European Parliament elections. These elections take place every five years, and sometimes people have a tendency to dismiss them as symbolic elections that don't matter much in practice. But the lead-up to the vote this year has been particularly intense: as the war in Ukraine rages on, countries all across the continent face rising nationalist and nativist sentiment, and far-right parties expect to make gains in the Parliament, the stakes of the 2024 EU elections loom high. This week on the show, Director of Carnegie Europe Rosa Balfour joins Sophia to unpack the European Parliament elections – how exactly do they work, what do the outcomes mean for the future of European policy, and why should the US care?Charting the Radical Right's Influence on EU Foreign Policy, ed. But apparently it's impossible for financial reasons. Well, let us de-bullshit Net-Zero. (Article By Anupama Sen & Sam Fankhauser)In Society: (20:32) I've had moments in my life where energy drinks were a lifesaver, cans of human jet fuel with varying taste profiles. But like most fun things, kids shouldn't have them. So how bad are energy drinks? (Article By David Cox)In Music: (38:54) Kendrick Lamar's "Not Like Us" is borderline a cultural phenomenon at this point and nothing confirms that notion than the way it's already getting played in American Sport events. (Article By Keith Murphy)Lastly, In Life: (52:21) I've long believed that life is just a chain of memories with monotony in the middle. Some of us keep memories, some of us forget them. So how much is a memory worth? (Article By Mike Troxell)Thank you for listening! One of the biggest exercises in democracy this year is filling 720 seats from 27 countries in the European Parliamentary elections. As results continue to flood in, a split-screen image is emerging. Establishment parties did well in many countries and EU Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen's centrist European People's party will remain the largest group. But in France, Marine Le Pen and her far-right allies won twice as many seats as centrist President Emmanuel Macron's party. Italy's former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, whose centre-left party failed to win any seats, joins the show from Rome, and journalist and author Christine Ockrent joins the show from Paris.   Also on today's show: Former Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni; author Ernesto Londoño  Learn more about your ad choices.
